The scene of Gion Festival in Kyoto. It is one of the biggest summer festivals in Japan.

I have received many inquiries about the deal for one way trip from Osaka to Tokyo with stopover at Kyoto. Unfortunately there is no deal to cover whole part of trip. But you can combine some local deals and single ticket.

In this post, I show you the basic 7 days itinerary and the deals that suit this itinerary. But you can extend the duration as many as you want. I also show you how to change or add days in this itinerary too.

Day 1 – Kansai airport to Osaka

There are many deals to get Osaka from Kansai airport. You can use one of those deals. But you have to find the location to stay before choosing deal. If you stay near subway station, Kanku Chikatoku Ticket or Rapi:t Tokuwari Ticket is recommended. If you stay near JR station, ICOCA and Haruka is recommended. Please find more information about the deals from Kansai airport to Osaka at the link below:

How to choose the deals for access to/from Kansai Airport

And also I show many photos in Kansai airport at the link below. You will find the location of stations, bus stops and other facilities.

Kansai airport transportation guide. Find info about station, ticket, airport bus and high speed ferry

If you arrive at Kansai airport in early morning and intend to explore in Osaka after arrival, Yokoso Osaka Ticket is recommended. This deal includes airport access to Namba by Nankai Railway and unlimited trip of Osaka subway. You may find the information about this deal at the link above too.

ICOCA and Haruka includes 1500 yen preload e-money in ICOCA beside airport access ticket. You may use this e-money to ride subway. ICOCA can be used for any trains in major cities, not only Osaka but also Kyoto and even Tokyo. If you stay near JR station and make some trips by subway in Osaka, you can use ICOCA.

If you arrive in late night, like after 22:00, you cannot purchase any deals because the windows are closed at 23:00. Train runs until 23:30. But you might not take even the last train to Osaka if custom and immigration are busy. There are some midnight bus service to Osaka. But the destination is very limited. Please find more information about late arrival in Kansai airport at the link below:

How to access to Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe from late arrival flight at Kansai Airport-KIX

Day 2 – Sightseeing in Osaka

Dotonbori is located near the biggest downtown core of Osaka, Namba.
Dotonbori is located near the biggest downtown core of Osaka, Namba.

The basic choice is Enjoy Eco Card that is one day subway unlimited ride pass. You may get most of places in downtown Osaka by this pass.

Enjoy Eco Card (Osaka subway official site)

If you want to visit many attractions, Osaka Amazing Pass gives you the great savings. It includes 28 attraction’s admission and unlimited subway ride. Please see the following link to get the details about this pass:

Osaka Amazing Pass

But if you use ICOCA and Haruka, you may use ICOCA e-money to take subway, JR trains and other trains. Especially if you want to visit the places outside downtown Osaka, such as Minoo, Momofuku Ramen Museum, subway pass does not cover these places. You need to pay single fare or using ICOCA.

If you want to extend to stay in Osaka

You may add another Eco Card or Amazing Pass. But you may visit other places, such as Kobe, Nara. In case of this, you may add another Kansai area deal, like Kansai Thru Pass or Kansai Area Pass.

The following link shows you the itinerary of stay in Osaka only. But you may get some idea about choosing deal for trip to outside Osaka.

Day 3 – Transfer to Kyoto from Osaka

Three railways, JR, Hankyu Railway and Keihan Railway run between Osaka and Kyoto. You have to find the location to stay in both Kyoto and Osaka. And then you may find which train is the best for your transfer from Osaka to Kyoto. You may find the route map at the link below:

If you use ICOCA and Haruka, you may have some fund left in your ICOCA. You can use it for this transfer.

Using long distance base fare ticket to Tokyo

If your ICOCA is empty and need to purchase a single ticket to Kyoto, you may use one base fare ticket to Tokyo with stopover at Kyoto. Please see the link below to find the rule and condition of JR base fare ticket.

Squeeze Nara or Kobe on the way to Kyoto from Osaka

If you just make a trip from JR Osaka to JR Kyoto, it takes 30 minutes. If you take other railway, you spend a little more minutes. But it never be more than one hour. You may enjoy some more in Osaka or Kyoto. But you may visit other places, such as Nara or Kobe. Nara is easier to squeeze because both Kyoto and Osaka are very accessible to Nara. You may find the access to Nara from Osaka and Kyoto at the link below:

Kintetsu Rail Pass one day is recommended for trip to Nara.

Kintetsu Rail Pass (Kintetsu Railway official site)

You may visit Kobe too. But Kobe is located at other side if you move from Osaka to Kyoto. Please find more information about trip to Kobe at the following link:

Hankyu Tourist Pass covers Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto. This is most affordable one day pass that covers these three cities.

Hankyu Tourist Pass (Hankyu Railway official site)

If you are okay with very tight schedule and want to visit as many as you want, you can do Kobe and Nara in one day. In this case, Kintetsu Rail Pass that I mentioned above and Hanshin Tourist Pass are recommended. Hanshin Tourist Pass covers Umeda, Namba and Kobe. Hanshin Railway connects with Kintetsu Railway at Osaka-Namba station. Many of both Hanshin and Kintetsu trains run each other. Some trains go directly from Kobe-Sannomiya to Nara. This is the easiest route to get Nara from Kobe. If you have these two passes, you can take this direct train.

Day 4 – Sightseeing in Kyoto

Fall foliage in Kiyomizu-dera temple. It is one of Must-See spots in Kyoto.
Fall foliage in Kiyomizu-dera temple. It is one of Must-See spots in Kyoto.

When you visit temples and shrines in Kyoto, you have to take city bus and/or subway. Kyoto city sightseeing card or all day bus pass is your choice. You may find more information at the link below:

Day 5 – Kyoto to Tokyo

Shinkansen is the high speed train service in Japan. Shinkansen stops at Maibara, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Nishiakashi and Himeji in Kansai area.
Shinkansen is the high speed train service in Japan. It connects Tokyo and Kyoto in 2.5 hours.

There is no deals to cover this segment. Single fare and Shinkansen supplement charge is your choice.

If you have already started using the long distance base fare ticket at Osaka, you do not need to purchase a ticket at Kyoto.

If you use ICOCA on day 3 or purchase non JR lines single fare ticket to get Kyoto, you need to purchase single ticket for Tokyo. But if you purchase single base fare ticket and Shinkansen supplement ticket with reserved seat, you can purchase it in advance. You can purchase it even when you arrive in Kansai airport if you want. But if you want to take non reserved seat car, you cannot purchase it in advance. You have to purchase it on the spot.

You may use Platt Kodama for Tokyo to Kyoto instead. You can add single fare ticket for Kyoto to Osaka and other deal for Osaka to Kansai. This way is better if single fare ticket is too complicated for you. Please see the link below to find the detailed information about Platt Kodama:

I recommend you to use reserved seat car. Because many of non reserved seat are occupied when train leave at Shin-Osaka. Especially if you travel with someone, it is hard to find the seats side by side very often. The difference between non reserved seat and reserved seat is only 500 yen. I think it is worth paying extra 500 yen to secure your seat.

Day 6 – Sightseeing in Tokyo

Cinderella's castle is the icon of Disneyland.
Tokyo Disneyland is actually not located in Tokyo. It is located in Chiba prefecture. That is a reason why Tokyo subway does not go there.

Tokyo Metro/Subway deal is most popular. JR Tokunai Pass is also available. Subway covers most of spots in Tokyo but subway lines are so many and very hard to find the fastest route. JR train network is very simple. But you cannot get many places in Tokyo by JR trains, such as Asakusa, Tsukiji. Please see the links below to find more information of these deals:

Single fare is actually the best choice for access to outside Tokyo

Many popular attractions are located outside downtown Tokyo. For example, Tokyo Disney Resort, Ghibli Museum, Sanrio Puroland and many more places are located outside coverage area of both subway pass and Tokunai pass. Single fare is okay for access to these places. And also Yokohama is not in Tokyo and not covered by these Tokyo deals either. Single fare is okay for Yokohama too.

How to extend to stay in Tokyo

If you stay in Tokyo more, you may simply add subway pass, Tokunai Pass or single fare as you need. But if you want to travel to other places in Kanto area, like Nikko, Fuji, Hakone, you may have to get other passes. Please find more information at the links below:

If you travel both Fuji/Hakone and Nikko, Tokyo Wide Pass is a good choice.

Day 7 – Tokyo to Narita Airport or Haneda Airport

Haneda airport is very close to downtown Tokyo. You can take Keihin Kyuko railway from Shinagawa or Monorail from Hamamatsucho. Both stations are connected by JR Yamanote line with Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno and many other stations in Tokyo. Single fare is okay for access to Haneda. You may find some more information about access to Haneda at the following link:

Narita airport is one hour away from downtown Tokyo. There are many ways to get Narita from downtown Tokyo, like Narita Express, Skyliner, Limousine bus and budget access bus. But the deal is very limited. They welcome incoming traveller but not outgoing travellers. Please find more information about access to Narita at the link below:

I have many more sample itineraries. Please check the category, Sample Itinerary.

I hope this post helped you to build your trip plan.

We are planning a trip to Japan in October for 9 days including arrival and departure days. We would like to visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Would you recommend we start the trip at Tokyo, Kyoto and end at Osaka? or Osaka first, then kyoto and end at Tokyo?
What rail passes should we get to cover the whole trip?
Thanks in advance for your advice and recommendation

  2. KP Lim says:

    Dear Takeshi,

Thanks for being so informative. We appreciate if you could help us to check our itinerary. We will be arriving at Narita on the 27 Oct and leaving from Narita on the 4 Nov 2016.

    27 Oct 16 Narita – Osaka
    28 Oct 16 – Osaka
29 Oct 16 -Osaka -Nara -Kyoto
    30 Oct 16 – Kyoto
    31 Oct 16 – Shirakawago
    1 Nov 16 – Tokyo
    2 Nov 16 – Hakone
    3 Nov 16 – Tokyo
    4 Nov 16 – Leaving

Can I ask also whether for my trip I should a JR pass or Osaka-tokyo Hokuriku Arch Pass?

    Arigato!

    Regards,
    KP Lim

    • Hi KP Lim,

I recommend you to use JR Pass 7 days. Because you cannot get direct access to Osaka from Tokyo by Hokuriku Arch Pass. If you use this pass from Narita, you have to change the train at Tokyo and Kanazawa. And also you will spend extra 2 hours.

And also if you use JR pass, you can take Shinkansen to get Odawara on the way to Hakone. You may save a few thousand yen.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • KP Lim says:

        Thanks Takeshi,

we will get the JR pass then. Do you think our itinerary is OK? it is good for us to start from Osaka or you would recommend us to start at Tokyo as we will be landed at Narita?

We are worried as the JR pass only covers 7days and wonder which is the best option?

        Thank you!

        • Hi KP Lim,

If you arrive in Osaka, your trip will be easier and faster to get Osaka. If you arrive in Narita and go to Osaka, you will spend at least 4 hours to get Osaka. However JR Pass will not work if you arrive in Osaka. In this case, you need to use Hokuriku Arch Pass and need to access to Shirakawago from Kanazawa only. And also you cannot use this pass to get Hakone. You can use Hakone free pass 2 days from Shinjuku for even day trip.
          http://www.odakyu.jp/english/deels/freepass/hakone/

Even if you use JR Pass, you may need to use Hakone Free Pass from Odawara.

          Cheers,

  5. June Hsu says:

Hi, thanks so much for those helpful posts!

Our flights will be arriving at the NRD Airport at 5:25AM on May 26 and will leave from NRT Airport at 5PM on June 3. We are planning to visit Hakone for 1 day/1 night and Kyoto for 2 nights. Here is the tentative itinerary:

    Day 1 Arrive Haneda
    Day2-3 Explore Tokyo
    Day 4 Trip to Hakone
    Day 5 Transfer to Kyoto
Day 6-7 Explore Kyoto (and maybe Nara)
Day 8 Transfer back to Tokyo
    Day 9 Depart from Narita

I found your posts very helpful but they are all one way from Tokyo to Osaka or Osaka to Tokyo.

Since we need to return to Tokyo, is it for sure cheaper to get the 7-Day JR Pass? Also, in our case, which day do you recommend we start using the pass considering we will need to get from HND on day 1 and to NRT on day 9? Also, what transportation do you recommend for getting from and to these airports?

    Thanks so much!

    • Hi June,

You may use 7 days pass for the last 7 days of your trip. Because Haneda is much closer than Narita to Tokyo. You can find airport access and subway pass deals available.

        Dear Takeshi,

Thanks so much for your prompt reply on March 9. I am sorry to bother you again.

We have decided to add Osaka to our trip and actually we will now go from Osaka to Hakone to Tokyo.

Day 1 to 3 Arrive in at KIX, stay in Osaka Namba area
        Day 4 Osaka to Hakone
        Day 5 Hakone to Shinjuku
        Day 5 to 7 Tokyo
        Day 8 Depart from NRT

I read your posts and understood that in our case, we should not buy the JR Pass.

I will read more in your website but at this time, I have the following question regarding how to go to Hakone and leave from Hakone. We want to use the easiest way even if it costs a little more.

I think we will need to take a Shinkasen from Osaka to Odawara, buy the Hakone Freepass in Odawara station, then use the Freepass to take bus or train to get to Hakone-Yumoto. When we need to go to Shinjuku the next day, can we buy a one-way Romancecar ticket to go directly from Hakone-Yumoto to Shinjuku? Can we buy it at the Odawara station? It will be a lot easier to get to Shinjuku directly without having to change trains in Odawara and Shinagawa.

        Thanks so much!
        June Hsu

        • Hi June,

          Yes, you are right.
Odakyu railway’s Romancecar is only direct way to get Shinjuku. You can book and pay for Romancecar seat when you purchase a ticket.
You need to pay Romancecar seat fare for Hakone-Yumoto to Shinjuku and base fare for Odawara to Shinjuku. You will buy Hakone Free Pass. It covers base fare for Hakone-Yumoto to Odawara if your Hakone Free Pass is still valid when you leave Hakone.

          • June Hsu says:

            Hi Takeshi,

Thanks so much for your answers on March 14! You are so incredibly knowledgeable!

May I ask you to clarify about buying the one-way Romancecar and how to get from Namba Osaka to Hakone and then from Hakone to Shinjuku.

            1. From Namba Osaka to Hakone:
I believe we will first walk from Cross Hotel to Namba Station to take Midosuji Line to Shin-Osaka Station. It will arrive at 2nd floor. We then walk up to 4th floor to take Shinkasen Kodama 642 to get to Odawara.
Question – where and when do we buy this Shinkansen Kodama ticket? And do we need to reserve seats? Can we do this in advance on-line? Should we buy this when arrive at ITM Airport a few days earlier?

After we get to Odawara, we will need to:
(a). buy the Hakone Free Pass
(b). buy a one-way base fare train ticket from Odawara to Shinjuku
(c). pay for the Romancecar and reserve seats
Question – do we do these at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center in Odawara Station?
I believe I can actually buy the Romancecar online at Odakyu.jp website for 890 Yen. Is it better that I pay for the Romancecar in advance online?

We then use the Hakone Free Pass to take Tozan Railway from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto to reach our hotel, Ichinoyu Honkan, and explore Hakone.

            2. The next day when we are ready to leave Hakone, we can take the Romancecar from Hakone-Yumoto directly to Shinjuku to reach our hotel, Sunroute Plaza.

I think I am gradually understanding the system now but would greatly appreciate your confirmation and assistance!

