Access to Tottori from Osaka, Kobe and Himeji with no extra charge by JR Pass. Limited Express Hamakaze

Limited Express Hamakaze (はまかぜ) connects Osaka (大阪) with Tottori (鳥取) Kasumi (香住) and Hamasaka (浜坂). Even though there is only one round trip, Hakamaze is only train that connects Osaka with Tottori directly by Japan Rail Pass or other JR rail passes without any extra charge. Actually the primary train goes to Tottori from Osaka is Limited Express Super Hakuto. This train is much more frequent and much faster than Hamakaze. But this train goes through Non JR line, Chizu Kyuko Railway. Therefore you have to pay extra charge if you want to take this train by Japan Rail Pass or other JR passes. Please check the post, The fastest access to Tottori from Osaka, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, Limited Express Super Hakuto to get the details.

As I mentioned above, this train, Limited Express Hamakaze can be used by Japan Rail Pass with no restriction. Let’s see about route, schedule and accommodations.

Route, timetable and travel time

There are 3 round trips and one of each trip to Tottori, Hamasaka and Kasumi. You can find a part of the timetable of Hamakaze at JR West timetable.
But this timetable does not show anything between Kinosaki-Onsen and Tottori. But Hamakaze goes far from Kinosaki-Onsen. As of October, 2012, timetable is for the section between Kinosaki-Onsen and Tottori is the following:

Train# Osaka Kinosaki
Onsen
Kasumi Hamasaka Tottori
#1 09:38 12:27 12:52 13:12
#3 12:17 15:09 15:34
#5 18:05 21:11 21:37 21:57 22:30
Train# Tottori Hamasaka Kasumi Kinosaki
Onsen
Osaka
#2 06:03 06:34 06:54 07:18 10:16
#4 13:27 13:47 14:13 17:05
#6 16:49 17:16 20:05

As you saw the timetable above, Hamakaze is operated between Osaka and Tottori in early morning and late night only. If you need to go to Tottori, you have two choices. First one is getting on Super Hakuto. Second one is getting on local train. If you get on local train, you don’t have to pay extra if you use Japan Rail Pass. However local train is not operated very frequently.

ex) In case of arrival by Hamakaze #3 at Hamasaka station
Arrival at Hamasaka 13:12
Departure at Hamasaka by local train 14:22
Arrival at Tottori 15:09

You have to wait for more than 1 hour and you spend 47 minutes. If you take Hamakaze #5 to Kasumi, it is same situation. Is this acceptable for you? If you cannot, get on Super Hakuto. You have to pay extra to get on Super Hakuto if you use Japan Rail Pass. But there is no express trains on that section except Hamakaze. The extra charge for Super Hakuto on Japan Rail Pass is 1,770 yen (base fare 1,260 yen + express surcharge 510 yen). Please see the post, The fastest train access to Tottori from Osaka and Kyoto. Limited Express Super Hakuto to get the details.

Limited Express Hamakaze makes a stop at these following stations:
Osaka (大阪) – Sannomiya (三ノ宮) – Kobe (神戸) – Akashi (明石) – Himeji (姫路) – Fukusaki (福崎) – Teramae (寺前) – Ikuno (生野) – Wadayama (和田山) – Yoka (八鹿) – Ebara (江原) – Toyooka(豊岡) – Kinosaki-Onsen (城崎温泉) – Takeno (竹野) – Kasumi (香住) – Hamasaka (浜坂) – Iwami (岩美) – Tottori (鳥取)

  1. Hi,

I will be going to ToTTori from Himeji by JR Kansai Wide , is there an extra charge?
My Route is Himeji Kamigori (Super Inaba) Tottori

    Thanks

  2. Hello! We’re planning to go to Tottori from Kyoto. Our selected schedule from Hyperdia is as follows:

    Kyoto – ShinOsaka (JR)
    ShinOsaka – Aioi (Sanyo Shinkansen)
    Aioi – Kamigori (JR)
Kamigori – Tottori via LTD. EXP SUPER INABA 1.

    My question are:
1.) Is it fully covered by Kansai Wide Area Pass? If not, how much extra should we pay?
2.) Are there other routes we could use to fully utilize the pass?

Thanks and have a nice day!
