Kintetsu Railway has the biggest limited express train network in all private railway companies.
Kintetsu Railway has the biggest limited express train network in all private railway companies.

I have received many inquiries about Nagoya-Osaka or Kyoto trip. There are lots of travellers who arrive in Chubu (Nagoya) airport and depart from Kansai (Osaka) airport or reverse or arrive in/depart from Chubu. Even if you have round trip between Nagoya and Osaka, JR Pass is too expensive choice. And there is no options to cover both Nagoya and Osaka/Kyoto by JR. One way ticket from Nagoya to Osaka or Kyoto by Shinkansen is very common choice. However JR is not only railway that connect Nagoya, Osaka and Kyoto. Kintetsu Railway that is the biggest private railway company operates many trains among these three cities, Nara, Ise and Yoshino. Kintetsu Railway has very useful deal for the travellers who want to travel in this area.

In this post, I would like to show you Kintetsu Rail Pass and Kintetsu Rail Pass Wide.

What is Kintetsu Railway?

In Japan, there are many railway services. This is the biggest reason why you are very confused. Kintetsu Railway is NON JR and the biggest private railway company in Japan. Of course this railway service is not covered by any JR deals, such as JR Pass, Kansai Area Pass. Please see the map below to find Kintetsu Railway network.

Kintetsu Rail Pass covers all part of this network. As you see the map above, you can use this railway to get Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka (Namba, Uehonmachi, Tsuruhashi), Nara, Yoshino and Ise. And this pass includes three vouchers to take Kintetsu Railway Limited Express. Kintetsu Railway Limited Express has very nice accommodation and have same level service as JR’s limited express train. I tell you about detail of this limited express train and coverage below.

You may know about Kansai Thru Pass. This pass covers Kintetsu Railway and other major private railways in Kansai area. But this pass does not include Nagoya and Ise. And it does not include Kintetsu Railway Limited Express train voucher. As long as you travel both Nagoya and Osaka/Kyoto, Kansai Thru Pass is not your first choice. Please find the detailed about Kansai Thru Pass at the link below:

How to use Kansai Thru Pass. Compare pass and single fare.

How good is Kintetsu Railway Limited Express?

Ise-Shima Liner 23000 series is used for limited express to Ise area.
Ise-Shima Liner 23000 series is used for limited express to Ise area.

Some of major private railway companies operate limited express as commute train without extra charge, such as Hankyu, Keihan and Hanshin. But Kintetsu operates limited express as special train. It has reserved seat only. You have to pay limited express surcharge on top of base fare and this limited express train has same level of interior as JR’s limited express train.

There are many kinds of fleets for limited express trains. But all fleets have 2+2 seat configuration and seat pitch is 1000 to 1050 mm. It is spacious and comfortable.

Especially if you travel between Nagoya and Osaka, trip time is more than 2 hours. The seat and interior are very important factor.

If you travel from Nagoya to Osaka or Kyoto by limited express by 30th of September, it is higher than Kintetsu Rail Pass at 3800 yen. It is really good deal for the traveller who wants to travel from Nagoya to Kyoto or Osaka. If you go to Ise from Kyoto, Osaka or Nara, it is better deal than single fare too. But if you visit Ise, Kintetsu Rail Pass Wide may be better deal for you. Please see next chapter.

If you travel after 1st of October, limited express voucher will not be included. You must have at least one round trip between Kansai area (Osaka, Nara and Kyoto) and Nagoya or Ise.

Compare cost and trip time between the Shinkansen fare and Kintetsu Rail Pass

Shinkansen is most common way to get Kyoto and Osaka from Nagoya. It is much faster than Kintetsu Railway Limited Express trains. But Shinkansen is much more expensive too. Before you decide to go for Kintetsu Rail Pass, you should compare these trains by cost and time.

Nagoya – Namba

TrainsTrip timeFare
Kintetsu Railway
Limited Express
2 hrs 30 mins3800 yen
+ Limited express surcharge
Shinkansen (Nozomi)
and Subway
1 hr 20 mins6840 yen

Shinkansen and subway combination is much faster but the cost is almost double. And Kintetsu Railway is direct access without any transfer. This is the strongest point.

