Himeji castle is National Treasure, National Heritage Building, one of the best 100 castles in Japan and UNESCO World Heritage Site. I think this castle is most well known and popular castle in Japan and I believe everybody agree with me.
You can travel Himeji from Osaka as easy day trip. In this post, I would like to explain about the access to Himeji by several kinds of trains. Since Kobe is located on the way to Himeji, I also mention about Kobe. You can drop by when you go to Himeji easily.
Route and access
Let’s see the location map. Please see the map below:
There are three ways to get there.
The Shinkansen — trip time 30 to 45 minutes (from Shin-Osaka) / 3,130 yen (base fare and non reserved seat surcharge by Hikari, Sakura or Kodama)
JR Special Rapid train — average trip time 61 minutes (direct access from Osaka/Umeda) / 1,490 yen fare
Hanshin-Sanyo Railway Limited Express from Umeda — average trip time 95 minutes (direct access) / 1,280 yen fare
Shinkansen is the fastest train obviously, but expensive. And you have to go to Shin-Osaka to catch Shinkansen. Let’s see the available deals and frequency.
Shinkansen
Shinkansen is the fastest way to get Himeji if you can catch the fastest run. There are several kinds of Shinkansen train on this segment, Nozomi, Mmizuho, Hikari, Sakura and Kodama. Kodama stops at all stations and takes sometimes 45 minutes to get Himeji from Shin-Osaka because Kodama waits for other faster trains on the way to Himeji.
If you take this “slow” train Kodama, it’s not much different from JR Special Rapid train. Because you will spend 5 minutes to get Shin-Osaka from Osaka by local train. And you will spend another 5 minutes at least to transfer from local train to Shinkansen. It will be 55 minutes and not much different from Special Rapid trip time 61 minutes.
If you intend to use Japan Rail Pass, Kansai WIDE Area Pass or Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass, Sanyo Sanin Area Pass, Shinkansen surcharge is covered by these deals.
*Kansai WIDE Area Pass and Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass cover only non reserved seat.
But if you will purchase single ticket, the fare is more than double of Special Rapid train. I don’t think it is not worth taking Shinkansen for such a short trip. Special Rapid is better train service in my opinion.
JR Special Rapid train
This train is most popular and the fastest commute service between Osaka and Himeji. You can catch this train by base fare only. And if you use Kansai Area Pass, this train is your choice. Of course other rail passes, Japan Rail Pass, Kansai WIDE Area Pass and Sanyo Area Pass cover this train too. Please see the link below to get more details about Special Rapid train service.
Most convenient and the fastest train among Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. Special Rapid Service
If you purchase single ticket from Osaka to Himeji, the fare is 1,490 yen. If you purchase Kansai Area Pass one day, the price is 2,200 yen (online advance purchase price). Kansai Area Pass is the best deal to Himeji from Osaka by Special Rapid train.
Hanshi/Sanyo Railway’s Limited Express
Hanshin Railway is one of major private railway companies between Umeda and Sannomiya, Motomachi in Kobe. And also Hanshin Railway connects Osaka-Namba station with Amagasaki.
Sanyo Railway connects Himeji and Kobe area. Both Hanshin and Sanyo go through each other and both companies operate direct train service from Umeda to Himeji. But this is much slower than JR Special Rapid train. You will spend at least 30 minutes more than Special Rapid train if you move from Umeda (same location as JR Osaka station) to Himeji.
If you use Kansai Thru Pass, you cannot take any JR trains. Hanshin-Sanyo direct train is only you choice. The round trip fare is 2,560 yen. It is worth using Kansai Thru Pass for the trip to Himeji from Umeda.
If you stay in Namba, you can catch Hanshin Railway train at Osaka-Namba station. The transfer at Amagasaki station is usually same platform and very easy. If you use Kansai Thru Pass, you can take subway Midousuji line to Umeda and transfer to Hanshin Railway at Umeda. In this case, you have to exit subway station and enter Hanshin Railway station. Transfer at Amagasaki is much easier than changing train at Umeda. And the difference of trip time between Hanshin-Sanyo and JR is smaller if you start from Namba. As I mentioned, JR Special Rapid is much faster but you need to get Umeda by subway from Namba. If you take Hanshin railway, you can change trains at Amagasaki and it is transfer in the station. JR Special Rapid is still faster but the difference is 10 to 15 minutes. It is not a big issue.
This train is “Limited Express” but no express surcharge is required. This is same type of trains as Special Rapid.
In the map above, there is Hankyu Railway between Umeda and Sannomiya. You can take this train by Kansai Thru Pass too. But any Hankyu trains do not go through Sanyo Railway line. So it is not convenient and not recommended either.
Himeji station
Sanyo-Himeji station is located at the north side of JR Himeji station. It is 20 minutes away from Himeji station by walk. Please find the detailed about Himeji station and how to access to Himeji castle at the link below:
Himeji station guide. How to get Himeji castle from the station
Drop by Kobe
Sannomiya is the core place of Kobe. You can take any train other than Shinkansen to drop by Kobe. But if you go to Kobe only, any kinds of passes do not work. Single ticket is much cheaper than any deals.

