I have received many inquiries about Nagoya-Osaka or Kyoto trip. There are lots of travellers who arrive in Chubu (Nagoya) airport and depart from Kansai (Osaka) airport or reverse or arrive in/depart from Chubu. Even if you have round trip between Nagoya and Osaka, JR Pass is too expensive choice. And there is no options to cover both Nagoya and Osaka/Kyoto by JR. One way ticket from Nagoya to Osaka or Kyoto by Shinkansen is very common choice. However JR is not only railway that connect Nagoya, Osaka and Kyoto. Kintetsu Railway that is the biggest private railway company operates many trains among these three cities, Nara, Ise and Yoshino. Kintetsu Railway has very useful deal for the travellers who want to travel in this area.
In this post, I would like to show you Kintetsu Rail Pass and Kintetsu Rail Pass Wide.
What is Kintetsu Railway?
In Japan, there are many railway services. This is the biggest reason why you are very confused. Kintetsu Railway is NON JR and the biggest private railway company in Japan. Of course this railway service is not covered by any JR deals, such as JR Pass, Kansai Area Pass. Please see the map below to find Kintetsu Railway network.
Kintetsu Rail Pass covers all part of this network. As you see the map above, you can use this railway to get Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka (Namba, Uehonmachi, Tsuruhashi), Nara, Yoshino and Ise. And this pass includes three vouchers to take Kintetsu Railway Limited Express. Kintetsu Railway Limited Express has very nice accommodation and have same level service as JR’s limited express train. I tell you about detail of this limited express train and coverage below.
You may know about Kansai Thru Pass. This pass covers Kintetsu Railway and other major private railways in Kansai area. But this pass does not include Nagoya and Ise. And it does not include Kintetsu Railway Limited Express train voucher. As long as you travel both Nagoya and Osaka/Kyoto, Kansai Thru Pass is not your first choice. Please find the detailed about Kansai Thru Pass at the link below:
How to use Kansai Thru Pass. Compare pass and single fare.
How good is Kintetsu Railway Limited Express?
Some of major private railway companies operate limited express as commute train without extra charge, such as Hankyu, Keihan and Hanshin. But Kintetsu operates limited express as special train. It has reserved seat only. You have to pay limited express surcharge on top of base fare and this limited express train has same level of interior as JR’s limited express train.
There are many kinds of fleets for limited express trains. But all fleets have 2+2 seat configuration and seat pitch is 1000 to 1050 mm. It is spacious and comfortable.
Especially if you travel between Nagoya and Osaka, trip time is more than 2 hours. The seat and interior are very important factor.
You can take limited express train up to three times by Kintetsu Rail Pass if you use it until the end of September, 2016. After 1st of October, 2016, you have to purchase a separate ticket to take limited express train.
Who is eligible
Visitors who land as “Temporary Visitor” status can purchase this pass. And Japanese who live in foreign country as permanent resident or who are married to a foreigner residing outside of Japan can purchase this deal as well.
Types and prices
A few types of pass, Kintetsu Rail Pass and Kintetsu Rail Pass wide are available.
Types | Purchase outside Japan | Purchase in Japan |
---|---|---|
Kintetsu Rail Pass 5-day | 3,700 yen | 3,900 yen |
Kintetsu Rail Pass Plus 5-day | 4,900 yen | 5,100 yen |
Child price is half amount of the adult price. It applies to child who is 6 to 11 years old. Adult price is applied to 12 years old and up.
5 year old or younger child is free. But when you take Limited Express train, all seats are reserved. You have to share your seat with your child. If you want to have a seat for your child, please purchase child pass for even 5 years old or younger child.
The pass must be used in consecutive days. The validity of a rail pass starts from 12 O’clock at night.
e.g.
If you start to use 5 days pass on May 1, the pass is expired at 23:59 on May 5.
Sales location
If you want to purchase an exchange order before you leave, you can find the authorized travel agent list at the link below:
Kintetsu Rail Pass official site
They may ship the exchange order to you by mail. Please contact the nearest vendor. Kintetsu Rail Pass Wide can be purchased at both Chubu airport and Kansai airport. But Kintetsu Rail Pass can be purchased at Kansai airport only. You can find the sales location in the airport at the link above as well.
Coverage area and valid transportation
Both Kintetsu Rail Pass and Kintetsu Rail Pass Wide covers all part of Kintetsu Railway network and include three limited express vouchers.
Kintetsu Rail Pass does not include limited express voucher. The separate ticket for taking limited express train is required.
Some of Kintetsu Railway Limited Express trains have upper class seat. But this pass covers ordinary reserved seat only. And Kintetsu Railway operates Sightseeing Limited Express “Shimakaze”. This train is not covered by this pass either.
