The Shinkansen is the high speed train and the speed of the Shinkansen save your trip time. There are many Shinkansen lines in Japan now. In this post, I will explain you the Tokaido Shinkansen which is the first Shinkansen line in Japan. And also I will explain you the Sanyo and the Kyushu Shinkansen too. Because these two Shinkansen lines are connected with the Tokaido Shinkansen.

Overview
The Shinkansen line between Tokyo and Kagoshima-Chuo is one train line but this line is divided by three different segments. Because three JR companies own this Shinkansen line and the name of the line is the different by the segment.
The first segment is called the Tokaido Shinkansen runs between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka.
It is the first ever Shinkansen line in Japan. And this is known as the busiest Shinkansen line and one of the busiest train line in all Japan railway lines. The Tokaido Shinkansen is owned by JR Central.
The Sanyo Shinkansen is operated between Shin-Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima and Hakata (Fukuoka) which is owned by JR West.
And the Kyushu Shinkansen runs between Hakata, Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo that is owned by JR Kyushu.
But in the train operation, many trains cross the border and run on two segments.
Train operation
Shin-Osaka and Hakata are the border station but you may not be able to find the difference and the border. Please see the operation map below:
Many trains, such as Nozomi, Mizuho cross the border and run through two Shinkansen lines, such as Tokyo to Hakata by Nozomi, Shin-Osaka to Kagoshima-Chuo by Mizuho.
Types of train
There are six types of trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Sanyo Shinkansen and the Kyushu Shinkansen.
Nozomi
Nozomi is the fastest train on the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen. Nozomi runs every 10 minutes during daytime between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, and run every 30 minutes between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima or Hakata.
All Nozomi stops at Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Okayama, Hiroshima, Kokura and Hakata. Some Nozomi stops Nishi-Akashi, Himeji, Fukuyama, Tokuyama and Shin-Yamaguchi. Nozomi does not go further than Hakata. Mizuho and Sakura run between Shin-Osaka, Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. I will explain about these trains later.
JR Pass is NOT valid for Nozomi. If you want to take Nozomi, you have to pay the full fare. There is no deals available to cover Nozomi between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka other than the travel package by some travel agents.

Hikari
Hikari is the second fastest train on the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen. If you travel between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka by JR Pass, Hikari is your choice because Nozomi is not covered as I explained above.
Most of Hikari runs between Tokyo, Shin-Osaka and Okayama. Hikari which goes to Hiroshima and Hakata is very few. I will explain about other train, Sakura later which is covered by JR pass on the Sanyo and the Kyushu Shinkansen.
All Hikari stops at Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Himeji, Okayama, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Shin-Shimonoseki, Kokura and Hakata. Many Hikari stop at Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Gifu-Hashima, Maibara, Nishi-Akashi and Aioi. Some Hikari also stop at Odawara, Atami, Mishima and Toyohashi.

Kodama
Kodama is the slowest train and stops at all stations on the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen. At this point, only Kodama stops at the following stations:
- Shin-Fuji
- Kakegawa
- Mikawa-Anjo
- Asa
This is covered by JR Pass. But the trip time is significantly longer than Hikari and Sakura. If you need to access one of these above stations, you have to take Kodama. Otherwise try to take Hikari or Sakura to save your trip time.
Kodama runs all part of the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen. But there is no Kodama which goes through from Tokyo to Hakata. Kodama run between Tokyo and Nagoya, Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, Shin-Osaka and Hakata. But many Kodama run on the short distance, such as Tokyo to Mishima.

