As the name tells you, Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass covers Kansai area (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Wakayama), Hiroshima and many places between these, such as Okayama, Kurashiki. But the coverage is much bigger. This pass covers even Takamatsu in Shikoku, Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Kii-Katsuura, Shingu.
I would like to share the information about Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass in this post.
Coverage Area
This pass covers whole part of Kansai area, such as Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara, Kansai Airport, Himeji and Wakayama. And it includes Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. And also this pass includes the conventional lines to Takamatsu in Shikoku, Kinosaki Onsen, Shirahama and Shingu in Kii peninsula, Hikone and Tsuruga too. Of course you can access Himeji, Okayama, Kurashiki, Onomichi, Miyajima and Iwakuni too. In addition, this pass covers Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate. It is a big benefit to visit northern Hyogo region.
If you want to access to Hakata, Yamaguchi or Sanin area, Sanyo Sanin Area Pass is recommended. But it does not include Kinosaki and Kii area.
JR West will also release Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass too. If you need an access to Hiroshima from Hakata side, this pass will be suitable for you.
Other part of Japan, such as Hokkaido, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kanazawa, Takayama, most part of Shikoku and Kyushu are not covered by this Pass. So if you intend to travel throughout Japan or travel to Tokyo, Hokkaido or Kyushu, Japan Rail Pass is maybe more suitable for you.
*Osaka – Tokyo one way trip is not enough to use JR Pass. Please see the the post, Japan Rail Pass user guide. How to use JR Pass to its maximum.
Valid trains, bus services, routes and class
All daytime trains in coverage area are covered. But reserved seat fee is NOT included as well. You have to take non reserved ordinary seat. Most of limited express and Shinkansen trains have non reserved seat. And Green seat is not covered fully either. If you want to take Green seat, this pass covers base fare only. You have to full of surcharge and Green seat fare.
Overnight option is not available in the coverage area. There are two overnight trains, Sunrise Izumo and Sunrise Seto are depart/arrive in the coverage area. But these trains run to Tokyo. You cannot stay overnight in the coverage ares by this pass.
Miyajima ferry is also covered. You have no problem to access to very popular World Heritage Miyajima.
As of mid April 2017, this pass started to cover JR bus in Kyoto, Fukui and Hiroshima. In Hiroshima, there are some bus routes which are covered by this pass. Especially Hiroshima sightseeing loop bus “Meipuru-pu” is very very useful. You can get most of popular spots in Hiroshima by this bus. Please see the link below:
Hiroshima sightseeing bus Meipuru-pu
In Kyoto, you can get Ryoan-ji temple, Kitano-Tenmangu shrine, Takao area via Nijo. This pass also covers Obamba to/from Omi-Imazu bus service and Sonobe to/from Fukuchiyama bus service.
This pass also started to cover Kyoto Tango railway as of mid April, 2017. You can get Amanohashidate, Miyazu without any extra charge.
When you use this deal, there are a few exceptions. You have to know that before you choose this deal. Please see the below to get the detailed information.
The Tokaido Shinkansen among Maibara, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka
Even though it is in the coverage area, you cannot take Shinkansen train in this segment. Because Tokaido Shinkansen belongs to other JR company, JR Central. It is same JR Group company and many trains go through both areas each other. But technically it is different company. Therefore this deal cannot include this Shinkansen segment. When you depart from Kyoto or Maibara and take Shinkansen, you have to take Special Rapid Service to Shin-Osaka and then transfer to Shinkansen train there.

Assessment
I believe this deal will be fit to many traveller’s itinerary who stay in Kansai area. If you have a plan to go to Hiroshima when you stay in Kansai area, this pass is the best choice. Hiroshima can be visited as day trip from Osaka or Kyoto.
Day trip to Hiroshima and Miyajima from Osaka/Kyoto
I strongly recommend you to stay in Kinosaki Onsen and Shirahama. But these destinations can be accessed as day trip too.
There are so many ways to use this deal. I hope you enjoy in Kansai and Hiroshima area by this deal.

