As the name tells you, Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass covers Kansai area (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Wakayama), Hiroshima and many places between these, such as Okayama, Kurashiki. But the coverage is much bigger. This pass covers even Takamatsu in Shikoku, Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Kii-Katsuura, Shingu.

I would like to share the information about Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass in this post.

Coverage Area

The coverage area of Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass (Click to enlarge)

This pass covers whole part of Kansai area, such as Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara, Kansai Airport, Himeji and Wakayama. And it includes Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. And also this pass includes the conventional lines to Takamatsu in Shikoku, Kinosaki Onsen, Shirahama and Shingu in Kii peninsula, Hikone and Tsuruga too. Of course you can access Himeji, Okayama, Kurashiki, Onomichi, Miyajima and Iwakuni too. In addition, this pass covers Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate. It is a big benefit to visit northern Hyogo region.

If you want to access to Hakata, Yamaguchi or Sanin area, Sanyo Sanin Area Pass is recommended. But it does not include Kinosaki and Kii area.

JR West will also release Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass too. If you need an access to Hiroshima from Hakata side, this pass will be suitable for you.

Other part of Japan, such as Hokkaido, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kanazawa, Takayama, most part of Shikoku and Kyushu are not covered by this Pass. So if you intend to travel throughout Japan or travel to Tokyo, Hokkaido or Kyushu, Japan Rail Pass is maybe more suitable for you.
*Osaka – Tokyo one way trip is not enough to use JR Pass. Please see the the post, Japan Rail Pass user guide. How to use JR Pass to its maximum.

Valid trains, bus services, routes and class

Kyushu Shinkansen Sakura and Mizuho give you direct trainsfer to Shin-Osaka from Kyusyu.
Both Mizuho and Nozomi on Sanyo Shinkansen are covered by this deal.

Miyajima ferry is also covered. You have no problem to access to very popular World Heritage Miyajima.

As of mid April 2017, this pass started to cover JR bus in Kyoto, Fukui and Hiroshima. In Hiroshima, there are some bus routes which are covered by this pass. Especially Hiroshima sightseeing loop bus “Meipuru-pu” is very very useful. You can get most of popular spots in Hiroshima by this bus. Please see the link below:

Hiroshima sightseeing bus Meipuru-pu

In Kyoto, you can get Ryoan-ji temple, Kitano-Tenmangu shrine, Takao area via Nijo. This pass also covers Obamba to/from Omi-Imazu bus service and Sonobe to/from Fukuchiyama bus service.

When you use this deal, there are a few exceptions. You have to know that before you choose this deal. Please see the below to get the detailed information.

The Tokaido Shinkansen among Maibara, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka

Even though it is in the coverage area, you cannot take Shinkansen train in this segment. Because Tokaido Shinkansen belongs to other JR company, JR Central. It is same JR Group company and many trains go through both areas each other. But technically it is different company. Therefore this deal cannot include this Shinkansen segment. When you depart from Kyoto or Maibara and take Shinkansen, you have to take Special Rapid Service to Shin-Osaka and then transfer to Shinkansen train there.

    Hi Takeshi-san,
I am planning our family’s first trip to Japan in April 2016.
    Here is our preliminary itinerary:
Day 1 – arrive at Nankai Airport 7:55pm
    accommodation at Fraser Namba
    Day 2 – day trip to Hiroshima/Mayajima
    Day3- go to kyoto
    Days4-6 – Kyoto
Day 7 – back to osaka or Narra
    Day 8- osaka
    Day 9- Osaka
I am thinking of availing the JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass – 5 days. Use it for sanyo shinkansen to Hiroshima/Miyajima day trip. Then use the same pass for Kyoto via JR Rapid train. While in Kyoto use the same pass for Fushimi Inari and arashiyama.

Would very much appreciate your thoughts and recommendation.

    Hi Takeshi,
I will be travelling with my wife. We’re planning to use a single ticket (pasmo in tokyo, icoca in osaka) till 5/4 and the Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass from 8/4 to 10/4. Will this be cost effecitve? Do you have any alternative suggestion?

We’re planning to take the Nanaki Rap:T to the Airport on 11/4 instead of JR nankai as it may be crowded in the morning.