We are arriving in Osaka on a cruise ship. We want to visit Himeji Castle and then Kobe and back to Osaka. What do you recommend as the best way to go by train? We dock from 7:00 to 11:00 (23:00). Thank you.
Hi Ivy,
As you read the post above, JR train, Special Rapid is very common way. You can use Kansai area pass one day to save your cost.

Hello Takeshi san,
I will be arriving in KIX on 9th November and stay in Osaka for 1 night before heading the next day in the late afternoon to Kyoto.
While transit in Osaka I would like to visit Kobe and if possible Himeji Castle too.
What do you think ? since I have to be in Kyoto around 4 o clock in the afternoon ?
Should I buy Kansai area pass to use it to Kobe and Himeji and around Kyoto since i will stay 5 days in Kyoto ?
Does Kansai Area Pass cover Shinkansen from Osaka to Kobe n Himeji ?
Thanks for you time
Hi Maria san,
Kansai Area Pass is the best choice for trip to Kobe and Himeji. But this pass does not cover Shinkansen. You have to take Special Rapid train.
If you stay in Kyoto, you don’t need Kansai area pass any more. One day Kansai area pass is okay. You may choose city deal for Kyoto.

No worries, Maria.

Hi Takeshi-san! I will be staying in Kyoto and planning a day trip to Osaka -> stopping by Himeji Castle on the way back. What train passes do you recommend? Thank you very much!
Hi Stephanie,
Kansai Area Pass is most recommended.

Hello Takeshi-san,
I will be using Hankyu 2-day Tourist Pass for my travel on non-consecutive days from Osaka/Umeda to Kobe, and to Kyoto.
My only question is whether there are Hankyu trains from Rokko or Sannomiya/Kobe to Himeji . If one has to take a bus from Himeji station to castle is that also covered by the Hankyu pass ?
Hi Jairam san,
Hankyu Tourist Pass covers to Kobe-Sannomiya only. You have to pay extra for Kobe-Sannomiya to Himeji. The extra fare is around 1000 yen for one way. It’s not a good idea to use this pass for the trip to Himeji. You may use Kansai thru pass or Kansai area pass.

https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-use-kansai-thru-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
If you choose Kansai thru pass, you should give up to use Hankyu Tourist Pass because it’s 2 days or 3 days only. If you choose Kansai area pass, you can use one day Hankyu Tourist Pass one day.
Himeji castle is located within walking distance from the station.

