When you go to South East part of Hokkaido, these trains take you there. Super Ozora and Super Tokachi are operated on same route. Super Ozora connect Sapporo and Kushiro. Super Tokachi connect Sapporo and Obihiro. These trains are very popular and the reserved seats are sold out very often. Especially JR Hokkaido give you a great service in Green car. Sometimes Green car is sold out earlier than Ordinary class. Both trains are fully covered by Japan Rail Pass. So if you have a plan to take these trains, I strongly recommend you to reserve your seat when you exchange your Japan Rail Pass.

I would like to share the information about these trains with you.

Route, schedule and time required

We have 7 round trips a day for Super Ozora and 5 round trips for Super Tokachi. It takes 3 hours 40 – 50 minutes to get Kushiro from Sapporo and 2 hours 30 minutes from Sapporo to Obihiro.

Accommodation

KIHA-283 series is used for both Super Ozora and Super Tokachi. KIHA-261 series is used for Super Tokachi 4 cars formation. Both trains equip a nice feature and a good seat.

KIHA-283 series Green seat is one of the best in all JR trains. It has a powered seat and 2+1 seat configuration. Soft drink, blanket and news papers (Japanese) are included. It has a power outlet too. So you can charge your batteries and use your laptop. Ordinary class is 2+2 seat configuration and the seat pith is 960mm. It is quite standard.

KIHA-261 series Green seat is same seat configuration 2+1 as 283 series. But it has a leather seat. This seat does not have strong leather smell. But if you don’t like it, don’t take the train that is serviced by KIHA-261 series. You will get the same service, like soft drink, as KIHA-281 series. And you might see two kinds of Ordinary seat. The seats are different between Reserved and Non in some of KIHA-261 series. Reserved Ordinary have newer seat. So if you take Super Tokachi, try to reserve your seat.
