I have received inquiries about the trip to Kansai area many times. So I make a basic itinerary that includes Kansai area, such as Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara only. This is 7 days itinerary. But you can shorten or extend as you can.

Now I would like to tell you the best route and most economical deals about this trip.

Day 1 – Kansai airport (KIX) to Kyoto

Central exit of Kyoto station. (C) JP Rail
Central exit of Kyoto station. (C) JP Rail

Kansai One Pass and Haruka one way trip to Kyoto at 4,600 yen.
Overnight around JR Kyoto station

If you arrive in Kyoto early, you can visit somewhere around Kyoto station. Fushimi Inari is only 5 minutes away from Kyoto station. Kyoto Tower is just located in front of Kyoto station. You can use Kansai One Pass to get there.

Day 2 and 3 – Sightseeing in Kyoto

There are several deals available. I recommend you to use both Kansai One Pass and Kyoto City Bus Pass. Kansai One Pass covers city bus too but Kansai One Pass does not give you unlimited travel. It offers only convenience. On the other hand, Kyoto City Bus Pass is sold at 600 yen for one day. You can take a bus as many as you want. You can get the worth of it by only 3 rides. You can use Kansai One Pass only for taking a train and/or a subway.

Kyoto City Bus and Subway Pass (Kyoto Sightseeing Card) is also available. But this does not cover other railways, such as JR, Hankyu, Keihan railways. You will take various trains in Kyoto. Please see the link below to find the train route in Kyoto:

Kyoto train guide

You can get anywhere in downtown Kyoto by bus. It is possible to visit all places only by city bus. However city bus is always crowded and the traffic in Kyoto has been very heavy in these days. I recommend you to take a train or a subway as much as you can.

Kansai One Pass and Bus Pass are the best combination for sightseeing in Kyoto, in my opinion.

Day 4 – Trip to Nara and transfer to Osaka

Visit Nara on the way to Namba, Osaka from Kyoto.

You can take either Kintetsu Railway or JR to get Nara. Both trains depart from Kyoto station. But Kintetsu railway’s Nara station is better location. It is 1 km closer to most of tourist spots in Nara than JR Nara station.

After Nara, you can take either JR or Kintetsu to get Osaka. Please see the link below to find the route to Nara:

Nara access guide

Day 5 – Trip to Kobe and Himeji from Osaka

There are lots of castles in Japan. But Himeji castle is one of four existing original catle buildings. (C) JNTO

You may use JR Kansai Area Pass one day at 2,200 yen if you book it online in advance. If you buy it online, you have to exchange the pass at Shin-Osaka, Osaka, Kyoto or Kansai airport.

JR West Pass official site

You can purchase this pass at many major stations in downtown Osaka but the price is a bit higher. There is other trains to Kobe and Himeji, like Hanshin railway. But JR is the fastest to get Himeji. Please see the post, How to access to Himeji and Kobe from Osaka to get the details.

Day 6 – Sightseeing in Osaka

ICOCA and Haruka, Kansai One Pass and Haruka

I hope this sample helps you to build your trip plan.

Day 2. Check out. Kyoto city tour (bus pass 500¥?). go to osaka at night (by shinkansen).

Day 3. Trip to nara and kobe (ktp?)

Day 4. Trip to himeji (ktp?)

    Day 5. Osaka tour (OAP)

    Hi Takeshi,

    A few clarifications,
Day 5 – Base is Shinsaibashi Hotel — Shin-Kobe Ropeway (Nunobiki)– Restaurant near Sannomiya Station — Dotonbori–Namba Park– back to hotel

Day 6 – Shinsaibashi Hotel — shopping at Shinsaibashisuji, Kuromon, Dogusujiya

    Day 7 – Shinsaibashi Hotel — KIX

Q1: Instead of getting a Hanshin 1day tourist pass for Day 5, can I instead get the Kansai Thru Pass 2 days and use it for Day 5 and Day 6. With Kansai Thru Pass I will be getting a discount in the entrance of Nunobiki. Is my decision economical and wise?

Q2: For Day 7, you suggested that I get the one way Haruka Limited Express. Is there a pass (express train) that will start from Shinsaibashi?

    Again, thanks for the assistance.

    Louie

  3. Apple says:

    Hi Takeshi,

    1) In this 7d sampleitineraries, which transportation pass I need to purchase in advance via online? Prefer Osaka amazing pass, the rest same as per your sample.
If not purchase online, all passes can be bought at Kansai airport on the first day we reach??

Thank you in advance for your kind advice.

    2) if buy icoca-and-haruka ROUND TRIP ticket, why still have to incur the cost below from Kyoto to Osaka?
Or follow the itinerary below, I should buy one way ticket from KIX to Kyoto instead??? Plus cost below

Visit Nara on the way to Namba, Osaka from Kyoto.
    Kyoto to Nara 710 yen
    Nara to JR-Namba 560 yen
    Total 1230 yen

    3) on my first day, we will reach KIX around 9am, and then heading to Kyoto directly. Please advise the estimated time to reach Kyoto and roughly how many tourist spot we can visit on the day? Appreciate if could advise some places which suit the timing

    4) Kyoto sightseeing cards cover both bus and subways in Kyoto?

