Sorry to trouble you again. Can i buy a single-twin ticket for a single person?

Single Twin : Tokyo – Takamatsu (11.3k fare + 12.6k seat according to Hyperdia)

Let’s say I manage to get the ticket, then can i add another passenger to the room later on? If its possible, does the 2nd passenger pay only the fare or he has to pay the fare + seat?

    Arrigato gozaimasushita!

    1. Hi Manu san,

If another passenger will join your Single Twin compartment, another passenger has to pay a base fare (11,310 yen) + Limited Express fee (3,240 yen). 12,670 yen seat fee includes 9,430 yen compartment fee and 3,240 yen limited express fee. Another passenger does not have to pay 9,430 yen compartment fee because this is charged by compartment. But base fare and limited express fee are charged by person.

      Cheers,

Thanks for the information. But can the another person buy his ticket on the actual day of trip, if my ticket was bought like weeks before the day of the trip? I am checking as he cannot confirm if he is able to join my japan trip so this is more like a last minute thing.

As in like i managed to get the ticket on the day of release (1mth prior), but on the actual day, let’s say the train is fully booked. So will JR allow my friend to buy a ticket to join me if i show them my ticket for the Single-Twin?

        Hontoni Arrigatogozaimasu!
        Maru

        1. Hi Manu san,

The basic way is cancel your ticket and rebook. But if you do this, someone may take it during you return your ticket. There are many who keep looking for a ticket until the departure time. You may lose your space in this a few minutes.

The other way is that your friend purchase a base fare ticket only and ride on the train at your compartment. When the conductor come to your compartment, tell you add one more passengers and pay limited express fee to the conductor on board. This is not a basic way but many local passengers have done this. And they said there was no problem. You can avoid the risk to lose your space.

This is not a basic way and I cannot guarantee 100%. So if you do this, please do it on your risk.

          Cheers,

  2. Hello Takeshi!
I intend to take the train from Tokyo to himeji, so then can contunue my way to Fukuoka. I´ve been reading that its is usually quickly booked… I am travelling in January 2018, do you think that if I book 3 days in advance I may have any chance? Thank you!

    1. Hi Maria,

I cannot say how busy this train will be. If you travel in mid or late January, this is one of the slowest season in Japan. It is usually easier to book than other period. But that’s all I can say that. Whenever I take this train, I have a back up plan in case of booked out.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  3. Hello Takeshi,

my friend and I are planning to visit Japan next year in April. We are planning to take the sunrise seto to Tokyo. After reading on how hard it is to book the sunrise seto, we are quite worried that we won’t be able to get it. Can I get someone else who is visiting Japan in March to buy JR pass for the two of us (under our names) and also book the sunrise seto for us in advance?

Thank you so much for your help!

    Yours sincerely
    Sabrina

    1. Hi Sabrina,

Unfortunately that way is not possible. Because when you book for Sunrise Seto, you have to exchange the pass. And you have to show your passport. And a short term entry stamp must be on the passport.

If you pay a regular fare and ask someone to book, it’s possible. But it is impossible for using JR Pass unfortunately.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  4. Hi Takeshi-san,
    My plan:
2019 Jan 10 (Thurs) – Tokyo to Osaka
2019 Jan 11 (Fri) – Osaka to Tokyo
***I did not buy JR Pass
    ***using Sunrise Seto (00:34)
I plan to use Nozomi Shinkansen travel from Tokyo to Osaka. can i buy Sunrise Seto ticket + solo room at the Tokyo station before heading to Osaka?
    Thank you.

    Chan

  5. Hello, related question to the post below me. Is it possible for a friend to purchase tickets for me and a friend or is it illegal? I do not intend to use the JR pass for this trip and will pay my friend in full. Thanks.

      1. Cool, thanks. Can my friend purchase from a major train station not in Tokyo? I want to have a trip from Tokyo to Okayama and I will hop on a Nozomi to Hiroshima. I want to do this so I can get there earlier rather than faster since no night Shinkansen exists.

  6. Hi Takeshi-san,
I will be buying a JR Pass for my trip to Japan, and want to book the free Sunrise Seto Nobi Nobi seats.
Since it is not possible for me to book the tickets until I land in Japan, it may be sold out. I have a friend who lives in Japan who can buy the tickets 1 month before the departure date. Because I will hold a JR Pass when I land in Japan, will I be able to get the cost of the tickets refunded and keep the reservation?
    Thank you!!