Nagoya – Osaka (Umeda)

TrainsTrip timeFare
Kintetsu Railway
Limited Express
and JR local train
2 hrs 45 mins3800 yen
+ Limited express surcharge
+ 180 yen (JR)
Shinkansen (Nozomi)
and JR local train
1 hr 10 mins6560 yen

You have to transfer at Shin-Osaka to get Osaka by the Shinkansen. But it is same station and very easy to transfer from the Shinkansen to JR local train. If you take Kintetsu Railway, you can transfer at Tsuruhashi to JR Osaka Kanjo line. It is much easier than transfer at Namba to subway. Tsuruhashi station is much smaller than Namba. JR and Kintetsu stations are connected directly.

Nagoya – Shin-Osaka

TrainsTrip timeFare
Kintetsu Railway
Limited Express
and Subway
3 hrs3800 yen
+ Limited express surcharge
+ 280 yen (subway)
Shinkansen (Nozomi)50 mins6560 yen

Shin-Osaka is Shinkansen’s terminal station. Shinkansen is much more accessible than Kintetsu Railway. If you take Kintetsu Railway, you have to transfer at Namba to get subway. And subway fare is extra.

Nagoya – Kyoto

TrainsTrip timeFare
Kintetsu Railway
Limited Express
Need to transfer at Yamato-Yagi
2 hrs 35 mins3800 yen
+ Limited express surcharge
Shinkansen (Nozomi)36 mins5800 yen

Both Kintetsu Railway and Shinkansen are direct access to Kyoto. Shinkansen is 2 hours faster than Kintetsu Railway Limited Express.

Nagoya – Nara

TrainsTrip timeFare
Kintetsu Railway
Limited Express
and Kintetsu local train
Need to transfer at Yamato-Yagi
2 hrs 15 mins3800 yen
+ Limited express surcharge
Shinkansen (Nozomi)
JR local train
1 hr 30 mins6560 yen

Shinkansen and JR trains are still faster than Kintetsu Railway. But the difference is smallest in all above cases.

Assessment

If you are really sensitive with cost, Kintetsu Rail Pass is a good choice for even Nagoya to Osaka or reverse one way trip. If you travel from Nagoya to Osaka and visit Nara and Kyoto, this pass gives you a huge savings.

Even though the Shinkansen is much faster, this pass is one of my most recommended deals.

  1. CY says:

How does it work when i exchange the Kintetsu limited express ticket voucher? I bring the voucher to the reservation ticket window to exchange for the actual limited express ticket? So when i board the train, i just need to show that limited express ticket, or do i still need to show the kintetsu rail pass together with the limited express ticket?

    • Hi CY,

You need to show your pass and limited express voucher at the window before on board. And you will receive an actual limited express seat ticket. All seats are reserved seat. You cannot take a limited express train without an actual limited express ticket.

      Cheers,

thank you takeshi for your response.

    After reviewing your email,

April 2, we will buy the Kintetsu Pass 5 days in Chubu\MEITETSU TRAVEL PLAZA (inside the chubu AP) upon arrival at 55AM (will wait for window opening).

April 3, will go Ltd exp window in Kuwana station to book the next or available seat for Kuwana station to osaka-namba (via kintetsu Ltd exp using the voucher no.1). Base on Hyperdia it’s a direct way (122mins).
Hopefully we can ride the train without delay.
Then OSAKA-NAMBA to KINTETSU NIPPOMBASHI via Kintetsu Ordinary train as our room is located near market there.

April 4, Check out, KintetsuNIPPOMBASHI to YAMATOSAIDIJI to KYOTO via Ordinary train.
    stroll in Kyoto
check in Super hotel near JR NARA around 7 or 8pm.

    April 5, check out
KYOTO to KintetsuNARA via ordinary train on Kintetsu Pass.
stroll in NARA then going back to kuwana.

    KINTETSUNARA to Yamato-Saidaiji
take limited express train from Yamato-Saidaiji to Yamato-Yagi (voucher no.2)
    YAMATO-YAGI to Kuwana

Just wondering where we will use my voucher no.3.