  4. Louie says:

    Hi Takeshi,

Here’s my itinerary. Kindly comment on the feasibility and correct combinations.

    Day 1 – KIX — Kyoto Hotel
Upon arriving at KIX, I will buy a) ICOCA and Haruka Kyoto one way which cost 3600Yen and b) Haruka Tennoji one way for Day 7 which cost 1,100 Yen.
Upon arriving at Kyoto Station, I will buy Kyoto Sightseeing 2 day pass which cost 2,000Yen.

Q1: Can I buy Haruka Tennoji one way on the same date that I bought the ICOCA and Haruka Kyoto? Is there no expiration?
Q2: Can I buy the Kyoto Sightseeing Pass a day before I use it?
Q3: Are the prices of the passes that I listed correct? I am working on a budget so I want everything accounted for.

Day 2 – Kyoto Hotel — Fushimi Inari — Kiyomizudera Temple — Gion and Pontocho

Day 3 – Kyoto Hotel — Nishiki Market — Nijo Castle — Kinkakuji Temple — Arashiyama

For Fushimi Inari – I will use ICOCA and have a remaining balance of 1,220 for it. For the other tourist spots for Day 2 and 3, I will use my Kyoto Sightseeing 2 day pass.

Q4: Does the Kyoto Sightseeing Pass give discounts on entrance fees? If yes, where can I check if the tourists spots I picked are included and how much discount I will get.

Q5: Did I make the right combinations? Any suggestions?
    5a) Fushimi/ Kiyomizudera / Gion / Pontocho?
    5b) N ishiki / Nijo / Arashiyama?

Day 4 Depart Kyoto hotel. Leave bags in Nara. Go to Nara Deer Park. Then pick up bags. Check in at Shinsaibashi Hotel. Osaka Castle — Umeda Sky Bldg. — Dotombori

Q6: Where do you suggest I leave my bags? In JR Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Station? Which between the 2 stations have big coin lockers?

Q7: I prefer to go down to Kintetsu Nara since it is just 5 minute walk to the park. Can I use ICOCA if I go down to this station? If yes, how much do I need to add if I have a remaining balance of 1,220 Yen?

Q8: Can I use ICOCA from Kintetsu Nara to Shinsaibashi Station? Again, how much do I need to add?

Q9: I will buy Enjoy Eco Card pass. Will I get discounts in the entrance fees to Osaka Castle and Umeda Sky Bldg? By how much?

Day 5 – Shinsaibashi Hotel — Shin-Kobe Ropeway — Sannomiya (Kobe Beef Restaurant) — back to Shinsaibashi Hotel

Q10: Is there a 1 day pass that will cover my transportation from Osaka to Kobe? What do you call this pass? How much is it?

Day 6 – Shinsaibashi Hotel to KIX

Q11: I will use my Haruka Tennoji one way which I bought in Day 1, am I right?

Q12: I still have to get a single fare Shinsaibashi to Tennoji, correct?

Q13: Get my ICOCA deposit in KIX, correct?

Sorry to ask so many questions. Will really appreciate and wait for your reply. And will welcome suggestions. Thanks in advance.

    Louie

    • Hi Louie,

Q1: Can I buy Haruka Tennoji one way on the same date that I bought the ICOCA and Haruka Kyoto? Is there no expiration?
No, you can’t, Tennoji-KIX Haruka discount ticket is sold at Tennoji. You cannot purchase it at KIX.

Q2: Can I buy the Kyoto Sightseeing Pass a day before I use it?
Yes. Once you start using, it start automatically.

Q3: Are the prices of the passes that I listed correct? I am working on a budget so I want everything accounted for.
      Yes.

Q4: Does the Kyoto Sightseeing Pass give discounts on entrance fees? If yes, where can I check if the tourists spots I picked are included and how much discount I will get.
      Yes.

Ask details when you purchase it if you are not sure about this PDF.

Q5: Did I make the right combinations? Any suggestions?
Nishiki market is closed to Gion. It’s located near Kawaramachi station. It supposed to be combined with 5a.

Q6: Where do you suggest I leave my bags? In JR Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Station? Which between the 2 stations have big coin lockers?
I think Kintetsu is better. Kintetsu Nara is closer to temples in Nara than JR. Actually I have never counted the number of lockers.

You can use ICOCA. Please use Hyperdia to find the fare.

Q9: I will buy Enjoy Eco Card pass. Will I get discounts in the entrance fees to Osaka Castle and Umeda Sky Bldg? By how much?
Yes. 10% discount for Sky Bldg, 100 yen discount for Osaka castle.

Q10: Is there a 1 day pass that will cover my transportation from Osaka to Kobe? What do you call this pass? How much is it?
There is no deals to cover all part of this trip. Only Hashin tourist pass covers Namba – Sannomiya
      http://www.kansai360.net/en/ticket02/

Q12: I still have to get a single fare Shinsaibashi to Tennoji, correct?
You need to purchase it at Tennoji.

Q13: Get my ICOCA deposit in KIX, correct?
You can do it at Tennoji too. When you leave Tennoji, you don’t need to use ICOCA any more.

