When you go to southeastern Hokkaido, The limited express Super Ozora and the limited express Super Tokachi take you there. Super Ozora connects Sapporo and Kushiro. Super Tokachi connects Sapporo and Obihiro. These trains are very popular and the reserved seats are sold out often.
Both trains are fully covered by JR Pass and Hokkaido Rail Pass. If you have a plan to take these trains, I strongly recommend you to reserve your seat.
I would like to share the information about these trains information and the timetable.
Route and timetable
It takes 3 hours 40 – 50 minutes to get Kushiro from Sapporo and 2 hours 30 minutes from Sapporo to Obihiro. You may find the train route in the map below:
You can find the timetable in the link below:

Accommodation
KIHA-283 series is used for both Super Ozora. KIHA-261 series is used for Super Tokachi. Both fleets equip nice features and good seats.
KIHA-283 series Green seat is one of the best in all JR trains. It has a powered seat and 2+1 seat configuration. It has a power outlet. Ordinary class is 2+2 seat configuration and the leg space is 960mm. It is not a bad choice.
KIHA-261 series Green seat is same seat configuration 2+1 and interior as 283 series. But it has a leather seat. The seat does not have strong leather smell. But if you do not like a leather seat, It is not recommended. Ordinary seat is almost same as 283 series.

Hi Takeshi San
I am going to go around Eastern Hokkaido in Feb 2020 and we are thinking of renting a car to drive around for the most part, with the exception of taking a train from Sapporo to Kushiro and then picking up the rental car from Kushiro Station.
1) I understand that the seat ticket on the Sapporo-Kushiro train can only be bought one month before the departure date. Is this right? Do the tickets sell out very fast in Feb?
2) Would you be able to give advice on driving conditions in Eastern Hokkaido (Kushiro – Utoro- Abashiri – Asahikawa-Furano-Sapporo)? Or do you advise that we take the train? The concern is that train timings are few and trains get delayed.
Thank you for your advice
Hi VF san,
1. The ticket is on sale one month prior to travel date.
e.g
Traveling from Sapporo to Kushiro on Feb 10
Ticket on sale on Jan 10
You can book and purchase it online in the link below:

2. It’s completely frozen. If you have never driven in the freezing winter condition, I don’t recommend you to do it. Please see the link below:

Especially the weather in eastern and central Hokkaido is very very severe.

Thanks so much takeshi San for your advice about not driving in eastern Hokkaido
If we do not drive what is the best way to get around eastern Hokkaido? I heard that there are sight seeing buses but I was not sure how to book them or if the timings are regular.
Thank yiu
Hi VF san,
Unfortunately I don’t have any information about the sightseeing bus. I only can recommend you to take a train from city to city and take a local bus to get the tourist spots in each cities.

Hi Takeshi san
I am traveling from Sapporo to Kushiro in December, possible to purchase ticket online and reserved seat at the same time? Or I can only reseved seat when I arrived in Sapporo?
Which website should I purchase the ticket from?
Thank you
Hi Helen san,
You can book a seat in the link below:
https://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/English/wb/common/Menu/Menu.aspx?_ga=1.4778995.1325107855.1421419524
You can purchase a base fare ticket when you pick up a reserved seat ticket.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you very much for your prompt response.
The website indicate that I need to collect my ticket one day before I start using it but I arrived in Sapporo on 30Dec and from there I am heading to Kushiro, I do not need the pass, just single journey and from Kushiro I am going to Shiretoko. Can I book train for 30Dec and collect ticket on the day of arrival without having my reservation being cancelled?
Thank you once again
Hi Helen,
Unfortunately there is no ways to book before you arrive in Japan. You must book a seat right after you arrive in Japan.
If you use that online, your seat will be cancelled and it will be charged to your credit card. You cannot use this online booking site. The only way to book is at the reservation window in the station.
However Dec 30 will be the busiest day. I expect all seats will be booked out. Please read the link below to find some tips.

Did you reserve a seat Helen from Sapporo to Kushiro? I want to do the same.
Hello Takeshi-san!
Seek your kind advise on this matter:
Day 1: Arriving at Haneda Airport @ 06:00
Flight from Haneda Airport to Obihiro Airport at 07:40
Obihiro airport will travel to Tomamu (Transport is pre-arranged by the hotel).
Day 1 to 6: Stay at Tomamu
Day 6: I need to travel from Tomamu Station to Sapporo Station.
The hotel only arrange transport from Tomamu to New Chitose Airport, and not to Sapporo. Hence I would prefer to take the train as it would be faster.
However, Tomamu station is unmanned, and I need to purchase the tickets from Tomamu Station to Sapporo Station in advance. The JR Counter at haneda airport is only opened at 7:45am, and I won’t be able to make it on day 1.
Do you have a suggestion on how I will be able to purchase the train tickets?
Thank You in advance.
Hi CT san,
You can hop on the train at Tomamu and pay on board to the conductor. But you cannot reserve your seat and you need to find the seat in non reserved car.
If all seats are occupied, you have to be a standing passenger. But you still need to pay base fare and limited express train non reserved seat fee even if you need to stand.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi-san
Thanks for the info!
Will be fine as long as I can hop on the train.
Alternatively, would I be able to purchase the ticket from the automated ticketing machine at Haneda Airport?
Thank You in advance.
Hi CT san,
No. You cannot purchase it at Haneda. There is no JR trains vending machine.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Takeshi san,
I see that the Super Ozora stops at Minami Chitose eki. Does is also stop at Chitose eki?
Hi Eric san,
Unfortunately Super Ozora does not stop at Chitose station. You have to go to Minami-Chitose.
Cheers,
