E2 series (left) and original fleet 200 series (right). All 200 series were retired already.
Tohoku Shinkansen and Joetsu Shinkansen share the track between Tokyo and Omiya. So some types of trains are used on both Tohoku and Joetsu. I show you several types of trains that are used on Tohoku or Joetsu Shinkansen. If you are looking for the general information about these Shinkansens, please read Tohoku Shinkansen or Joetsu Shinkansen.

E4 series

Newer double decker train E4 series
This double decker train is newer than first ever Shinkansen double decker fleet E1 series. This train is called “Max” (=Multi Amenity Express) as well. This series is used for both Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen, such as Max Yamabiko, Max Nasuno, Max Toki and Max Tanigawa. This series has 3+3 seat configuration in upper cabin on car#1 to 3. This is the worst seat in entire Shinkansen trains. These cars are usually used as Non Reserved seat. This series is operated by 1 unit 8 cars formation basically. But in the peak season, it is operated 2 units combination 16 cars train formation. In this case, there are 3+3 seat on Car#1-3 and 9-11. When you take “Max” train, please be careful and try to get a reserved seat. On Joetsu Shinkansen, there are very high sound proof walls beside most part of the track. If you want to enjoy the scenery, take a seat on upper cabin. You can never enjoy the scenery from lower cabin.