      Cheers,

Please feel free to make suggestions / comments. And please help us with which kind of pass suits our plan.

Can we use the OSAKA AMAZING PASS in any one of those days?

Sorry for my very long comment. Thank you so much for your time.

    Best regards,
    Ann

    • Hi Ann,

I think you will find the solution for your trip at the link below:
      https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/7days/how-to-build-the-itinerary-and-choose-the-deals-for-osaka-stay-5-to-7-days.html

If you visit 3 or more attractions on the list, amazing pass will work. But as far as I take a look, it’s not enough to use Amazing pass. Eco card (subway pass) is better choice. But Ramen museum is not in subway coverage. You need to add the fare to take Hankyu railway.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • Ann Mary Go says:

Thanks a lot, Takeshi for the quick reply.

        1) Can you pls. comment on our Kyoto-Nara tour on day Day5? Is it ok? Nara with Central Kyoto?

        2) What pass can we use for the “Kyoto” Days? The “Kansai Area Pass”, the “Kyoto Sightseeing Day Pass” etc. etc.

Thanks Takeshi! With you around, I believe our Kansai trip will be STRESS FREE!

        Cheers,
        Ann

        • Hi Ann,

I think you should visit Nara on day 7. Fushimi Inari is much easier to combine with Nara.
Kansai thru pass is the best choice to get Kyoto and/or Nara.

          • Ann Mary Go says:

            Thanks a lot, Takeshi!

I enjoy making itineraries but I am not good in navigation or directions. Like until now, I am still having a hard time differentiating the many “PASSes”. Pls. kindly bear with me.

            1) So its Fushimi-inari Shrine + Nara on Day 7 using KANSAI THRU PASS, right?

            2) From Osaka Awaza station, is it better to visit Fushimi-inari first? Or Nara?

            3) Can you suggest what Day can be combined with Day 5 (Nijo Castle) so as to save time?

            4) Can we use the JR 7 day pass in this type of itinerary?

            5) Can we squeeze in TOKYO DISNEY SEA to our itinerary? or maybe we can remove Himeji?

Thank you so much, Takeshi, for helping out. Thanks for your time & patience in answering my quieries.

            Cheers!
            Ann

            • Hi Ann,

              1. Yes.
              2. Doesn’t matter. You can go first either place.
              3. I recommend you to keep one full day for Kyoto only. There are many places to see.
              4. JR Pass is too expensive.
              5. It’s very far. You have to take subway to Umeda, JR local train to Shin-Osaka, Shinkansen to Tokyo and local train to Maihama. It takes at least 3.5 hours for one way. If you really want to visit there, you have to give up Himeji or other one full day. And also you need to have JR pass 7 days. Just round trip cost is almost same as JR pass 7 days.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com

              • Ann Mary Go says:

                Howdy, Takeshi!

                Thanks for the suggestions

I read in one of your posts that Arahiyama District can be combined with Northern Kyoto?

                1) that include Nijo Castle & Golden Pavilion, right?

                1) If we travel at a medium to slow pace, is it possible to visit Arashiyama-Northern Kyoto in one day, and
Fushimi-inari – Nara in another day?
Or there wont be enough time & a separate day is needed?

                2) On which day can we add Pontocho District?

                3) Which day for Gion corner?

                4) Kansai Thru Pass for both days, right?

                Thank you!

                Cheers!
                Ann

                • Hi Ann,

                  1) Right.

                  1) Yes

2, 3) Either day. Gion and Pontocho are located near by. You can access these places from either Fushimi or Northern Kyoto.

                  4) Yes

                    1) ICOCA & HARUKA
                    2) Kanku Tokuwari Rapi:t Ticket
                    3) others
                    Pls tell me why?

                    Thank you!

                    • Hi Ann,

If you want most affordable deal, Kansai Chikatoku ticket (Osaka City Subway to Kansai int’l Airport) is the best. If you want to take limited express Rapi:t, Kanku Tokuwari Rapi:t Ticket + single fare to Awaza is cheaper than Kansai Chikatoku ticket + limited express surcharge.

ICOCA and Haruka is okay. But you have to change the trains twice, at Tennoji and Bentencho, if you use this deal. If you want to have ICOCA card, you can go for

I noticed that in this post, you suggested using the KYOTO SIGHTSEEING CARD for the 2 day Kyoto tour.

Both cards can be used for Kyoto city bus & subways. Pls tell me the differences between the two!

                    Thanks much:

                    • Hi Ann,

In this post, the location to stay is Kyoto. But you stay in Osaka, don’t you?
Kansai thru pass covers the trip between Osaka and Kyoto. Kyoto sightseeing card covers only subway and bus. If you use this deal, you need to add Kyoto-Osaka round trip fare. I checked your trip plan and recommended Kansai thru pass.
Please don’t mix up sightseeing from Kyoto and from Osaka.

                      Cheers,

                      Hi Takeshi.

It‘s me again. Been doing lots of researching lately for my Kansai trip

The Ramen museum needs a single fare ticket for the Hankyu Line.

                      1) Which place is better to combine with Ramen Museum: Kita Umeda area or Osaka Castle area?

