I have received many inquiries about Osaka-Tokyo one way trip plus Hakone and Fuji. In this case, Japan Rail Pass is too expensive for Osaka-Tokyo one way trip. So I would like to show you a classic itinerary for this trip. I want to share with you about how to combine several deals and single tickets.

What kind of ticket you need

From Kansai to Narita

ICOCA and Haruka one way ticket / 3000 yen

Kansai Airport is the gateway to this itinerary. ©Kansai International Airport Co.,Ltd/©JNTO

Ticket : ICOCA and Haruka

After arrival at KIX, go to JR Kansai Airport station and purchase ICOCA and Haruka one way ticket.
Limited Express Haruka is only direct train service from KIX to Kyoto. This is the best and the fastest. It runs almost every hour. It takes about 1.5 hour to get Kyoto from KIX.

If you are not hurry, try to complete all JR train bookings at Kansai Airport station. If you can’t, you can do it at JR Kyoto station. You have to purchase and book all ticket except Fuji Hakone Pass and Limited Express surcharge for Odakyu Romancecar.

Use ICOCA for your sightseeing in Kyoto. I think 1500 yen e-money cover most of your trip in Kyoto.

Overnight in Kyoto

Day 3 / Kyoto – Tokyo – Shinjuku – Hakone

Ticket : Base fare ticket from Kyoto to Shinjuku, Shinkansen Nozomi supplement ticket, Fuji Hakone Pass

Kyoto 08:02 departure by Shinkansen Nozomi 306
Shinagawa 10:13
Take local train (Yamamote line) to get Shinjuku. It takes abut 20 minutes.
Shinjku 11:40 (Chuo Highway Bus)
Kawaguchiko station 13:32
After arrival at Kawaguchiko station, enjoy sightseeing around Lake Kawaguchi.

When you depart from Kyoto, you can take any Shinkansen train to Tokyo or Shinagawa. Please see JR Central Shinkansen timetable (PDF).

After arrival at Shinjuku station, go to Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Odakyu Shinjku station to get Fuji Hakone Pass.
*Please see Odakyu website to get more detail about Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shijuku station.

By the way, Hakone and Fuji are located between Kyoto and Tokyo. Especially Odawara is the nearest station to Hakone and there is Shinkansen station. But I have two reasons why I skip Odawara and go to Tokyo. First of all, Fuji Hakone Pass is only unlimited ride ticket that covers both Hakone and Fuji can be purchased at Odakyu Shinjuku station only. We cannot purchase it at Odawara and any other stations other than Shinjuku. Second reason is luggage storage. In the trip to Fuji and Hakone, you will take lots of transportation and stay at different hotels for this 3 days trip. If you have a bit luggage, like full size suitcase, the luggage will be a big problem. So why don’t you leave your luggage in Shinjuku? This Fuji and Hakone trip is starting from Shinjuku and finish in Shinjuku. You can pack small luggage for just two nights trip to Fuji and Hakone. If you book hotel near Shinjuku station, you may be able to leave your luggage at the hotel. If you can’t you can use coin locker or storage service in the station.

In Fuji and Hakone, Odakyu Railway’s website provide nice itinerary and information about this trip. Please see Fuji-Hakone model course. But in this itinerary, recommended accommodations are a bit pricey. You can make an arrangement whatever you want.

Overnight in Lake Kawaguchi

Day 4 / Lake Kawaguchi – Gotemba – Hakone

Hakone Ropeway is one of the best way to see the mountains surrounding Hakone. ©Odakyu Electric Railway/©JNTO

Ticket : Fuji Hakone Pass

From Lake Kawaguchi to Gotemba, you can take Fuji Kyuko Bus by Fuji Hakone Free Pass. Unfortunately English timetable is not available, but you can check it at Japanese website. Please check Fuji Kyuko Bus website. There are two tables. Lower table is to Gotemba from Lake Kawaguchi. Lake Kawaguchi is shown as “河口湖駅” at the top of the table. Gotemba is shown as 御殿場駅(着)at the 4th row from the bottom. If you want to go to Gotemba Premium Outlet, you see “御殿場プレミアムアウトレット” at 2nd row from the bottom. If you click “11時~15時”, timetable shows timetable between 11:00 and 15:00. If you click “16時~19時”, you will see the bus between 16:00 and 19:00.

From Gotemba to Hakone-Togendai, take Odakyu highway bus. Timetable is shown on this PDF.

After arrival in Hakone-Togendai, you can enjoy cruise on Lake Ashi, Gondola ride or Hakone Tozan bus. All transportation guide in Hakone can be seen at Hakobe Navi.

Overnight in Hakone

Day 5 / Hakone – Tokyo

Ticket : Fuji Hakone Pass, Supplement ticket for Odakyu Romancecar

First of all, access to Hakone-Yumoto station. You can access there by Hakone Tozan Bus or Hakone Tozan Railway.

After arrival in Hakone-Yumoto station, you can take Odakyu Limited Express train “Romancecar” to Shinjuku directly. You have to pay additional 870 yen on Fuji Hakone Pass. But it is fast and more comfortable than local train. I strongly recommend to take this train.

If you leave your luggage in Shinjuku, don’t forget to pick up. Lots of shops and restaurant open until late in Shinjuku. You can enjoy Tokyo even after come back from Hakone.

Overnight in Tokyo

Day 6 / Tokyo

Ticket : Maybe subway pass (not included in total cost)

If you visit several places in one day, you may think about purchasing subway pass. Please see the post, Fast, economical and convenient for sightseeing in Tokyo. Learn about Tokyo Subways.

Overnight in Tokyo

Day 7 / Tokyo – Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND)

Ticket : Single ticket to Narita from Shinjuku and Supplement ticket for Narita Express (to Narita)
Single ticket to Shinagawa from Shinjuku (JR) and Shinagawa to Haneda Airport International Terminal (Keihin Kyuko)

If you go to Narita, Narita Express is the best option from Shinjuku. It is direct service and on time. You may be able to take direct limousine bus to Narita from the door of your hotel. Please see the post, Compare many rail services and shuttle bus. How to get downtown Tokyo from Narita airport.

If you go to Haneda, it is simple. Just purchase the ticket at the vending machine in the station. You don’t need to prepare in advance.

You can extend as you like

I tried to put everything in 7 day. So I skipped Osaka and Nara. Of course you can add anywhere between Osaka and Tokyo if you have extra time. If you want to stop at Osaka, you can still use ICOCA and Haruka. ICOCA can be used for Osaka subway as well. If your ICOCA is empty before you go to Kyoto, you can add Kyoto city pass for your sightseeing in Kyoto.

Of course you can complete this itinerary in reverse. Total cost is a bit higher but not much different.

    hi Mr takeshi,

I hope you can suggest which rail pass should i use for our 7-day tour in japan. i am thinking of buying the 7-day JR rail pass but i still don’t know if its worth it. this is my itinerary:

may9- arrive in haneda aiport at 2300
    may 10-tokyo city tour
may11-hakone day tour and back to tokyo ( is it better to stay overnight in hakone then from there travel to kyoto?)
    may12-travel to kyoto
    may 13- kyoto tour
may 14- travel to osaka (do you think one day tour is enough in osaka?)
may 15-departure in osaka around 0010

although my itinerary is a little bit like the reverse side of yours(except for osaka tour), i still get confused. i hope you can help me. thanks!

Below is my 10 days itinerary: –

Day 1 tokyo haneda-shinjiku by limousine bus
    Day 2 tokyo-disneyland
    Day 3 tokyo city tour
    Day 4 tokyo city tour

    Day 7 kyoto

For the above plan, worth to buy JR Pass 7 days. If yes, start from which day? And also please suggest the cheaper passes for my trip. Thank you.