April 6 will be graduation day in kuwana
april 7 will be USJ via car
april 8 will check in hotel yukkachi then possible buy 1 day pass (base on location to check) as our 5 days will be expired then.
    april 9 nagayashi via car
april 10 will go back home

    • Hi Jason,

You should you 3rd voucher for Yamato-Yagi to Kuwana. It’s too far to take ordinary train.
What kind of one day pass are you going to buy for Yokkaichi? I don’t think Kintetus has one day pass for around Yokkaichi. As far as I know, single ticket is only choice for traveling around Yokkaichi.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • jayson says:

        OK. Thanks Takeshi

I thought i will only use 1 voucher from KintetsuNARA to Kuwana. In my previous comment, i already indicated we will use the no.2 voucher to Yamato-Yagi to Kuwana

        April 5,
        KINTETSUNARA to Yamato-Saidaiji
take limited express train from Yamato-Saidaiji to Yamato-Yagi (voucher no.2)
        YAMATO-YAGI to Kuwana

If that’s the case in Yokkachi then we will just use single ticket, we have a meet up there . Will search for more activity on Yokkachai

        • Hi Jason,

Unfortunately there is no direct train from either Kyoto and Nara to Nagoya and Kuwana. So you have to change the train at least twice when you travel from Nara to Kuwana. Those are Yamato-Saidaiji and Yamato-Yagi as we have already discussed.
So you will take two limited express train for Yamato-Saidaiji to Yamato-Yagi and Yamato-Yagi to Kuwana. You need to use two vouchers and all three vouchers will be used when you get Kuwana.

          Cheers,

Thank u for your reply. It is a big help to me. Do you have any idea until what time are kintetsu limited express train ticket booths open? Are they very busy during the weekends?

    • Hi Yvianne,

It depends on the station. But at major station, like Osaka-Namba, Tsuruhashi, Kintetsu-Nagoya, it’s open from 5:30 to 23:20.
Usually weekend is busier than weekdays but it’s hard to say how busy it is.

im thinking the transpo budget as in kintetsu 5days..kintetsu limited i read have a surcharge..how about the shinkansen which is most expensive? Does it have surcharge and will still need to buy other pass? just wondering that because of surcharge in kintetsu limited even with 3 coupon. it’s possible to cost more than shinkansen? Thank you so much

        • Hi Jason,

So you don’t need to have Kintetsu pass on April 7, do you? If so, I think 3 limited express vouchers are enough for your trip. You can take limited express from Kuwana to Osaka Namba, and Yamato-Yagi to Nagoya. Kyoto, Osaka and Nara are very closed each other and you don’t need to take limited express trains. Ordinary trains are okay.

You may take limited express train from Yamato-Saidaiji to Yamato-Yagi. There is no direct trains from Nara to Nagoya/Kuwana. You have to change the trains twice, at Yamato-Saidaiji and Yamato-Yagi. Please see the limited express train map at the link below:
          http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/about/limited_express/network.html

Unfortunately timetable is not available. Only Hyperdia can show you the trains connection.

            April 4
Osaka-namba to kyoto (ordinary train via kintetsu pass ) then
Kyoto to kintetsu nara (ordinary train via kintetsu pass)

            April5
Kintetsu nara to yamato-saidaji (ordinary train?) And yamato-saidaji to yamato-nagi (kintetsu limited voucher no.2 plus surcharge) then yamato-nagi to kuwana (ordinary train via kintetsu pass?)

am i right in these route?

Is shinkanse have surcharge too when using limited express?

can i use the limited express or pass on same time/day like for example we will be in kuwana station at 9am april 3 then is it possible we can ride the train going to osaka-namba at 930 or 10am? Not sure how the reservation works on limited express..my worry is that if we use the limited express and not reserve(how?) on that day/time ,it’s possible to wait many hours just to use it.

Thanks and you are very helpful.

            • Hi Jason,

I think you misunderstand limited express voucher. You can take limited express trains up to 3 times without any extra by Kintetsu pass.
You can book limited express seat by this voucher at any major Kintetsu railway stations, like Nagoya, Kuwana and Namba. You CANNOT ride limited express train without reservation. You can book it in advance if you want.