                      2) Do you think the ENJOY ECO CARD is still the more economical card to use that specific day even if we cant use it in the Ramen Museum portion of our trip?

Thanks a lot, Takeshi! You have been very helpful to us.

                      Cheers!

                      Ann

                    • Hi Ann,

                      1. Umeda
Because you will take Hankyu at Umeda.

                      2. It depends on your plan after/before ramen museum. You have to make sure how many trips by subway you will make. Roughly if you take subway 4 trips of more, it’s usually paid off.

Check the fare at hyperdia and you can compare too.

                      Thanks again, Takeshi.

I came across another route from Kansai Airport to Awaza. Depending on the time we will be out of the airport, we might take this route,

Kansai Airport – Tengachaya – Sakaisujihommachi – Awaza

                      1) What type of pass can be used for this route?

                      2) With regards to Osaka Aquarium Kaniyukan, will you suggest purchasing the OSAKA KAIYU TICKET for the day we tour the Bay Area?

I came across the counterpart of the Enjoy Eco Card, the OSAKA VISITORS‘ TICKET. This is Not sold in Japan but only in 3 other countries, one of which is Taiwan, my home country.

                      3) Do you suggest we purchase this OVT here in Taiwan at 550yen as compared to the 800yen Eco Card purchased in Japan?

                      Thank you again, Takeshi.

I feel that I am beginning to enjoy the planning process for our Japan trip, Honestly, I really learned a lot from you

                      Cheers,
                      Ann

                    • Hi Ann,

                      1. There is no deal to cover this. I think I have recommended to use Kansai Chikatoku ticket.
                      http://www.howto-osaka.com/en/ticket/ticket/chikatoku.html

But if you use this, you have to change the train at Namba. I don’t understand why you want to take this route, Kansai Airport – Tengachaya – Sakaisujihommachi – Awaza. If you change the train at Namba, you need to change it only once.

                      2. Yes.

                      3. Yes.

                      Cheers,

                      Hello Takeshi!

In my opinion, no trip to Japan is complete without riding its world famous bullet train, a.k.a. Shinkansen

I think we can have this Shinkansen experience during our trip to Himeji.
All my questions pertain to Himeji.

                      1) What type of pass will we use if:
                      a) we plan to ride shinkansen to Himeji?
                      b) we plan to take JR trains to Himeji?
                      c) can we take the train going to Himeji then take Shinkansen going back to Osaka?

                      2) what pass to use during the first leg of the trip which is the Subway part?

                      3) what pass to use for the JR local train part?

                      4) Based on my itinerary, what other days can we take the Shinkansen, aside from Himeji.

                      Thanks a lot.

                      Cheers,

                      Ann

                      My new questions are:
                      1) Regarding HIMEJI & KOBE
***You suggested to use the JR Kansai Area Pass.
                      a) Does this pass cover the subway part of the trip, like the Chuo line or Osaka loop line?
If not, what pass to use for the subways?
                      b) Is it acceptable to take shinkansen on our way back to Osaka, what pass to use?

                      2) Considering the length of our stay (10days) is it feasible to have a day trip to Nagoya maybe on Day 5?
                      a) Will it be very stressful?
                      b) What pass to use?

                      3) For Day 3, you mentioned that the Ramen Museum will use single fare. How about going to Umeda, What pass to use?

                      4) a) Can the ICOCA IC card be used for both JR & non JR lines?
                      b) If I will use single fare, then, can I use the ICOCA?

Sorry for the length of my post. I hope you don‘t mind. Really need some advices from a PRO.

                      Thank you, Takeshi. Best regards!

                      Cheers,

                    • Hi Ann,

                      My answers are the following:

                      1) Regarding HIMEJI & KOBE
***You suggested to use the JR Kansai Area Pass.

                      b) Is it acceptable to take shinkansen on our way back to Osaka, what pass to use?

                      A:
Kansai area pass covers only JR line. If you want the coverage of subway, Kansai thru pass is better. But trip time to Himeji is much longer than using JR train. You may find the link below:
                      https://jprail.com/destinations/kansai-area/how-to-access-to-himeji-and-kobe-from-osaka.html

If you want to use JR Kansai area pass, you need to pay single fare for riding subway.
Shinkansen is not covered by this pass at all. Only Kansai Wide Area Pass covers the trip to Himeji by Shinkansen. However it is too expensive to use this pass for just taking Shinkansen to Himeji. Even you have round trip to Himeji by Shinkansen, round trip fare is around 6500 yen. I think single fare is better option.

                      2) Considering the length of our stay (10days) is it feasible to have a day trip to Nagoya maybe on Day 5?
                      a) Will it be very stressful?
                      b) What pass to use?

You can do it. Kintetsu rail pass is the best deal.
                      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/kintetsu-rail-pass-most-affordable-deal-for-osakakyoto-nagoya-and-access-to-ise.html

This pass can be used for access to Nara and Kyoto too. But it gives you just access to Nara and Kyoto from Osaka. It does not cover local transportation, such as city bus and subway. Kansai thru pass is much more convenient.

                      3) For Day 3, you mentioned that the Ramen Museum will use single fare. How about going to Umeda, What pass to use?

