Spring is the best season to visit Japan because of the cherry blossom. And also between late April and the beginning of May is one of the busiest period. It is called “Golden Week” in Japan. April 29, May 3, 4, and 5 are National holidays. I recommend you to avoid travelling on those days. It’s not surprised if trains are full.
JR Group operate lots of seasonal trains during all spring season. Especially JR Group add lots of the extra trains on those above holidays. It is too many to introduce all seasonal trains. So I pick up the popular trains and are operated in the popular spot.

Hi,
May I know where can I purchase the Overnight Limited Express Hokutosei train ticket?
depart date: 7 July 2015 from Sapporo to Ueno.
Thank you very much.
Hi Hyoioni,
There is no way to book online. Basically you cannot purchase and book it before you arrive in Japan. But if you try to book after you arrive in Japan, it’s no chance. It is super hard to book this train now because many train fans tried to take this train before this train will be discontinued.
Tickets will be on sale on 7 June at 10:00 am.
Some travel agent maybe book this. Please try to find the nearest Japanese travel agent. JR Pass dealer may be able to take it. You may find the dealer list at the link below:

Good luck!

おはようございます Takeshi-san!
My name’s Tomek and I’ll be in Japan for my honeymoon in June.
By now I have most of the hoyels booked, but I wonder about the trains and transportation. The biggest concern is to take 7 or 14 day Jr Pass. My honemoon will take place from 12th to 28th of June and the plan is:
12-18th of June we are in Tokyo.
18th to 24th of June we are in Kyoto, and from Kyoto we want to go for day-trips to Nara, Osaka, Himeji and Hiroshima.
24-26th of June we are in Nagano.
The last days again in Tokyo or day-stay in Karuizawa, I haven’t decided yet.
The issue is that with 14 day pass I will validate from 14 to 28th of June, and with 7 day i don;t know. I wonder if it’s good to take 7 day pass and buy single tickets then or take more expensive 14 day pass. Please help mi with this one.
Greetings! tomek
Hi Tomek san,
7 days pass is too short for your trip. Because Tokyo – Kyoto (Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima) – Nagano – Tokyo must be covered by pass. If you compete this in 7 days, you will get the biggest savings. But you will spend 9 days for this part of your trip. If you go for 14 days pass, you still get some savings. it’s much better option than 7 days + single fare. And it’s much more flexible. You can make some more day trips when you will be in Tokyo if you change your mind.
Enjoy your honeymoon trips!

Hi Takeshi,
I’ve recently seen the JR Rail released by JR Hokkaido regarding the Norokko. However, there’s a quote mentioning “NOR — Furano Biei Norokko Train (Asahikawa – Biei – Furano / Operating Date: 2015/6/6,7,13,14,20,21,27-30)”. I am travelling to Furano on the 10-Jun and hoping to get to the Lavender farms via the trains if possible. Could you make some suggestions if the train is operating towards the Lavender station or the trains are not making stops at the Lavender station? Thanks.
Hi Jason,
Unfortunately Lavender station is set for only this train. All other trains, even local train, do not stop at this station. This train does not run on Jun 10. So you cannot get off this station.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Do you know the seasonal days of operation (if any) for Akebono?
Hi Duncan,
I haven’t got any official announcement yet. But I think it’s done completely. I did not run in even this past New Years Holidays.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Many thanks – I rather feared that. I have used it many times; last was March 2014, just before the end of regular service – I shall miss it.
No problem, Duncan.
I will miss these trains too.
Cheers,