    Regards,
    yip

    • Hi yip,

JR Pass 7 days is the best choice. You can start to use it on day 4 to the end of your trip.

      Cheers,

    Hi,

I found that your guide suits me well. However, therr’s a problem with my plan. I would like to explore Osaka first, then travel to Kyoto. Since I prefer to stay at Dotonbori area, it would be quite a fuss to go all the way back to Kansai Airport to buy the ICOCA & Haruka pass. Is it then better to buy the 2 days Osaka pass and then take Haruka to Kyoto?

    Thanks.

  4. Sal says:

    Hi Takeshi

Let me start by thanking you for your amazing work you’re doing here to help people visiting Japan.
You make it much easier for people to explore Japan.

I have few questions of my own
I will be visiting japan with two other friends on the end of March. This will be our itinerary.
    From to
    28-Mar 2-Apr Tokyo
    2-Apr 6-Apr Osaka
6-Apr 8-Apr Takaragawa Onsen (nearest station is JR Minakami Station)
    8-Apr 11-Apr Tokyo

arrive on 28 and leave on 11, Total of 15 days. It includes trips to Nikko, Nara, and Mt Fuji.

Will a 14 day Pass will be useful? What do you suggest?
On the 6-Apr we will leave from Osaka to Takaragawa (morning or afternoon?) which trains to take? I tried http://www.hyperdia.com but it give so many options that got me lost *_*

We are planning to go to(Harajuku, Akihabara, bamboo forest, Kyoto Imperial Palace/Maruyama Park in Kyoto) do you have any other suggestion to make the most of our JR pass?

Again thank you very much for all the effort you put to help and support others.

    Sal

    • JPRail says:

      Hi Sal,

Thank you for your comment about my website.

You can use 14 days pass. This is the easiest and the best deal.

When you go to Takawaragawa Onsen from Osaka, the following route is recommended.

Shin-Osaka (Tokaido Shinkansen) Tokyo (Joetsu Shinkansen) Jomo-Kogen
Hotel site says they have free shuttle service at 14:00 from Jomo-Kogen station. (reservation required)
      Shin Osaka 9:13 (Hikari 514) 12:10 Tokyo 12:44 (Max Tanigawa 411) 13:59 Jomo Kogen
This connection is the best to get free shuttle. I think this free shuttle is prepared for this train, Max Tanigawa 411.

You can go Kobe, Nara, even Hiroshima as day trip from Osaka. Nikko as day trip from Tokyo is possible.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail

    hi Takeshi,

I and my bf planning to go Japan about 10days during this year november. I would like to know if i go on 21st November, am i still able to see the peak autumn foliage in kyoto or should i go 1 week earlier? If i want to go osaka, kyoto, mount fuji and tokyo in one way, is it worth to buy 1 week JR Rail Pass? Is nagoya worth visit?

    • JPRail says:

      Hi dunkpitter,

      1. Fall foliage
It will be okay to see in late November

      2. JR Pass
Single trip is not enough. You will use some Kansai Area deals and single fare from Osaka to Tokyo. You need to build the detailed itinerary. Otherwise you can’t compare single fares and deals in Kansai area.

      3. Ngoya
I don’t recommend if you don’t have anything to visit.

      Cheers,

    Good Evening

We will be visiting Chiba in July for a conference.

As I won’t be attending all the sessions my party and I would like to do day trips to various areas within Tokyo and Mount Fuji. We would love to visit Kyoto and Hiroshima for about three days. Will the 7 day pass be applicable and can it take us all the way to Hiroshima?

    Thanks for your assistance.

  7. Priscilla says:

    Dear Takeshi san,

I somehow felt shy and hesitant to post a comment on here and ask if you could kindly break it down for a very confused and overwhelmed me – but I finally decided to put it out there and I’d so very appreciate it if you could get back to me at your earliest convenience!

My family and I will be visitng Japan for the very first time this upcoming May, and it seems that regardless how many forums and articles I’ve read about different passes and travel options, I’m still as confused as ever! 🙁 What would be the most economical yet efficient way to get around?

7 day JR pass, Suica card, 2 day passes in Kyoto, 1 day pass in Osaka… the list goes on – and I feel no closer to figuring it out than the first day I started looking into it!

    So here goes nothing:

Day 1: Flying into Narita airport, hotel in Shinagawa
    Day 2: Tokyo
    Day 3: Hakone (day trip)
    Day 4: Tokyo to Osaka
    Day 5: Osaka to Kyoto
    Day 6: Kyoto
Day 7: Back to Osaka, fly out of Osaka

It would be awesome and amazing if you could give me a general idea of the best way to go about buying what I need to buy to get around… and thank you very much!

  8. Handoko Taniwidjojo says:

    Dear Takeshi-san,

Your commentary are so fabulous. However I am still a bit confused with the type of passes that are available, as I am now trying to find the most economical.
I plan to visit Japan on May for 10 days and as of now my itinerary will be :
Day 1 : Arriving in Narita and take flight to Sapporo
Day 2-5 : Moving around Sapporo, Hakodate, Otaru, Furano etc.
Day 5 : Flying to Tokyo or Osaka (pm)
Day 6-9: Moving around Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fuji
Day 10 : Departing from Narita.

My question is, would there be any train pass that works for my itinerary ?

    • JPRail says:

      Hi Handoko,

If you will arrive in Tokyo after Sapporo, you can use JR Pass 7 days for Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Fuji-Tokyo portion. But if you arrive in Osaka after Sapporo, single fare will be your choice for Kyoto/Osaka-Tokyo portion.
It’s very hard to compare which one is cheaper because you have to compare flight fare from Sapporo-Tokyo or Osaka.

JR Pass 7 days price is almost double of Tokyo-Osaka single fare and Shinkansen surcharge. But it does not included the fare for airport-downtown transportation. Osaka has two airports, Itami and Kansai. Itami is domestic airport and closer to downtown than Kansai. But there are several deals for Ksanai airport arrival passengers.

Anyway you have to decide which city you will go to after Sapporo. And then I can show you some options.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail

      • Handoko Taniwidjojo says:

        Dear Takeshi-san,

Thanks to your comments and feedback. I think I understand your points, so after looking deeper into the timing and priority, very likely my upcoming itinerary will be :
Day 1 to 5 : In Hokaido Moving around Sapporo, Hakodate, Lake Akan, Otaru.
Day 6 : Flying to Tokyo.
Day 7 to 9 : Staying in Tokyo, moving around Hakone, Mt Fuji, Kyoto.
Day 10 : Depart from Narita.

So I guess I need to buy Hokkaido Rail Pass to cover the long distance Sapporo-Hakodate vv and perhaps single fare will be more economical to cover my trips from Tokyo.
I have looked at the possibilities to take Sapporo/Hakodate – Tokyo train if I am holding a JRP, but seems the surcharge is more expensive than by airplane and 1 night hotel.

Your comments will be very much appreciated.

        Best Regards,
        Handoko

        • JPRail says:

          Hi Handoko,

First of all, you can use 7 days JR Pass for Day 6 after arrival at the airport to day 10 to the airport. You will have round trip to Kyoto from Tokyo and may take train to Narita. 7 days pass will be cheaper than single fares.

If you are okay with daytime train transfer from Hokkaido to Tokyo, you can use JR pass 14 days for all part of your trip. In this case, you don’t need to buy Hokkaido rail pass, of course.

          ex)
JR Pass 7 days @ 28300 yen + Hokkaido rail pass @ 19500 yen = 47800 yen (+ air fare from Sapporo to Tokyo)
          JR Pass 14 days @ 45100 yen

As you see, 14 days pass is much cheaper. It will be a long trip from Hokkaido to Tokyo. But if you stay in Hakodate at the end of trip in Hokkaido, you will take Limited Express Super-Hakucho and Tohoku Shinkansen. But it will take about 6 hours.

If you care about cost, 14 days JR Pass is your choice. If you don’t accept 6 hours train trip, take a flight to Tokyo from Sapporo.

Regarding overnight train, it’s not a good choice. As you said, surcharge and accommodation fee is quite expensive and very hard to book

          Cheers,

          Takeshi / JP Rail

          • Handoko Taniwidjojo says:

            Dear Takeshi-san,

Thank you for all the suggestion especially the 6 hrs train from Hakodate to Tokyo, which I thought the only available train for this route was the night train. Therefore I want your feedback again to my revised itinerary :

Day 1 : Arrive in Tokyo, take flight to Sapporo.
Day 2 : Stay in Sapporo (Single fares or one day pass if available)
            Day 3 : Sapporo – Otaru – Lake Akan – Sapporo.
            Day 4 : Sapporo – Hakodate.
            Day 5 : Hakodate – Noboribetsu – Hakodate
            Day 6 : Hakodate – Tokyo.
            Day 7 : Tokyo – Kyoto – Tokyo.
            Day 8 : Tokyo – Shirakawa go – Kanazawa – Tokyo
            Day 9 : Tokyo – Hakone / Mt Fuji
Day 10: Stay in Tokyo.(one day pass)
Day 11: Tokyo – Narita to depart.(single fare)

I am thinking of purchasing JRP for 7 days and activated on Day 3. Would that be good option ?

            Best regards,

            Handoko

            • JPRail says:

              Hi Handoko,

If you use 7 days pass, that is a good idea. It’s the way of minimizing your budget.
But I’m just want to make sure a few things.

              1. Tokyo – Shirakawa go – Kanazawa – Tokyo
Are you sure you will spend more than 10 hours for just transfer?
              4.5 hours Tokyo – Takayama
1 hour Takayama – Shirakawago (But not covered by JR Pass)
1 1/4 hour Shirakawago – Kanazawa (But not covered by JR Pass)
              4 – 4.5 hours Kanazawa – Tokyo

              2. Tokyo – Kyoto – Tokyo
It’s easier than Tokyo – Shirakwaago, but you will spend at least 5 hours for just transfer.

              3. Tokyo – Hakone/Mt. Fuji
If you are okay to see Mt. Fuji from Hakone, it’s okay. But you can’t visit both Hakone and another Fuji spot, like Lake Kawaguchi. It’s located at other side of Hakone.

I recommend you the following route:
Day 7 : Tokyo – Shirakawa go – Kanazawa (stay in Kanazawa)
Day 8 : Kanazawa – Kyoto (stay in Kyoto)
              Day 9 : Kyoto – Odawara – Hakone – Tokyo

I think this is more comfortable.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JP Rail

              • Handoko Taniwidjojo says:

                Dear Takeshi-san,

Thanks for the prompt reply and great feedback related to the travel duration to be spent.
Regarding the Shirakawago trip, I had not studied the travelling time yet, I just thought it did not seem too far from Tokyo, thanks that you warned me about that. I am trying to find alternate destination that is much closer for a day trip, any suggestion ?

In the latest itinerary I am still trying to to make a few day trips only, because my wife and I are not sure whether it would be comfortable to carry a big suitcase (we will be away for 12 days) around in term of space in the train and the availability of escalators in all the stations. If you think the above should not be any issues, then certainly I will modify my itinerary to become more comfortable, like staying a night in Kyoto rather than rushing back to Tokyo in the same
                day.

                Best Regards,

                Handoko

                • JPRail says:

                  Hi Handoko,

You may consider some places in Kanto area, like Nikko, Kamakura, Kusatsu Onsen.
                  http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1103.html

Regarding baggage, you may leave most part of your baggage in Tokyo and visit Kyoto or other places. If you use same hotel in Tokyo, I think you can leave your luggage at hotel. So you can visit outside of Tokyo with minimum luggage.

                  Cheers,

Thank you again for all your great advices, I will try to fine tune my itinerary to be more comfort.

By holding a JRP, do we need to pay seat reservation fee in case we will use the reserved seat ?
And if we want to upgrade to green car in specific trip, would that be possible ? If it is possible where can we see the surcharge ?

                    Best regards,

                    Handoko

                    • JPRail says:

                      Hi Handoko san,

JR Pass covers all reserved seat fee. So you can book it without any extra with JR pass.
If you use Green seat by ordinary pass, you have to pay Green seat fee and express surcharge. JR Pass covers only base fare. If you check it at hyperdia, you will find “fare” and “seat fee”. JR Pass covers “fare” only.

                      Cheers,

If I am holding ordinary JRP, the seat reservation fee is covered, but if I am to sit in Green car in this particular section then I should pay an extra of Y 3510 or the difference between Y 3510 and Y 1090 ?

                      Best regards,

                      Handoko

                      Hi Handoko san,

You have to pay full 3510 yen. JR Pass includes limited express charge, but if you take Green, you have to pay this too.

                      Cheers,

    Hi Takeshi San,

Your website is really informative and I have founded so much information in here for my incoming trips. But still not sure about the cards that I need. Below are my itineraries:

Day 1 – Haneda – Shinjuku by limousine bus
Day 2-3 – Tokyo sightseeing (suica?)
Day 4 – Shinjuku – KAwaguchi by bus
Day 5 – Kawaguchi – Kyoto (I have been informed to take fujikyu bus to Mishima and then Shinkansen to Kyoto) or should I back to Shinjuku as per your suggestion
Day 6 – 7 Kyoto (kyoto sightseeing cards?)
Day 8 – Kyoto to Kansai Airport (buy 1days JR west Pass?)

    Thank you so much

      Hi Servi,

      My answers are the following:

      1. Tokyo sightseeing
Metro pass may be cheaper. There are several kinds of deal.
      http://www.tokyometro.jp/en/ticket/value/airport_bus/index.html
Limousine bus and metro pass combination is available too.

      2. Trip to Kyoto from Lake Kawaguchi.
You can go to Mishima by bus and catch Shinkansen. But Shinkansen trains are not very frequent at Mishima. Please see the following link to get a timetable of Shinkansen.
      http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/_pdf/westbound.pdf
All Nozomi (the fastest train) do not stop at Mishima and most of Hikari (second fastest) do not stop at Mishima either. So you may have to take slow Kodama train.
Nozomi Tokyo-Nagoya less than 2 hours
Kodama Mishima-Nagoya more than 2 hours
That is reason why via Tokyo route is faster than Mishima route. So check the bus timetable to Mishima and Shinkansen. Maybe you can find a good connection.

      3. Kyoto and trip to KIX
Kyoto sightseeing card and Kansai Area Pass 1 day are right choice.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail

    Dear Takeshi san,
    Greetings from Indonesia.

I would like to seek for ur kind advise for our upcoming itinerary:
    Day 1. Arrived Osaka
    Day 2. Universal Studio Osaka
    Day 3. Osaka – Kyoto – Osaka
    Day 4. Osaka – Nara – Osaka
    Day 5. Osaka – Tokyo
    Day 6. Tokyo sightseeing
    Day 7. Disneyland/disneysea
    Day 8. Tokyo – Hakone/Gotemba
Day 9. Tokyo – Haneda, return back home.

We are planning to purchase JR pass and activate it on day 3. While during our stay at Osaka, ICOCA will be our option with 2000 yen e money.

Please kindly advise, will it worth to buy JR pass for above itineraries? We might eliminate Nara, if time doesn’t permit.

    Thank you for the assistance.