Single ticket is best option because you will have short ride by subway between Awaza and Umeda only.

                      4) a) Can the ICOCA IC card be used for both JR & non JR lines?
                      b) If I will use single fare, then, can I use the ICOCA?

                      Yes. ICOCA covers all trains.

                      Cheers,

                      Hi Takeshi,

Thanks for your very detailed reply.

I would like to ask your suggestions/advice for my Himeji-Kobe day trip from Awaza Station in Osaka.

I plan to take the Shinkansen (for that uniquely Japanese experience) directly to Himeji Station. (one way Shinkansen only)

Tour Himeji castle then Kokoen Garden .

Leave Himeji for Kobe (Sannomiya Station) using JR trains & limited express trains,

                      Then Kobe back to Awaza.

                      My questions are:
                      1) You suggested to use the JR Kansai Area Pass before. But this pass does not include the Shinkansen.
If we will be using Shinkansen to Himeji, & take the JR trains or limited express trains to Kobe & back to Awaza Station, what combination of passes will we use?

                      2) There are 2 choices for Sannomiya (Sannomiya JR and Sannomiya subway). Which one is the station for Kobe ?

                      3) Is Shinkansen Sakura faster then Hikari? 🙂

                      4) Can you please suggest an itinerary for Kobe from Himeji?

*If in case this information might help, I would like to make mention that we allotted 2 days for Kyoto & Kyoto/Nara.
You suggested we use Kansai Thru Pass (2 days).
(I read in one of your posts the Kansai Thru Pass also covers Kobe).

That’s all for now, Takeshi. Thank you so much for your help.

                      Cheers,

                      Ann

                    • Hi Ann,

                      1. Add Shinkansen single trip ticket and add one more day of Kansai thru pass (use 3 days Kansai thru pass). Kansai thru pass is not the best choice for Kobe-Himeji because it’s much slower than JR trains. But it covers subway from Awaza to Shin-Osaka, from Umeda to Awaza. Of course it covers Kobe-Sannomiya to Umeda too In the cost, this is better option.

2 and 4. Same place. Please see the links below to find more info about trip to Kobe and Himeji.

                      3. Yes. But some Hikari is same as Sakura.

Thank you so much, Takeshi! I really learned a lot from you.

You suggested Kansai Thru pass for the other commute except Shinkansen. But this pass doesnt cover JR trains which are much faster.

Can you suggest the pass to use if we opt for JR trains?

Do you have an idea of the time difference between JR & non JR trains?

                      Many many THANKS!

                    • Hi Ann,

Only single fare is your choice for JR trains.

                      Hi Takeshi,

                      Thanks again!

Pls. kindly give me the link for the info about JR and Non JR again. Sorry, but I can not find it in your most recent reply.

According to Hyperdia, Himeji to Sannomiya using JR will take approx. 47min at 970yen.

Himeji to Sannomiya using non JR will consume approx. 74min at 1170yen but is covered by Kansai Thru Pass.

If we prioritize time during this particular day, then maybe using JR from Himeji to Sannomiya is a much better choice. What is the fastest way to travel for this day – Himeji to Kobe and finally Kobe to Awaza

Pls. Correct me if I am wrong.
                      1) Does it mean we will use single fares all throughout until the last leg of our trip which is Sannomiya to Awaza. (560yen).

                      2) Can we just use the ICOCA IC Card this time?

                      Thank you so much!

And also, you may find the detailed info about Kansai thru pass at the link below. It shows you the coverage map.
                      http://www.surutto.com/images/ticket/kansai_thru_pass/english/en_map.pdf

The fastest way is JR for Himeji to Kobe. And Hanshin railway (Kobe-Sannomiya to Kujo) and Osaka subway (Kujo to Awaza). In this case, you need to pay single fare. Because you will take JR before Kobe and Non JR after Kobe. You can use ICOCA to take all these trains.

                      Cheers,

“The fastest way is JR for Himeji to Kobe. And Hanshin railway (Kobe-Sannomiya to Kujo) and Osaka subway (Kujo to Awaza). In this case, you need to pay single fare. Because you will take JR before Kobe and Non JR after Kobe. You can use ICOCA to take all these trains.”

                      These are my questions:
                      1) Where is this Kobe Sannomiya Hanshin station?
                      2) I checked Hyperdia & found out that you suggested 2 separate routes.
So, does that mean that when I reach Kujo, I need to go out the train & change to Osaka subway for Awaza?
Can you kindly pls teach me how to go about it.

                      Thanks so much

                      Cheers,

                      Ann

                    • Hi Ann,

                      1) I have given this link below already. It shows all “Sannomiya station” in the map.
                      https://jprail.com/destinations/kansai-area/osaka-kyoto-kobe-and-nara/guide-to-take-trains-in-kobe-how-to-choose-the-best-route-by-train-to-get-the-major-spots.html

                      2) Yes. You need to exit. Hanshin’s Kujo station is located underground and subway station is not underground but it’s on the ground. Just follow the sign. It’s not hard to find.

                      Cheers,

                      Takeshi / JPRail.com

                      Good morning, Takeshi!

Thanks for the latest links you gave me last Sunday.

