  1. Hello Takeshi,

I plan to buy an Ordinary JR pass. I plan to travel from Hakodate to Aomori then to Hachinohe. And i also wish to travel from Hachinohe to Hirosaki. Will the JR pass be eligible for this as well as any other Hayabusa trains?

  2. Hi Takeshi,

I’m travelling from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto via Hayabusa 5 with an Ordinary JR Pass. I checked HyperDia and I’m confused on how much should I pay on top of JR Pass. Should I pay the Gran Class Fee (since the train is a Gran Class according to the timetable) or the Reserved Seat Fee? and what is the difference between the said Fees?

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Joshua,

If you take ordinary seat, it’s covered by JR pass ordinary fully. Hayabusa has three types of seats, ordinary, green and Gran class. If you want to take Gran Class seat, you need to pay full amount ot seat fee. JR Pass covers only base fare.

  3. We are planning to travel from Shin-Hakodate to Tokyo on January 22 on the HB 12 or HB 16. Could you give me an idea of the single ticket (Gran Class) price versus the JR Pass with the Gran Class upgrade? When I look at HyperDia, the fare is 11,560 and Gran Class is 26,720 for a total of 38,280. I’m not sure if I have all the fees calculated correctly.

    Thank you for your help.

  4. I’m planning to purchase GREEN JR PASS and would like to travel from TOKYO TO SHIN-HAKODATE in the Shinkansen(Hayabusa?). I don’t really need to upgrade from green class to gran class. Will I have to pay a surcharge for riding the green class in the Hayabusa even if I hold the JR Green Pass?

  5. Takeshi,
Hi, I’m planning a trip from Tokyo to Hokkaido this summer. Read the posts above in 2011. We also plan to purchase Green car JR Pass and would like to try Gran Class in Hayabusa. How much extra do I have to pay for per person if we upgrade ourselves from Green to Gran from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori?

    1. Hi Aneie,

Additional fee is around 16000 yen. Even Green pass covers only base fare if you take Gran class. Actually additional fee amount is same between Green pass and ordinary pass.

Shinkansen will be extended to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in this March.

      1. Thank you, Takeshi.
How I find the surcharge table of Gran Class? I read Japanese and I’ve read many websites but can’t find it.
Can I assume that child only pays half of the extra charge? My girl is 3 years old, and my boy is 9. I think my girl doesn’t need any JR Pass Green.

        1. Hi Annie,

Only way to find the surcharge of Gran class is hyperida.

If train has Gran class, it will be shown in Seat Fee at Hyperdia.

3 year old is not required the pass. But you or other family member has to share the seat with her. If you want to give her one full seat, you have to purchase child fare pass even for under 5 years.