If you do not want to pay any extra, you can take rapid express, express, semi express and local trains. These are commute trains. The interior is totally different from the limited express train.
When you take a train among Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, you can use these trains because of the short distance transfer.
Compare the pass and single fare
I would like to show you the fare table. Upper fare is base fare and lower is limited express surcharge.
station | Osaka (Namba) | Kyoto | Nara | Nagoya | Ise (Toba) |
Osaka (Namba) | – | 940 900 | 560 510 | 2360 1900 | 2040 1610 |
Kyoto | 940 900 | – | 620 510 | 2590 1900 | 2280 1610 |
Nara | 560 510 | 620 510 | – | 2250 1610 | 1940 1610 |
Nagoya | 2360 1900 | 2590 1900 | 2250 1610 | – | 1710 1320 |
Ise (Toba) | 2040 1610 | 2280 1610 | 1940 1610 | 1710 1320 | – |
station | Osaka (Osaka-Abenobashi) | Kyoto | Nara | Nagoya |
Yoshino | 970 510 | 1230 900 | 850 900 | 2390 2120 |
If you travel from Nagoya to Osaka or Kyoto by limited express by 30th of September, it is higher than Kintetsu Rail Pass at 3800 yen. It is really good deal for the traveller who wants to travel from Nagoya to Kyoto or Osaka. If you go to Ise from Kyoto, Osaka or Nara, it is better deal than single fare too. But if you visit Ise, Kintetsu Rail Pass Wide may be better deal for you. Please see next chapter.
If you travel after 1st of October, limited express voucher will not be included. You must have at least one round trip between Kansai area (Osaka, Nara and Kyoto) and Nagoya or Ise.
Compare cost and trip time between the Shinkansen fare and Kintetsu Rail Pass
Shinkansen is most common way to get Kyoto and Osaka from Nagoya. It is much faster than Kintetsu Railway Limited Express trains. But Shinkansen is much more expensive too. Before you decide to go for Kintetsu Rail Pass, you should compare these trains by cost and time.
Nagoya – Namba
Trains | Trip time | Fare |
Kintetsu Railway Limited Express | 2 hrs 30 mins | 3800 yen + Limited express surcharge |
Shinkansen (Nozomi) and Subway | 1 hr 20 mins | 6840 yen |
Shinkansen and subway combination is much faster but the cost is almost double. And Kintetsu Railway is direct access without any transfer. This is the strongest point.
Nagoya – Osaka (Umeda)
Trains | Trip time | Fare |
Kintetsu Railway Limited Express and JR local train | 2 hrs 45 mins | 3800 yen + Limited express surcharge + 180 yen (JR) |
Shinkansen (Nozomi) and JR local train | 1 hr 10 mins | 6560 yen |
You have to transfer at Shin-Osaka to get Osaka by the Shinkansen. But it is same station and very easy to transfer from the Shinkansen to JR local train. If you take Kintetsu Railway, you can transfer at Tsuruhashi to JR Osaka Kanjo line. It is much easier than transfer at Namba to subway. Tsuruhashi station is much smaller than Namba. JR and Kintetsu stations are connected directly.
Nagoya – Shin-Osaka
Trains | Trip time | Fare |
Kintetsu Railway Limited Express and Subway | 3 hrs | 3800 yen + Limited express surcharge + 280 yen (subway) |
Shinkansen (Nozomi) | 50 mins | 6560 yen |
Shin-Osaka is Shinkansen’s terminal station. Shinkansen is much more accessible than Kintetsu Railway. If you take Kintetsu Railway, you have to transfer at Namba to get subway. And subway fare is extra.
Nagoya – Kyoto
Trains | Trip time | Fare |
Kintetsu Railway Limited Express Need to transfer at Yamato-Yagi | 2 hrs 35 mins | 3800 yen + Limited express surcharge |
Shinkansen (Nozomi) | 36 mins | 5800 yen |
Both Kintetsu Railway and Shinkansen are direct access to Kyoto. Shinkansen is 2 hours faster than Kintetsu Railway Limited Express.
Nagoya – Nara
Trains | Trip time | Fare |
Kintetsu Railway Limited Express and Kintetsu local train Need to transfer at Yamato-Yagi | 2 hrs 15 mins | 3800 yen + Limited express surcharge |
Shinkansen (Nozomi) JR local train | 1 hr 30 mins | 6560 yen |
Shinkansen and JR trains are still faster than Kintetsu Railway. But the difference is smallest in all above cases.
Assessment
If you are really sensitive with cost, Kintetsu Rail Pass is a good choice for even Nagoya to Osaka or reverse one way trip. If you travel from Nagoya to Osaka and visit Nara and Kyoto, this pass gives you a huge savings.
Even though the Shinkansen is much faster, this pass is one of my most recommended deals.
Comments
Hi Takeshi,
Please advise which pass is suitable. I’m going to Nagoya in end of December and planning to visit as following:-
1. Arrive in Nagoya Airport
2. Nagoya > Takayama > Shirakawa-go > Kanazawa > Nagoya (one day trip)
3. Nagoya > Osaka (Namba Station)
3. Osaka > Kobe
4. Departure Osaka (Kansai airport)
Thank You
Hi Iris,
Actually there is no suitable deals for your trip unfortunately. Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass may be considerable for Nagoya > Takayama > Shirakawa-go > Kanazawa > Nagoya (one day trip).
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/takayama-hokuriku-area-pass-perfect-deal-to-get-takayama-kanazawa-toyama-shirakawago-from-nagoya-or-osaka.html
But this pass does not cover direct train to Nagoya from Kanazawa. If you go to Osaka from Kanazawa, this pass is recommended but if you keep this itinerary, single fare is your chocie.
For other part of the trip, there is no deals either. Only city deals in Osaka and some deals to Kansai airport is available.

