Summer is very hot and humid in Japan. It is not the best season to travel. However summer is very busy travel season. In Japan, most public schools have summer break from July 20 to August 31. This period is busier than usual. Especially mid August is called “Obon”. This is one of the busiest season. Many local residents go back to hometown and spend the time with their family. It is Japanese tradition. Many of trains are booked out very quickly. Please see the link below to learn more:

This train connects Kumamoto with Misumi. Misumi is the gateway station for Amakusa. JR Kyushu add one more trip after March 16.

Limited Express Hayato no Kaze

Hi Takeshi, I saw some years before an extra Sunrise sleeper train (I think train number was Sunrise 92?) was operated in Summer period. is that the case this year? And if so, until what date does it operate?

Sunrise Izumo 92 (Izumoshi 15:33 – Tokyo 6:23) will run on August 8th and 17th.
Sunrise Izumo 91 (Tokyo 22:21 – Izumoshi 13:07) will run on August 9th and 18th.

Will it be possible to ride the Kirakira uetsu using
A. Kirakira Nihonkai pass by buying a reserved seat ticket?
B. Seishun 18 kippu + buying a reserved seat ticket?

You can use either one. As you think, you have to add the reserved seat fee to take Kira Kira Uetsu.