Takeshi-san,
Good evening, would appreciate your advice:
Day 1 (Friday)- Travel from Osaka to Himeji/Rokko/Sannomiya and back
Day 3 (Sunday)- Travel from Osaka to Nara and back
Day 4 (Monday)- Travel from Osaka to Kyoto and back
Is it better to get Kansai Area Pass or Kansai Thru Pass.? I presume 1-day pass for Day 1, and 2-day pass for Days 3 and 4.
Hi Tara san,
Kansai area pass 1 day and Kansai thru pass 2 days are the best choice.
You also can use Kansai thru pass 3 days for these three days. This pass can be used in unconsecutive days.
However as I mentioned in the post above, trip time to Himeji is much longer than JR trains. But the cost is much cheaper than using two different passes.

Hello Takeshi/san,
I want to visit only Mt Rokko and Arima from Osaka. What is the best ticket to get and most direct route please ? Thank you.
J
Hi Jay san,
I think you have already seen this:
https://jprail.com/destinations/kansai-area/osaka-kyoto-kobe-and-nara/guide-to-take-trains-in-kobe-how-to-choose-the-best-route-by-train-to-get-the-major-spots.html#Arima_Onsen_and_Mount_Rokko_deals
Arima Rokko one day pass, Hanshin railway version is your choice.
If you go to Rokko first, you can access from Hanshin railway Mikage station. If you go to Arima first, you can get there from Sannomiya.

Hi Takeshi,
May I ask as to how different is the Kansai thru pass and the Kansai Area Pass. Are both using the same trains and platforms?
Hi Chelsea,
Kansai Area Pass covers only JR trains and Kansai thru pass covers non JR trains. Please see the link below:

Hello Takeshi-san,
Can you please tell me which would be the best pass to purchase for my itinerary?
Day 1. KIX to Himeji to Kyoto (Gion) to Fushimi Inari
Day 2. Walking around East Kyoto
Day 3. Arashiyama, Nishiki Market then to Nijo Castle
Day 4. Kyoto (Gion) to Osaka Namba to KIX
Thank you
Hi Irene san,
You have two choices.
(1) Kansai thru pass 3 days for day 1, 2 and 3
(2) Kansai area pass 1 day for day 1 and Kansai thru pass for day 3 and 4

https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-use-kansai-thru-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html
Plan 1 is cheaper than plan 2. But trip time to Himeji is much longer if you take plan 1. Because it does not cover JR trains as you read the post above. But it covers everything.
If you take plan 2, the cost is higher but you can get Himeji much earlier. However you have to add single fare to get Gion from Kyoto because you have to take a bus or Non JR train. And Keihan railway is the best way to get Fushimi from Gion. But it’s not covered by Kansai area pass too.
Please see the links below to find the coverage of Kansai thru pass and Kansai area pass in Kyoto and Osaka.

Hi Takashi san,
I’m visiting Japan next week and I want to do Himeji as a day trip out from Osaka. I will have a Pasmo card on me – will that be any use in paying for the ticket? I am thinking to get the JR Special Rapid, but I don’t quite understand from your post where the train departs from. Does it leave from Shin-Osaka station, or…?
Hi Shannon san,
You can use Pasmo to take a train. Now all these cards, Pasmo, ICOCA, Suica and many others can be used in each areas.
Special rapid can be taken at Shin-Osaka and Osaka. Please find more info at the link below:

Hello Takashi san,
I want to travel from Osaka to Himeji on the JR special rapid train. In one paragraph you mentioned that it is cheaper to go to buy a Osaka-Sannomiya ticket and paying the rest upon arriving in Himeji than buying the whole Osaka-Himeji ticket. Could you explain in detail on how to pay the rest? Do I pay it at the counter before I go out of the gates? Does this ‘cheat’ work on the way back to Osaka too?
Sincerely,
Vivien
Hi Vivien san,
Actually this way is recommended for resident. For overseas tourist, Kansai area pass one day is most affordable.
If you want to use the way for the resident, you need to get off at Sannomiya and purchase another ticket for Sannomiya to Himeji. It will be 110 yen cheaper than Osaka-Himeji ticket. But you have to get off and enter again at Sannomiya.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you for the explanation, Takashi san 🙂
No problem, Viviven san.
