Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko are limited express trains to Izukyu-Shimoda or Shuzenji in Izu peninsula from Tokyo and Shinjuku. As probably you know, Izu peninsula is one of most famous hot springs resort area in Japan. These express trains take you to many places, such as Atami, Ito, Kwazu and Izu-Kogen, in Izu hot springs resort from Greater Tokyo area.
Saphir Odoriko was introduced on March 14th, 2020. This train offers high-end train service. This train does not have any ordinary class seat. All seats are Green seat (business class) or Premium Green seat (first class).
In this post, I will show you the interior, timetable, trip times and other trips of Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko.
Route, timetable and trip time
Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko connects Tokyo and Atami in 1 hour 30 minutes and connects Tokyo and Izukyu-Shimoda in 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours and conencts Tokyo and Shuzenji in 2 hours 10 minutes.
Please find the timetable in JR East official website (English):
JR East official site – the timetable
Restriction for JR Pass users
These trains are operated on both JR line and the private lines, Izu Kyuko Railway (Ito to Izukyu-Shimoda) and Izu Hakone Railways (Mishima to Shuzenji). If you take these train by JR Pass, JR Pass does not cover these private lines. You may have to pay the extra if you travel farther than Ito or Mishima.
Please see the fare table below to find the extra on top of JR Pass.
Extra fare table for Izu-Kyuko line

If you use JR East Pass or Tokyo Wide Pass, Izu-Kyuko line is covered. You can take an ordinary seat on the limited express Odoriko without any extra charge. But Saphir Odoriko is not covered at all by these passes because this train offers only Green class seat and Premium Green class seat. These passes do not cover Green and Premium Green seats. And these passes do not cover farther than Atami. The segment between Atami and Shuzenji is not covered at all by these passes.
Accommodation
Odoriko is operated by 185 series and 257 series. All 185 series will be replaces by 257 series sooner or later because this fleet is one of the oldest fleets in JR trains.
Saphir Odoriko is operated by 261 series. 261 series is designed for Saphir Odoriko and newly itroduced.
As I mentioned, Saphir Odiriko 261 series does not offer any ordinary class seats. It offers only Green class seat and Premium Green class seat.

Hi Takeshi -san,
Just to confirm that JR Tohoku pass is valid for both odoriko and super view odoriko between atami and shimoda , right?
Are they both for reserved seat only or there are unreserved seats available?
What side of the cart would you recommend when traveling from ATAMI to Izukyu Shimoda?
Thank you so much
Hi Joe san,
It is covered and both trains have both reserved and non reserved.
A and B are oceanside and recommended.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
thank you so much Takeshi san
Hi,
I need to get to JR Shuzenji station from Tokyo on the 5th of April. Do you mind telling me the best way to get there, including from which station in Tokyo to take the train from, as I am getting confused with all the different services you offer. I have the JR Pass, do I need to pay extra?
Thank you very much for your help and kindness!
Arnie
Hi Arnie,
Limited Express Odoriko takes you from Tokyo to Shuzenji directly as you probably saw the post above. You can find the timetable in the link below:
http://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/english/wb/common/timetable/e_lex_tokaido_d/index.html
This train goes to Shuzenji directly but Shuzenji is not JR station. You have to pay for Mishima to Shuzenji. Please see the post above to get the extra fare for this segment.
If you cannot take the limited express Odoriko, you can take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Mishima and then take a local train from Mishima to Shuzenji. You can find the timetable in hyperdia:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/hyperdia-perfect-guide-train-timetable-and-route-search-engine.html
JR pass covers Shinkansen trip from Tokyo to Mishima. And you have to pay for Mishima to Shuzenji.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Dear Takeshi,
THANK YOU so very much for the detailed explanation! You are a life saver ❤️❤️❤️❤️Our trip to Japan will be smoother now!

Hi, my name is Sari.
May i know how to go to Shirakawa Go from Tokyo? Is that possible for 1 day only?
Tokyo – Shirakawa Go – Tokyo
and which one was cover by JR PASS .
I’m going on 7 march, is the snow still there usually?
And for Kawazu, I’m planning to go on 6 march, is the sakura still there also?
Much thank you.
Hi Sari,

Hello again Takeshi-san
It’s mentioned above that Japan Rail Pass User will pay the same price for Super View Odoriko and Exp Odoriko, does that mean only the fare or including the reserved seat as well?
I’m in frustation deciding the most efficient way to travel from KAWAZU to Yokohama and to the accomodation in Tokyo, other than spending bucks for Super View Odoriko.
I have searched trains departing kawazu-Shin-Yokohama-Shinjuku or Kawazu-Yokohama-Shinjuku, seemed like I still need to board either Odoriko or Nozomi.
is there anyway to make the journey more efficient, as I have spent money for Japan Rail Pass and Superview Odoriko from Atami to Kawazu. Does the view worth 6000¥ to travel from KAwazu to Yokohama?
thank you so much!
Warm Regards
Corry
Hi Corry san,
JR pass covers both Odoriko and Super View Odoriko. You have to pay for non JR segment which is Ito to/from Kawazu. This is Izukyu railway segment and it’s not covered by JR Pass. You don’t need to pay for both base fare and reserved seat fee of either Odoriko and Super View Odoriko between Ito and Tokyo/Yokohama. If you take Shinkansen between Atami and Tokyo or Shin-Yokohama, you can take either Hikari or Kodama. Nozomi is not covered by JR pass and Nozomi does not stop at Atami.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi-san
Thank you for prompt reply. I didn’t know that super view Odoriko is covered by Japan Rail Pass. Thats a really good news. So just to confirm, my trip from Kawazu to Yokohama with Super View Odoriko is covered everything by JR Pass?
Many many thanks Takeshi San!
Warm Regards
Corry
Hi Corry,
No. You have to pay for Kawazu to Ito which is not JR as I mentioned. Please see the extra faretable in the post above.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
I want to know which months are the peak season for Odoriko/Super Odoriko which are fully operated.
Which train I should take from Kawasu to Shinjuku during the non peak season when Odoriko/Super Odoriko is not available?
Hi Betty,
Please see the timetables in the link below. You can find all Odoriko/Super View Odoriko schedule until March, 2019. The timetable after April has not been released yet. It will come up in late January.

