Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko are limited express trains to Izukyu-Shimoda or Shuzenji in Izu peninsula from Tokyo and Shinjuku. As probably you know, Izu peninsula is one of most famous hot springs resort area in Japan. These express trains take you to many places, such as Atami, Ito, Kwazu and Izu-Kogen, in Izu hot springs resort from Greater Tokyo area.
Saphir Odoriko was introduced on March 14th, 2020. This train offers high-end train service. This train does not have any ordinary class seat. All seats are Green seat (business class) or Premium Green seat (first class).
In this post, I will show you the interior, timetable, trip times and other trips of Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko.
Route, timetable and trip time

Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko connects Tokyo and Atami in 1 hour 30 minutes and connects Tokyo and Izukyu-Shimoda in 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours and conencts Tokyo and Shuzenji in 2 hours 10 minutes.

These trains are operated on both JR line and the private lines, Izu Kyuko Railway (Ito to Izukyu-Shimoda) and Izu Hakone Railways (Mishima to Shuzenji). If you take these train by JR Pass, JR Pass does not cover these private lines. You may have to pay the extra if you travel farther than Ito or Mishima.
Please see the fare table below to find the extra on top of JR Pass.

And these passes do not cover farther than Atami. The segment between Atami and Shuzenji is not covered at all by these passes.
Accommodation
Odoriko is operated by 185 series and 257 series. All 185 series will be replaces by 257 series sooner or later because this fleet is one of the oldest fleets in JR trains.
Saphir Odoriko is operated by 261 series. 261 series is designed for Saphir Odoriko and newly itroduced.
As I mentioned, Saphir Odiriko 261 series does not offer any ordinary class seats. It offers only Green class seat and Premium Green class seat.

Hi SIr,
Please help me – please give me direct train on Saturday and Sunday (April 15/ 2017 or April 16/2017 – One day trip from Shinjuku) departure from Shinjuku Station directly to Izukyu Shimoda via Super View Odoriko are limited express trains to Izukyu-Shimoda (伊豆急下田) timing on Saturday and Sunday.
Also returning on Saturday and Sunday Afternoon timing from 3pm – 4pm directly from Izukyu Shimoda to Shinjuku or Tokyo directly without any transfer in between station. Please give me the timing. I could not understand the timetable and how to select the timing and shown operation date * with _ icon that does not know the meaning – it meant every day, daily or only certain date – do not know April 2017 is it a peak season in Japan.
Your guidance will be greatly appreciated and thankful.
Cheers:)
Jun
Hi Jun,
Operation date is shown in Green shade but I think you could not find any dates in April. Actually April timetable is not available yet.
You will find it at same links in the previous reply later. April schedule will come up sometimes in next February or March.
Mid April is not a peak season but it will be cherry blossom season. These dates have been getting popular in these days. It’s very hard to say how busy it will be.
Cheers,

Hi Takeshi san
Is JR Wide Tokyo Area Pass (3-Day pass) cover SHINKANSEN KODAMA 666 travel to Izukyu Shimoda from Tokyo and return trip from Izukyu Shimoda to Tokyo. Your advice will be greatly appreciated Thank you in advance.
Happy New Year and Happy 2017
Hi Jun san,
Unfortunately you cannot any Shinkansen trains between Tokyo and Atami by this pass. You have to take ordinary train or Limited Express Odoriko.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Dear Sir
Sorry to trouble you again, I have question to seek your help:)
Can I buy 2 Japan Tokyo Wide Pass (3 Days) for travelling on April 14 – 16 and another on April 17 – 19. All are different destination. Can I use the Pass to go to Hitachi Seaside Park and Ashigaka Flower Park. Also can it use to travel to Ushiku Big Buddha (Ushiku Station)
Please advise me.
Thank you.
Hi June,
Yes, you may. But do you really need 6 consecutive days coverage?
JR East Pass Nagano Niigata is sold at 18,000 yen. It offers only 5 days coverage but you can pick any 5 days in 14 days period. You don’t need to use it in consecutive days.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/jr-east-pass-niigata-and-nagano-flex-5-days-pass-in-14-days-period-to-cover-kanto-region-nagano-and-niigata.html
JR East Pass covers all part of the coverage area of Tokyo Wide Pass, actually covers more than Tokyo Wide Pass.
Both Tokyo Wide Pass and JR East Pass Nagano Niigata covers all locations where you want to go. But you need to pay for the bus for Katsuta – Hitachi Seaside Park and Ushiku – Ushiku Buddha.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you:)
We just returning from Izukyu Shimoda, fun and interesting outing.
No worries, Jun.

Hi Sir
Can ask question as am confused – Does JR Tokyo Wide Pass covers to Shuzenji Station directly from Shinjuku Station and also from Tokyo Station.
As from Atami Station to Mishima Station – All JR passes not covered. Or any train that goes to Shuzenji cover by which JR passes, please guide me, many thanks:)
Jun
Hi Jun,
Tokyo wide pass does not cover Atami-Shuzenji segment as you guess. JR Pass covers Atami-Mishima segment but you still need to pay extra for Mishima-Shuzenji. And also JR pass is much more expensive than Tokyo wide pass.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/japan-rail-pass-user-guide-how-to-use-jr-pass-to-its-maximum.html
There is no deals to cover whole part of trip from Shinjuku or Tokyo to Shuzenji.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail
Hi Takeshi san
Any extra ticket required to pay for joyful train – IZU CRAILE – as I had Tokyo Wide Pass (3 Days).
Thank you in advance.
Jun
Hi Jun san,
You need to pay Green seat fee 770 yen (Odawara – Ito or Atami) or 1280 yen (other segments) because this train has only green seat. By the way, you can take only car#4 of this train. Other cars are sold as tour product. Tokyo Wide Pass does not cover and you need to purchase the tour product in JR East View travel.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi San,
I’m confused with the trains that I can and cannot take with my flexible 5 days JR EAST Pass (Nagano Niigata area). Can you please advise? My routes are as following
1st Day: Tokyo Station – Nagano Station
2nd Day: Nagano Station – Matsumoto Station and then Matsumoto Station – Shinjuku Station
3rd Day: Tokyo – Yokohama
4th Day: Tokyo – Hakone (Day trip)
The 4th Day to Hakone is the one I’m confused the most. I’m not sure which train to Hakone that my JR East Pass is covered.
Thank you.
Regards,
Tracy Ng
Hi Tracy san,
As you noticed, day 1 to 3 are okay. Those trips are covered by this pass fully. On day 4, you can get Odawara but you cannot take Shinkansen. You have to take Odoriko, Super View Odoriko or rapid train. rapid train. You can find the info about rapid train at the link below:
https://jprail.com/trains/sort-by-type/rapid-service/rapid-train-on-tokaido-line.html
After Odawara, this pass does not cover any transportation. Hakone Free Pass is recommended.

Dear Takeshi-san,
which rail pass should we get?
– We will arrive in Haneda on July 21st.
– Stay in Tokyo (Ginza) and travel within the metropolitan area from July 21st to July 26.
– 2 day trip from Tokyo to Izu-Nagaoka (July 26, 27) and back
– Stay in Tokyo and travel within the metropolitan area from July 28th to July 30th
– Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto on July 31st and return to Haneda on August 4th
Kind regards, Helmut
Hi Helmut san,
Do you really need to go to Izu on 26 and 27? Because you can use JR pass for the trip to Kyoto from Tokyo. If you use 7 days pass in the last 7 days of your trip, you can squeeze trip to Izu just before going to Kyoto. And you can use 7 days JR pass for both trips.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/japan-rail-pass-user-guide-how-to-use-jr-pass-to-its-maximum.html
If you can’t, you may need to add round trip single fare to Izu-Nagaoka from Tokyo. JR pass 7 days is recommended for the last 7 days of your trip anyway even if you cannot include trip to Izu.
In Tokyo, you can use Tokyo subway deals. Please see the link below:

In tokyo
Hi Takeshi san,
I am planning to go from Haneda to Shimoda, then to Ito, Yokohama and back to Tokyo and maybe Niigata.
I read that the JR East Nagano Niigata Area pass,
JR East “Izu Free Q Kippu” and Odoriko Minami Izu Free Kippu are good options.
Can I get your opinion about this?
Hi Melissa san,
If you are really sure to visit Niigata, JR East pass Nagano and Niigata area is the best choice.
Odoriko Minami Izu Free Kippu is no longer available. Izu Free Q Kippu does not include limited express surucharge. So Tokyo wide pass may be considerable.

Izu Free Q Kippu is valid for only 2 days but Tokyo Wide Pass is valid for 3 days.

Dear Takeshi-san,

Hi Shing san,
Tokyo Wide Pass is the best choice.

Dear Takeshi san,
I want to book tickets from Shinagawa to Izu-inatori (and back) online for the Super View Odoriko, for end of April weekend. The booking site says I have to pick up tickets the day before, but I only arrive in Japan so late that I can not pick them up the day before.
1. Is there a way to pick up the tickets on departure day?
2. If not, could somebody else pick them up for me? If yes, are any documents needed?
3. Is it hard to get tickets without reservation on departure day?
Thanks so much!
Udo
Hi Udo san,
Unfortunately there is no way to book online.
If you don’t intend to use the pass and just purchase a ticket, you can ask some to purchase a ticket for you. Documents are not required.
The end of April is called Golden Week. It’s one of the busiest period. Please see the link below:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/2016-busiest-period-to-travel-by-train-tips-to-book-your-seat-in-even-busy-period.html

Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hello Takeshi san,
thanks for your quick reply! I thought you can do reservations though online and pick up the tickets (latest the day before the departure), right?
But do you maybe know if somebody else could pick up these reserved tickets?
Anyway, thanks for your information and blog, it is much appreciated! The Japanese train system really is complicated to outsiders ^^;;
All the best,
Udo
Hi Udo san,
I cannot do it because I don’t live in Japan. And also the credit card that you use it for booking is required when someone pick up your ticket. It’s impossible. If you don’t have any friends or relatives in Japan, you have to book it by yourself after you arrive in Japan unfortunately.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hello,
oh I didn’t mean to ask if you can make a booking! hehe… Thanks again for the information, I will look for a way to make it happen!
Thanks for good information and have a good week!
Best,
Udo
Hope you will make it, Udo san.

Hi Takeshi san,
I would like to take the fastest train to Izu-Inatori from Tokyo (from Shinjuku as I understand it). I read that there is only one train a day for this trip. At what time does this train leave from Shinjuku and from Izu-Inatori?
Many thanks, Baya
Hi Baya san,
You can find the timetable at the link below:
http://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/english/wb/common/timetable/index.html
Please look at the timetable of “Limited Express trains on the Tokaido line”.

Thank you so much for this information!
Baya
No problem, Baya.

Hi Takeshi San
Good Day! Following your previous recommendation, I will be in Kawazu from Tokyo next week, then return via the Izukyu line that terminated Ito. Would you please advise the most economical way to travel from Ito with 1 day stopover in Atami and travel to Osaka Tennoji station, then depart from Kansai airport 2 days later. I will most likely reserve the seat for the long distance travel from Atami to Osaka, is there any side of the train I should try to reserve. Many thanks!
Paul
Hi Paul san,
There is no deals available. But you can use one base fare ticket from Ito to Kansai airport with stopover at Atami, Tennoji.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/for-non-jr-pass-travellers-guide-to-use-jr-single-ticket-basic-rules-validity-and-stopover.html
If weather is good, Mt. Fuji can be seen on right side to Osaka.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Many thanks Takeshi San
I got 13490Yen (reserve ordinary) from Hyperdia to travel from Ito to Kansai (shown as 1 journey within one day) and according to the rules, I can make the following stopovers:
Mar10 Ito to Atami
Mar 11 Atami to Tennoji
Mar 13 Tennoji to Kansai
Does the fare sounds right to you and the above stopovers are OK for over 400KM and it is within 4 days.
I got a slightly different pricing if I purchase 2 tickets i.e. ITO to Tennoji and from Tennoji to Kansai.
My apologies for being a bit paranoid,
Thanks and cheers!
Paul
Hi Paul san,
Yes. This ticket is valid for 4 days and no problem to travel all down to Kansai from Ito with stopovers.
Cheers,

Hi Takeshi san,
Im planning to go kawazu from tokyo and back in the cheapest way(2 ways).Timing is not a problem.Im arriving in Haneda airport on 8th of march at 11pm and the nexy day(9th March) i will be going to kawazu at the earliest time possible.I just want to know which route will be the cheapest to buy from tokyo to kawazu,Is there any special pass i could buy at the airport ?Thank for replying for all our questions Takeshi San.(On behalf of other travellers)Its great to know people like you that helps us to know how the systems work in japan.
Hi Nathaniel san,
The cheapest way is taking local train on Tokaido line and Izu Kyuko line by just base fare ticket. It costs about 3500 yen one way and takes about 3.5 hours.