Platt Kodama, Tokyo-Nagoya-Kyoto-Osaka deal
Kodama is covered by JR Pass. But if you want to travel one way from Tokyo to Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka or versa, Platt Kodama is a good deal. JR Pass is too much for just one way trip between Tokyo and Osaka or Kyoto. Please refer the post below to find the detailed information:
Mizuho
Mizuho is the fastest train on the Sanyo Shinkansen and the Kyushu Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kagoshima-Chuo. This train runs about 6 to 8 round trips a day. The number of trips are varied by the season.
All Mizuho stops at Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Okayama, Hiroshima and Kokura, Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. Some Mizuho stops Himeji, Kurume and Sendai.
JR Pass is NOT valid for Mizuho. If you want to take Mizuho, you have to pay the full fare. But if you use JR West deals and JR Kyushu deals, such as Sanyo Sanin Area Pass, Kansai Wide Area Pass, Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass, Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass, Kyushu Rail Pass and some more deals, you can take Mizuho.

If you travel between Shin-Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima and Hakata, Mizuho and Sakura are better choice than Nozomi and Hikari. I will show you the photos later in this post.
Sakura
Sakura is the second fastest train on the Sanyo Shinkansen and the Kyushu Shinkansen. If you travel between Shin-Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima, Hakata, Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo by JR Pass, Sakura is your choice because Nozomi and Mizuho is not covered as I explained above. You can take Hikari as well between Shin-Osaka and Hakata but Sakura has better seat in reserved ordinary class. I will show you the photos later in this post.
Most of Sakura runs between Shin-Osaka and Kagoshima-Chuo. All Sakura stops at Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Okayama, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Kokura, Hakata, Shin-Tosu, Kurume, Kumamoto, Sendai and Kagoshima-Chuo. Many Sakura stops at Fukuyama, Shin-Yatsushiro, Shin-Minamata and Izumi. Some Sakura also stop at Himeji, Tokuyama, Shin-Yamaguchi, Shin-Shimonoseki, Chikugo-Funagoya, Shin-Omuta and Shin-Tamana.

Tsubame
Tsubame is the slowest train and stops at all stations on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo. But in the day time, Tsubame mostly runs between Hakata and Kumamoto. Sakura covers the segment between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. This train is covered by JR Pass.

The accommodation is a bit different from the fleets. There are several kinds of the fleet to be used for the Shinkansen trains.
N700 and 700 series (Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama)
All Nozomi and most Hikari are operated by these train sets. And also these train sets are also used for Kodama 16 cars formation on the Tokaido Shinkansen. N700 and 700 almost same in these two train sets.
Green class seat
Ordinary class seat (reserved and non reserved)
The interior is exactly same in both the reserved and non reserved ordinary class seats.
Sanitary facility
Smoking space
N700-7000/8000 series (Mizuho, Sakura)
All Mizuho, most Sakura and very few Tsubame are operated by this fleet.
Green class seat
Reserved ordinary class seats
N700-7000 offers better accommodation in the reserved ordinary class seat than other Shinkansen fleets. This is the reason why I recommend you to take Mizuho or Sakura more than Nozomi and Hikari.
Non reserved ordinary class
Non reserved ordinary class is same accommodation as other ordinary class seat.
Sanitary facility
Other facilities
500 series (Kodama on the Sanyo Shinkansen)
This fleet was used for Nozomi before. The style of this fleet is still very updated and cool. Now this fleet is used for Kodama on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. This train set does not provide Green class seat. But the reserved ordinary seat is better than non reserved seat.
Reserved ordinary class seat
Non reserved ordinary class seat
Other facilities
800 series (Tsubame and a few Sakura)
This train set is used for Tsubame on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo. It is also used for a few Sakura which runs in Kyushu only. This train set does not run on the Sanyo Shinkansen segment.
This train set provide only one class seat which is the ordinary class. There is no difference between reserved and non reserved. But this ordinary class is much wider than other ordinary class seat. And this is made of lots of wood material. The atmosphere is totally different from other Shinkansen fleets.
Ordinary class seat
Other facilities
The coverage by the rail passes
There are many rail passes available. You may be confused which Shinkansen train and class are covered by the pass. Please see the table below:
Type of pass | Coverage |
---|---|
JR Pass Green | All seats on all Shinkansen trains other than Nozomi and Mizuho |
JR Pass Ordinary | Both reserved and non reserved on all Shinkansen trains other than Nozomi and Mizuho |
JR West Kansai Area Pass | This pass does not cover any Shinkansen trains |
JR West Kansai Wide Area Pass | Only non reserved ordinary seat of all Shinkansen trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen trains between Shin-Osaka and Okayama |
JR West Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass | Only non reserved ordinary seat of all Shinkansen trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen trains between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima |
JR West Sanyo Sanin Area Pass | Both reserved and non reserved seats of all Shinkansen trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata |
JR West Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass | Only non reserved ordinary seat of all Shinkansen trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen trains between Hiroshima and Hakata |
JR West Hiroshima Okayama Yamaguchi Area Pass | Only non reserved ordinary seat of all Shinkansen trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen trains between Okayama and Hakata |
All Kyushu Rail Pass | Both reserved and non reserved seats of all Shinkansen trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo |
Northern Kyushu Rail Pass | Both reserved and non reserved seats of all Shinkansen trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kumamoto |
Southern Kyushu Rail Pass | Both reserved and non reserved seats of all Shinkansen trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo |
Kyushu Rail Pass Fukuoka Wide | This pass does not cover any Shinkansen trains. |
The summary
If you take the Shinkansen by JR Pass, Hikari is the choice for your travel between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. But if you travel to the west from Shin-Osaka, Sakura has better interior as you saw. Sakura is more recommended.
If you use JR West passes, you can use any trains. But most JR West deals cover only non reserved seat. You cannot get a benefit of better seat in the reserved car.
If you travel in Kyushu by Kyushu Rail Pass, 800 series is very interesting train set. Tsubame is slow train but this is operated by this series. You may take this train too.
I hope this Shinkansen ride guide gives you many ideas. And I am glad if you use this guide to build your trip plan.

Hi Takeshi-san,
We are planning to use kodoma trains from osaka to Shibuya/Tokyo on May 14.
We will arrive kansai airport on May 10, Can we buy tickets for kodoma trains at kansai airport ?
Thank you very much!
Hi Misel san,
If you intend to purchase a regular ticket, you can purchase it in Kansai airport station. But if you go to Shin-Osaka and purchase Platt Kodama, you can get some savings.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/platt-kodama-one-way-deal-among-tokyo-nagoya-kyoto-and-shin-osaka-by-shinkansen.html
You cannot purchase Platt Kodama in Kansai airport station.
Cheers,

Hi Takashi,
Do you think it’s worth it to go froth and back or round trip from osaka to kyoto? since I believe in Kyoto is most likely place is filled with temple and garden. Correct me if I’m wrong but I know since from osaka to kyoto only take 1 hour we want to stay in osaka and then just go to Kyoto early morning round trip, but we’re not sure about the train and should we be worry about train if we have japan rail pass?
Should we go from shin-osaka with hikari to kyoto ? and you said every 30 minutes hikari train will depart and available at shin-osaka right ?
Hi McRaven,
You can make one day trip to Kyoto from Osaka pretty easily. It takes less than one hour. Most of visitors visit Kyoto from Osaka. Especially if you want to avoid to travel with luggage. day trip to Kyoto from Osaka is practical.
You can take Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto. But you can take regular trains too. Actually regular train, Special Rapid connects Osaka and Kyoto in 30 minutes. It’s a sort of commute train and it does not give you deluxe interior, like Shinkansen. But you don’t need to change trains at Shin-Osaka. Special rapid may be faster than even Shinkansen.