Hi Iris,
I think it’s a very big stretch to try to cover Nagoya > Takayama > Shirakawa-go > Kanazawa > Nagoya all in a 1 day trip. You’ll end up just traveling on trains and buses and won’t get to see or do anything much at each place (except views from train/bus).
I did that route last Nov on a 5 days trip using the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (5 days pass JPY13,500), staying 2 nights in Takayama and 2 nights in Kanazawa. Shirakawa-go was done in a day trip by buses from Takayama and ending up at Kanawaza. I still think it’s too short a trip and wished they have a 7 days pass.
Fyi, the express train trips from Nagoya to Takayama is over 2 hrs, Kanazawa to Nagoya is over 3hrs, and bus to and from Shirakawa-go is about an hour each way. That’s almost 9 hours of traveling on a day where the sun sets early.
There’s a lot to see, do and eat in all 3 places. So don’t waste a trip there by cramming everything into 1 day.
Cheers,
Hi Iris,
This may be a better pass for you – Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass. Covers most of the places you want and you can even take in Kyoto. Just doesn’t cover Kobe though, but it doesn’t cost much to get to Kobe from Osaka.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/takayama-hokuriku-area-pass-perfect-deal-to-get-takayama-kanazawa-toyama-shirakawago-from-nagoya-or-osaka.html
Hi!
I’m going to Japan from Nov 8-15. Our plan is to cover Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. We will arrive in Nagoya on the 8th and leave Tokyo on the 15th. Can you please recommend the best route/order of travel between these cities and what mode of transportation to use.
Thank you very much!
Hi Bebs,
You can visit Osaka/Kyoto first and then move to Tokyo. It doesn’t matter which one you visit first, Osaka or Kyoto.
There is no deals to cover all part of your trip. Kintetsu rail pass is one of the deal to consider. You can use Kintetsu rail pass to get Osaka and Kyoto. If you use this pass, I recommend you to add limited express fee to take limited express train. If you don’t, you still can get there, but you have to change trains several times and not recommended for overseas tourist. Kintetsu rail pass Nagoya-Osaka/Kyoto-Nagoya but it does not cover Nagoya to Tokyo. Only single ticket is your choice.
If you make your trip be easier, just purchase a single ticket to take Shinkansen. It is the fastest way to travel:
https://jprail.com/trains/sort-by-departure-arrival-stations/stations-in-tokai/nagoya-toyohashi/what-is-shinkansen-bullet-train.html
You can find the single fare at Hyperdia:

https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/for-non-jr-pass-travellers-guide-to-use-jr-single-ticket-basic-rules-validity-and-stopover.html
You can add local deals, like subway pass in each cities. Even if you use Kintetsu rail pass, you need to add local deals because Kintetsu rail pass can take you Kyoto and Osaka but it does not cover local transportation. You can find local deals at the links below:

Hi
My friend and i will arrive at chubu airport and will stay from nov 23 to 29. What pass can you recommend to us as we want to travel nagoya osaka kyoto and nara. First time travelling to japan. Thanks!
Hi Marj,
Most economical choice is Kintetsu Rail Pass. There is no other deals available to cover the cities where you want to go. You may find more info at the link below:
http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/ticket/krp.html
But if you stay in Osaka or Kyoto after arriving Nagoya, and you will make a day trips to Nara, Osaka and/or Kyoto, you may take Shinkansen (bullet train) between Nagoya and Osaka/Kyoto and use local deals. In this case, you have to purchase single ticket for Shinkansen. Local deals are available in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. You can find the fare and timetable at Hyperdia. All info can be found at the links below:

Hi Takeshi,
I will be in nagoya on Oct. 6 -9 for the F1 suzuka grand prix. Then will travel to Osaka after the race and will fly out in Kansai on Oct. 14. What rail pass can you recommend that I can use for both my daily commute to Suzuka for 3 days and also for going to Osaka.
Thanks for your help.
Hi Carlo,
Kintetsu rail pass is the best choice. You can get Shiroko station from Nagoya by Kintetsu railway. You also catch the train from Shiroko to Osaka-Namba by Kintetsu railway.
http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/about/station/route_map/index.html
But when you go to Osaka from Shiroko, you have to change the trains several times. And also train will be so busy.

Hi Takeshi,
I plan to visit Japan on springtime next year. I plan to arrive at KIX airport and stay in Osaka for 2 nights, then proceed to Kyoto and stay there for 2 nights, then go home via Nagoya airport. I will bring my family with me (with 2 kids) so I will be travelling with big luggages.
What is d most convinient pass for us?
Your advise will b most appreciated.
Thanks,
Mictan
Hi Mictan,
Please see the link below. You will use same idea in this sample from day 1 to 4.
Kintetsu Rail Pass is not recommended for you. Because there is no direct trains from Kyoto to Nagoya. I recommend you to purchase regular ticket for taking Shinkansen (bullet train) from Kyoto to Nagoya. And then transfer to Meitetsu railway to Nagoya airport.

Hi Takeshi,
I understand Kintetsu Rail Pass Wide will be hanged to Kintetsu Pass PLUS effective October 1.
We will arrive Chubu Airport on Sept 29 and plan to buy Kintetsu Rail pass wide for 5 days.
Does it mean this will no longer be honored by October 1? Thank you
Hi Eileen,
I believe current version of Kintetsu pass will be sold until end of September. Because new one will be available on October 1.
But I’m not 100% sure.

Thank you!
No worries, Eileen.

Hi, I will travel to Japan on winter around 15 days, can you give me the comfort way to visit huis ten bosch, Osaka, kyoto, nara, nagoya and sapporo, for the first 5 day can I take kintetsu?
I will travelling with my 6years old son, my friend and her small family too.
Thank you I advance
Hi Indri,
Sapporo and Huis Ten Bosch are so far from Osaka/Nagoya/Kyoto.
If you go to Sapporo from Nagoya, it will be one full day trip. Please see the link below:
https://jprail.com/destinations/hokkaido-area/how-to-get-sapporo.html
It shows trip from Tokyo. You have to add two more hours from Nagoya, 3 more hours from Osaka/Kyoto. I don’t think you can take this trip. Please think about dropping by other places on the way to Sapporo, such as Tokyo, Hakodate.
Meanwhile Huis Ten Bosch is not very closed. You have to take Shinkansen (bullet train) to Hakata from Shin-Osaka or Kyoto. It takes 3 hours and 4 hours from Nagoya. And then you have to take other limited express train fro two hours.
If you visit all places by trains, your choice is JR Pass.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/japan-rail-pass-user-guide-how-to-use-jr-pass-to-its-maximum.html
It covers all part of Japan. You don’t need to have Kintetsu rail pass. But if you are not comfortable to take a train for many hours, you should take domestic flight. Flight fare is not fixed. I cannot compare the price. But JR Pass is cheaper, I think.
You can find the timetable at the links below. You may know how many hours you need to take in these trips from these timetables.

I will be in Osaka for 5 nights with my husband and daughter.
I am planning to visit certain places in the city of Osaka, Kyoto, Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Can you advise me on :
1. how to go about taking the train and will it be costly?
2. will driving from kyoto to Takayama/Shirakawa-go be more cost effective?
Hi Wong,
You may use Takayama Hokuriku Area pass. This is most affordable choice.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/takayama-hokuriku-area-pass-perfect-deal-to-get-takayama-kanazawa-toyama-shirakawago-from-nagoya-or-osaka.html
This pass does not cover city transit, like subway and city bus in Osaka and Kyoto. You may need to add city deals.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/how-to-choose-discount-railway-ticket-and-pass-in-kansai-area.html#Kyoto_area
I have no idea about rent a car, so I cannot compare.

Hi Takeshi san,
What is the best and cheapest route/pass from Chubu Airport going to Osaka? Then going around Osaka and Kyoto, and Osaka to Tokyo. Thanks!
Hi Jeny san,
You have to get Nagoya station first anyway.
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/airport-access/chubu-ngo/chubu-nagoya-airport-transportation-guide-find-info-about-airport-station-and-access-to-nagoya.html
And then, you can take either Kintetsu railway or Shinkansen (bullet train). Kintetsu is cheaper but Shinkansen is faster. You can use Kintesu rail pass if you take Kintetsu. If you take Shinkansen, single ticket is only choice. Please see the link below to find the fare and timetable:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/hyperdia-perfect-guide-train-timetable-and-route-search-engine.html
In Osaka and Kyoto, there are several deals available. Please see the links below:

https://jprail.com/travel-informations/tips-for-japan-rail-pass/how-to-transfer-among-kyoto-osaka-and-kobe-compare-japan-railway-and-private-lines.html
There is no deals available again for Osaka to Tokyo. Shinkansen is most common way.

