This itinerary has been created by timetable in March, 2018. If you try to do this plan, please check the updated timetable before you go.

You will start using JR pass on this day. And also you have to purchase Tateyama Kurobe option ticket before you go. This ticket covers all part of trip from Nagano to Toyama via Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. I recommend you to purchase this in advance because you will leave Tokyo in early morning.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route official site

On this day, take early morning Shinkansen to Nagano and travel to Toyama via Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. I show you a sample trip plan below.

Nagano station guide. How to catch the bus to the tourist spots. How to change between Hokuriku Shinkansen and other local trains

You cannot reserve a seat on this express bus. However usually this bus picks up all passengers in Nagano station. You can use Tateyama Kurobe option ticket from this point. You do not need to exchange the pass. You can show your ticket to bus driver when you are on board.

Inside of Ogizawa terminal

At Ogizawa, you will have 15 minutes only too. At this point, you have to go to the window and show your Tateyama Kurobe option ticket. And you will be assigned which trolley bus you will be on. You may not be able to take 11:00 departure. In this season’s schedule, next one is 11:30 departure. If you take this, your time in Murodo will be 30 minutes shorter. But you will still have 2 hours. If you think, it is too late to eat lunch, you can have a lunch time in Kurobe Dam or Kurobedaira. Kurobedaira station offers dining space too.

Day 4 Toyama to Takayama and day trip to Shirakawago

Very popular scene of Shirakawago from Tenshukaku view point

On this day, you will move to Takayama from Toyama, and visit Shirakawago. But there are three choices to get Takayama and Shirakawago. You will take Nohi bus and/or Kaetsuno bus. JR Pass does not cover these bus lines. Please learn more in the link below:

How to access to Shirakawago from Takayama, Kanazawa, Takaoka and Toyama

Option 1, Round trip to Shirakawago from Takayama

This is the simplest plan. You will take Limited Express Wide View Hida to Takayama and drop off your luggage at the place to stay. And then take Nohi bus to Shirakawago.

Sample trip plan
Toyama 08:00 (Limited Express Wide View Hida 6) 09:31 Takayama 10:50 (Nohi bus) 11:40 Shirakawago 16:15 (Nohi bus) 17:20 Takayama

Option 2, Visit Shirakawago directly from Toyama

You will take Nohi bus from Toyama and get Shirakawago directly. This trip makes extra time in Shirakawago or Takayama.

Sample trip plan
Toyama 08:50 (Nohi bus) 10:10 Shirakawago 14:35 (Nohi bus) 15:25 Takayama

Option 3, Gokayama and Shirakawago

You will get Takaoka first and catch World Heritage Bus to get Ainokura, Suganuma area. These places are located on the way to Shirakawago from Takaoka. You will drop by Shirakawago. You will visit all part of World Heritage site. After visiting all places, you will go to Takayama.

Sample trip plan
Toyama (Ainokaze Toyama Railway local train) Takaoka 08:10 (Kaetsuno bus) 09:28 Ainokura 10:38 (Kaetsuno bus) 10:53 Suganuma 11:43 (Kaetsuno bus) 12:20 Shirakawago 16:15 (Nohi bus) 17:20 Takayama

I visited Shirakawago in 2016 winter. Please see the link below to find my trip report.

Trip to Tohoku, Chubu and Chugoku in 2016 winter – Part 6, Takaoka to Shirakawago via Himi line, Johana line and Shirakawago

Day 5 Takayama to Osaka

Preserved path in Takayama. It is very popular tourist district in Takayama.

You may stay in Takayama until lunch time. After lunch time, take Limited Express Wide View Hida to Nagoya and change to Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka.

Sample trip plan
Takayama 13:29 (Limited Express Wide View Hida 12) 16:04 Nagoya 16:19 (Tokaido Shinkansen Hikari 517) 17:26 Shin-Osaka

You can stay anywhere in downtown Osaka. If you have no idea about the place to stay, Shin-Osaka is recommended. Shin-Osaka is not located in downtown core of Osaka. But it is only one station away from Umeda (JR Osaka station) by JR local train. Shin-Osaka is connected with Namba by Osaka Metro Midousuji line. Please learn more about Osaka’s train system in the link below:

Day 6 Osaka to Kyoto to Osaka

Torii gates in Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto

Torii gates in Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto

You can visit Arashiyama, Nijo, Fushimi Inari shrine and Uji by JR pass. But you need to pay extra fare or buy day pass to get other places, such as Gion by bus and subway. Please see the links below to find the detailed information in the following links:

Guide to take trains in Kyoto. How to choose the best route by train to get the major spots?
How to choose the best train pass for sightseeing in Kyoto

I show you one day sample itinerary in Kyoto. This includes most of big names in Kyoto, such as Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Gion.

Sample itinerary
Shin-Osaka 08:16 (Tokaido Shinkansen Hikari 512) 08:32 Kyoto 08:48 (local train) 09:03 Sagaarashiyama

Sagaarashiyama station is located in Arashiyama. It is not located in the center of Arashiyama but you can walk to most of places in Arashiyama. You have 4 hours for sightseeing and lunch in Arahsiyama.

Sagaarashiyama 13:08 (local) 13:24 Kyoto 13:37 (local) 13:42 Inari
After Arashiyama, proceed to Fushimi Inari shrine. Inari station is located just in front of Fushimi Inari shrine.

Fushimiinari 15:08 (Keihan Railway / 210 yen extra) 15:14 Kiyomizu-Gojo (Walk 1.7 km / 20 minutes) Kiyomizu-dera temple
Even if you take a bus from Kiyomizu-Gojo station, you need to walk about 1 km. There is no buses to get Kiyomizu-dera directly. If you do not walk or travel with senior, do not hesitate to take a taxi. It costs less than 1,000 yen.

Kiyomizu-dera temple (walk about 2km) Gion
There are sightseeing spots, like Sanneizaka, Ninenzaka, Yasaka no Tou (pagoda) between Kiyomizu-dera and Gion. I highly recommend you to walk to Gion.

In my estimation, you stay in Kiyomizu-dera about 1 hour (15:45 to 16:45) and spend 2 hours from Kiyomizu-dera to Gion. If you want to visit more temples from Kiyomizu-dera to Gion, I recommend you to shorten the time in Arashiyama or start your trip earlier. Some of temples are closed by 17:00. You should leave Arashiyama by 12:00 and make one extra hour after Kiyomizu-dera.

Gion (city bus 15 to 20 minutes ride / 230 yen extra) Kyoto

You can take Shinkansen, Limited Express Haruka or Special Rapid. Even though Special Rapid is a sort commute train, it takes less than 30 minutes from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka. Of course you can take Shinkansen in 10 minutes from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka.

    Hi Takeshi,

It seems like different websites gave me different response. I am quite confused by what the JR pass covers and was hoping you could help me.

I have the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass and would like to know if it covers the Nohi bus from Takayama to Shirakawago to Kanazawa.

    Appreciate your help, thank you!

    Hi Takeshi,
Could you please advise me on what you think is the best pass/es to buy for a dec 11-20 trip that includes travelling to :
    From Tokyo,
    Kanazawa, Takayama, Shirakawago,
    Hakone
    Wakayama
    FujiQ Highland (haunted house)
    And Meibashi.
Do you think this is too ambitious for that amt of time? Travelling 2 adults.
    Thank you,
    Diane

    Hi Takeshi san,

May I please have your advice/suggestions on my forthcoming visit to Japan from 16th November to 29th November 2018. It is my intention to get a 7-day JR Pass together with some other transportation arrangements for the duration of my trip. Here is a draft itinerary:-

Day 1 (16/11) Arrv KIX at about 5pm. Taking the train to Kyoto.
    Day 2 (17/11) Kyoto
    Day 3 (18/11) Kyoto
    Day 4 (19/11) Kyoto
Day 5 (20/11) Kyoto to Osaka
Day 6 (21/11) Osaka to Hiroshima/Miyajima (Start using JR Pass)
Day 7 (22/11) Hiroshima to Okayama (worth visiting?)
Day 8 (23/11) Okayama to Osaka
Day 9 (24/11) Osaka to Takayama/Shirakawago (Nite in Takayama?)
Day 10 (25/11) Takayama to Tokyo
Day 11 (26/11) Tokyo (May be Yokohama or Kamakura)
Day 12 (27/11) Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen
Day 13 (28/11) Lake Kawaguchiko (Separate ticket)
Day 14 (29/11) Depart either from Narita or Haneda. Flight departs 11pm.

Is my itinerary too rush? Just want to make full use of the 7-day Pass!! I am actually not too sure of the Shirakawago and Takayama part – a little confused on how best to travel from Osaka (to Kanazawa first?) to these places and finally to Tokyo.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    • Hi Nee Juan san,

Your itinerary is okay. The way of using JR Pass is good. You will make a big saving.

