As the name tells you, Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass covers Kansai area (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Wakayama), Hiroshima and many places between these, such as Okayama, Kurashiki. But the coverage is much bigger. This pass covers even Takamatsu in Shikoku, Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Kii-Katsuura, Shingu.
I would like to share the information about Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass in this post.
Coverage Area
This pass covers whole part of Kansai area, such as Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara, Kansai Airport, Himeji and Wakayama. And it includes Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. And also this pass includes the conventional lines to Takamatsu in Shikoku, Kinosaki Onsen, Shirahama and Shingu in Kii peninsula, Hikone and Tsuruga too. Of course you can access Himeji, Okayama, Kurashiki, Onomichi, Miyajima and Iwakuni too. In addition, this pass covers Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate. It is a big benefit to visit northern Hyogo region.
If you want to access to Hakata, Yamaguchi or Sanin area, Sanyo Sanin Area Pass is recommended. But it does not include Kinosaki and Kii area.
JR West will also release Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass too. If you need an access to Hiroshima from Hakata side, this pass will be suitable for you.
Other part of Japan, such as Hokkaido, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kanazawa, Takayama, most part of Shikoku and Kyushu are not covered by this Pass. So if you intend to travel throughout Japan or travel to Tokyo, Hokkaido or Kyushu, Japan Rail Pass is maybe more suitable for you.
*Osaka – Tokyo one way trip is not enough to use JR Pass. Please see the the post, Japan Rail Pass user guide. How to use JR Pass to its maximum.
Valid trains, bus services, routes and class

All daytime trains in coverage area are covered. But reserved seat fee is NOT included as well. You have to take non reserved ordinary seat. Most of limited express and Shinkansen trains have non reserved seat. And Green seat is not covered fully either. If you want to take Green seat, this pass covers base fare only. You have to full of surcharge and Green seat fare.
Overnight option is not available in the coverage area. There are two overnight trains, Sunrise Izumo and Sunrise Seto are depart/arrive in the coverage area. But these trains run to Tokyo. You cannot stay overnight in the coverage ares by this pass.
Miyajima ferry is also covered. You have no problem to access to very popular World Heritage Miyajima.
As of mid April 2017, this pass started to cover JR bus in Kyoto, Fukui and Hiroshima. In Hiroshima, there are some bus routes which are covered by this pass. Especially Hiroshima sightseeing loop bus “Meipuru-pu” is very very useful. You can get most of popular spots in Hiroshima by this bus. Please see the link below:
Hiroshima sightseeing bus Meipuru-pu
In Kyoto, you can get Ryoan-ji temple, Kitano-Tenmangu shrine, Takao area via Nijo. This pass also covers Obamba to/from Omi-Imazu bus service and Sonobe to/from Fukuchiyama bus service.
This pass also started to cover Kyoto Tango railway as of mid April, 2017. You can get Amanohashidate, Miyazu without any extra charge.
When you use this deal, there are a few exceptions. You have to know that before you choose this deal. Please see the below to get the detailed information.
The Tokaido Shinkansen among Maibara, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka
Even though it is in the coverage area, you cannot take Shinkansen train in this segment. Because Tokaido Shinkansen belongs to other JR company, JR Central. It is same JR Group company and many trains go through both areas each other. But technically it is different company. Therefore this deal cannot include this Shinkansen segment. When you depart from Kyoto or Maibara and take Shinkansen, you have to take Special Rapid Service to Shin-Osaka and then transfer to Shinkansen train there.