            Thanks so much!
            June

            • Hi June,

You can purchase Kodama ticket at any major JR stations. Itami airport does not have JR station but you can buy it at JR-Namba station or most of other JR stations in Osaka in advance. Of course you can purchase it at Shin-Osaka station just before taking Kodama. Usually it’s not hard to take a seat on Kodama.

You can purchase all ticket at Odawara station when you arrive at Odawara from Shin-Osaka.

You understand train system in Japan and ready to go!

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com

Wow, Takeshi, I cannot thank you enough for the super prompt response! And thank you for the encouragement. I still need to read more in your website for the other portions of our trip (in Osaka and in Tokyo) and I am sure I will need to ask for more of your advice. I just wanted to first let you know that I am so very grateful to your willingness to help!

              • June Hsu says:

                Hi Takeshi,

Sorry to bother you again. I would like to ask you again about the leg from Osaka to Odawara. I found out there is a Hikari train departing at 10:16AM from Shin-Osaka to Odawara and the next one departs 2 hours later.

Do you think we should purchase the tickets (there are 2 of us) in advance like a couple days earlier in any JR station in Osaka? Also, I suppose we need to specify which train we want the ticket for. What if we miss the 10:16AM train? Can we take the 12:16PM train using the 10:16AM train tickets? What do you suggest? Should we be sure of which train we want and buy the tickets in advance or do you think the 10:16AM or 12:16AM train should be available on the day of the travel (May 29, 2016) so we can just buy the tickets at Shin-Osaka when we want to take the train?

Thanks so much for any advice you have for us!

                June Hsu

  6. May Chua says:

    Hi Takeshi!
Your website has truly been a very good source of information for us and I would like to ask for your advice on the best passes to get since there will be 6 of us traveling with our 70 year old mother.
This is our family’s first trip to Japan and we are looking forward to going around Japan in 14 days starting from Osaka and ending in Tokyo (Narita airport).

We will be arriving in Kansai International Airport 5:00 PM on March 20 and will be staying in Chuo Ku Sennichimae in Osaka.
In Tokyo, we have a booked a hotel in Akihabara. Our flight on April 3 out of Narita Airport is 9:00 AM.

    This is our planned Itinerary:

    March 20 – 24 = Osaka
    March 25 = Osaka – Kyoto
    March 26 = Kyoto
    March 27 = Kyoto
    March 28 = Plan 1: Kyoto – Hakone
    OR
Plan 2: Kyoto- Tokyo (Hakone day trip)
March 29 = Plan 1: Hakone- Tokyo (Gotemba day trip)
    OR
Plan 2: Tokyo (day trip Gotemba)
    March 30 – April 3 = Tokyo

Are these also the applicable passes we should get for our itinerary? I based this on your sample itinerary of 7 days Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone, Tokyo with some personal inputs
ICOCA and Haruka one way ticket
Osaka amazing pass for 2 days to go around Osaka
Base fare ticket from Kyoto to Shinjuku
Shinkansen Nozomi reserved seat supplement ticket from Kyoto to Shinagawa
Base fare ticket from Shinjuku to Narita Airport
Narita Express reserved seat supplement ticket from Shinjuku to Narita Airport
    Fuji Hakone Pass
Limited Express surcharge for Odakyu Romance car from Hakone-Yumoto to Shinjuku

My additional question is we will not be going to Mount Fuji anymore. Just Hakone and Gotemba Premium outlet. Is it ok that we get the Hakone Free Pass for 2 days instead of Fuji Hakone Pass?

I am also thinking of going to Nara while we are in Kyoto as I have read in your suggestions to people visiting Kyoto. Is there a different pass better for us to purchase like the Kansai Wide Area Pass valid for 5 days? is this going to be better value than buying the Osaka Amazing Pass and the ICOCA?

What would be more economical for us? From Kyoto, proceed to Hakone and stay there for 1 night to explore Hakone and next day go to Gotemba outlet or from Kyoto, proceed to Tokyo and then take 1 day trip to Hakone and next day Gotemba outlet?