    Rough itinerary:

31/3 Arrive at Narita Airport. Accomodate at Tokyo, Shinjuku
    1/4 Tokyo
    2/4 Tokyo
    3/4 Tokyo
    4/4 Day trip to Yokohama
5/4 Day trip to Mt Fuji five lakes
6/4 Depart for Kyoto from Tokyo. Accomodate at Kyoto (Gion area)
    7/4 Kyoto
8/4 Depart for Osaka from Kyoto. Accomodate at Fraser Residence (Namba)
    9/4 Day trip to Hiroshima
    10/4 Osaka
11/4 Depart for Kansai Airport from Osaka

    Thanks!

    Hi.

I would like to ask your suggestions for which pass should we get since we find the rail system a bit complicated. We will be travelling to Osaka on February 7 to 19 and our hotel is right next to Namba station. Our itinerary is as follows:

    Day 1 – Arrival
    Day 2 – Rinku Outlets
    Day 3 – Universal Studios
Day 4 – Biwako Valley (Toured)
    Day 5 – Kyoto
    Day 6 – Nara
    Day 7 – Hiroshima/Miyajima
    Day 8 – Osaka
    Day 9 – Osaka (Departure)

    Thanks and regards.

  4. Jade says:

    Hi Takeshi,

Your information is excellent! I was trying to work this out for myself but thought I would ask you. I am trying to work out if the 7-day JR pass is suitable for our trip.

Day 1. Arrive Kansai airport (morning) travel to Kyoto and site see in Kyoto (overnight in Kyoto)
Day 2. Site seeing in Osaka (universal studios) then back to Kyoto (overnight in Kyoto).
Day 3. Travel from Kyoto to Hiroshima and overnight in Miyajima.
Day 4. Travel to Nara and over night in Nara.
Day 5. Travel to Tokyo overnight in Tokyo
Day 6: Possible day trip to Mt Fuji/ site seeing in Tokyo (fly out that night at Narita)

Are we better off getting the Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass, a single one way ticket from Nara to Tokyo and the Tokyo wide pass? Or the 7 day JR pass. Or can you recommend a better way.

Thanks in advance for you help.

    • Hi Jade,

JR pass 7 days is the best deal. You may need to add subway or local bus fare in Tokyo and Kyoto. But most of trips are covered by JR pass. It gives you a great saving.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  5. Jeff says:

    Hi JPRail,

Is the Hamakaze Train covered in the JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass? Thanks.

  6. Miyn546 says:

    Hi Takeshi.
I plan to have a day trip to Miyajima Island during my stay at Osaka. However, I am really confused with the need of buying/utilizing the JR pass, ICOCA-Haruka pass or the area pass.

    My itinerary is as below:
    11-14 March 2016: Kyoto
    15-17 March 2016: Takayama, Shirakawago
18-22 March 2016: Osaka(1 day trip to Miyajima island, 1 day trip to USS Osaka). We will be staying near to Shinsaibashi station.

So, I am wondering is either JR Pass or Kansai-Hiroshima a better option for my trip?

Lets say if I am using Kansai-Hiroshima 5 days pass, can I take Nozomi/Mizuho Shinkansen to Hiroshima from Shin Osaka? And, do I still need to buy a return ICOCA-Haruka pass?

    • Hi Miyn546,

I recommend you to use two different passes, Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass and Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass.
      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/takayama-hokuriku-area-pass-perfect-deal-to-get-takayama-kanazawa-toyama-shirakawago-from-nagoya-or-osaka.html

Even though you have to take the route via Kanazawa to get Shirakawago and Takayama. But this is only pass to cover both Shirakawago and Takayama. You can get Takayama by JR pass. But it does not include bus to Shirakawago but this pass does.

And if you use these two passes, 10 days of your trip are covered by these two passes. If you use JR Pass, it’s valid for 7 days only. The total cost of these two passes is actually cheaper than 7 days JR pass.

If you get Takayama and Shirakawago early, you can start using Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass from Kansai airport on arrival day. In this case, you need to complete this trip by 15th March. You need to add subway pass in Kyoto anyway.

You can use Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass for the last 5 days of your trip.

So the best and most cost saving way is complete Takayama and Shirakawago before Kyoto. In this case, you need these two passes and Kyoto city deals.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

    Hi Takeshi san,

First of all thank you for helping me and my wife plan and decide to get the Kansai Hiroshima JR Pass for our honeymoon trip to Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima in June 2015.

We are going to visit your lovely country again in April 2016 but our itinerary is a bit different this time and for more days as well! 🙂

We are not sure if we should get the JR Kansai Hiroshima or JR Nationwide pass this time.

Based on our Apr 2016 below. Can you please advise us if it is better to get the Kansai Hiroshima or Nationwide pass. Which day do you recommend us to activate the pass? :-

    Tokyo Accomodation: Ikebukuro Area
    Kyoto Accomodation: Kyoto Station Area
    Hiroshima Accomodation: Peace Park Area

Apr 21 (Thu) – Tokyo (AM: Kawasaki day trip. PM: Akihabara)

Apr 22 (Fri) – Tokyo (Whole day: Disney Sea)

Apr 23 (Sat) – Tokyo (Whole day: Shinjuku, Harajuku and Shibuya)

Apr 24 (Sun) – Tokyo (AM: Odaiba PM: Yanaka)

Apr 25 (Mon) – Kyoto (Shinkansen from Tokyo)

    Apr 26 (Tue) – Kyoto

Apr 27 (Wed) – Kyoto (Day trip to Osaka)

Apr 28 (Thu) – Hiroshima (Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka)

    Apr 29 (Fri) – Hiroshima

    Apr 30 (Sat) – Hiroshima

    May 1 (Sun) – Hiroshima

May 2 (Mon) – Hiroshima (fly back to Singapore from Hiroshima Airport)

Thank you Takeshi san in advance and I wish you a pleasant day ahead.

    • Hi Fadzlin san,

Actually I recommend you single ticket more than JR Pass and Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass. If you use single ticket for Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima, it costs around 21000 yen for one base fare ticket (Tokyo-Hiroshima), Shinkansen reserved seat fare (Tokyo-Kyoto and Kyoto-Hiroshima).

If you use Kansai Hiroshima Pass, you have to purchase single ticket for Tokyo to Kyoto. If you use JR pass, the price is 29100 yen for 7 days. Even if you use this pass for sightseeing in Tokyo and day trip to Osaka, it does not reach 29100 yen because single ticket for Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka is 21000 yen.

So I recommend you to use single ticket for long transfer and add single fare or local deals at each cities.
      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/compare-many-discount-tickets-and-passes-for-sightseeing-tokyo-how-to-choose-the-right-tickets.html
      http://www.insidekyoto.com/special-kyoto-bus-train-subway-passes

Single ticket is okay for trip to Osaka and trip to Miyajima.

But if you have plan to go outside Hiroshima other than Miyajima, JR pass may be cheaper. If you are not sure at this point and you may change your mind, you can go for 7 days JR pass. At this point, roughly the difference between 7 days JR pass and single ticket/local deal is about 4000 yen. If you travel outside Hiroshima, you can spend 4000 yen value easily. And it’s much easier to use than single ticket and local deal combination.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • Fadzlin says:

        Hi Takeshi san,

Thank you so much for your usual prompt reply and your very useful advice. I’m so grateful.

However, please pardon my ignorance and stupidity.

        You mentioned:-

“If you use single ticket for Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima, it costs around 21000 yen for one base fare ticket (Tokyo-Hiroshima), Shinkansen reserved seat fare (Tokyo-Kyoto and Kyoto-Hiroshima).”

I’m sorry I’m a bit confused by the above. I tried to google to understand how the base fare works but I can’t.

How and where do I purchase this base fare plus the reserved seats for both Tokyo-Kyoto and Kyoto-Hiroshima?

For example, if I would like to purchase the above on my first day when I arrive Ikebukuro Station, can I do it there? How do I go about doing this if let’s say I would like to opt for reserved seating for Tokyo-Kyoto and Kyoto-Hiroshima. How much will this cost me in total?

Thank you so much Takeshi san and I apologize again for my stupidity.

        Best Regards,
        Fadzlin

        • Hi Fadzlin san,

You can purchase all tickets at once at any major JR stations. Of course you can purchase it at Ikebukuro station. Actually in Tokyo, you can do it at most of JR stations. There are Midori no Madoguchi (reservation window) in the station. You can purchase the tickets in advance. You don’t need to purchase in departure day. You can purchase it anytime after you arrive in Japan.

Please make sure that you need only one base fare ticket from Tokyo to Hiroshima. And you need to have two Shinkansen surcharge ticket for Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Hiroshima. Otherwise you may get two separated base fare ticket for Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Hiroshima. It’s more expensive. You can stopover at Kyoto by one base fare ticket.

          Good luck!

          Cheers,

          Takeshi / JPRail.com

As an international student, which are my options to take a pass for going to a trip from kobe to hiroshima? Thank you ^^

    • Hi puchiguso,

There is no deals available to take a train for student and resident as far as I know.
Local traveller who want to save the cost use the bus. Try to google Kobe Hiroshima bus. You may find some. But I think most of the sites are shown in Japanese only.

  10. Winnie says:

    Hi Takeshi,

I’m planning for a trip in April 2016 and I’m not sure which pass I should get. Below is my rough itinerary.

Day 1 – arrive at Kansai Intl Airport around 9.15pm
    Accommodation at Osaka

    Day 2 – Osaka

    Day 3 – Osaka

Day 4 – Mount Yoshino / Nara or Himeji / Kobe

Day 5 – Miyajima / Iwakuni (accommodation at Hiroshima)

Day 6 – Hiroshima to Kyoto

    Day 7 – Kyoto

    Day 8 – Kyoto

Day 9 – Kyoto to Kansai Intl Airport

Should I get the Kansai Hiroshima pass plus the ICOCA and Haruka? Which day should I start using the Kansai Hiroshima pass? Does it cover subway or buses in Osaka and Kyoto? I’m really very confused. Thanks for your kind advise.

    • Hi Winnie,

You may need round trip ICOCA and Haruka if you go to Himeji and Kobe. Because you need to start using Kansai Hiroshima Pass on day 4. But if you go to Yoshino/Nara, you need one way ICOCA and Haruka and start using Kansai Hiroshima Pass on day 5. And you need to add Kintetsu pass one day for Nara and Yoshino.
      http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/ticket/krp_1day2day.html

But Yoshino is outside coverage area. You can take Kintetsu train from Nara to access Yoshino. So you need to add extra fare when you exit Yoshino station.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • Winnie Lim says:

        Hi Takeshi,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I understand that the Kansai Hiroshima Pass cannot be used for reserved seating. If I want to get reserved seating, should i get the 7 days JR pass instead? Would the 7 days JR pass cover the same area and transport as the Kansai Hiroshima Pass?

        • Hi Winnie,

JR Pass is too expensive and extra reserved seat fee on top of the pass is not a good idea either. I have a suggestion to get a seat on non reserved car. Please see the timetable at the link below:
          http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/_pdf/westbound.pdf

There are many trains that depart from Shin-Osaka, like Mizuho (“M”) 401, Sakusa (“S”) 541. Train is empty when it comes to the platform. If you take other trains that come from Tokyo, many seats are occupied when it comes to Shin-Osaka. So the key is pick up the train that depart from Shin-Osaka. It’s quite easy to get a seat on these trains.

When you go back to Osaka from Hiroshima, you can use same way. But the trains that depart from Hiroshima are not many. Please see the link below and you can find which train depart from Hiroshima.
          http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/_pdf/eastbound.pdf

          Cheers,

          Takeshi / JPRail.com

          • Winnie Lim says:

            Hi Takeshi,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I’m still quite confused by the different trains.

I checked HyperDia and noted that travelling from Osaka to Hiroshima and Hiroshima to Kyoto would be via SHINKANSEN NOZOMI or SHINKANSEN MIZUHO or SHINKANSEN SAKURA.

Can I confirm that these trains are covered under the Hiroshima Kansai Area pass?

You mentioned that the exceptions of this pass is the Tokaido Shinkansen among Maibara, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. Does this affect me?

Thanks once again and sorry for asking so many questions.

            • Hi Winnie,

              No worries.
You cannot get Kyoto by Shinkansen. When you go to Kyoto from Hiroshima, you have to get off Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka and transfer to special rapid train to Kyoto.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com