Many thanks Takeshi San!
This is very helpful, my worry is we will be arriving 8.25 in the evening? can we still purchase tickets at the Central Japan Travel Center like after 9pm? Just in case our flight will be delayed, are there places where we can buy train ticket going to Osaka? Many thanks again!
Hi Jeny,
Central Japan Travel Center is open until 22:00.
http://www.centrair.jp/en/travelplaza/
But you don’t need to worry about purchasing a ticket from Nagoya to Osaka. You can purchase it at Nagoya station just before taking a train.
If you intend to go to Osaka on arrival day, it may be tough. Please see the those following links:
Meitetsu railway (airport to Nagoya)
http://www.meitetsu.co.jp/eng/timetable/centrair/timetable/access_e05_01.html
Shinkansen (bullet train, Nagoya to Shin-Osaka)
http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/_pdf/westbound.pdf
As you see the timetable of Shinkansen, the last trip to Shin-Osaka depart from Nagoya at 22:58. You will spend at least 30 minutes from airport to Nagoya. And also you have to think about the time to change the trains at Nagoya station and spending the time to clear custom and immigration. Please read the links below about airport and Nagoya station:
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/airport-access/chubu-ngo/chubu-nagoya-airport-transportation-guide-find-info-about-airport-station-and-access-to-nagoya.html
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/station-information/nagoya-station-guide-how-to-transfer-among-shinkansen-kintetsu-meitetsu-subway-and-jr-local-trains.html
Actually I have never arrived by international flight at Central Japan airport. But you have to expect to spend one hour to clear custom and immigration. If everything goes smoothly, I think you can be Nagoya station around 22:00. You still have one hour to the last train. One hour is enough to buy a ticket and changing the trains. But if something happens, it may be very tight. Remember 22:58 is the last train to Osaka. There is no way to get Osaka after 22:58 train. If you worry about it and is stressful, I recommend you to stay in Nagoya and travel to Osaka on next day.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi! Can i purchase kintetsu 1 day pass or 2 day pass at the kansai aiport?
Also, can i use this passes from osaka , stop to kyoto and then to NAGOYA?
If so, how much for the price for 1 day pass as well as 2 day pass per adult.
Also, i want to purchase the passes on 1st september since that is my arrival BUT I am only going to use on 4th sept since that will be my schedule to kyoto to nagoya. Is that possible?
Pls answer me step by step for my clarification.
Thank you dear!!
Hi Jane,
You need 5 days Kintetsu rail pass. 1 or 2 days pass covers Osaka, Kyoto and Nara only. Nagoya is not in coverage area. Please see the link below:
http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/ticket/krp.html
You can purchase it at Kansai airport tourist info center. Please refer the following link:
http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/ticket/get.html
You can choose the date when you want to start using. So you can purchase it on 1st and start to use on 4th.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi! Its me again. So, 5 days WIDE passes are unlimited (3,800yen) covered osaka to kyoto and nagoya can be used for. So i guess i can start using on the day of my arrival yeah? Also, in this 5 days passes WIDE, it can be use from kansai airport using nankai line to osaka? I am correct?
Also, in my 3 days stay in OSAKA, i will go osaka castle, tempozan ferriz wheel, osaka museum house and living, ded den town nopponbashi. Those places mention, can i used the passes too?
Pls advice me, it is very complicated since osaka has too much lines.
On above places, may i know your affliated lines that i can accest my destination?
Your prompt reply is highly appreciated.
Cheers!
Hi Jane,
You can get Kyoto and Nara by this pass. But it does not cover any local transportation, such as subway and city bus. So actually this pass is not very useful in Osaka and Kyoto. In Nara, most places can be accessed by walk from Kintetsu Nara station. In Osaka and Kyoto, you need to add subway pass or single fare.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/how-to-choose-discount-railway-ticket-and-pass-in-kansai-area.html
You don’t need to purchase “Wide” because single fare (920 yen for one way) + regular pass is cheaper.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi! How much will be the fare from osaka to nagoya 1 way ticket? is it 920 yen?
How about from kyoto to nagoya ?
Thanks!
Hi Jane,
Please see the post above. You can find the base fare and express surcharge.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi! I am Michelle. I need your advise. I will be arrived in Kansai Central Airport (KIX) in Osaka on September 20th at 9 AM. I need to be arrived in Nagoya Station and I am bringing heavy luggage (around 40kgs). Which train will be most convenient to use?
Thanks for your help.
Hi Michelle,
I recommend you to take the following trains:
Limited express Haruka (Kansai airport to Shin-Osaka)

Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka to Nagoya)

If you use Kintetsu rail pass to take Kintetsu railway, it’s cheaper. But you have to change the trains at Namba. You need to go through underground path with heavy luggage. That is very tough.
If you take Haruka and Shinkansen, you can change the trains at same station. You don’t need to exit station. That is much easier. But there is no deals to cover this route. You may use Haruka discount ticket to get Shin-Osaka.