My family and I would really appreciate your insight and guidance regarding our plans as we are so overwhelmed and confused with the many options available. We would like to make our first trip as smooth as possible.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Sincerely yours,
    May Chua

    • Hi May,

You have picked correct deals. Kansai wide area pass is too much even if you visit Nara. Single ticket or ICOCA is okay to move from city to city.
You may use city deals, like amazing pass or Kyoto city deals.
      http://www.insidekyoto.com/special-kyoto-bus-train-subway-passes

If you want to save your cost, you may drop by Hakone and stay there. Hakone Free Pass is okay to visit Hakone and Gotemba.
If you make two day trips, you will have luggage-free trip. But Hakone Free Pass includes one round trip between Shinjuku and Hakone. So you need to have two deals. You cannot use Hakone Free Pass 2 day for 2 day trips. If you just visit Gotenba on second day, you can use direct bus to outlet instead of Hakone Free Pass.

      • May Chua says:

        Thank you for replying Takeshi.
May I just ask your opinion on this: I have tried to check if this was the route we could take for the part of our trip KYOTO—HAKONE——SHINJUKU

        INSTEAD of
KYOTO to SHINJUKU to purchase HAKONE FREE PASS at Shinjuku station which cost Y5,140

        Y14,110 kyoto to shinjuku station
Y 5,140 Hakone free pass from shinjuku station

can we go KYOTO TO HAKONE via ODAWARA and purchase HAKONE FREE PASS at ODAWARA station
cost Y 12,790 kyoto to hakone via ODAWARA
Y 4000 hakone free pass (bought at ODAWARA station)
Then we use HAKONE FREE PASS to go to SHINJUKU station on March 29.

KIndly give us your opinion if this is correct.
We are very grateful that you are taking the time to help us.

        Sincerely,
        May Chua

        • Hi May,

You need to add 880 yen for Kyoto-Hakone-Shinjuku one way trip because if you purchase Hakone Free Pass at Odawara, it does not include Odawara-Shinjuku base fare that is 880 yen.
And also Hakone Free Pass does not include Odakyu Railway’s limited express “Romancecar” surcharge, 890 yen.
          http://www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/charges/

If you have round trip from Shinjuku, you may have to pay 890X2 = 1780 yen.

Of course you don’t need to take this train. But in this case, you have to change the trains at Odawara even if you take Odakyu from Shinjuku. Only Romancecar runs directly from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto.

          Cheers,

          Takeshi / JPRail.com

          • May Chua says:

Thank you for the reply and for your valuable input.
We were thinking that aside from saving, doing this could also lessen our traveling with our big luggages and also it would be less tiring for our 70 year old mother.

We will be finalizing our plans and we hope you will not get tired of replying to our queries, if we do message you again.

We hope to have a very pleasant and easy travel in your country.

            • Hi May,

              No worries.
I understand that you think about. You should go to Tokyo first and leave most part of the luggage. You can enjoy “luggage-free” day trip to Hakone. Many of tourists have same way of thinking. They want to visit many places from Tokyo as day trip.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com

    Hello Takeshi,

We fly into Osaka on April 10 and fly out of Tokyo (Narita) on May 1. I would appreciate much your recommendation on which passes would suit our itinerary listed below:

    Osaka (3 nights)
    Koyasan (1 night)
    Nara (2 nights)

    Hi,
I will be arriving Kansai airport at 11am in April, and my return flight will be at 11am at Kansai airport

May I know what is the best option for my last day stay?
As your last day stay and departure is at tokyo

    Thank you very much

    • Hi Kevin,

You should go back to Osaka on the day before you take a flight from KIX. 11:00 am departure time is too early to access to KIX from Tokyo. You can take the last Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka and stay in Osaka.

      Cheers,

I will be flying in Haneda and fying out from Kansai.
Is buying the JR pass necessary?

    Day 1- Arrive Haneda.
    Day2-3 Explore Tokyo
    Day 4 Trip to Hakone
    Day 5 Transfer to Kyoto
Day 6-7 Explore Kyoto + visit to Kobe maybe
    Day 8 Transfer to Osaka
