I have received inquiries about the trip to Kansai area many times. So I make a basic itinerary that includes Kansai area, such as Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara only. This is 7 days itinerary. But you can shorten or extend as you can.
Now I would like to tell you the best route and most economical deals about this trip.
Day 1 – Kansai airport (KIX) to Kyoto
Kansai One Pass and Haruka one way trip to Kyoto at 4,600 yen.
Overnight around JR Kyoto station
If you arrive in Kyoto early, you can visit somewhere around Kyoto station. Fushimi Inari is only 5 minutes away from Kyoto station. Kyoto Tower is just located in front of Kyoto station. You can use Kansai One Pass to get there.
Day 2 and 3 – Sightseeing in Kyoto
There are several deals available. I recommend you to use both Kansai One Pass and Kyoto City Bus Pass. Kansai One Pass covers city bus too but Kansai One Pass does not give you unlimited travel. It offers only convenience. On the other hand, Kyoto City Bus Pass is sold at 600 yen for one day. You can take a bus as many as you want. You can get the worth of it by only 3 rides. You can use Kansai One Pass only for taking a train and/or a subway.
Kyoto City Bus and Subway Pass (Kyoto Sightseeing Card) is also available. But this does not cover other railways, such as JR, Hankyu, Keihan railways. You will take various trains in Kyoto. Please see the link below to find the train route in Kyoto:
You can get anywhere in downtown Kyoto by bus. It is possible to visit all places only by city bus. However city bus is always crowded and the traffic in Kyoto has been very heavy in these days. I recommend you to take a train or a subway as much as you can.
Kansai One Pass and Bus Pass are the best combination for sightseeing in Kyoto, in my opinion.
Day 4 – Trip to Nara and transfer to Osaka
Visit Nara on the way to Namba, Osaka from Kyoto.
You can take either Kintetsu Railway or JR to get Nara. Both trains depart from Kyoto station. But Kintetsu railway’s Nara station is better location. It is 1 km closer to most of tourist spots in Nara than JR Nara station.
After Nara, you can take either JR or Kintetsu to get Osaka. Please see the link below to find the route to Nara:
Day 5 – Trip to Kobe and Himeji from Osaka
You may use JR Kansai Area Pass one day at 2,200 yen if you book it online in advance. If you buy it online, you have to exchange the pass at Shin-Osaka, Osaka, Kyoto or Kansai airport.
You can purchase this pass at many major stations in downtown Osaka but the price is a bit higher. There is other trains to Kobe and Himeji, like Hanshin railway. But JR is the fastest to get Himeji. Please see the post, How to access to Himeji and Kobe from Osaka to get the details.
Day 6 – Sightseeing in Osaka
There are lots of deals available in Osaka. Please see the link below to find the deal:
How to choose the pass for sightseeing in Osaka
Day 7 – Osaka to Kansai airport (KIX)
If you want to take Haruka again, you can purchase Haruka discount ticket. This discount ticket is available for overseas tourist who has ICOCA or Kansai One Pass only.
ICOCA and Haruka, Kansai One Pass and Haruka
Otherwise you can choose other deal in the link below:
How to choose the deal for trip to/from KIX
I hope this sample helps you to build your trip plan.

Hi Takeshi-san
Can you recommend which rail pass we should purchase based on our itinerant?
We have 4 girls, 2 will only join us at Day 4.
Day 1: 2.30pm Reach Kansai Airport. Osaka sightseeing
Day 2: Osaka or Kobe sightseeing
Day 3: Depart Osaka to Kyoto
Day 4: Kyoto sightseeing
Day 5: Kyoto sightseeing
Day 6: Depart Kyoto to Osaka
Day 7: Osaka sightseeing
Day 7: 9.30am flight depart Kansai Airport.
For the 2 girls who arrive Kansai Airport at 9.40pm, i think is very risk to take Haruka express to Kyoto because the last train is 10. 16pm. What is your recommendation for them? Overnight in airport and take the Day 4 earliest train and meet us at Kyoto?
Hi Michelle san,
For day 1 and 7, please see the link below to find the deal:
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/airport-access/kansai-kix/how-to-choose-the-deals-for-access-tofrom-kansai-airport.html
For day 2, 3 and 6, Kansai thru pass is recommended.
For day 4, 5 and 7, please see the links below:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-kyoto.html
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-osaka.html
Limousine bus can be taken from KIX to Kyoto even in midnight.
http://www.kate.co.jp/en/timetable/detail/KY
But the bus goes to Kyoto station only and there is no trains running after the bus arrive in Kyoto station. You should stay near Kyoto station for their convenience.

Hi Takeshi,
So happy to have come to your page. It is so kind of you to share your knowledge and information with visitors like us.
I will be visiting Osaka 23 Nov – 30th Nov staying at Nanbanaka, Naniwa-ku (near nankai namba station ). In between I have booked 2 nights at Kyoto Shi near to Kyoto station (26th – 28th Nov)
We will be bringing 3 daughters.
Pls advise which passess should I get starting from airport to osaka then to Kyoto. We plan to visit Kobe and Nara for day trip but not sure how we should get a round – should we do it in one day or separate days? Or combine with other activities?
In Osaka, I m interested to visit Hozenji Yokocho Alleyway, Osaka castle n . aquarium, food and nice shopping streets. If we have time, a trip to the ramen museum and Nishiki market.
In Kyoto, We like to visit the Kiyonizudera Temple, , Gion Geishas or nice streets and alleys, maybe teapot lanes
In Nara, I like to bring the kids to see the the deers .
As for Kobe, I am not sure if I should go as we probably interested to take at look at the port and visit chinatown and Kobe beef.
Sorry my itinerary is not in order as I am not sure how I get around with the passes as I am quite confused what to do. Appreciate of you can give me some ideas so I can cover these places with the correct passes. Appreciate your reply very much.
As we are bringing kids with us, we will only look at 1-2 best / renowned castles and temples. They would enjoy more on the nice streets , alleys, shops.
Am interested to also try an onsen and cuisine if available / affordable.
Hi Sophia,
You can visit Nara and Kobe in one day if you want. But these places are totally opposite directions. If you can visit these places separately, please do so. If you still have time after visiting these places, you can spend your time in Osaka.
Kansai thru pass 3 days is the best choice to get Nara and Kobe.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-use-kansai-thru-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
You can use one day of 3 days pass for visiting Kyoto from Osaka. But you need to add single fare on the way back to Osaka.
In Kyoto and Osaka, there are some deals available.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-osaka.html
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-kyoto.html
For KIX to/from Namba, single fare or Kanku tokuwari rapi:t ticket is your choice:

Hi Takeshi san,
I have a plan to go to Osaka and Kyoto Oct, could you suggest to me the suitable ways please!
Am travelling with my 2 year old and need advise on the more convenient/comfortable route.
Day 1: Arriving KIX and straight to Kyoto. (ICOCA and Haruka). Stay downtown kyoto.
Day 2: Osaka sightseeing,Kinkakuji temple (the Golden Pavilion),,Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Kiyomizu-dera Temple , GION
Day 3: Kyoto to Osaka- Namba. I have morning half to stay in Kyoto(maybe explore Ginkaku-ji temple area) or half day Nara before heading Osaka namba.
Day 4: Aquarium / Tempozan
Day 5 : Osaka (Instant Ramen Museum, Osaka Castle,Asahi Brewery Tour)
Day 6: Night flight KIX 11pm with kids. Most prob will be at Seacle area so the ICOCA and Haruka will not work?
Thank you
1) ICOCA and Haruka 1 way trip ticket make more sense?
2) Day 2 – what type of sighseeing pass should i get for Kyoto?
3) Day 3 – If I go nara, what pass should I get? And If I do half day Kyoto and half day Osaka, what pass do I get?
3) Day 4 to 5: any day pass?
Hi Ink san,
1. ICOCA and Haruka one way is okay but add Kansai one pass instead of ICOCA.
http://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/icoca-haruka/
2. Use all day bus pass at 500 yen for one day. It covers only bus but you can use Kansai one pass when you take a train.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-kyoto.html
3. You may use Kansai one pass anyway.
4. You may use Osaka Kaiyu ticket on day 4. And you can use subway pass on day 5. But you need to use Kansai one pass too on day 5 because Asahi and Ramen museum are not in subway area.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-osaka.html
You can take Nankai railway as I mentioned from Namba to KIX. If you want to take express train, use Kanku Webtoku ticket and take Rapi:t.
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/airport-access/kansai-kix/how-to-choose-the-deals-for-access-tofrom-kansai-airport.html

Hi Takeshi san
Thanks for your reply.
Now I looking at changing day 3 itinerary to below.
Took some info from hyperdia as guideline.
Day 3
Part 1) Kyoto To Momofuku Ando Instant ramen
KYOTO >JR Special Rapid Service for HIMEJI
OSAKA Eg, [ Arrival track No.5 ]
UMEDA(HANKYU) >Hankyu Takarazuka Line Exp. for TAKARAZUKA
IKEDA(OSAKA)
Part 2)
Momofuku Instant noodle to Asahi Brewery
IKEDA(OSAKA) >Hankyu Takarazuka Line Local for UMEDA
JUSO > Hankyu Kyoto Line Local for KITASENRI
AWAJI > Hankyu Senri Line for KITASENRI
SUITA(HANKYU)
Part 3)
Asahi Brewery to Namba Nankai
SUITA(JR) > JR Kyoto Line Local for NISHI-AKASHI/SHINSANDA
OSAKA Eg, [ Arrival track No.6 ]
UMEDA(SUBWAY) > Osaka City Subway Midosuji Line for TENNOJI
NAMBA(SUBWAY) > NAMBA(NANKAI)
I plan to drop luggage at Osaka station (Locker/bagge service)when coming from Kyoto, after visting Momofuka and Asahi,
Pick up luggage back from Osaka station and head to Namba Nankai.
Will Kansai One pass cover these train/subway lines?
Is this itineary very rush taking into consideration leaving Kyoto 9am?
Will the dropping of luggage at Osaka train station and pick up very hassle from on above plan in terms of distances and conveniences?
Appreciate your advice
Hi Ink san,
Itinerary is busy but feasible. It’s covered by Kansai one pass.
The only issue is storing luggage at Osaka station. If you intend to store your luggage in large size locker, it may be hard to find it. Luggage service is open at 10:00. If you leave Kyoto station at 9:00, you will be Osaka station at 09:30. You need to wait for 30 minutes. Please see the link below to find the info:
https://www.osakastation.com/osaka-station-lockers-and-luggage-storage/
You may go to Namba first and drop off your luggage at your place to stay. You need to make round trip to Namba from Osaka and spend at least 1 hour. But it may be the best solution.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi San
For Day 4
Visit Nara on the way to Namba, Osaka from Kyoto.
Kyoto to Nara 710 yen
Nara to JR-Namba 560 yen
Total 1230 yen
Which train should i take for this route ? Please advise.
Hi Ink san,
Kintetsu railway is very convenient.

Hi Takeshi, great information!
I’m travelling to Osaka, and have 10 days to check out the region.
Planning on visiting Hiroshima/Miyajima, Nara, Kobe, Kyoto, and Universal Studios (maybe 2 days?). I have no particular order of visiting, had figured it would depend on the rail pass…
Last time I only had 4 days and just used the Kansai Wide Area Pass (and paid the difference for the Shinkansen to Hiroshima) but research looks like the Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass will be best to cover that now.
Given we’re there for 10 days, I’m wondering your thoughts on getting a seperate pass to get in from KIX to Dotonbori area (Ibis Styles is the prospective hotel) and only using the JR Pass for the rest of the touring, or perhaps using the JR Pass to get in and starting 5 days from that, and paying a single trip to get back out at the end.
Likewise for around Osaka I was considering using the JR Pass and supplementing with Suica we already have if needed, then when JR Pass runs out, getting something for Osaka only (as planned to do most out of city stuff in the 5 day pass).
Sorry for the rambling, I’m a bit all over the shop as there are so many options!
Hi Nick,
I agree with your though.
You may use Kansai Hiroshima area pass from day 2. You can take Nankai railway to get Namba on day 1 which is not covered by this pass anyway. You can use Suica if you take ordinary train. Otherwise use Webtoku rapi:t ticket is considerable.
http://www.howto-osaka.com/en/ticket/ticket/webtoku.html
In Osaka, there are lots of deals. You may choose one of these after using Knasai Hirsohima area pass.

Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thanks Takeshi!
Was thinking the Yokoso ticket for getting in from airport (probably won’t do much after arriving), and day 2 – am I correct in reading the Subway part will work next day?)
Days 3-7 do Hiroshima, Miyajima, Nara, Kyoto, Kobe, Himeji and other daytrips out of Osaka, then days 8-10 either use Suica or get day ticket (eg Visitors or Amazing Pass) depending on how far we’re going.
Then Rapi:t Webtoku for return to Kansai.
Thanks again!
Hi Nick,
Yes, you can use Yokoso Osaka ticket for day 1 and 2 as you think.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
I have a plan to go to Osaka and Kyoto next June, could you suggest to me the suitable ways please!
Day 1: Arriving KIX at 8 a.m, then sightseeing in Osaka
Day 2-3: Osaka sightseeing, visit some places such as osaka castle, Kuromon Ichiba Market, Instant Ramen Museum, Shinsaibashi and Universal studios Japan. Should i use Osaka visitor’s ticket first day and 2 day Osaka Amazing Pass.
Day 4: Go to Kyoto and Kyoto sightseeing
Day 5 : Kyoto sightseeing
Day 6: Go to Nara and come back to Osaka
Day 7: Go Kobe and may be Himeji and go to Airport at 8 p.m
Thank you
Hi Moon,
You may use Kansai thru pass 3 days for day 4,6 and 7.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-use-kansai-thru-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
Add city deal in Kyoto on day 5.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-kyoto.html
I recommend you to visit Kobe and Himeji on day 6 and go to Nara on day 7. This is easier.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
Thank you for your suggestion. I am wondering whether I can use Icoca card for the route from KIX to Osaka castle on the fist day, and then buy Osaka visitor’s ticket at the same time for Osaka sightseeing. Any better choices to make it cheaper?
On the other hand, If i use Kansai thru pass 3 days for day 4, 6 and 7, this pass will include the subway and city bus passes in Kyoto (day 4), is that true? if it correct, I just add city deal in Kyoto on day 5.
Do you think that Kansai Area pass 4 day will be a good idea in the case I want to combine the first day and 4, 6, 7.
Thank you very much.
Best
Moon
Hi Moon,
You may use Yokoso Oskaa ticket for day 1. It includes KIX-Namba by limited express train and subway pass.
http://www.howto-osaka.com/en/ticket/ticket/yokoso.html
Knasai thru pass covers bus and subway in Kyoto. But Kansai area pass does not. So Kansai area pass 4 days is not recommended.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Tekashi
Need your advise which train to take, direct from Kansai AirPort to Kyoto. From Kyoto to Nara than to Osaka back. All one way.
P’NG
Hi P’NG,
You can take Haruka (KIX-Kyoto), Miyakoji rapid (Kyoto to Nara) and Yamatoji rapid (Nara to Osaka). You may also take Kintetsu railway between Nara and Kyto, Nara and Namba (Osaka). Please see the links below to find more info:
https://jprail.com/trains/sort-by-type/limited-express/kansai-airport-limited-express-haruka.html

Hi Takeshi,
I have already bought Kansai thru pass 3 days. And now, my schedule has changed a liter bit as following. Could you suggest to me which days are suitable for this kind of ticket. Before we want to use in day 4, 6 and 7 and use Kyoto sightseeing pass 1 day in day 5
Day 1-3: Dont change
Day 4: Go to Kyoto from Osaka and Kyoto sightseeing, stay in Kyoto.
Day 5: Kyoto sightseeing and come back to Osaka at Imazato station (this station is far away 40 km from Osaka one
Day 6: Go to Himeiji and Kobe, come back to Imazato sation in Osaka.
Day 7: Go to Nara from Imazato and then go to KIX airport at 8 p.m.
Thank you very much.
Hi Moon,
You should use Kansai thru pass 3 days for day 4,5 and 7. For day 6, you may get Kansai area pass one day.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/how-to-use-jr-west-kansai-area-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
Actually this pass is better to get Himeji. It’s faster.
https://jprail.com/destinations/kansai-area/how-to-access-to-himeji-and-kobe-from-osaka.html
But you need to pay single fare for Imazato – Tsuruhashi which is around 200 yen per trip. Kansai area pass covers only JR line, not subway.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
I be going to Kansai for 6 days, plan to visit Kyoto, Nara, Osaka & Kobe. Should I plan to stay over night at Nara & Kobe?
My plan is first day arrived Kansia AirPort, take a train to Kobe, 3 days 2 nights. Than to Nara for 1 night and back to Osaka.
Lodging which area at Kyoto, Osaka & Nara if you can recommend good and cheap.
Thanks
P’NG
Hi P’NG,
It’s totally up to you. You can stay in each cities or just stay in one place and make day trips. Many travelers do not want to move with luggage many times. They stay in Osaka only and make day trips to Kobe, Nara and Kyoto.
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/7days/how-to-build-the-itinerary-and-choose-the-deals-for-osaka-stay-5-to-7-days.html
I think Osaka is the biggest city and it has many more hotels than Kyoto, Kobe and Nara. Price range is much wider too.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Osaka n Kyoto, should I look for please near the subway?. Any recommendation area I should look at. Thks
Hi S.L PNG,
Shin-Osaka is most recommended in Osaka and JR Kyoto station area is the best in Kyoto.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi takeshi ! Greetings from Malaysia. Just want to roughly tell you about my trips to Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Kyoto.
Roughly I will be visiting this main 4 cities, including most of the famous sight seeing places. Can I ask that what’s the best pass (in term of price and convenient) I can get to visit all these places?
I will be in Osaka in around 8pm in June 10th.. So I am not sure about will my pass will be count from that day or the next day.. because mostly I will just stay in my hotel on 10th, since is already night.. will start my trip on 11st to 17th.. and leaving by 18th..
Please recommend the pass that suit best for me and how should I arrange my trip.. Thank you so much!
Hi Allen,
Please see the links below to find the info about the deals.

There are many deals available but even if you are very sensitive about the cost, I cannot say which deal the best one is for you. You have to make the detailed itinerary before choosing the deal.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thanks for replying Takeshi!
There’s some questions, what if I visit Kyoto first, and back to Osaka.. But I saw some passes have to claim the physical pass on Kansai Airport (same with the actual date that I book).
So is it possible that I claims my physical pass for 15th on 10th in the airport?
Hi Allen,
Yes, you can purchase it and use later day.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi San,

Day 4: day trip to Kobe, overnight in Osaka

Day 8: go back Kansai airport
Can you tell me which pass/tickets train should we buy? Because i confused many name train in Japan.

Aziemah
Hi Aziemah san,
The following deals are recommended:
For day 1, Yokoso Osaka ticket
http://www.howto-osaka.com/en/ticket/ticket/yokoso.html
For day 2 to 4, Kansai thru pass 3 days
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-use-kansai-thru-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
For day 5, single ticket

Hi Takeshi San,
We are visiting in the end of May and the plan is roughly this:
Day 1: arriving at KIX 9am
Train to Kyoto / Kyoto sightseeing
Day 2: Kyoto sightseeing
Day 3: day trip to Nara, overnight in Osaka
Day 4: day trip to Kobe, overnight in Osaka (not sure if going to Kobe or take the day in Osaka, wdyt?)
Day 5: Osaka sightseeing / train to KIX / flight at 22.20
Can you tell me the best option for moving around? Which pass/tickets should we buy? I assume that for the first day we should get ICOCA+Haruka one way to Kyoto, right?
Also, you think that both Nara and Kobe can be seen in +- half day trips, so we can have more time for Osaka?
Thank you!
Ricardo
Hi Ricardo san,
You can have Haruka discount ticket (without ICOCA) and Kansai one pass instead of ICOCA.
http://kansaionepass.com/en/about.html?info=1
You may add all day bus pass in Kyoto.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-kyoto.html
When you need to take train or subway in Kyoto, use Kansai one pass. But only Kansai one pass may be enough to cover both train and bus on day 1 and 2.
Kansai thru pass 3 days for the last 3 days.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-use-kansai-thru-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
You can do Nara and Kobe in half day if you want. It’s totally up to your plan.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi San,
Thank you so much for the fast reply.
So basically I need:
Haruka one way ticket from KIX to Kyoto (how to buy discounted without ICOCA?)
+
Kansai one pass for the 2 days in Kyoto
+
Kansai thru pass 3 days for the remaining 3 days. This one allows to take the trains to Nara and Kobe, as well as Osaka subway and return Osaka to KIX?
Kind regards!
Ricardo
That’s right, Ricardo san.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi San,