Okayama is nice city. But Kurashiki is more recommended. It’s just a few stations away from Okayama.
      https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5750.html

You can stay overnight in Okayama and make a small trip to Kurashiki.

You can access to Shirakawago from Takayama. Kanazawa is okay if you want to visit Kanazawa. Otherwise Takayama is your base to visit Shirakawago.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

Question : Will the 7-Day Hokuriku Arch Pass be the best option for the above itinerary?

    Thank you very much.

    Penny Lee
    from Malaysia

    • Hi Penny san,

First of all, Hokuriku arch pass and Tateyama Kurobe option ticket are the best choice.

All trips from day 1 to 7 other than Nohi bus trip and Toyama Chiho Railway are covered by these two passes.

Reservation is required to take the fastest Hokuriku Shinkansen train “Kagayaki”. You have to book a seat when you exchange Hokuriku arch pass.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

    Dear Takeshi,

We will be in Japan in November. We are flying into Narita Airport and intend to do the full Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route from Tokyo. We would like to see the Snow Wall, Kurobe dam, Kurobedaira, Daikanbo, Murodo and the Mikurigaike pond. Can you advise the best/most economical way to do the full route from Tokyo, and from the Alpine route back to Tokyo? Can you share if we can buy passes for a round trip? Is 2 full days sufficient? We do not intend to purchase a Jr Rail Pass as it is too expensive. Thank you for your advice.

  8. Ainni says:

    Hi Takeshi,

I’m planning my trip to japan next year in sakura season and already booked our tickets. Problem is we bought Osaka in and Osaka out since it is the cheapest flight option in Malaysia. But we planned on touring Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and planning to slip in Hakone as well.

    1. Do you think the above is possible to cover in 9 days? since I still haven’t figure out the places location.

    2. Should we purchase the all JR pass 7 days/regional pass or would it not be economical to purchase it at all? told my friend we should probably buy it, but she disagrees. If you can please help me break down the costs. Thank you thank you!

Thank you very much, this blog saved lots of confused people. Hope you have good blissful days.

  9. Kathryn says:

    Hello Takeshi,

Its my first time to Japan and my hubby and I planning to Japan this year Nov.

Places are Tokyo, hakone, Osaka and Okinawa.

I will skip kyoto( I know its along the way but this round we want to give it a miss)

Do you have any advise how should I plan my route?(I know Okinawa is via domestic flight). After seeing your posts, JR pass is not wise for my route right?

Will you be able to share with me how do I go about for Tokyo, hakone, Osaka and okinawa(sequence is I stated is flexible)

Appreciate if you could email your advise to me.

    Thank you
    Kathryn

    • Hi Kathryn,

I don’t think JR pass is your choice because you will leave for Okinawa from Osaka. You cannot get the worth of JR Pass. Please see the link below. It will include Kyoto but you can remove it and it will be same as your trip.

        Hello Takeshi San,

I have read thru your info. I am much clearer now but may I double check my understanding/confusion:

        1) will be taking romance car from Shinjuku station. Hence am I right to say I will have to proceed to Odakyu sightseeing service centre West exit to buy the Hakone free pass Odawara departure and also Romance car ticket(add on limited express surcharge) all can be done at the Odakyu sightseeing service center at Shinjuku station correct?

        2) Any suggestion do we buy online before reach Japan or I should buy once I reach Japan? Dont intend to buy on the day of departure as worry not available.

        3) Pardon my silly question. Romance car depart from Shinjuku station and arrive directly to Hakone Yumoto station? Then from there i can proceed to all the tourist destinationsuch as taking train to Gora station, cable car or ropeway etc correct?

        4) Since I am skipping Kyoto and following your guide(very helpful indeed), hence after Hakone, am I right to say I should proceed to Odawara Station Or Hakone Yumoto station to take a bullet train(Shinkansen) to Shin Osaka?

        5) Am I allow to buy the 1 way bullet train ticket to Shin Osaka on the day of departure?

        6) Last question, any suggestion which type bullet train from Hakone to Osaka(or only has 1 type)

My apology for the list of questions and pardon me if they sound stupid.. After reading your info shared with me I am having clearer picture But certain part i am kind of confused still.

        Thank You
        Kathryn

Flying into Narita Airport to Tokyo
Tokyo (2 days) ->Hakone (stay 1 day and leave to Osaka)
Osaka (3 days with side trips to Kyoto (maybe Kobe), then I will be flying from KIX airport.

Thank You. Have a great day!