Hi Takeshi-san,
We are heading to Japan early July. We will be arriving in Haneda airport and then we have to catch the bullet train to Kyoto. Can you please give me a run down on what to do?
Thanks!
Hi Sandy san,
If you want to use single fare ticket, you can purchase and book Shinkansen (bullet train) ticket at Haneda airport ticket counter.
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/airport-access/haneda/how-to-access-from-haneda-airport-to-downtown-tokyo.html
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/customer_support/service_center_haneda.html?src=gnavi
And then take Keihin Kyuko railway to get Shinagawa. You can catch Shinkansen to Kyoto at Shinagawa.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/station-information/shinagawa-station-guide-transfer-among-shinkansen-keihin-kyuko-to-haneda-narita-express.html
Keihin Kyuko railway is different train company from Shinkansen. You need to buy ticket at the vending machine for Haneda airport to Shinagawa.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Takeshi-san,
When purchasing a ticket for the Shinkansen at Haneda Airport, do we have to pick a specific time to catch the Shinkansen because I’m not sure how long it’ll take us to get Shinagawa.
Thanks!
Hi Sandy san,
If you want to reserve your seat, you have to pick the specific train. You can buy non reserved seat ticket. You can take any trains on same day. But you have to find unoccupied seat in non reserved car. In worst case, you will be standing passenger.
It takes 20 minutes to get Shinagawa from Haneda by Keihin Kyuko. All info are shown in the link about Haneda airport which I gave you in previous reply. Please read it once more to make sure.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi-San,
When we purchase our ticket for the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, are we able to pay by credit card? Or do they only accept yen or us money?
Hi Sandy san,
You can pay by credit card.
Cheers,

Hi Takeshi,
My name is Ms Miki, I would like to seek your advise on the following itinerary I had set up, had some difficulties understanding the train in Japan, hope you can give me a helping hand.
Question 1 :-
Tokyo to Osaka (Bullet Train)
Osaka to Kyoto (Bullet Train – Return tickets)
Osaka to Hakone ( Travel by what is the best ? )
Hakone to Tokyo (Travel by what is the best ? )
Question 2 :-
In within Tokyo / Osaka / Kyoto / Hakone – can i get the intercity bus/subway/train tickets at the place itself and please advise what’s the name of each tickets too?
Of all the above route – Do i have to purchase the tickets ahead of time (via online) or at the station itself ?
Thanks Takeshi!
Hi Miki,
You can use JR pass 7 days. You can use JR Pass in Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo to take a local train. But some places cannot be accessed by JR Pass. And you can get Odawara on the way to Hakone. But Hakone itself is not covered. You may find the detailed info in the link below:

Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
Thank you so much for the information, much appreciated. I will give it a read. The JR pass is a good choice for the places am going. And below are few more questions that i need clarifications
JR Pass –
1) Is it multiple usage ?
2) I can chose to drop off at any station along the line?
3) From Tokyo to Shin Osaka/Kyoto – I can only take the Hikari , the 2nd fastest train after Nozomi ? Understand Nozomi is not covered in JR pass
Other Subway/Trains without JR Pass –
I can get the tickets at the train station to move around ?
To get into Hakone, is to drop off at Odawara and follow your website advise on the path to get into Hakone? May I know from Shin Osaka to Odawara takes how long, and Odawara to Tokyo?
Thanks for the advise again!
Hi Miki,
1. It gives you unlimited travel.
2. You can hop in and off at any JR stations.
3. exactly.
You can purchase a ticket at the vending machine at the station for taking subway. Or you can use other deal.

Below are the places, am visiting when am in Japan. And I will have 7days JR Pass. I would like to ask, for Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, do i need extra train tickets on top of the JR pass to travel around these places, or is there any universal train tickets that I can purchase when am there. Please advise =)
Kyoto – Arashiyama, Fushimi, Nishiki Fish Market, Gion
Osaka – Dotonbori, USJ, Minoo Park, Namba, Shinsaibashi
Tokyo – Ginza, Sensoji Temple, Tsukiji, Shinjuku Gyeon, Shibuya

Hello Takeshi san,
Can you please advise, what kind of transfer time/walking time should we allow if arriving in Shin Osaka on Midosuji subway line, in order to catch the Nozomi Shinkansen departing at 1.50pm for Shinagawa, including time to buy/book the Shinkansen ticket.
Or can we buy/book the Shinkansen ticket an earlier day or elsewhere while in Osaka?
Cheers.
Hi Michale san,
You can purchase Nozomi ticket in advance at most of JR stations. In downtown Osaka, most of JR stations have Midori no Madoguchi (reservation window). You can purchase it in advance. Please see the link below:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/how-to-reserve-seat.html
You can find info about transfer at Shin-Osaka in the link below:

Hello Takeshi san,
Thank you again for the info, much appreciated.
I have read the guide and good info to know. I saw that it mentions on sometimes weekdays would be maybe better not to take reserved seat, we were planning on Tuesday 6th June to take this journey from Shin-Osaka.
I realise it is still two months away, and anything can be unpredictable, but being a Tuesday and it is not any kind of peak period on 6th June, correct? Are we taking big chance to be waiting for the train 30 minutes early with no reserved seat? Plus we will be boarding the train at Shin-Osaka, which is the originating station of the 1.50pm Nozomi, correct?
How many carriages is the Nozomi usually, and out of these, how many are for non-reserved only?
Cheers.
Hi Michael san,
Please see the link below to find the timetable. You can find where Nozomi which you intend to take depart from.
http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/_pdf/eastbound.pdf
June 6 is not peak season and if you wait 30 minutes prior to departure time, you will be okay. I think 20 minutes is enough.
By the way, Shinkansen train is busy in both weekday and weekend. Lots of business travelers use this train too.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hello,
I will be travelling to Osaka in a weeks time and will be heading to Kyoto, Kobe and Nara. Which pass would be more advantageous to buy especially when we would want to experience the Shinkansen at least once.
Cheers
Hi Hui,
If you visit Kyoto, Kobe and Nara, there is no deals to cover Shinkansen. You can use one of the deals in the link below, but you have to add single fare to take Shinkansen.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/how-to-choose-discount-railway-ticket-and-pass-in-kansai-area.html
Base fare + Shinkansen seat fee (non reserved) is around 1500 yen for either Shin-Osaka to Shin-Kobe or Shin-Osaka to Kyoto.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Is it necessary to book a seat traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto on a friday
Hi Douglas,
It’s not required. You can take non reserved seat.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hello Takeshita-san, I looked at the timetable for Hikari. I assume all times given are departure time from each station. How many minutes does the train stay at each stop?
Thank you. I’m looking forward to my trip in May.
Hi Kay,
It depends on train. In most of cases, train stops for 1-2 minutes. But somteimes trains stop at the station for 5 minutes when train is passed by other faster train.
If you really want this information, you can find it at Hyperdia.

Hi Takeshi-san,
I will be in Japan for a week in May, and stay in Shinjuku for 4 days before heading to Osaka. In osaka, I will make a day trip to Kyoto by train. I intend to take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tyoko station to shin-osaka. Is it more economical for me to buy the JR Pass to use for all these travelling?
Thank you for your kind help and advice in advance.
Best regards,
Kelly from Singapore
Hi Kelly san,
If you go back to Tokyo after staying Kyoto and Osaka, JR pass is your choice. Because 7 days pass is almost equal to round trip fare by Shinkansen. But if you have one way trip, single fare is cheaper. You may think about using Platt Kodama.

Hello ~
We are flying to Narita next week, during our stay (we will be staying in Minato-ku) we would like to go to Toyohashi City for one day, as well as Kyoto a different day. Can you please tell me the best way to get there. Do I need to purchase tickets prior to leaving the US? I keep reading about exchanging, I’m confused what I need to do – can you please help. Thank you so much! Jennifer
Hi Jennifer,
Both places can be accessed by Shinkansen in the post above. You can get the timetable of Shinkanse in the links below:

You should use JR pass 7 days. It’s way cheaper than single fares.

You also can take Narita Express by JR pass.