This pass gives you unlimited ride of ordinary train as many as you want.

On Apr 5, you can take ordinary train from Nara to Yamato-Saidaiji and Yamato-Saidaiji to Yamato-Yagi. And then take limited express from Yamato-Yagi to Kuwana. This segment is the longest in this day.

If you take Shinkansen, you have to pay base fare and Shinkansen surcharge. You can find the fare at Hyperdia too.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com

It’s now clear takeshi and thanks a lot about that. No need for me to worry on surcharge as the voucher will be enough for kintetsu limited express.

My last concern is on how to reserve the date/time after i purchase the kintetsu pass 5days in travel agency or online then will exchange it on actual pass on chubu AP upon arrival.

Also i read that only kinetsu pass WIDE is available on chubu AP to purchase but how about exchange? Is it possible to exchange to actual ticket in chubu AP?

We do not need the Kintetsu wide pass because we will have a service upon arrival in chubu AP.

We will buy kintetsu pass 5 days in travel agency. Not sure if we can exchange it on chubu ap.

As I mentioned previous reply, you cannot exchange it at Chubu. Don’t purchase it before leave and purchase it in Chubu.
Once you get an actual pass, you can book. But you cannot book it at Chubu because it’s not Kintetsu station. You can book it at major Kintetsu station, like Nagoya, Kuwana.

                  Cheers,

Arriving at chubu AP , can we exchange it? I read that only kintetsu pass wide?thanks

                • Hi Michelle,

You can purchase Kintetsu rail pass (not wide) at Chubu but you cannot exchange it.
You cannot book at Chubu. You need to get major Kintetsu railway station, like Nagoya.

Ok as advised base on our plan we will purchase the kintetsu pass 5 days upon arrival (april 2) in chubu AP at 55am (655am japan)

Good timing for the opening window.
Then we will reserve in kintetsu nagoya line from kuwana to osaka-namba on april 3 9am..or possible in kuwana and no need to go in nagoya just to get a reservation in kintetsu limited going to osaka-namba?

is it possible we do advance booking via hyperdia for april 3 kuwana or nagoya to osaka-namba via kintetsu limited then just give the voucher in real time?

we do not want to wait or in worst case cannot ride a limited express from kuwana or nagoya to osaka-namba because we are late to reserve or the no more available seat..

unless we go there at april 3 9am then go to limited window to reserve or book and hope we can ride at 10am?

We want to make sure we can ride the limited express at 10am on april 3.

You are very kind in answering all my questions.

                  • Hi Jason,

As long as you get an actual Kintetsu rail pass, you can book a seat on limited express at the station where limited express makes a stop. Kuwana is a station where limited express makes a stop. So you can book it there by using your limited express voucher.

I cannot guarantee that you can book 10:00 am train at 9:00 am. It depends on how busy it will be so I cannot guess. All I can say that you may try to book as early as possible.

                    Cheers,

Also is there a way to book kintetsu limited express train online? I already have voucher from the Kintetsu rail pass wide pamphlet.

              • Hi Yvianne,

Unfortunately there is no direct trains between Kyoto and Osaka. You have to change the trains at Yamato-Saidaiji. Please see the limited express trains map at the link below:
                http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/about/limited_express/network.html

Limited Express train run very few between Nara and Osaka-Namba. You will take ordinary train between Yamato-Saidaiji and Osaka-Namba.

I’m not very familiar with limousine bus from Chubu. But this is only way to get Sakae directly from Chubu. But this bus is not covered by Kintetsu pass wide. You can take only Meitetsu railway train between Chubu and Nagoya station. You need to take subway but subway is not covered by the pass either.

Kintetsu railway and Hanshin railway connect each other. You can take Hashin railway from Osaka-Namba too. If you want, you can get Kobe-Sannomiya from Nara by Kintetsu directly. But between Osaka-Namba and Kobe-Sannomiya is not covered by Kintetsu rail pass wide.

There is no online reservation available. You have to make a reservation after arrival at any major Kintetsu railway stations, like Nagoya, Osaka-Namba. But you can book in advance. So you can book for Osaka to Nagoya at Nagoya station too.

                Cheers,
