Tsukiji Market was closed on October 6, 2018 and moved to new market, Toyosu Market on October 11, 2018.
This is the most popular destination for the foreign travellers in Metro Tokyo. Tsukiji Market (築地市場) is the biggest wholesale market in Japan. You can see “Seri” that means the auction. Especially viewing Seri for Tuna is very popular. It is held from 5:00 am to 6:30 am on weekdays. You can taste very fresh sushi at the reasonable price!
You can get Tsukiji Market by Japan Railway. But you need to walk. So I show you how to get there by Japan Railway only for Japan Rail Pass user. And also I show you most popular and convenient way that is using subway.
Please also refer the link below to learn more about train system in downtown Tokyo.
Using Japan Railway. No extra charge with Japan Rail Pass
1) Take Yamanote line to Shinbashi. Shinbashi is located between Tokyo and Shinagawa. It takes 18 minutes from Shinjuku and 4 minutes from Tokyo.
2) Walk around 20 minutes to get Tsukiji Market from Shinbashi station. You need to take underway from Shinbashi station. It is very easy to miss the route. Please see this direction from Google map too.
Using Tokyo Toei subway Oedo line
This is the easiest way to get Tsukiji Market. Tsukiji Market station on subway Oedo line is just under Tsukiji Market. Exit from A1 stairs. Tsukiji Market will be just in front of you!
If you access Tsukiji Market from Shinjuku, Oedo line depart from Shinjuku. So just take the subway. It takes 22 minutes and the fare is 260 yen.
If you access from Tokyo or other station on Yamanote line, follow the direction below.
1) Take Yamanote line to Hamamatsucho. Hamamatsucho is 3 stations away from Tokyo. It is next station of Shinbashi.
2) Transfer to Oedo line at Daimon station. It is different name of stations. But Daimon station is same location as Hamamatsucho.
3) Tsukiji Market is 2 stations away from Daimon. It takes only 5 minutes and the fare is 170 yen.
If you stay in Tokyo for a few days, I don’t recommend to use Japan Rail Pass during staying in Tokyo. Japan Railways have many local lines in Tokyo. But the subway is much more convenient. If you need more information how to decide the first day of use Japan Rail Pass, please refer “How to use Japan Rail Pass to its maximum“.

Hello,
I will be staying in Shibuya – how can I use the JR train to get to Tsukiji fish market from Shibuya?
Hi Catherine,
JR train does not go to Tsukiji. You can take JR train Yamanote line from Shibuya to Hamamatsucho. But after that, you have to take subway line.
By the way, Tsukiji market moved to Toyosu. If you want to see some stores around former Tsukiji market, that’s fine. There are still many stores and restaurants there. But if you want to see the market, you have to go to Toyosu new market:

Hi. I believe I am staying in Shin Okubo area and closest station is Tokyo Metro Higashi-Shinjuku which is 2 minutes from my hostel. JR Shinjuku is 15 min walk from me. Whats the best way to get the Tsukiji fish market? I am not familiar with subway transportation. So overwhelmed. Thank you!
Hi Diem,
It’s easy. Just ride subway Oedo line train at Higashi-Shinjuku. You can get Tsukijishijo station (Tsukiji market) directly. Please see the subway map in the link below.

I’m visiting from Hawaii. I really want to go to tsukiji market. How can I get there from ikebukuro station. I’m so confused.
Hi Tami,
Take subway Yurakucho line to Tsukishima and then take subway Oedo line to Tsukiji-Shijo. Please refer subway route map in the link below:
http://www.tokyometro.jp/en/subwaymap/pdf/routemap_en.pdf
There are some more routes and may be faster. It’s varied by the departure time. But I think this route is the easiest.

PLEASE ,HELP US WITH OUR 4 DAYS 3 NIGHT STAY IN JAPAN.WE ARRIVE JUNE 26 AT 3PM AND OF COURSE WE CANNOT ENJOY THAT MUCH THE DAY OF ARRIVAL.WE JUST NEED TO SEE GHIBLI MUSEUM ,WHICH WE HAVE A TICKET ALREADY FOR JUNE 27,2013.AND WE ALSO LIKE TO GO TSUKIJI FISH MARKET AND MT FUJI ,LAKE ASHI ,SO PLEASE CAN YOU SUGGEST THE BEST ITINERARY.I WOULD APPRECIATE THIS VERY MUCH MJ.THANKS AMILLION IN ADVANCE ‘
Hi Mary,
I don’t think you can go both Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi (Hakone). You can see Mt. Fuji from Lake Ashi. But if you want to go to other area of Mt. Fuji, like Lake Kawaguchi area, you need to stay there or spend 2 days. You only have two full days. But you will see Ghibli Museum and Tsukiji. You will spend one day for these two spots. So if your flight will leave very late, you can stay Hakone or Lake Kawaguchi and spend two days. Otherwise one of these destination will be suitable for your trip. Please see the following links to get more info about Hakone and Lake Kawaguchi.