Sorry but I am a bit “slow” in getting directions So I really have to ask in detail. Hope you understand. ☺

As a recap of our HIMEJI-KOBE DAY TRIP, here goes. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

                      7:29 am
AWAZA – HIMEJI (experience to take Shinkansen )
I found this route in Hyperdia.
Shortest travel time and only 2 transfers.
Not sure if I am correct. ? ?
                      AWAZA-
(Osaka City Subway Chuo Line for Gakkennaratomigaoka) ==>
                      HOMMACHI –
(Osaka subway Midosuji Line for Senrichio) ==>
                      SHIN-OSAKA [departure track 21]
                      (Shinkansen Hikari 493) ==>
                      * HIMEJI *

                      time duration: 64min
                      total fare : 3980 base fare: 1730 + reserved seat fee: 2250
                      [subway fares: 240 + Shinkansen: 1730]

                      Questions pls…
                      1) Pls comment on my choice of route.
                      2) How far are the 2 Subway lines from each other?
                      3) When we exit the Shinkansen terminal in Himeji, how will we reach the Castle & Kokoen Garden?
                      4) Is there a need to purchase “reserved seat” for the Shinkansen?
                      5) A] NO pass can cover for this route. ALL SINGLE FARES, right?
                      B] ICOCA for subways.
C] * Is the Shinkansen ticket bought as a separate ticket?
                      * Can we buy the Shinkansen ticket before the day we will use it?
                      * Can we change dates if the ticket is already purchased?

I will post my Kobe questions later. I wil try to finish the Himeji part first.

Sorry for the length of my post. I hope you understand.

Really appreciate your BIG help, Takeshi. Thank you for helping us unconditionally

                      Cheers,

                      Ann

                    • Hi Ann,

                      1. That’s good.
                      2. Not much, takes about 3-5 minutes. Just follow the signage. You don’t need to exit.
                      3. Please see the link below:
                      https://jprail.com/destinations/kansai-area/himeji-station-guide-how-to-get-himeji-castle-from-the-station.html
                      4. You may take non reserved seat if you want. But sometimes it’s hard to get a seat on non reserved car.
If you take reserved seat, Sakura is better than Hikari because Sakura’s reserved seat is 2+2 seat layout but Hikari has 2+3. Sakura has more spacious seat. Check it at hyperdia and you will find Sakura at 8:00 and 9:00.
5.There is no deals. Single fare is your chocie but you can use ICOCA to take all trains other than Shinkansen. You can purchase Shinkansen ticket at any major JR stations in advance.
You may change the date just once before departure time. You cannot change it twice and cannot change it after departure time either. But you still can take non reserved seat by reserved seat even after departure time.

                      Cheers,

                      Takeshi / JPRail.com

Hi Takeshi. Thanks for the Himeji link!

Its been a habit for me this past week to check for new comments in your page. Really learned a lot!

Here is my KOBE itinerary. . .

After Himeji, we will go back to Osaka via KOBE.

We decided to take JR train to Kobe coz it is faster.

                      HIMEJI –> KOBE (SANNOMIYA JR)
** Take JR Special Rapid Service for Omishiotsu or Yasu or Nagahama or Tsuruga (depending on the time we arrive at the terminal)

                      travel time: 39min
                      price: 970 yen

Upon arrival at the JR Station in Kobe, we plan to visit these attractions.
[I got the idea from this link you provided: “Guide to take trains in Kobe. How to choose the best route by train to get the major spots?”]
                      1) Sannomiya
                      2) Meriken Park
                      3) Harborland

                      My questions are:
                      1) From the JR station, what place will we visit first? Pls suggest a better feasible route to follow for the sightseeing.
                      2) How will we go from 1 attraction to the other?
                      3) I read about the “City Loop One Day Pass”. Is this a better deal than “Single Fare” when visiting only the attractions I mentioned?

After the Kobe tour, it’s time to go back to Osaka!

                      You suggested:
                      A) Hanshin railway (Kobe-Sannomiya to Kujo) ==>>
                      B) Osaka subway (Kujo to Awaza).

KOBE-SANNOMIYA (HANSHIN) => AMAGASAKI (HANSHIN) => KUJO (OSAKA)
Exit for Osaka City Subway Chuo Line ??
                      KUJO (OSAKA) ==> AWAZA

                      My questions are:
                      1) Can you pls suggest another route if we do not want to exit anymore & just transfer rails?
                      2) What station do we take this train?

                      Thank you so much Takeshi!

                      Cheers,

                      Ann

                    • Hi Ann,

I have already given you the link about trip to Kobe day before yesterday. I put the link again. Please read it carefully. You will find the solution about trip in Kobe.
                      https://jprail.com/destinations/kansai-area/osaka-kyoto-kobe-and-nara/guide-to-take-trains-in-kobe-how-to-choose-the-best-route-by-train-to-get-the-major-spots.html

There is no other route without exit the station from Kobe to Awazawa. You have to exit the station at least once because Awaza is Osaka subway station. There is no way to get Awaza from outside Osaka. This is actually the easiest route.

                      Cheers,

                      Takeshi / JPRail.com

I would like to share with you my revised “KYOTO” days.

