Takayama is one of the most popular destinations for overseas travelers. Especially spring and fall seasons are very popular since the festivals are held. This city is also known as the gateway to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakawago.
I would like to tell you about the access to Takayama in this post.
Overview
Takayama is a small town but it is one of most popular tourist places in Japan in these days. The old preserved district is busy in all season. Please watch the movie below about this charming old town:
This town is located in the middle of Nagoya, Toyama, Kanazawa and Matsumoto.
Nagoya is most common gateway station to get Takayama. But there are some more ways to access to Takayama, such as Kanazawa, Toyama and Matsumoto. I would like to show you the ways to get Takayama.
Access from Tokyo, Nagoya and many other cities by the limited express Wide View Hida
Nagoya can be reached by the Shinkansen from Tokyo, Shin-Yokohama, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka and many more stations on the Tokaido Shinkansen easily and directly. This route is fully covered by JR Pass.
Most of travellers take the limited express Wide View Hida from Nagoya to Takayama. Travel time is 2.5 hours to get Takayama from Nagoya. This train departs from Nagoya almost every one hour. Please see the post, below to find more information about the limited express Wide Veiw Hida:
And you can get more information about Nagoya station in the link below:
Access from Osaka by the limited express Wide View Hida
There is only one round trip to Takayama from Osaka directly. Please find the timetable in the link below:
Due to COVID-19, it may be operated on a schedule different from the normal timetable. Check the train schedule on Hyperdia.
Hyperdia perfect guide, train timetable and route search engine
If you can catch this train, it is convenient. But it is only one round trip a day. Most of travelers take the Shinkansen to Nagoya and transfer to the limited express Wide View Hida.
Access from Toyama by the limited express Wide View Hida
If you travel in Hokuriku region, you may get on the limited express Wide View Hida from Toyama. Travel time is 1.5 hours. However there are only 4 round trips a day. There are local trains too. But there is no local trains that connects Toyama and Takayama directly, And also it is very slow. Please check the timetable in the link below:
Due to COVID-19, it may be operated on a schedule different from the normal timetable. Check the train schedule on Hyperdia.
Hyperdia perfect guide, train timetable and route search engine
Access from Kanazawa or Toyama via Shirakawago by Nohi bus
This route is not a train trip and is not covered by JR Pass. But Takayama Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass covers this bus service. This is very popular route because Shirakawago is located on the way. If you have a plan to go to Shirakawago, you may consider about visiting Shirakawago and Kanazawa. Please see the link below to find the timetable and the fare of Nohi bus:
The following posts also may help you to build your trip plan:
How to access to Shirakawago from Takayama, Kanazawa, Takaoka and Toyama.
How to access Kanazawa from Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Yokohama, Hiroshima, Hakata and many more places. Which route is the fastest and the cheapest?
Access from Matsumoto by bus
This route is not a train trip and is not covered by JR Pass either. But if you want to access to Takayama from Nagano or Matsumoto, you may use this route. This bus service is also operated by Nohi bus:
This route is not covered by Takayama Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass either.
I traveled from Matsumoto to Takayama via Shin-Hotaka by this bus. Please find my trip report in the movie below. You can find the interior of the bus, the scenery and the bus stops on the way.
Takayama station and Takayama bus terminal
Both the station and the bus terminal are located side by side.
Takayama station is very small. It has only two platforms and three tracks. The station building is very small and it has only one ticket gate.
Please watch the movie below to see whole Takayama station and the bus terminal:
There are many bus services from Nohi Bus Takayama bus terminal. You can catch the bus to Shirakawago, Kanazawa, Matsumoto, Shin-Hotaka at this bus terminal.
I hope this post helped you to build your trip plan to Takayama.

Hi Takeshi-san,
Below is my itinerary for my trip in Japan:
Day 1: Arrive Osaka Kix (stay 1 nite near Kix)
Day 2-4: Osaka > Kyoto
Day 5-7: Kyoto > Takayama
Day 8: Takayama > Osaka
Day 9: Osaka
Day 10: Departure
I would like to travel from Kyoto to Takayama via Nagoya, preferably by LTD. EXP (WIDE VIEW).
Please advise me which type of rail pass is suitable for this trip if I do not want to get the JR pass.
Arigatou gozaimasu.
Hi Serina san,
There is no deal to get Takayama from Kyoto via Nagoya. JR Pass is too expensive. But if you are okay with route via Kanazawa, you may use Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/takayama-hokuriku-area-pass-perfect-deal-to-get-takayama-kanazawa-toyama-shirakawago-from-nagoya-or-osaka.html
If you don’t want, single ticket is only choice for you. But you may use Kintetsu Rail Pass if you want to save your cost between Kyoto/Osaka and Nagoya.

Hi, may I ask if I’m travelling from Tokyo to Takayama what is the recommended JR pass to buy? From Takayama to Jigokudani Monkey Park can the JR pass can be used too?
Thank you.
Hi Sam,
If you travel only Takayama and Jigokudani, JR East pass may be the best choice.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/jr-east-pass-flex-5-days-unlimited-travel-within-14-days-in-eastern-japan.html
Takayama is not covered by this pass, but you can get discounted fare of bus to Takayama from Matsumoto by this pass. Jigokudani can be accessed from Nagano. Nagano can be accessed by JR train from Matsumoto.

Hi Takeshi-san
Thanks so much for your swift respond. I will be travelling from 14th December to 24th December 2015 and arrival and departure airport is at Tokyo Narita airport. My initial itinerary would be as below: –
14th Dec – arrive at Tokyo and plan to take night train or bus to Kyoto. (should I use JR pass?)
15th Dec – will be travel within Kyoto (is it I should buy the Kansai Pass)
16th Dec – will be travel within Kyoto (is it I should buy the Kansai pass?)
17th Dec – will travel to Takayama from Kyoto (is it use JR pass?)
18th Dec – Travel to Shirakawago
19th Dec – from Takayama travel back to Tokyo
20th Dec – Tokyo to Jigokudani (or should I travel from Takayama? Can use JR pass?)
21st Dec – Mt Fuji-Lake Kawaguchi-Hakone-Outlet Store (got day pass for this route?)
22nd-23rd Dec – Travel within Tokyo (what pass should I buy?)
24th Dec – Depart to airport
I plan to fit in Kanazawa, but based on my proposed itinerary as above, is it possible?
Thank you.
Best Regards
Sam
Hi Sam san,
There is overnight bus but it’s not covered by JR Pass.
https://willerexpress.com/en/
Only Sunrise Izumo/Seto is overnight train from Tokyo. But it does not stop at Kyoto. You have to go to Himeji and go back to Kyoto. And also there is no online reservation available for this train. You have to book after arrival. It may be booked out.
In my opinion, if you want to use JR pass, day time train is your choice. Overnight train by JR pass is risky.
If you take overnight bus, single fare (other than Kyoto-Takayama-Shirakawago) and local deals may be cheaper.
In Kyoto, subway pass or bus pass is okay.
http://www.insidekyoto.com/special-kyoto-bus-train-subway-passes
If you don’t use JR pass, you can use Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/takayama-hokuriku-area-pass-perfect-deal-to-get-takayama-kanazawa-toyama-shirakawago-from-nagoya-or-osaka.html
In this case of using Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass, you have to take Kanazawa route anyway. You cannot take Nagoya route.
Jigokudani can be accessed by Hokuriku Shinkansen from either Kanazawa or Toyama. But trip time is not much different from Tokyo.
Fuji Hakone Pass is available for Hakone, Lake Kawaguchi and Gotemba. But it’s not feasible to visit all three places in one day. You will miss many places in Hakone.
http://www.odakyu.jp/english/deels/freepass/fujihakone/
At last, subway pass or Tokunai pass or even single fare is okay for Tokyo.

If you want to use JR Pass, you have to take day time train, you can use JR Pass. Otherwise single fare and local deal is cheaper.
Hi there, I am travelling to Japan on 28th September, arriving in Tokyo on that day and staying there for 4 nights before travelling to Takayama from there and staying there for 2 nights. I am then travelling from there to Kyoto and staying there for 4 nights. We will buy a 7 day JP rail pass which will cover us from the day we travel from Tokyo to Takayama onwards.
I have 2 questions:
1. Which is the best way (in terms of scenary) to travel from Tokyo to Takayama? I can see two options; via Nagoya, and via Toyama. I have read that both the trips are scenic, but i cant tell which would be the best!
2. What is the best way to get from Takayama to Kyoto?
Hi Tom,
If you use JR Pass for Tokyo-Takayama and Takayama-Kyoto, single fare is around 5000 yen cheaper than JR Pass 7 days. If you use JR Pass from Narita to Tokyo and travel outside Tokyo, like Fuji, Hakone, Nikko when you are in Tokyo, JR pass is good choice for your trip. But if you stay in downtown Tokyo only, JR Pass is not a right choice.
My recommended way is Tokyo-Nagoya-Takayama-Toyama (or Shirakawago)-Kanazawa-Kyoto. Kanazawa and Shirakawago are worth visiting. And the best part of scenery is on the way to Takayama from Nagoya.
If you don’t use JR pass and take my recommended route, you can use Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass.

HiTakeshi-san,
I want to spend 4 days 3 nights in Kanazawa, Shiriwaga-Go and Takayama. In your opinion which way is easier for transit and travel time saving:
3 days 2 night in Kanazwa, then go to Takayama via Shiriwaga-Go, then stay in Takayama for 1 night, back to Tokyo the next day late afternoon from there.
or
4 days 3 nights in Kanazawa, side trips to Shiriwaga-Go and Takayama, then go back to Tokyo the last day late afternoon.
Also please advise the transport from Kanazawa or Takayama to Tokyo by JR train. Thanks
Hi Tammy san,
If you want to avoid to trip with luggage, stay in Kanazawa only and visit Shirakawago and Takayama as a day trip. But the bus to Shirakawago and Takayama are not covered by JR pass as you see the post above. If you want to save your cost, stay in Kanazawa and travel to Takayama via Shirakawago. You may stay in Takayama for another night.
You can find the info about transportation to/from Takayama in the post above. You will find the route and info to/from Kanazawa at the link below:
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/takayama-kanazawa-and-shirakawago/how-to-get-kanazawa.html

Hi Takeshi / JPRail.com, Thanks a lot for your helpful advise. I will go to Fjui area first then back to shinjuku from Hakone in the late afternoon. Do you think it is worth it to take the romance car? It might be too late have any good view at that travel time. What is your opinion?
Hi Tammy,
I recommend you to take Romancecar. Otherwise you have to transfer at Odawara and train is a regular commute car. It’s not a good idea to take this kind of car to travel with luggage.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
We are travelling in one day one way from Tokyo to Kanazawa (staying there for 2nights) not on a JR pass until later. What is the most scenic interesting way to get there either by bus or train or part of alpine route ( maybe even a day trip out of Kanazawa? Not sure how much time is needed to see scenery?
Hi Kerrie,
As you see the link above, Kanazawa can be accessed from Takayama via Shirakawago. This is one of the recommended route. As you said, Alpine route is very nice. You can get there as day trip from Kanazawa. But if you want to go through all part of this route, you can get Kanazawa via this route. Take a train from Shinjuku from Shinano-Omachi and go through this route. It is very tight trip but you can get Kanazawa via this route in one day.
The other idea is taking local train from Itoigawa to Toyama. Itoigawa can be accessed by Hokuriku Shinkansen station from Tokyo. The local train go along the shoreline. It is very scenic.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Dear Takeshi-san,
I will travel to Japan for 20 days. My travel plan is:
Day 1 Arrive to Narita airport and stay in Asakusa
Day 2-4 Tokyo
Day 5-6 Nikko
Day 7-8 Mt Fuji, Hakone
Day 8-11 Kyoto and side trips
Day 12-13 Osaka and Kobe
Day 14-15 Hiroshima and Miyajima via Himeji
Day 16-17 Kanazawa
Day 18 Takayama via Shirakawago
Day 19 Back to Tokyo from Takayama
Day 20 Fly back from Narita airport
My questions are:
1. Which JR National pass is worth it to buy?
2. Which local passes I can buy?
3. Do you think my plan works?
4. Can all the destination can be accessed and cover by JR pass?
Please advise which trains I should take to access all my destinations as this is my first time travel to Japan and have no idea about Japan’s transport.
Hi Tammy,
First of all, you can purchase 14 days JR Pass and start to use it for the last 14 days of your trip. I suggest you to switch Nikko (Day 5, 6) and Fuji/Hakone (Day 7, 8). Because many part of the trip to Fuji and Hakone are not covered by JR pass. Nikko can be accessed by JR Pass.
https://jprail.com/destinations/world-heritage-destinations/how-to-access-to-nikko-from-tokyo-there-are-three-ways-from-tokyo-shinjuku-and-asakusa.html
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/fuji-hakone-access-guide-by-train-and-bus-from-both-tokyo-and-osaka-kyoto-nagoya.html
So I recommend you to visit Nikko by JR pass on day 7 and 8. JR pass will be available until the end of the trip. Fuji Hakone Pass is recommended to visit Hakone and Fuji as you see the post above.
JR pass covers most part of your trip from day 5 to 20. But the pass does not cover city transportation, such as subway. Please find more info at the links below:

You may add subway pass or simply buy single fare as you need.
And also Shirakawago is not covered by JR pass.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/tips-for-japan-rail-pass/how-to-get-shirakawa-go-%E7%99%BD%E5%B7%9D%E9%83%B7.html
At last, Asakura can be accessed by Keisei from Narita directly.
http://www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetudou/skyliner/us/
Subway pass maybe added for your stay in Tokyo for day 2 to 4.

Hi, Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you for your reply. I have planned to go to Nikko first as side trip from Tokyo, then from Nikko directly go to Mt Fuji Lake Kawaguchi and then Hakone, stay there for 2 nights, and then from Hakone directly go to Kyoto. I thought it would save some travel time. Would it be a waste of time if I go to Hakone first then I need to go back to Tokyo for Nikko? Which way is easier to travel:
1. Tokyo-Nikko-Tokyo-Mt Fuji Lake Kawaguchi -Hakone-Kyoto or
2. Tokyo-Lake Kawaguchi -Hakone-Tokyo-Nikko-Tokyo-Kyoto.
Is it a very complicated trip If I go to Mt Fuji Lake Kawaguchi area first then go to Hakone? Are there any JR trains available for that?
Please advise me which way is easier to access the destinations and also save travel time and money.
Hi Tammy,
Hakone is located between Tokyo and Kyoto. And Nikko is located at other side of Tokyo. So you are right if you want to save your time.
But the reason why I suggest you to go to Fuji/Hakone first is coverage of JR trains. Once you get in Fuji and Hakone area, JR Pass is useless. I put the link at previous reply but I gave you lots. Now just focus the link below and check the coverage of JR pass.
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/fuji-hakone-access-guide-by-train-and-bus-from-both-tokyo-and-osaka-kyoto-nagoya.html#How_to_use_JR_Pass_Kanto_Area_Pass_or_JR_East_Pass
If you want to travel both FUji and Hakone at same time, Fuji Hakone Pass is most recommended as I suggested. But in this case, you don’t need to have JR Pass because this deal includes return fare to Tokyo. That’s why I recommend you to visit Nikko later than Hakone/Fuji. You can get Nikko by JR Pass much more efficient.
So the choice is yours, time or cost.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi / JPRail.com,
Thanks for your helpful reply. I will take your advise to travel to Mt Fuji/Hakone first.
I plan to stay in Hakone for 2 nights, travel around Hakone and Fuji area and then back to Tokyo. My questions are:
I should visit Hakone first or Mt Fuji first, which way is easier to and from Tokyo?
How can I have luggage-free trip within Fuji area, do you think it is better to book 1 night accomodation in Fuji or there is luggage storage service in some stations? Would you please give me your advise. Thanks.
Hi Tammy,
I recommend you to visit first. You can take the bus to Lake Kawaguchi from Shinjuku in the morning. You can complete this area in this day and move to Hakone. You can enjoy Hakone in next day and you still can see Hakone on day 3 before heading to Shinjuku.
Regarding baggage, I recommend you to pack small for this 2 night/3 days trip. You may leave a big part of your luggage in Shinjuku.
http://www.odakyu.jp/english/center/
Now you will enjoy your trip even with your luggage. Because your luggage will be small. You can pick up your big luggage at Shinjuku after the trip to Fuji and Hakone. And the you can go to Nikko.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi
I am travelling to Japan in Oct 2015.
I am planning to go to Osaka, Kyoto, Takayama, Shirakawa-Go & Tokyo.
Total duration is about two weeks.
I will be landed at Osaka and fly off from Tokyo.
Can you please advise how do I get to each places by train/buses. Japan railway lines are too complicated for me. there is two many routes. Can you please advise which routes are the quickest way you would recommend
Thanks
Hi Stephanie,
My most recommended route is Osaka-Kyoto-Kanazawa-Shirakawago-Takayama-(via Nagoya)-Tokyo. But if want to go to Shirakawago without baggage, my route is not recommended. Because you will visit Shirakawago with baggage. There are lockers and baggage storage. But if you don’t have baggage, obviously much easier. However Kanazawa is very nice city and worth visiting.
It’s so easy to complete this route in two weeks. 3 days is okay for Takayama and Shirakawago. So you still have 10 days left for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. I think you can add some more places to visit. 🙂
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
HI Takeshi
Thanks for your reply.
I will have 12 days/nights for this trip therefore my draft plan as follows:
Day 1: Osaka
Day 2: Osaka
(Use Limited Express Thunderbird from Osaka to Kyoto)
Day 3: Kyoto
Day 4 :Kyoto
(Use Limited Express Thunderbird from Kyoto to Kanazawa)
Day 5: Kanazawa
Day 6: Shiriwaga-Go (Day Trip from Kanazawa)
(Use Nohi Bus from Kanazawa to Shiriwaga-Go)
Day 7: Takayama (Day Trip from Kanazawa)
(Use Nohi Bus from Kanazawa to Takayama)
Day 8-12: Tokyo
(Use Hokuriku Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Tokyo)
Can you please advise if my draft plan above is working realistically ? or you think there would be a better way ? I chose to stay in Kanazawa and do day trip from there to Shirikawago & Takayama so that I dont have to travel with baggages.
Takeshi, which pass should I buy for the whole trip ?
Much appreciated for your helps
Hi Stephanie,
I don’t see any issues on your itinerary. You can go for it.
If you have something different, you can take a train between Takayama and Kanazawa via Toyama. You have to transfer the trains at Toyama but you will see the different scenery. If you take a bus to/from Takayama via Shirakawago, you will see same scenery four times between Shirakawago and Kanazawa.
You can use Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass 5 days for day 4 to 8. There is no options for covering whole part of your trip.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/takayama-hokuriku-area-pass-perfect-deal-to-get-takayama-kanazawa-toyama-shirakawago-from-nagoya-or-osaka.html
This deal covers Hokuriku Shinkansen between Kanazawa and Toyama. But it does not cover reserved seat. Only non reserved seat can be taken by this pass. But the fastest train “Kagayaki” of Hokuriku Shinkansen does not have any non reserved seat. So when you go to Tokyo from Kanazawa by Hokuriku Shinkansen, you have two choices, paying full fare for Kanazawa to Tokyo or taking non reserved seat of “Tsurugi” or “Hakutaka” to Toyama and transfer to Kagayaki at Toyama. If you transfer at Toyama, you can use Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass for Kanazawa-Toyama segment. You can save appx 1500 yen.
You have to pay single fare for at least Toyama-Tokyo anyway.
For Osaka and Kyoto, the following link may help you to find the deal:
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/7days/how-to-build-the-itinerary-and-choose-the-deals-for-osaka-stay-5-to-7-days.html
In Tokyo, subway or other local deals are okay.

Plan going to Takayama – Shirakawago for 4-5days.
if i plane to take train from Haneda to Nagoya, then book 5days JR-Hokuriku ticket.
is it the trip deal.
Hi Kai,
What are you going to do after Takayama/Shirakawago? Are you going back to Tokyo or going to Osaka?
I need to see the whole part of your itinerary before choosing the deal.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Dear Takeshi-san,
Plan: Tokyo -Nagoya – Takayama – Shirakawago – Kanazawa – Tokyo.
I will reach Haneda on 24/10/15 11pm. so will go to Nagoya on 25/10/15 to heading to takayama.
Tokyo – Nagoya – single trip JR train (25/10/2015)
Nagoya – Takayama – Shirakawago – Kanazawa – Nagoya – Hokuriku pass (26/10/15-30/10/15)
Nagoya – Tokyo – single trip JR train (31/10/2015)
Tokyo city- 2days Tokyo subway ticket (31/10/15 – 1/11/15)
My return flight at Haneda.
thank you
Hi Kai san,
JR Pass 7 days is better choice for you. It covers all train trips from Oct 25 to 31. You have to add bus fare for trip to Shirakawago. But JR pass + bus fare is cheaper than single fare (Tokyo – Nagoya round trip) + Takayama Hokuriku Pass. If you use JR pass, you can go back to Tokyo from Kanazawa directly by Hokuriku Shinkansen.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/tips-for-japan-rail-pass/how-to-get-kanazawa.html
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Hi Takeshi-san,
So, if i buy 7day national pass then it will include Kanazawa – Tokyo by Hokuriki Shinkansen too?
thank you.
regards,
Kai Seong
Dear Takeshi-san,
As i checked on Hyperdia, round trip Tokyo – Nagoya – JPY 12520.
So, if JPY12520 + 13500=26020
7day national pass =29110
Is my statement correct?
rgds,
Seong
Hi Seong,
JPY 12520 is only base fare. If you take Shinkansen, you have to pay another JPY 4500 one way. If you take a local train from Tokyo to Nagoya, the fare is only 6260 yen one way. But it’s local commute train and not realistic to move from Tokyo to Nagoya by this kind of trains because of very slow and many transfers.
Hokuriku Shinkansne is covered fully by JR pass. You can get back to Tokyo from Kanazawa directly by JR pass.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Dear Takeshi
Is there a direct bus from Nagoya airport to Takayama?
Thank you.
Hi Rosne,
No. You have to take Metetsu train to get Nagoya and transfer to the train.

Takeshi-san,
I’m going to stay in Kanazawa, and make a 1 day trip to both Shirakawago & Takayama.
I understand that the most efficient way to go there is by taking the Nohi Bus.
But when I view their schedule, seems like they only stop at Shirakawago for 45 minutes. I’m afraid it’s not enough time to go explore the World Heritage place.
Can I buy separate bus tickets as for; Kanazawa-Shirakawago, Shirakawago-Takayama, and Takayama-Kanazawa ?
Thank you.
Regards,
Felicia
Hi Felicia,
45 minutes is way short to explore Shirakawago. I think 2 hours is minimum to see there.
So you can purchase separate tickets for these three segments. The reservation is required for most of bus service.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Thank you so much! 🙂
No worries, Felicia.
Enjoy your trip.