  7. Hello! Our itinerary is as follow:
Day 1: Flight to Osaka (we will reach at night so nothing much)
    Day 2: USJ
    Day 3: Kyoto & Nara
    Day 4: Osaka
Day 5: Arrive in Tokyo, Gotemba
    Day 6: Pokemon, Shinjuku, Megaweb
    Day 7: Harajuku, Shibuya
    Day 8: Hakone (for fun2drive)
Day 9: Tokyo (not exactly sure yet but probably spend the day shopping)
    Day 10: Flight back home

We will arrive in Osaka on 19th June at 9.30pm, and intend to buy take the Sunrise Seto overnight from Day 4 to Day 5 so as to save a night spent at the hotel. We will then fly off from Tokyo on 28th June in the morning.

    I wanted to ask:
    1. If we should get the JR pass (we were planning to use it to book Sunrise seto) or get icoca/suica/tokyo metro cards instead?
    2. How to book Sunrise Seto and if it would be hard to book?
    3. If we should get the Hakone Free Pass?

    Thank you! 🙂

    1. Hi Janice,

JR pass does not work. One way trip from Osaka to Tokyo is not enough to get the worth even though you add some trips when you are in Osaka and Tokyo. So you can use local deals or IC card (ICOCA, Suica) and single fare for Osaka to Tokyo. Please see the links below to find more info:
      https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/airport-access/kansai-kix/how-to-choose-the-deals-for-access-tofrom-kansai-airport.html

You have to book a seat for Sunrise when you arrive in Kansai airport. You can book it at JR Kansai airport station:
      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-osaka.html

However it may be booked out. It’s hard to say how busy it will be. There is no online reservation available. So you have to book it upon arrival and take a risk in case of booked out. If you don’t want to take any risks, consider to take overnight bus:
      https://willerexpress.com/en/

If you drive, Hakone Free Pass is not required. Gotemba is located at northern Hakone. You can visit Hakone and Gotemba same time.

      Cheers,

  8. Dear Takeshi san,
    Thank you for this post.

I am a student in International student in Okayama university. Since i have student visa and not tourist visa, I am not eligible to buy JR rail pass.

So if I want to take Sunrise Seto nobi nobi seat from okayama to tokyo, how much will be the fare? How many days in advance can i make the booking and from where can i make the reservations?

  9. Hi Takeshi-san,

This website is really helpful for those who plan to visit Japan on the first time.
Me and my colleague will visit Tokyo and Osaka. As we want to travel from Tokyo to Osaka with Shinkansen Nozomi and travel back from Osaka to Tokyo by Sunrise Seto in Twin compartment, so we prefer buy normal tickets instead to buy JR Pass.

    1. We thought the perfect compartment for us is Single Twin but suddenly we found from another website that Single Twin does not come with a power outlet. Is it true?

    2. The second option is Sunrise Twin. As you mention additional fare is 10,800 yen per person so we have to add 21,600 yen to book 1 Sunrise Twin compartment. Is that automatically valid for 2 people in 1 ticket or we will get 2 tickets for each person?

    3. During our trip in Tokyo, we need travel around Tokyo Disney Resort, Tokyo Station and Odaiba. Do you think e-money Suica is better for us? Because I am not sure JR Pass could cover all line in Tokyo.

    Thank you very much.

    1. Hi Dayen san,

      1. Both Sunrise twin and Single twin equip a power outlet.

      2. You will receive only one ticket for one compartment.

      3. JR pass covers most part of Tokyo. Please see the link below:
      https://jprail.com/destinations/kanto-area/tokyo-kanto-area/guide-to-take-trains-in-tokyo-how-to-choose-the-best-deal-and-the-best-route-by-train-to-get-the-major-spots.html

Probably Suica is okay for your trip in my thought.

Sunrize twin is very very difficult to book. Good luck.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  10. Konnichiwa Takeshi san,
I am extremely worried about my travel in Sunrose izumo train. The thing is, i arrive in Tokyo on 14th of November and on 16th morning i must be in Yonago. This leaves me one day to buy ticket from Yokohama to Yonago. I would agree for anything actually – nobi nobi zaseki, solo, single – anything to get there. My questions are:
    1) is it any possible that i get any seat during this season? (i would leave evening of Thursday 15th)
    2) prices: i am not quite sure. If we talk about Single
    – the additional fare is 10,800 yen. Is this the price for the ticket if You have JR pass or without it?

Looking forward to hearing from you ASAP

    1. Hi Anastasia san,

It’s hard to say. Many business travelers use this train. So sometimes it is busy in weekday too.
Usually it’s not hard to book a seat if you can take any kinds of seat. If you cannot make it for Yokohama to Yonago, you may try to find a seat for Yokohama to Okayama. Your chance is getting bigger. You can take other train, Limited Express Yakumo. The first departure of this train departs from Okayama about 30 minutes later than Sunrise Izumo. So total trip time is much not different from trip by Sunrise.
      https://jprail.com/trains/sort-by-type/limited-express/limited-express-yakumo.html

If you don’t use JR pass, you have to pay a base fare which is 11,340 yen. And add the accommodation fee which I mentioned on the post.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com