Hi Takeshi,
Is it worth getting the Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass per my itinerary below:
1) Arriving to Osaka (ITM)
2) Hiroshima
3) Miyajima
4) Kyoto
5) Back to Osaka
Thanks
Hi Alice,
Kansai Hiroshima area pass works. But you cannot start using it at ITM. You need to take a bus to get JR Osaka (Umeda) first. The bus is not covered.

2. Dec 31, Shin Osaka – Hiroshima (only Sanyo train or i can take Hikari train as well)
3. Dec 31, Hiroshima – Shin Osaka (only Sanyo train or i can take Hikari train as well)
4. Jan 1, Osaka Loop on JR to universal studio and return to Osaka station
Many Thanks in advance for your help
Hi Antonio san,
Kansai Hiroshima area pass is the best choice.
You can take any Shinkansen trains, such as Nozomi, Mizuho, Hikari, Sakura and Kodama by this pass between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima.
Special rapid is okay from Kyoto to Osaka. But you can take other limited express trains, such as Thunderbird. You can avoid busy rapid train by taking these express trains. As long as you take a seat in non reserved car, it’s fully covered.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
could you give me some advice on my itinerary using the kansai hiroshima pass?
Day 1 Kansai airport-Osaka (save overnight) use osaka amzaing pass day 1 airport ver
Day 2 Osaka -Hiroshima
Day 3 Hiroshima -Okayama
Day 4-5 okayama to kyoto
Day 6 kyoto to Kobe? or nara? then to airport by 4pm
Also when i’m in hiroshima okayama and kyoto do i have to purchase a separate pass to get around the city or would i be better off just buying individual tickets ?
Thanks,
Dan
Hi Dan,
Your choices are right. You can use Osaka amazing pass on day 1 and Kansai Hiroshima area pass for the rest of 5 days.
In Hirohsima, you can use the bus by this pass.
https://www.chugoku-jrbus.co.jp/teikan/meipurupu/en/
In Kyoto, Nara and Kobe, please see the link below to find the coverage:

Hi Takeshi.
Have bought tickets for Osaka 🙂
My proposed itinerary :-
Day 1 (8/11/2017) : Kansai Airport – Shin-Osaka-Kobe-
-ShinOsaka
Day 2 (9/11/2017) : ShinOsaka-Kyoto-ShinOsaka
Day 3 (10/11/2017) : ShinOsaka-Kyoto-Nara-ShinOsaka
Day 4 (11/11/2017) : ShinOsaka-Himeji-ShinOsaka
Day 5 (12/11/2017) : Osaka
Day 6 (13/11/2017) : Osaka
Day 7 (14/11/2017) : ShinOsaka-Kansai Airport
I’m thinking of getting JR Kansai Wide Area Pass (5 days) + Osaka Amazing Pass (2 days) + ICOCA card.
Appreciate it if you could comment on my proposal 🙂
Hope to hear from you soon.
TQ
Hi Lisa,
If you want to take Shinkansen to Himeji, Kansai wide area pass is the choice. But you can get Himeji by ordinary train, such as Special rapid:
https://jprail.com/destinations/kansai-area/how-to-access-to-himeji-and-kobe-from-osaka.html
https://jprail.com/trains/sort-by-type/rapid-service/special-rapid-service.html
If you are okay to take Special rapid, you can use Kansai area pass 4 days for the first 4 days. it’s much cheaper:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/how-to-use-jr-west-kansai-area-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
Amazing pass is a good choice. You may add ICOCA card but not required. And also now Kansai one pass is available. It’s same type card as ICOCA but it offers discount at many attractions:
https://kansaionepass.com/en/about.html?info=1
At last, you can add Haruka discount ticket for the last day to KIX:

can i use this Kansai-Hiroshima pass if i stay in Namba area?
my concern is, i have to travel from ashihabara station to shin-osaka station to get the shinkansen to hiroshima.
can u please advise on this. tq.
Hi Nour,
You can take JR train from Namba. But you need to go to JR-Namba station. It’s a bit away from center of Namba.

