Narita airport is well known as the international airport in Tokyo. But since the government allows Haneda to increase the slot of the international flights, the number of the international flights departs from and arrive at Haneda airport has been increasing in these days.

In this post, I would like to show you the access between Haneda airport and downtown Tokyo. I will explain you about the deals too.

Overview

Haneda is located in the metro Tokyo 23 municipalities. Haneda is much closer to downtown Tokyo than Narita.

You may get downtown Tokyo by Tokyo Monorail, Keikyu railway and Airport Limousine bus. In this post, I will explain about these access between airport and downtown Tokyo and some deals for these airport access. But before I explain this I would like to tell about the procedure of arrival.

How to find the way to get a bus or a train at Haneda airport international terminal

Actually it is quite simple. When you exit from the immigration and the custom area, you will see the hall, like the picture below.

You will find Airport Limousine bus ticket counter on your left hand side right after you exit from the immigration and the custom area.

Airport Limousine bus ticket counter

Just keep going straight from the exit and you will find Tokyo Monorail station and Keikyu station. Those are just a few steps away from.

Tokyo Monorail station will be on your left hand side. (C) JP Rail
Keikyu station will be on your right hand side. (C) JP Rail

It takes less than one minute to get the station from the exit of the immigration and the custom. Many station staffs are there to help you how to buy a ticket and find a direction. And also there are lots of signages in a few languages. It is very travelers friendly.

JR East Travel Service Center (JR Pass and other JR passes exchange place)

JR East Travel Service Center is next to Tokyo Monorail ticket gate. This photo was take in a few years ago. Now this travel center is bigger.

JR East has Travel Service Center at Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport International Terminal station. You can exchange/purchase JR pass, JR East Pass, Tokyo Wide Pass and some more JR deals here. You can start using the pass right after you arrive at Haneda in Japan if you like. Please see the link below to find the detailed information:

JR East official site – Haneda Airport service center

If you arrive at Haneda in very early morning or very late night, you may not be able to exchange/purchase Pass. Shinagawa station or Tokyo station is the substitute choice.

JR Pass and all JR deals cover Tokyo Monorail only. You cannot take Keikyu Railway, Airport Limousine bus and any other bus services.

Tokyo Monorail

Tokyo Monorail

Tokyo Monorail runs between Haneda airport and Hamamatsucho. It takes 18 minutes by the fastest train, “Haneda Express” which stops at a few major stations only. It takes 23 minutes by other monorail trains.

Hamamatsucho is three stations away from Tokyo station by JR Yamanote line. If you want to take the Shinkansen to Nagoya, Kyoto or Osaka after arrival at Haneda, you have to take Yamanote line to get Tokyo station.

You may find the information about Hamamatsucho station in the post below:

If you use JR Pass or other JR rail passes, Tokyo Monorail is covered and you may take this. However if you Keikyu Railway, you can get Shinagawa directly from Haneda and catch the Shinkansen to Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. Even though Keikyu is not covered by JR Pass or other JR deals, please consider to pay extra and get Keikyu railway. It is much easier to take the Shinkansen to Nagoya, Kyoto or Osaka. I will explain about Keihin Kyuko Railway later.

If you take the Shinkansen to get Kanazawa, Toyama, Sendai, Hakodate, you can get Tokyo station by Tokyo Monorail and Yamanote line. You cannot catch the Shinkansen to these places at Shinagawa.

If you stay at the major hotel in downtown Tokyo, you may take Airport Limousine bus. You can get the hotel directly. I will explain about Airport Limousine later as well.

Keikyu is one of the major private railway companies in Tokyo. This railway connects Haneda airport and Shinagawa. It takes 16 to 18 minutes by the fastest train, Airport Limited Express. But Airport Limited Express is operated in daytime only. Most of trains are Airport Express. This train stops all stations between Haneda terminal and Keikyu-Kamata. And also it stops at a few stations between Keikyu-Kamata and Shinagawa. It takes about 25 minutes by Airport Express.

Keikyu Railway also runs on Toei Subway Asakusa line. Please see the route map at the beginning in this post. That means you can get Asakusa and other stations on Toei Subway directly from Haneda. Most of Airport Limited Express and Airport Express go through this subway line.

  2. Yuvi says:

    Hi..Takeshi
I want to ask you about Monorail and Yamanote Line Discount Ticket…if my final destination in mikawashima station…can i used the ticket for entire trip or is there separate fares apply because it’s outside yamanote line?
    Thank u in advance

    • Hi Yuvi,

You have to pay 160 yen extra because as you noticed, it’s outside Yamanote line and you have to pay for Ueno to Mikawashima. You can pay this extra when you get off at Mikawashima. Show your discount ticket and the station staff will correct extra.

      Cheers,

Hi Takeshi, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to help everyone with transportation in Japan.

I have a question I would like to ask. I will be having a layover in Haneda airport, arriving in late morning and have 10 hours until my next flight. That is not a lot of time, but I would like to visit downtown Tokyo to get some nice sushi and maybe do a little bit sightseeing.

After arriving, I will stick my luggage in locker and take the Tokyo monorail from Haneda to Hamamatsucho station. From the Hamamatsucho station, I will find the JR Hamamatsucho station and transfer to the Yamanote loop to go to Shibuya.

Does this sound ok for my layover? Is it enough time, with travel time, traffic, and also check in for my next flight?

Is Akihabara or Tokyo better than Shibuya? Thank you.

    Hello Takeshi,

How about making seat reservations there? I mean, can I make seat reservation for other than JR East line also, like Tokyo to Osaka and Osaka to Hiroshima, etc? And not just for one day (just for the day when I exchange the JR Pass) but for multiple days (until two weeks later).
Yes thank you for the link, you wrote in this article the office only opens between 7.45 and 18.30.

    Thanks in advance,
    Eddy

    • Hi Eddy,

You can reserve your seat at JR East travel center Haneda. You can make all seat booking when you exchange the pass if you want. Whenever I use JR pass, I complete all seat booking when I exchange the pass.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  6. Eddy says:

    Hello Takeshi,

Is it possible to exchange my JR Pass at JR East Travel Service Center at Haneda and then reserve all my train seats there?
Is it possible to buy the 9000 yen Tateyama Kurobe Option Ticket (one way) there also?
What time is the opening time of JR East Travel Service Center there, 06.45 or 07.45?

    Thanks in advance,
    Eddy

    1) For days 3 & 4, I planned on buying the 2day Tokyo Subway Pass. Any suggestions for day 1?

    2) Could I use the Monorail and Yamanote Line Discount Ticket for days 2 & 7? Also, is there a discount pass for the buses in Lake Kawaguchiko area?

    3) As for days 5 & 6, I think it’ll be better to use the ICOCA card I still have last April 2017 and reload it accordingly, right?

    4) As for arriving nearly after midnight, I’d expect to get out of the airport by 0100 the next day. If I can’t find a direct transfer to my airbnb near Komagome Station, I planned on taking the Airport Limousine Night Bus to Sunshine City Prince Hotel in Ikebukuro then take a taxi to my airbnb. Would that be wise?

    Thank you in advance.

    Regards,
    Ria