If you cannot take Odoriko, you can take a local train or Shinkansen between Atami and Tokyo. And you can take a local train between Kawazu and Atami, Tokyo and Shinjuku.

Hi Takeshi san,
I need to travel from Osaka to Izukogen.
Please advise the best route by train.
Also, would JR Pass cover part of the route?
Regards,
Beng
Hi Beng san,
JR pass covers until you reach Ito on the way to Izukogen. Please see the link below:

Hi,
I will travel from Tokyo to Kawazu using JR 7 days pass. When I checked from Hyperdia, there’s 2 choice:
Tokyo to Atami by Shinkansen Kodama -> Atami to Ito by JR Ito Line -> Ito to Kawazu by Izu Kyuko Line.
OR
Tokyo to Kawazu by Ltd Exp Odoriko
My question is how much do I need to pay the difference and where should I make the payment?
Thank you in advance..
Hi Tyusni,
If you take Izu Kyuko line, you need to pay only base fare for Ito to Kawazu. If you take Odoriko, you need to pay base fare and limited express surcharge for Ito to Kawazu. You can find the amount in the post above.
If you take Odoriko, you can pay this extra charge when you book a seat for Odoriko at the ticket window. If you take Izu Kyuko line from Ito, you can pay in Izu Kyuko train or when you exit at Kawazu station.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi takeshi,
Thanks for the reply.
I’ll go with the 1st choice since it’s cheaper. Instead paying with cash, can I tap my IC card specifically Kitaca card at Kawazu station when I reach there?
Hi Tyusni,
You can use Kitaca. But you have to exit at Ito station and then enter again by Kitaca.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
I am planning to take the train from Kawazu to Kamakura and Enoshima with JR Pass. Based on information from Hyperdia, there are 2 option with one hour time difference :
1. Kawazu – Ofuna – Kamakura (120 minutes with limited express Odoriko and JR Yokusuka Line for 2690 yen)
2. Kawazu – Ito – Atami – Odawara – Ofuna – Kamakura (180 minutes with Izu Kyukyo Line + JR Line)
Do you have any recommendation for JR Pass user which one to take?
Do I have to pay full price 2690 yen for option 1 to use limited express Odoriko or how much extra fare I have to pay if I have JR Pass?
I know that there is Kamakura Enoshima one day pass from Shinjuku for 1470 yen, but I can’t use that because I want to see Enoshima illumination in Feb 18th 2018 (last day of illumination) and fortunately my JR Pass still active on that date.
Thank you so much in advance Takeshi.
Your blog and your answer really help me to plan my trip to Japan 🙂
Best regards,
Caroline
Hi Caroline
Please see the chapter of “Extra fare table for Izu-Kyuko line” in the post above. That’s you need to pay on top of JR Pass. JR Pass does not cover Izu Kyuko segment. Other part of the trip is covered by JR pass. JR pass covers limited express fee too. So option 1 is better choice for JR pass user.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
I will be using JR East Pass Nagano Niigata area.
1) What train should I take from Tokyo to Odawara using this pass?
2) It seems that Super View Odoriko from Tokyo to Odawara is possible but I cannot find this train at HyperDia website to travel on 12 Feb morning. Pls advise how I can see the train timing of this train on that day.
3) If I can take other train to Odawara using this pass, pls advise. Thank you.
Hi SeoGek tan,
1,3. Odoriko, Super View Odoriko or ordinary/rapid train

2. Please see the link below. It’s JR East official timetable.

Hi
I wish to travel from Tokyo to Shuzenji
I saw from the timetable there is a schedule:9am leaving from Tokyo to Shuzenji by Odoriko 105
I will be holding JR east pass (Tohuku area) can I use this pass for travelling
Besides I wish to make an online reservation of seats on 7/12/2017
But I can’t find such route
Please give me advice
Thanks
Wendy lo
Hi Wendy,
Unfortunately you cannot reserve your seat online because Shuzenji is not covered by JR East Pass. You need to pay extra fare for Atami-Shuzenji which is not covered by JR East Pass.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/tips-for-japan-rail-pass/how-to-access-to-atami-ito-shimoda-and-other-places-in-izu-peninsula-by-railways.html
You may find the extra fare for Atami to Shuzenji at hyperdia:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/hyperdia-perfect-guide-train-timetable-and-route-search-engine.html
You have to book it after you arrive in Japan. But your trip date is not a busy day. It’s not hard to book it even if you book after arrival.