Hi,
Is there any way I can extend to tsuwano with my kansai hiroshima pass?
Tq
Hi Nour,
If you have already got Kansai Hiroshima area pass, the only way is adding a single ticket for outside coverage area which is Hiroshima-Tsuwano by Shinkansen and ordinary train or Iwakuni-Tsuwano by ordinary train.
If you haven’t got Kansai Hiroshima area pass, you should buy Sanyo Sanin area pass.

Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hello Takeshi-San!
Thank you for the information!! I have a question if you don’t mind answering. Do you think this pass is worth it for my itinerary, or should I go with single subway tickets/cheaper options + highway bus?
Day 1: Kansai airport –> Osaka
Day 2: Osaka –> Kinosaki Onsen
Day 3: Kinosaki Onsen
Day 4: Kinosaki Onsen
Day 5: Kinosaki Onsen
Day 6: Kinosaki Onsen –> Wakayama Station
I did find highway buses cheaper than train tickets that go between Osaka and Kinosaki Onsen, but not sure which option would be most economical.
Thank you for your input!
Birdy
Hi Birdy,
How about using Kansai wide area pass for day 2 to 6?

You may use other deal for day 1.

Hi Takeshi-san,
I’m planning a trip to Japan in September/October – flying into Kansai and out from Haneda Airport. Tentative itinerary is as follows:
> 25 – 28 Sep: Osaka (stay a few days in Osaka, with side trips to Himeji, Kobe, Hiroshima/Miyajima),
> 29 – 30 Sep: Kinosaki Onsen for 2 nights
> 1 – 4 Oct:Kyoto (side trips to Nara and maybe Koyasan)
> 5-9 Oct: Tokyo
Based on the information on your website, I’m thinking that I will just get a one-way ticket from Kansai to Osaka (the option with emoney); then buy a 5 day JR West Kansai Hiroshima Pass which I will activate on 28 September (our last day in Osaka). Can I confirm that I can use the pass from Osaka – Kinosaki Onsen – Kyoto? (I think we can’t use on JR from Osaka to Kyoto).
I’ll then buy a one way pass on the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo.
I will be grateful if you can advise if the above is feasible?
Thank you in anticipation.
Lina
Hi Lina,
You can use Kansai Hiroshima area pass. It covers Osaka-Kinosaki-Kyoto. Actually it covers you can use JR between Osaka and Kyoto too. It does not cover only Shinkansen on this segment. You can take other trains between Osaka and Kyoto.
You can start using it on 28th. You may start using it on 27th too. It depends on your trip plan. But you should cover Himeji, Hiroshima/Miyajima and Kinosaki by this pass. Kobe can be combined with Himeji. Trip to Himeji is more expensive than trip to Nara. If you need to choose one of Kobe/Himeji and Nara, take Kobe/Himeji. You can get a bigger saving.
Kobe and Himeji are located on the way to Hiroshima. But it’s not recommended to combine Himeji, Kobe, Hiroshima and Miyajima. It’s too much.
You can use single ticket from Kyoto to Tokyo. If you are okay with spending a bit more time, Platt Kodama gives you some saving.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/platt-kodama-one-way-deal-among-tokyo-nagoya-kyoto-and-shin-osaka-by-shinkansen.html

Thank you very much Takeshi-san.
No worries, Lina San.