I would like to make mention that we will be staying near Awaza for the entire 10 days of our trip.

Here is my revised KYOTO 2day itinerary. . .

                      DAY 1

                      Teramachi Mall (shopping)
                      Higashiyama district
                      Gion

                      DAY 2
                      am Kiyomizudera
                      Ginkakuji
                      Tofukuji
                      Fushimi Inari Shrine
                      pm NARA
                      Todaiji Temple
                      Nara Park
                      Kasuga Shrine
                      Kofukuji

Q1: Is this type of itinerary feasible?

Q2: Is the Kansai Thru Pass – 2 day pass – covered in this type of itinerary?

Q3: Can you please help me reaarrange the attractions for a smoother feasible route?
Which place must come first etc.?

Q4: We plan to shop around Kyoto Station. What day can we do this if time permits?

                      Thanks a lot, Takeshi!

                      Best regards,

                      Ann

                    • Hi Ann,

Q1: Is this type of itinerary feasible?
It will be tight but you will make it. I think you will spend entire morning for just Arashiyama. You will be Nishiki Market in mid afternoon. But if you have a time on day 1, try to visit Ginkakuji temple.

Q2: Is the Kansai Thru Pass – 2 day pass – covered in this type of itinerary?
                      Yes.

Q3: Can you please help me reaarrange the attractions for a smoother feasible route?
Which place must come first etc.?
The route is okay. But I recommend you to switch Nara and Kyoto on day 2. Go to Nara first. And then visit Fushimi, Tofukuji and Kiyomizudera. As I mentioned, if you visit Ginkakuji on day 1, day 2 is easier.

Q4: We plan to shop around Kyoto Station. What day can we do this if time permits?
Day 2 is better but I recommend you to visit Ginkakuji on day 1 and visit Nara in the morning.
You can go to shopping district in the evening. Try to visit temples and shrines in day time as many as you can

                      Cheers,

                      Takeshi / JPRail.com

Thank you, Takeshi, for the suggestions & advices.

My family prefer to travel at a medium to light pace. We are not very much into hiking & temples either. But kyoto is famous for the many beautiful temples & shrine. So we need to visit the famous attractions in this city.

Q1: a) Do you think we need to allot a third day for Kyoto? (Maybe Eastern kyoto one day; Arashiyama, Central & Northern Kyoto one day, Southern + Nara one day)? OR
                      b) just remove some smaller temples in my itinerary so as not to be very hectic.

Q2: If we reach Nashiki Market mid afternoon of Day1, then there is a great possibilty that it might be closed already when we reach it, am I right?

Q3: Can you please help me rearrange/Regroup the attractions. Really appreciate it!

Q4: Do we need to buy Kansai Thru Pass 3 day if ever there will be a day3?

I am a bit problematic coz even though I know the Must See Attractions, I am still having a hard time grouping these places into 1 feasible day.
Pls, I need your professional guidance on this matter.

                      Thanks again, Takeshi.

                      Best regards,

                    • Hi Ann,

Q1: a) Do you think we need to allot a third day for Kyoto? (Maybe Eastern kyoto one day; Arashiyama, Central & Northern Kyoto one day, Southern + Nara one day)? OR

It’s hard to say. You have no idea how much you can do now. I have no idea how much you can do either. You will find it when you travel.

Q2: If we reach Nashiki Market mid afternoon of Day1, then there is a great possibilty that it might be closed already when we reach it, am I right?
No. It’s open until around 17:00. This is a retail market. It’s open for daytime.

Q3: Can you please help me rearrange/Regroup the attractions. Really appreciate it!
No, I can’t. As I mentioned, at this point, you and I cannot arrange it. You can keep it until you make this trip.
And also this is that you have to do by yourself. It’s a part of your trip.

Q4: Do we need to buy Kansai Thru Pass 3 day if ever there will be a day3?
I don’t think so. But if you cannot make all places in one day, just visit only Kyoto on day 2 and skip Nara. You can visit Nara on next day by single fare.
This is only way to make an adjustment on the spot.

You may purchase Kansai thru pass 3 days but it may not be necessary.

                      Cheers,

                      *Maruyama Park
                      Gion

Q1: a) Is this type of itinerary feasible?
                      b) If ever you feel that a particular day is tight, can you help me choose the attractions to move to the other day?

Q2: Is the Route/ Order / Grouping of the attractions in a particular day correct?

You mentioned that Nishiki Market is open until 5pm.
Q3: What time do stores at Higashiyama District close?
Q4: How about the Shopping Arcades?

We plan to have dinner at Gion and stroll the area afterwards. Hope to meet some geisha on the way!

It’s feasible. But if you switch Kinkakuji on day 1 and Higashiyama on day 2, it’s much smoother. Higashiyama and Gion are very closed to Nishiki market. Kinkakuji is located at west side. It’s opposite side of Kiyomizudera and Nishiki.

It depends on the store. There are many shops there. I believe most of them opens until 19:00 or 20:00.
Ann, would you mind to stop asking me this type of question? These are basically out of topic on my website. You may find these information by google search.

At last, if you are pretty sure to visit Nara on next day (3rd day), you should purchase 3 days Kansai thru pass. If you are not sure but maybe you can make both Kyoto and Nara, single ticket is your option. But if you have decided it to spend one more day, Kansai thru pass is better option.

                      Cheers,

                      Hi Takeshi san.

Can you pls explain to me the difference between these 3 tickets? There must be something different among these 3.
                      Multiple Ride Card
                      Rainbow Card
                      Enjoy Eco Card

In what instances can these cards be covered.

                      Thanks a lot!

                      Cheers!

                    • Hi Ann san,

Multiple card and Rainbow card are almost same. It’s prepaid card. If you have these card, you can slot this card into ticket gate. You don’t need to purchase a ticket one by one.

Eco card is one day unlimited card. If you take subway more than 4 times a day, this card will be cheaper.

                      Cheers,

Thanks for the reply, Takeshi san.

How about the ICOCA? How does it differ from the Rainbow & Multiply Ride Pass?

                      Thanks again , Takeshi san.!

                      Cheers

                    • Hi Ann san,

Almost same. But you can add more fund into ICOCA. You can use same card until you return it. However you have to pay 500 yen deposit when you have ICOCA.
Both Rainbow card and Multiple card is prepaid card. Once you use all amount of card, you have to buy other card. And also ICOCA can be used for all trains, include JR, private line and subway. Rainbow card covers subway and private lines. Multiple card covers only subway.

                      Cheers,

    Hi Takeshi,

Thanks for your swift reply. I am still finalizing my itinerary. Just want to ask your suggestion. On June 15, will be my last day in Kyoto and I plan to get a hotel in Osaka. I want to go to Nara Deer Park and Shin Kobe Ropeway on said day. After leaving Kyoto hotel what should I do first? Kindly note that my check in my Osaka hotel is at 3pm. I can leave my bags in the locker at Kyoto Station. Should I go to Shin Kobe then comeback for my bag in Kyoto Station then go to Nara before going to Osaka? Or go to Shin Kobe Ropeway, get my bag in Kyoto Station then go to Osaka hotel, leave the bags and go to Nara Deer Park. Which option is realistic, convenient, time and cost effective?

Thanks for the assistance. Really appreciate it.

    Louie

    • Hi Louie,

      Your route is the following:

Kyoto (Kintetsu railway) Kintetsunara (Kintetsu railway-Hashin Railway) Kobe-Sannomiya (bus) Ropeway

You don’t need to go back to Kyoto. It’s just wasting time.

You can get Kobe-Sannomiya from Nara by Kintetsu and Hanashin. These two train companies share the track and they gives you direct access to Kobe from Nara. You don’t need to change the trains in Osaka.

But if you want to leave your bag at your hotel, you can stop by Osaka. It’s up to you.

        Hi Takeshi,

Just want to ask if I will leave my Kyoto hotel and bring my bags, can I leave it in Nara Station? Is there a Nara Station and is that possible?

After which I will follow your advise and go to Kobe. After Kobe, will go back to Nara to get my bags and proceed to Osaka to check in.

        Thanks again.

        • Hi Louie,

You can leave your bag at Nara. But I recommend you to pick up it before leaving Nara. You have to spend another one hour at least for round trip to Nara from Osaka. It’s just wasting time. I recommend you to leave your baggage at hotel in Osaka or store your baggage in Kobe again. Osaka is located in the middle of Nara and Kobe.

          Cheers,

    Hi Takeshi,

Is it possible to buy a round trip ICOCA and Haruka card if I will be using it for: Day 1 – Kansai Airport to Kyoto hotel and for my last day
Day 6 – Dotonbori hotel to Kansai Airport

If yes how much should I be paying? I am confused since the prices just indicate Kyoto or Osaka for roundtrip.

I am not sure if I should follow this itinerary or start my trip in Osaka and end it in Osaka so that I can use the ICOCA and Haruka card.

“Day trip to Kobe and World Heritage Himeji castle.
Use JR Kansai Area Pass one day at 2060 yen.”

    Hi Takeshi,

For trip to Kobe and Himeji using Kansai Area Pass can it be used to ride Sanyo Shinkansen and if yes how much is additional fee?

Also, would like to get your thoughts if a day trip to Nara and Yoshino from Osaka is feasible. Do you have a suggested route and pass we can use? Thanks in advance

    Hi Takeshi,

First ever try to explore JPN for me and my wife. We are trying to plan our itineraries and getting a bit confused with so many information on the web.
Arriving at KIX and leaving from NRT on our last day of 14 days visit. Our initial plan is Osaka-Nara-Kyoto-Tokyo. Is it better to go Osaka-Nara-Kyoto or Osaka-Kyoto-Nara? You think its better to stay in Osaka then make our trips to Kyoto-Nara then Osaka again before heading to Tokyo for the last leg of our visit?

Appreciate your comment and many thanks for the information you are providing on this site.

    Cheers,
    Abetmcd1

    • Hi Abetmcd1,

If you want to stay in each cities, Osaka-Nara-Kyoto is the best route.
If you want to enjoy sightseeing with luggage free, just stay in Osaka and make day trips to Nara and Kyoto.

      Cheers,
