Summer is very hot and humid in Japan. It is not the best season to travel. However summer is very busy travel season. In Japan, most public schools have summer break from July 20 to August 31. This period is busier than usual. Especially mid August is called “Obon”. This is one of the busiest season. Many of Japanese go back to hometown and spend the time with families. It is Japanese tradition. Many of trains are booked out very quickly. Please see the link below to learn more:

  1. こんにちは!たかしさん,
You’ve send me a website for checking vacancies of trains before, sorry i lost it, could I have it again please?
For your experience how full do you think of the shirakami train(しらかみ)and the SL銀河 in early Aug, i.e 2/3 Aug.
    cheers
    ありかとう

    1. Hi Joe san,

      I think it’s cyberstation.
      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/how-to-find-seat-availability-of-trains-jr-cyber-station-guide.html

You may find it for Resort Shirakami at JR East train reservation site:
      https://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/English/wb/common/Menu/Menu.aspx?_ga=1.4778995.1325107855.1421419524

      P.S.
Thank you very much for writing my name in Japanese. But it’s a bit different.
My name is Takeshi = たけし. たかし is Takashi. Both names are very common in Japan. like John, Mike.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  2. Hi Takeshi-San,

Could you please tell me how can I download the JR train reservation application form?
I’ve seen a copy sample from JR Kyushu, I ‘ve tried to serch the net for downloading but without any sucess.
    Thanks a lot
    Cheers

  3. Hi Takeshi-San,
Some inquiries of the tohoko shinkansens , as they seen to be a bit different with the rest in japan.

Are hayabusa and komachi have reserved seats only? Enen If I have jp pass but not making reservation for those train , I can’t make it, right?

If that’s the case what other trains have the same situations as above? (I know the special train such as shirakami and SL Gina have reserved seats only)

    Cheers

          1. Hi Takeshi-San, thanks for the reply.
If those shinkansen seats are booked out, am I able to get a standing ticket w my jr pass?
I will be travelling a lot by shinkansen in tohoko, some times just a few stops in between so I don’t mind standing, it’s better than making reservation every time I think
            Cheers

            1. Hi Joe san,

If you take Shinkansen which has only reserved seat, you cannot take it without booking. Even if you are okay with standing, it’s not accepted other than Komachi on Akita Shinkansen between Morioka and Akita. Only standing passengers are accepted only on this segment. I understand it’s troublesome to book all seats but you should do it.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com