Hi, can i take the Limited Express Kuroshio from Shin-Osaka to Wakayama using the Kansai Hiroshima Pass? Are there any extra charges to be made assuming i don’t sit at the reserved seats (is it necessary to reserve?)
Hi Janice,
As long as you take non reserved car, you can take it without extra charge.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hello we are travelling to Japan 15th to 23rd July. Please advise the best rail pass for –
15th Kansai – sheraton miyako Osaka (one way)
16th Sheraton Osaka – Kyoto (bullet train return)
17th Sheraton Osaka – Kinosaki onsen
18th Kinosaki onsen – Kyoto (one way)
19th Kyoto – Kobe (return)
20th Kyoto – Himeji or Nara (return)
21st Kyoto – Hiroshima (return)
22nd Kyoto – Kanazawa (return)
23rd Kyoto – Kansai (one way)
Thank you
Hi Christina,
If you really need to take Shinkansen (bullet train) on 16th for trip to Kyoto, you need to use JR pass 7 days for 16th to 22nd.
You can use the following deals on arrival day and departure day.
Arrival http://www.howto-osaka.com/en/ticket/ticket/chikatoku.html
Departure https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/icoca-and-haruka-ticket-very-flexible-and-good-deal-for-tourist-who-stay-in-kansai.html
But if you don’t care about Shinkansen ride on 16th, you can get cheaper option. Before I recommend the deal, some changes on your itinerary are suggested.
Suggested itinerary
19th Kyoto – Himeji or Nara (return)
20th Kyoto – Hiroshima (return)
21st Kyoto – Kanazawa (return)
22nd Kyoto – Kobe (return)
23rd Kyoto – Kansai (one way)
For arrival and departure days, you can use same deals above. And I recommend you the following deals:
Kansai thru pass for 16th and 22nd.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-use-kansai-thru-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
Kansai Hiroshima area pass for 17th to 21st. See the post above.
And also you need to add Hokuriku area pass for trip to Kanazawa.
http://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/hokuriku/
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you for your very prompt snd efficient reply. Will those passes allow me to take the local buses and subways?
Also can you recommend another Kansai day trip if we dont go to Kanazawa. I have actually been to Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, Hiroshima before but its my friends first time visit.
We have used the 7 day JR pass during previous trips and find the booking system very easy to arrange. Is there a similar office at the train stations for these regional passes to help us?
Thank you
Hi Christina,
Kansai thru pass covers subway and bus but Kansai Hiroshima area pass does not cover. It’s same condition as JR pass. And also Kansai Hiroshima area pass does not cover reserved seat. You must find the seat in non reserved car. Please see the link below to find info about non reserved car.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/travel-tips/reserved-seat-vs-non-reserved-seat-how-to-get-a-seat-on-non-reserved-car.html
If you want to stay in Kansai area, Kansai thru pass is the best choice.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi there! This website has been most useful, thank you! I am planning a trip to Osaka/Kyoto and intend to take some day trips out of either city. We have actually been to Tokyo/Kyoto/Arashiyama/Himeji before during sakura season, and want to go back to Japan during autumn season this time round.
Does this itinerary work well?
Day 1: Osaka – Namba/Dotonbori (overnight in Osaka)
Day 2: USJ (overnight in Osaka)
Day 3: Day trip to Hiroshima & Miyajima (overnight in Osaka)
Day 4: Day trip to Kobe (overnight in Osaka)
Day 5: Transfer to Kyoto hotel, day trip to Nara (overnight in Kyoto)
Day 6: Leave big luggage at Kyoto hotel, go to Arashiyama (overnight in Arashiyama)
Day 7: Kyoto – autumn sights (overnight in Kyoto)
Day 8: Kyoto – autumn sights (overnight in Kyoto)
Day 9: Kyoto to Kansai Airport
Because of my trip duration, I suppose the Sanyo Sanin Area Pass works better because it’s valid for 7 days? Actually, what are the key differences between the Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass and the Sanyo Sanin Area Pass? Mainly the duration? Even if I take the 7-day pass, I realised I will still miss the Kansai Airport (both to and fro) legs, unless I shorten my trip…
Any advice you may have would be really appreciated, thank you! 🙂
Hi Sheryl,
I think Kansai Hiroshima area pass is okay for the first 5 days. You can get Arashiyama by JR train. But the fare is a few hundred yen. You can get the worth of Sanyo Sanin area pass by your first 7 days trip plan. You can use single fare ticket to take JR train in Kyoto. And also you may use Kyoto city deals for day 7 and 8 in the link below:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-kyoto.html
And you can use Haruka discount ticket at 1,600 yen to get KIX from Kyoto.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/icoca-and-haruka-ticket-very-flexible-and-good-deal-for-tourist-who-stay-in-kansai.html

Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you for your inputs!
I will further refine my itinerary and consider between the Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass and Sanyo Sanin Area Pass.
In Kyoto, I will be staying near the Kyoto Station. This means to get to Arashiyama, I should take the JR line. Do both passes mentioned above cover the journey to/from Arashiyama from Kyoto Station?
Thank you once again!
Hi Sheryl,
Both passes cover Kyoto – Arashiyama by JR train.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
Could you kindly provide some advice on my itinerary below?
21 Apr – Tokyo
22 Apr – Mt. Mitake
23 Apr – Mt. Fuji area – Shibazakura Festival, Lake Kawaguchi, Chureito Pagoda
24 Apr – Disneyland
25 Apr – Tokyo to Kyoto
26 Apr – Arashiyama
27-28 Apr – Kyoto, Kyoto to Osaka
29 Apr – Miyajima & Hiroshima (Take JR Loop Bus)
I am not sure will it be more worth it to get a 7-day Nationwide JR Pass or a Kansai-Hiroshima Pass + single ticket from Tokyo to Osaka. What would you recommend instead? Which day would you recommend me to start using the pass?
Also, the Kansai-Hiroshima Pass allows us to take Nozomi Shinkansen to Hiroshima right? I read from a website that the Kansai-Hiroshima Pass is allowed for local buses in Hiroshima as well. Does this include the Hiroshima JR Loop bus?
Website link: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_kansai_hiroshima.html
Thank you for your help.
Cheers,
Mie
Hi Mie,
Single fare for Tokyo to Kyoto is around 14000 yen. So single fare + Kansai Hiroshima pass is slightly cheaper but I recommend you to use JR pass. JR Pass does not cover Nozomi but Kansai Hiroshima area pass does not cover reserved seat fee. Please see the difference between reserved and non reserved in the link below:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/travel-tips/reserved-seat-vs-non-reserved-seat-how-to-get-a-seat-on-non-reserved-car.html
In my opinion, riding Nozomi is not an issue. You can catch Hikari or Sakura. Especially when you travel between Osaka and Hiroshima, Sakura’s reserved seat is much much better than Nozomi’s reserved / non reserved seat. You cannot take this seat by Kansai Hiroshima area pass. If you pay extra for this seat on top of Kansai Hiroshima area pass, JR pass will be cheaper.
I recommend you to use JR Pass for the last 7 days of your trip.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi-san,
Thanks for the recommendation. So I should activate it on the 23 Apr when I am travelling around Mt Fuji area right?
I am currently having a hard time planning the transportation around the 3 destinations so I would appreciate if you could provide me with some advise. It seems that the easiest to get to the Shibazakura Festival Venue is via the Highway bus from Shinjuku Bus terminal? However, I am not sure how should I travel to the other 2 venues. Can the JR pass be used?
Do you have a sample itinerary for similar tour?
Thank you,
Mie
Hi Mie,
JR Pass does not help much in Fuji area. Please see the link below:
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/how-to-use-japan-rail-pass-to-go-to-mt-fuji.html
You can take an express bus to Lake Kawaguchi or Shibazakura venue. It’s much easier than access by train. Bus runs very frequently between Lake Kawaguchi and Shibazakura venue. You can take Fuji Kyuko train from Kawaguchiko station (Lake Kawaguchi) to Shimo-Yoshida. Chureito is within walking distance from Shimo-Yoshida. Please see the link below:
