Sunrise Seto is the Overnight train that operated between Tokyo and Takamatsu in Shikoku island. This train is combined with Sunrise Izumo between Tokyo and Okayama. This train depart late night and arrive early morning. If you want to save the time, this train is the perfect choice.

(Please see my passenger’s review too)

Some of overnight train consist of the bedroom and the berth only. This train has the reserved seat. So Japan Rail Pass holder can take this train without the extra. This reserved seat is called “Nobi Nobi Seat”. It is like a berth and much more comfortable than the coach type seat. You can lie on the seat. And you have some privacy because there is a small partition between the seat and the seat.

But some of Japan Rail Pass users want to take a bedroom or another choice even though additional will be charged. Let’s see the accommodation of Sunrise Seto.

  1. Hi there. I’m activating my JR Pass on Saturday 5th September and I want to travel from Tokyo -> Takamatsu that night.
    Two questions –
    1) I have a “green” pass, do I get any further discounts on non-Nobi Nobi seats because of that
    2) Can I book a single deluxe, single or solo compartment in advance of activating my JR Pass? I’m worried about missing out if Saturday night travel is a particularly busy time to travel?
    Thanks and regards
    Mel

    1. Hi Mel,

      1. No. Green pass cannot give you any discount or refund even if you can take only ordinary seat.
      2. Once you exchange your pass, you can start to book even if you don’t start to use it. For example, you will start using pass on 5 Sep but you will exchange your pass on 1 Sep, you can book it on 1 Sep.

      Cheers,

  2. Dear JP rail
    I have question.
    1. Two passenger name A and B. A has JR pass, but B bas not JR pass.
    2. They rest together in “Single Twin berth” of Sunrise Seto night train for 1 night, from Okayama to Tokyo.
The question is how much the net price for A and B for rest in Single twin berth, thank you.

    1. Hi Porpla,

Even JR pass holder have to pay express surcharge and accommodation fee. You can find these fares at the post above. So only difference between JR pass and Non JR pass is base fare. You can find base fare at Hyperdia.
      http://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/for-non-jr-pass-travellers-guide-to-use-jr-single-ticket-basic-rules-validity-and-stopover.html

When you check the fare at Hyperdia, it may show you other than Sunrise, such as Shinkansen. But base fare is same between Sunrise and other trains. Ignore seat fare and just find base fare (shown as “Fare).

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      1. Thank you very much for your reply. Your reply make me easy to plan.
        The other quesstion.
In hyperdia, type of sleeper car in Sunrise Seto train are
        1) sleeper car A (passenger car upper)
        2) sleeper car A (passenger car lower)
        3) sleeper car B (passenger car upper)
        4) sleeper car B (passenger car lower)
        5) sleeper car B (electric car upper)
        6) sleeper car B (electric car middle)
        7) sleeper car B (electric car lower)
I wonder the “Single twin berth” mean sleeper car B(electric upper and middle), true or false?
How difference about passenger car and electric car?
        Thank you.

        1. Hi Porpla,

Actually Hyperdia does not show correct fee for compartment. These rates are regular berth but Sunrise does not have regular berth. I think Hyperdia still has old data in the database. These fee does not mean anything. So please find only base fare at Hyperdia and find the seat fee at my post.

Most cars of Sunrise has two floors. All Sunrise Twin are located at lower floor.

          Cheers,

  3. Helloo Takeshi,

a Few months ago, i use my jr pass to take sunrise seto. but the officer on the train said that jr pass can not use in this train (i try to catch the train from Osaka).

Did i have to make reservation first? why i can not just hop on the train? especially because there’s a lot of empty seat.

This week i will try again to ride sunrise seto, please give me advise. looking forward for your reply

    regards, nova

    1. Hi Nova,

As I mentioned above, Nobi Nobi seat is covered by JR pass fully. But it’s reserved seat. No one can take this seat without reservation even if there are lots of empty seat. So if you book your seat before on board, it’s covered fully.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  4. Hi Takesi-san,
I am planning my trip to Japan.
Since my trip only have 3 day ,I think by JR pass is not a bargain,
So may I know how much if I just buy a single trip ticket from Tokyo to Okayama for Nobi Nobi seat?

    1. Hi Mike,

Express surcharge is 3,760 yen. You may find the base fare at Hyperdia:
      http://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/hyperdia-perfect-guide-train-timetable-and-route-search-engine.html

Sorry but I don’t calculate for the fare individually because if I do it, I need to do for all readers. But I gave you only the cost of express surcharge because it’s hard to find. Please understand.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  5. Hello!
I am just curious if there are any times of the year and which days of the week it is easier to get a reservation for nighttrain ticket on Sunrise Express train.

Is it easier for the eastward trains than westward?

  6. Hello Takeshi,

I have a question regarding using JR Pass on Sunrise train. If I board the train at 23:35 in the last day of the JR pass vailidity, and finish my trip the second day, is the trip covered by JR Pass? I have conflicting info, some people say it is (because I start the journey while the pass is still valid) and others say it is not (because I finish my journey after the pass expires)…

    Thank you very much,
    Radu

    1. Hi Rabu,

JR Pass official site mentioned the following condition:

The definition of “1 day” is 00:00 to 23:59. If you start to use 7 days pass on April 1, your pass is expired at 23:59 on April 7. However if you are on board at 0:00 on the last day, you still can take a train. Your pass cover until you get off the train. After you get off the train, as long as you don’t exit the station, your pass still cover basic fare.

Since JR Pass official site updated in a half year ago, it does not say anything about this condition any more. But in my understanding, this condition still existed. I think JR does not want to tell this condition officially.

If you are worry about it, please ask your agent who you have purchased the pass, just in case.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail
