Toyama is one of major cities in Hokuriku region. This city is known as the base of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and Kurobe Gorge (Kurobe Keikoku). You also can access to Tateyama by both train and bus, and Shirakawago and Shin-Hotaka by bus directly. This station is the hub of this region.

In this post, I would like to explain about Toyama station’s structures with many photos of this station. And I also show you the bus stops around this station and Toyama Chiho Railway’s station which is Dentetsu Toyama station.

JR and Ainokaze Toyama Railway Toyama station

Toyama is connected with Tokyo, Nagano and Kanazawa by Hokuriku Shinkansen. Takayama and Nagoya can be accessed by JR Takayama line. A few trips of Limited Express Wide View Hida connect Toyama and Nagoya directly. Trains depart and arrive at Toyama from the following destinations:

  • Hokuriku Shinkansen to/from Tokyo, Kanazawa, Nagano
  • Takayama to/from Takayama, Gero, Nagoya
  • Ainokaze Toyama Railway to/from Takaoka, Uozu

You may find some more information about the location and route in this region in the links below:

Structure, tracks and platforms

Hokuriku Shinkansen platform

Unfortunately there is no English maps of Toyama station. The following link is in Japanese and looks very complicated. But I put the link for your information:

JR West official site, Toyama station map (Japanese)

Toyama station is three levels structure. On the ground level, there are two platforms of Ainokaze Toyama Railway. On third level, there are one Ainokaze Toyama Railway’s platform and two Hokuriku Shinkansen’s platforms. JR Takayama line’s trains arrive and depart at third level of Ainokaze Toyama Railway’s platform.

Track #4 on the ground level
Track #2 on the third level

There is a bridge above the platforms on the ground level. One of platforms is connected with the walkway under the platforms on third level.

Platforms for track #4,#5 and #6 are located on the ground level. Other platforms are located on third floor. JR and Ainokaze Toyama Railway are different railway companies. But JR Takayama line trains arrive and depart at Ainokaze Toyama Railway’s platforms. Please make sure which platform you need to go.

Ainokaze Toyama Railway is not JR. You have to add single fare if you use JR pass, Hokuriku Arch Pass or Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass. But JR Pass and Hokuriku Arch Pass cover between Toyama and Takaoka on Ainokaze Toyama Railway line.

As you see, there are four tracks, #11 to #14, and two platforms for Hokuriku Shinkansen. It has only two directions, bound for Nagano and Tokyo or bound for Kanazawa. Please make sure which direction you will go before proceeding the platform.

Toyama station is currently under construction. Whole part of Toyama station will be viaduct station. All platforms will be located on third floor by 2022.

Ticket gate/Exit

Hokuriku Shinkansen Central Gate

There are six ticket gates in Toyama station. You can exit to south side and north side of Toyama station. South side is the primary exit. This side faces downtown of Toyama. There are many stores, Dentetsu Toyama station and some tram stops. At south side, there are two ticket gates, Hokuriku Shinkansen Central Gate and Ainokaze Toyama Railway’s South Gate.

At north side, it is much quieter than south side. There are a tram stop, a few hotels and many office buildings. There is only one ticket gate of Ainokaze Toyama Railway which is called North Gate. This is not JR ticket gate but you can go through this gate by JR Pass, Hokuriku Arch Pass, Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass or even regular ticket.

On second level under the platforms on third floor, there are several ticket gate. Two of those are called “Transfer gate”. These gates are used for transfer among Shinkansen, Ainokaze Toyama Railway and JR Takayama line. These gates are located side by side. If you use this gate, you need to exit the gate and reenter to another one. You cannot go through directly. There is one more gate which is connected to the shopping complex, “Toyamaruche”.

Shinkansen Transfer Gate

JR’s reservation window and ticket office are located beside Shinkansen Central Gate. If you use JR Pass, Hokuriku Arch Pass or Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass, you can reserve your seat there. There is JR reservation vending machine but there is no reservation window at north side of the station. If you JR Pass, Hokuriku Arch pass or Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass and need to reserve your seat, you have to access to south side. Of course you can go through the station by these passes.

Toyama Chiho Railway, Dentetsu Toyama station

South side of Toyama station

Toyama Chiho Railway’s station which is called “Dentetsu Toyama” station is located next to JR Toyama station. You can change trains very easily.

This station is located on the second floor in the station building, “Esta”. You can access to second floor by escalator, elevator or stairs from outside building directly. You will find the ticket gate easily.

  2. Rita says:

    Dear Takeshi San,

How frequent does Toyama Chiho Railway (from/to Unazuki Onsen St. – Toyama St.) operate in an hour? Where can I get their timetable?

    Thanks so much.

    Regards,
    Rita

    Hello Takeshi-san,

First of all, thank you for this amazing website and your mindblowing care and attention on it. You are a hero and I can’t thank you enough.

I want to share with you my itinary to ask your thoughts for my last three days -which left me very confusing due the weather- I’ll be in Japan for 15 days and use 7 days JRPass for my last 7 days.

*This will be my first time in Japan, I chose the Autumn season which i dreamed to visit in this time of the year since my childhood*

    16 Nov Haneda late arrival
    17 Nov Tokyo
18 Nov Tokyo – day trip to Nikko
    19 Nov Tokyo
20 Nov Hakone – stay at the ryokan see fuji five lakes?*
21 Nov Fuji five lakes? (I don’t know which day is the best to go there, maybe i should skip and go to Kyoto early) stay Kyoto
    22 Nov Kyoto
    23 Nov Kyoto
    *JRPass starts this day*
24 Nov Kyoto – Nara – stay at Osaka (just for Dotonburi, eat sleep and go)
25 Nov Hiroshima, around noon Miyajima, staying at Hiroshima
26 Nov Hiroshima – Nagoya- Takayama (with wide view Hida)
    27 Nov Shirakawago to Kanazava
    28 Nov Kanazava to… where?

    I still have time to 30 November 23:50 my flight in Haneda is very late i would like to maximize my visit. I know two options;

-Take Alpine Route but I don’t have snow gear and I don’t know if the weather would suit me
    – Go visit around Kurobe Gorge as a day trip from Kanazava, or stay at an onsen if i could find a cheap one (probably i will be broke at this point of journey) or should i go to Nagano and see around 29th or can i take a marginal route and ho Matsumoto than Kiso valley at 30th and bact to Tokyo? I don’t know Kurobe Gorge or Nagano would be good enough (weather vise) to visit

Or just go completely different place, for the end of November

I can empathize you probably don’t like this kind of question but I can’t explain enough how exited confused i am, i just want to maximize my enjoyment and my JRPass. I can’t appreciate enough if you kindly suggest a direction from 28th to the end. I can even change my itinary completely for 7 days.

Thank you so much in advance.

  4. Stella Tan says:

    Good Morning Takeshi San,
We will be taking Limited Express (Wide View) Hida Train from Takayama to Toyama, transfer to Hokuriku Shinkansen from Toyama through to Kanazawa.

Since Toyama station is currently under construction till year 2022, That’s mean all platforms will be located at third floor? transfer to Hokuriku Shinkansen is also located at third floor?

We will be using Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass for Limited Express (Wide View) Hida Train from Takayama to Toyama, do we need to pay additional fee for Hokuriku Shinkansen from Toyama to Kanazawa?

Thank you in advance for taking your time to read my question and advise on this matters.

    Have a great day ahead.

    • Hi Stella san,

Toyama station is under the construction but all platforms had moved to the third floor as you said. So when you change trains, you just go down to the walkway and enter the Hokuriku Shinkansen ticket gate. And go up to the platform of the Hokuriku Shinkansen on the third floor. Now it is much easier to change trains than what I wrote about it in the post.

You don’t need to pay extra to take the Hokuriku Shinkansen. You can take a seat in non reserved car.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  5. Wazack says:

Hello..is it possible for me to reserve round trip ticket on the same day between toyama station and shirakawago? how can i do the reservation and how much the fare?

    Thank you.

  6. Caren Tan says:

    Hi Takeshi-san

May I ask you the following:
    1. Should we get Takayama Hokuriku Area Pass based on following:
    – day 1 : Osaka to Kanazawa – Shirakawa-go
    – day 2: Shirakawa-go to Takayama
    -day 3: Takayama – Toyama – Iiyama

    2. If we take JR Ltd express Hida no 7 ( arrive 14.46 at Toyama)
Do we have enough time to transfer Hokuriku Shinkansen ( hakutaka 568 ) that departs at 1510?

  7. Victor says:

    Hello Takeshi,

We plan to arrive to Toyama Station from Kanasawa with Shinkansen Hokuriki Line, train Kagayaki 512. It arrives at 17:06. Then we want to take the Hida 20 train to Takayama that leaves at 17:13. Do you think that we have enough time to make the train chage?

    Many thanks,

    Victor

  8. Alfredo says:

    Hello
On August 18, I would like to go from Kanazawa to Takayama, by train.
    It’s posible?
It’s there a problem with the train?

  9. Esther says:

    Hi Takeshi,

If i need to change between shinkansen ( from kanazawa) and wide view hida ( to takayama) at toyama station.
    1. Its correct after arrival ( third floor) i must go down to second floor (shinkansen transfer gate).
    2. From shinkansen transfer gate go to takayama line gate ( 2nd floor).
Do you know name of this gate ?
    3. And then go up again to 3rd floor to track 1-3 ( takayama line) ?

    Thank you in advance.

    • Hi Esther,

Your route is correct. The gate is called transfer gate. But all you have to do is just following the signage. There are lots. You cannot lose the way.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

What time did the JR West Ticket Office close in Toyama station? I’ll be arriving on 14 Apr on 11.01pm and intends to purchase Kurobe Alpine Route Option Ticket. JR Tateyama website said it closes at 11.00pm but JR West website said it’s 11.30pm. Which 1 is correct?
