Japanese trains suspension due to COVID-19

I will update this post when I receive new announcement from a railway company.

Covid-19, mask

Train operations in Japan are now almost normal.

The government of Japan have lifted the state of emergency in all prefectures. But the trip to Japan is not appropriate yet.

Many railway companies have announced that they will be operating more frequently in June and will resume the currently canceled trains, but the situation is still in flux.

The train information below may change without notice, and the information may be complicated, so please be sure to check the latest information yourself before boarding.

Many inter-city train services are suspended or operated by a fewer cars train set.

I will show you the status of the train operation from the north (Hokkaido area) to south (Kyushu area).

Hokkaido

All trains, including seasonally operated limited express trains, will start to operate on July 1st.

A few trips between Otaru, Sapporo and New Chitose airport are suspended. But most local trains and subway lines are operated as normal in Sapporo area.

The limited express Lilac and Kamui (Sapporo – Asahikawa)

All these following trips will be suspended until May 31st, 2020.

The Hokkaido-Tohoku Shinkansen, The Akita Shinkansen, The Yamagata Shinkansen

The train runs as normal on these Shinkansen lines but some services are suspended.

  • All Gran class services are suspended.
  • All on board sales are suspended.

Seasonally operated train

All trips of the following trains will be suspended until June 30.

  • Frutia Fukushima (Koriyama – Kitakata)
  • SL Ginga (Hanamaki – Kamaishi)
  • Tohoku Emotion (Hachinohe – Kuji)
  • Pokemon with YOU train (Ichinoseki – Kesennuma)
  • Resort Asunaro Shimokita (Hachinohe – Ominato)
  • Sanriku train Miyako (Morioka – Miyako)
  • Resort Shirakami (Akita – Aomori/Hirosaki)
  • Gono line crusing train (Akita – Aomori/Hirosaki)

Kanto area

Most local trains and subway lines are operated as normal in Tokyo and surrounding areas. But some limited express trains are suspended:

The Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo – Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka)

All scheduled train services have been operating from June 1st.

Only these following will operate. The rest of trips will be suspended until further notice.

  • Many trips of the limited express trains for Nikko and Kinugawa onsen are suspended until further notice.

Odakyu Railway

  • All trips of the limited express “Romance Car” for Hakone, Enoshima, Odawara and Gotemba are being suspended until further notice.

Keisei Railway

  • Many trips of the airport express train “Skyliner” are suspended until further notice.

Shinetsu area

The Hokuriku Shinkansen, The Joetsu Shinkansen

The train runs as normal on these Shinkansen lines but some services are suspended.

  • All Gran class services are suspended.
  • All on board sales are suspended.

Seasonally operated train

All trips of the following trains will be suspended until May 31.

  • SL Banetsu Monogatari (Niigata – Aizu Wakamatsu)
  • Kairi (Nigata – Sakata)
  • Genbi Shinkansen (Echigo Yuzawa – Niigata)
  • Koshino Shu*Kura (Joetsumyoko – Tokamachi)
  • Yuzawa Shu*Kura (Joetsumyoko – Echigo Yuzawa)
  • Ryuto Shu*Kura (Joetsumyoko – Niigata)
  • Oykot (Nagano – Tokamachi)
  • HIGH RAIL (Kobuchizawa – Komoro)

Chubu area

Most local trains and subway lines are operated as normal in Nagoya and surrounding areas.

Hokuriku area

All local trains are operated as normal in Kanazawa, Toyama and surrounding areas.

Seasonally operated train

All trips of the following trains will be suspended until further notice.

  • Hanayome Noren (Kanazawa – Wakura Onsen)
  • Belles montagnes et mer (Takaoka – Himi / Johana)

Meitetsu Railway

Many trips of the airport express train “μSky” are suspended until further notice.

Kansai area

Most local trains and subway lines are operated as normal in Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Wakayama and surrounding areas.

Major limited express trains

About 30% of the scheduled services of the following trains are suspended.

Seasonally operated train

All trips of the following trains will be suspended until further notice.

  • The limited express Mahoroba (Shin Osaka – Nara)
  • SL Kitabiwako (Maibara – Kinomoto)

Sagano Scenic train

All trips will be suspended until May 6.

The limited express Haruka (Kansai airport – Kyoto)

The scheduled service runs 60 round trips a day. But 28 trips will be suspended from April 24th.

The rest of the trips are operted by a fewer cars train set.

Nankai Railway, the limited express Rapi:t (Kansai airport – Namba)

The scheduled service runs 68 to 70 round trips a day. But 34 trips on weekdays and 48 trips on weekend/holidys will be suspended from April 24th.

Chugoku (Sanyo and San’in) area

Most local trains are operated as normal in Hiroshima, Okayama, Yamaguchi, Shimane, Tottori and surrounding areas.

The Sanyo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka, Okayama, Hirohsima – Hakata)

About 20% of the scheduled trains are suspended.

Seasonally operated train

All trips of the following trains will be suspended until further notice.

  • La Malle de Bois Setouchi (Okayama – Uno)
  • La Malle de Bois Shimanami (Okayama – Onomichi)
  • La Malle de Bois Kotohira (Okayama – Kotohira)
  • SL Yamaguchi (Shin Yamaguchi – Tsuwano)
  • Maru Maru no Hanashi (Shin Shimoseki – Higashihagi)
  • Ametsuchi (Tottori – Izumoshi)
  • Okuizumo Orochi train (Izmoshi / Kisuki – Bingo Ochiai)

Shikoku area

JR Shikoku will restart most train services that are currently out of service from June 13. All trains are scheduled to resume operation on July 1.

Most local trains are operated as normal in whole Shikoku areas.

The limited express Shiokaze, Shimanto and Nanpu

Some of the scheduled services of the these trains will be suspended after May 16th.
