Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko are limited express trains to Izukyu-Shimoda or Shuzenji in Izu peninsula from Tokyo and Shinjuku. As probably you know, Izu peninsula is one of most famous hot springs resort area in Japan. These express trains take you to many places, such as Atami, Ito, Kwazu and Izu-Kogen, in Izu hot springs resort from Greater Tokyo area.

Saphir Odoriko was introduced on March 14th, 2020. This train offers high-end train service. This train does not have any ordinary class seat. All seats are Green seat (business class) or Premium Green seat (first class).

In this post, I will show you the interior, timetable, trip times and other trips of Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko.

Route, timetable and trip time

185 series still run as limited express train Odoriko. This fleet is used for rapid Moonlight Nagara too.

Odoriko and Saphir Odoriko connects Tokyo and Atami in 1 hour 30 minutes and connects Tokyo and Izukyu-Shimoda in 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours and conencts Tokyo and Shuzenji in 2 hours 10 minutes.

Restriction for JR Pass users

These trains are operated on both JR line and the private lines, Izu Kyuko Railway (Ito to Izukyu-Shimoda) and Izu Hakone Railways (Mishima to Shuzenji). If you take these train by JR Pass, JR Pass does not cover these private lines. You may have to pay the extra if you travel farther than Ito or Mishima.

Only base fare is required. Green seat car is not available on Odoriko to Shuzenji.

If you use JR East Pass or Tokyo Wide Pass, Izu-Kyuko line is covered. You can take an ordinary seat on the limited express Odoriko without any extra charge. But Saphir Odoriko is not covered at all by these passes because this train offers only Green class seat and Premium Green class seat. These passes do not cover Green and Premium Green seats. And these passes do not cover farther than Atami. The segment between Atami and Shuzenji is not covered at all by these passes.

Accommodation

Odoriko is operated by 185 series and 257 series. All 185 series will be replaces by 257 series sooner or later because this fleet is one of the oldest fleets in JR trains.

Saphir Odoriko is operated by 261 series. 261 series is designed for Saphir Odoriko and newly itroduced.

As I mentioned, Saphir Odiriko 261 series does not offer any ordinary class seats. It offers only Green class seat and Premium Green class seat.

    Am looking to travel from Tokyo Station to Shuzenji Station. Stay 2 nights at a ryokan in Izu and back again to Tokyo Station.

    1. Which pass do I get? I tried looking up JR Tokyo Wide, it doesn’t cover the Izuhakone part. Do I need to get 2 passes?
    2. Is the Super View Odoriko available for Tokyo – Shuzenji route? I only see that it stops at Izu Shimoda station.

    1. Hi Sanny,

      As you think, Tokyo Wide Pass does not cover for Atami-Shuzenji segment. Actually regular ticket is the best choice. Because regular fare for Tokyo to Atami is around 4,000 yen. You cannot get the worth by Tokyo to/from Atami round trip.

      Super View Odoriko does not run to Shuzenji. Only Odoriko runs to Shuzenji.

      If you arrive in Narita and come back to Tokyo in three days, Tokyo wide pass is recommended.

      You can take Narita Express from Narita to Tokyo and take limited express Odoriko to Shuzenji. However this pass does not cover the segment between Atami and Shuzenji.

      You need to add single fare for Atami to Shuzenji.

      If you arrive in Haneda, single ticket is cheaper than Tokyo wide pass. As far as I know, there is no deals available.

    We are travelling to Hotel Ambient Izukogen Annex on March 17, 2017. We will be arriving Haneda Airport at 13:30 hrs. I understand there is train services going to Atami or Ito.       You can take Keihin Kyuko train to Shinagawa.

      And then take Shinkasnen from Shinagawa to Atami and change to local train to Izu-Kogen. Most of limited express Odoriko run in the morning. You need to change trains at Atami. Please see the link below:

      If you intend to take Odoriko for both ways, it costs around 6000 yen for one way. Actually Tokyo Wide Pass is cheaper, if you complete the trip in 3 days.

  6. Hello, I hope you can help me. I cannot follow the JPRail site at all. I want to reserve some seats on the 9:24 Limited Express Odoriko. I am travelling from Osanbashi and understand that I have to get a taxi to Yokohama Station. From there we are going to Hakone.

    The website is very confusing and asks me if I am travelling East, to Hokkaido, or West. I have no idea. I have never been to Japan before. I just want to catch the 9:24 Limited Express Odoriko to Odawarra – I think that is the name and then get a train to Hakone. Is there a person to chat with online to walk me through the process of booking a seat? Or is there a direct email link, so I can email my request? This site really isn’t made for people who are completely unfamiliar with Japan or first time visitors to Japan.

      Basically you can book a seat at reservation window that is called “Midori no Madoguchi” as I explained in the link above.

      I also mentioned online booking site, JR East train reservation. You can use that to book your seat but you have to pick up your ticket by 21:00 day before travel date.

      P.S. This site is individual site and is managed just by myself. I try to explain as much as I can, but probably not enough for some readers. But this is not JR corporate site. So I cannot give you all information that you need. Thank you for your understanding.

      1. Thanks Takeshi for your help. I don’t think my parents will be able to book that train as they won’t be able to pick up the ticket until the actual day. So what they need to do is get a taxi from Osanbashi wharf to Yokohama train station and then catch a train to Odawarra? then change trains to Hakone? Does that sound right?

    I have a Japan Rail Pass and want to take the Odoriko.
    Where do I pay the supplement?
    Can I pay at any Jr office (for instance in Osaka), when I make a reservation for the shinkansen to Atami?
    Or do I have to pay it at an Atami ticket office?

      You may pay for express surcharge when you book a seat on Odoriko. But you probably have to pay base fare for Izu Kyuko on the spot. You can pay to the conductor on board or when you exit at the station on Izu Kyuko.

  9. I will visit Ito peninsula in mid April. I’m confused by JR pass, I’ll ride train from Shimado to Narita airport on my last day in Ito area. For my understanding, the 5 days pass include Nex train from Tokyo Station to Narita, right/ If no pass which means I have to buy JR east train plus express train fare from Tykyo to Narita? (I only stay 4 days in Japan. and will visit Ito area only.)

      If you don’t use any passes, you can purchase single fare and seat fare (express fare) for taking Narita Express. If you look for the way to get Narita from Tokyo station, budget bus is much cheaper. You can purchase regular ticket from Ito to Tokyo and you can take this bus in Tokyo station.

      I have another question. If I get off plane in Narita and buy single ticket to Itukogen. Then the following 3 days using JR 3 days pass which I can get on and off on Izu Kyuko Line the rest of 3 days before back to Narita airport, is that better than I purchase each time when I have to ride Izu Kyuko Line and another single ticket from Shimoda to Narita or still buy single ticket each time?
      (taking Izu Kyuko Line for a round trip from Itukogen to Jogasak and a single trip from Itukogen to Shimoda.)

        One way fare and express seat fee for Izukyu Shimoda to Narita airport is almost 10,000 yen. So you can get the worth of Tokyo Wide Pass easily because you will take Izu kyuko line a few time.

    We are planning a following trip at the end of March – early April 2017. What would be the best way to use the JR Pass and other trains? We are confused and would very much appreciate your help! Thank you so much 🙂
    1) 3/30-3/31 – leave Tokyo to Nagano to go see Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. Stay overnight at ryokan near there.
    2) 3/31 – 4/1 – Leave Nagano to Fuji Kawaguchiko. Stay overnight.
    3) 4/1 – 4/2 – Fuji Kawaguchiko to Izu Shimoda . Stay overnight.
    4) 4/2 – Return to Tokyo.

      But this pass does not cover the following segments:
      Otsuki-Kawaguchiko (Fuji Kyuko line)
      Kawaguchiko-Mishima (Fuji Kyuko bus)
      Mishima-Atami (JR train)

      When you travel from Mishima to Atami, that is JR line but it’s outside coverage area. Once you get Atami, It’s covered.

        Thank you for your reply. I have one question. Do you think the best way to get to Fuji kawaguchiko from
        Nagano is to go back to Tokyo via Hokuriku Shinkansen and take JR Chuo line through Takaomachi station and then take Fuji kyuko line from Otsuki? Or take JR Shinano from Nagano and JR Chuo Line Limited express to Otsuki and take Fujikyuko? Which do you recommend?

          In most cases, Hokuriku Shinkansen and Chuo line route is faster and train runs more frequently. But Nagano-Matsumoto-Otsuki route is more scenic. Trip time is about 30 minutes to 45 minutes longer. So you can choose whichever you like.