Comments
Hi Takeshi
For New Jr kansai Hiroshima pass, I have question.
It said that ” Unlimited use of non-reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen (including Nozomi and Mizuho) between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. However, the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Osaka is not covered. ”
It means that i can not use Nozomi and Mizuho between ShinOsaka to Kyoto if i want to visit Kyoto and Nara from Osaka , but between shinOsaka to Hiroshima it will be no ploblem ?
THANKS A LOT
Hi Sakuntala,
The reason why Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto is not covered is not JR West railways. Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo belongs to JR Central. It’s same JR group but not same company. That is why JR West pass (Kansai Hiroshima Pass) does not cover this Shinkansen segment.
You can use this pass for trip to Nara, Kyoto or other areas in Kansai. But you have to take other than Shinkansen. Of course you can take Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. Because this belongs to JR West.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Thank u Takeshi
I will wait to have this pass for my tour on 22 April to 3 May.
Sakuntala Thailand
No problem, Sakuntala.
Enjoy your trip.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Also…. 🙂 if I buy it online in Japan…do I pick it up or get an email?? How does it work?
Thanks
Hi Jess,
I don’t know when JR West will update the website either. It seems that they don’t update it until end of this month.
All I can say that just keep checking the website. You can purchase it online in Japan anyway. Even if you purchase it online, you have to exchange the pass at the station. You will receive confirmation number only.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Hi,
I am very frustrated. 🙁 I can’t seem to find the link anywhere I know it’s valid after March 1 but though you could buy it 28 days prior. I arrive in Japan feb 26 and will by wanting the pass from March 3 but I am worried in case I can’t buy it there. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks jess
Does the pass cover the Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus?
Also, I am still not able to locate the website to purchase the pass on line. I will be arriving Osaka on 22 March. Your assistance will be much appreciated. Thanks
Hi Kim,
I’m not sure, but I don’t think this pass cover this pass. Because current pass, JR West’s Sanyo Area Pass does not cover this bus. I think only JR Pass user is allowed to take this bus at free of charge.
I have checked JR West website several times. I couldn’t find it either. i don’t think they update it until 1st March.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
I have 2 questions about using Kansai Hiroshima area pass.
1. Can I use this pass between Shin-Osaka station – Himeji station by Sanyo Shinkansen?
2. I will arrive KIX on 9 March 2015. I have read that the pass can be purchased 28 days so that day is 12 March. Can I purchase before or after 12 March?
Thank you,
Pooh
Hi Pooh,
1) Yes you can.
2) I think so. This pass is supposed to be on website now because it will be on sale on March 1. But I couldn’t find it yet. Just keep checking JR West official website. I think it’s coming soon.

Hi Takeshi,
Will the kansai hiroshima pass pays off if my itinerary are as follows:
11 march: arrive KIX, go direct to Miyajima – stay overnight.
12th: hiroshima, continue to kyoto
12-14th: kyoto, with daytrip to nara.
Is this pass include train out from KIX, or should i get a different pass (such as icoca-haruka pass) on top of this kansai hiroshima pass?
Thanks so much for the advice..
Hi Pika,
Yes, it will pay off.
You can use Haruka express from KIX by this pass.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
can i use all jr train by this pass from kansai airport to osaka too?
I’m looking forward for this pass!
Planning to visit both of Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara) and Hiroshima (Miyajima, Kurashiki and Okunoshima) in autumn 2015 or spring 2016.
Hopefully this pass will be a permanent one instead of temporary offer.
Btw, you’ve done a great job in guiding and elaborating on travel in Japan.
Big-big thanks!
HI Laila,
Thank you very much for your comment about my website.
This pass is not a seasonal offer. It will be on sale in autumn 2015 and spring 2016.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Dear Takeshi,
Since Hiroshima Kansai Area Pass only available on 1st March 2015, what is perfect pass for me to buy? I will arrive at Kansai on 17 January 2015 and my destination is Osaka, Hiroshima, Kobe and Kyoto.
Should I consider Kansai Wide Area Pass if I wanna go to Hiroshima from Osaka?
Thank you so much.
Hi So,
At this point, the cheapest option is Kansai Wide Area Pass plus extra fare for Okayama-Hiroshima. But this pass does not cover any reserved seat. If you want to reserve seat, Sanyo Area Pass is your choice. Both pass covers local trains in Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Can this be purchased by Japanese citizens living abroad like the japan rail pass?
Hi Bluemeansgo,
Unfortunately not. It’s available for overseas tourist who has foreign passport.
Cheers,
