Odawara is the gateway to the one of most well known Onsen resort, Hakone. If you take JR trains, you have to change the trains to Hakone at this station, Odawara. Odawara station is not a mega terminal station. But there is JR Tokaido line, Shinkansen and Odakyu/Hakone Tozan Railway. It may make you be confused.
In this post, I show you many images of all transfer exit, ticket gates and platforms. You will find how to transfer the train at this station, Odawara.
- Station structure, tracks and platforms
- Ticket gate/Exit
- How to transfer from the Shinkansen to Odakyu Railway / Hakone Tozan Railway
- How to transfer from JR Tokaido and Shonan Shinjuku line to Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Railway
- Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Railway’s Odawara station
- How to transfer from Shinkansen to JR Tokaido and Shonan Shinjuku line
- Connection time
Station structure, tracks and platforms
Please see the map below.
You also can get a map at JR East official site (English).
At Odawara station, there are four railway companies, Izu-Hakone Railway Daiyuzan line, JR Tokaido line, Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Railway, and JR Tokaido Shinkansen. Most of you do not need to take Izu-Hakone Railway Daiyuzan line. This railway actually does not go either Hakone and Izu. I explain for other three railways in this post because Izu-Hakone Railway is a commute line for locals.
* Strictly speaking, Odakyu Railway and Hakone Tozan Railway are the different railway companies. However Odakyu Railway is the parent company of Hakone Tozan Railway. And the segment between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto belongs to Hakone Tozan Raliway. However all trains are operated by Odakyu Railway’s fleets. So you can think Odakyu and Hakone Tozan Railway are the same company.
On the ground floor, there are Tokaido line platforms, Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Railway platforms and Shinkansen exit/ticket gate. Both JR Tokaido line and Odakyu exits/ticket gates are located at the overpass. All exits/ticket gates are connected the overpass. You can find the overpass to be shown by white shade in the station map above.
Only Shinkansen’s platform is located at overhead.
All platforms and tracks of Odawara station are the following:
Track# | Lines/Trains | Destination |
1,2 | Izu-Hakone Railway Daiyuzan line | Daiyuzan |
3,4 | JR Tokaido line | Atami, Ito, Numazu |
5,6 | JR Tokaido line Ueno-Tokyo line Shonan-Shinjku line | Tokyo, Yokohama, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno |
7,11 | Odakyu Hakone Tozan Railway | Hakone-Yumoto, Gora |
9,10 | Odakyu | Shinjuku |
13 | The Tokaido Shinkansen | Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka |
14 | The Tokaido Shinkansen | Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama |
Ticket gate/Exit
As you saw the map above, all railways have one ticket gate/exit. And there is Shinkansen transfer gate between Shinkansen and JR Tokaido line. If you transfer between JR trains and Shinkansen, you can go through this gate. You do not have to exit the gate. Because you can use one same base fare ticket for both JR trains and Shinkansen. If you use JR Pass, you can show your pass to the staff at the gate.
However if you go to Hakone, you have to get on Odakyu/Hakone Tozan Railway. In this case, you have to exit and then enter Odakyu railway platform.
I explain you how to change the trains at Odawara station.
How to transfer from the Shinkansen to Odakyu Railway / Hakone Tozan Railway
You can find all transfer ways in the movie below. I recorded it by myself. You can find the location of lockers and storage service too:
I show you several photos and explain step by step. It is not far and very easy to transfer.
First of all, when you get off Shinkansen just follow the sign to exit and go down the stairs, escalators or elevators.

You will see Shinkansen exit.

When you exit Shinkansen gate, you will see the concourse.

You will find the stairs and escalators on your right hand side.

Proceed to upstairs and you will find Odakyu and Hakone Tozan Railway’s ticket gate right after you get upstairs.

How to transfer from JR Tokaido and Shonan Shinjuku line to Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Railway
Go upstairs from the platform and you will find ticket gate. There is a big lentern above.

Proceed to the left on the concourse.

And you will get Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Railway’s ticket gate soon.
Odakyu / Hakone Tozan Railway’s Odawara station
Some of you want to purchase the Odakyu Railway’s ticket or Hakone Free Pass. There is Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center just beside Odakyu Railway’s ticket gate. You can purchase these tickets/passes. You can book Odakyu’s limited express “Romancecar” here.

After you go through ticket gate, you will the signage above.

And also there are lots of sign of “To Hakone” and “Hakone Tozan Railway”. All you have to do is just following these sign.

You will find the train that goes to Hakone-Yumoto.

If you take Romancecar from Odakyu Shinjuku, the train goes to Hakone-Yumoto directly. You don’t need to transfer at Odawara. But if you take local train, you have to transfer to Hakone-Yumoto. There is no direct trains from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto other than Romancecar.
How to transfer from Shinkansen to JR Tokaido and Shonan Shinjuku line
In this case, you don’t need to exit. You may proceed Shinkansen transfer gate.

And you will go through connection path and get in the station of Tokaido / Shonan-Shijuku line station.

It’s shown by Orange shade in the station map above.
Connection time
If you just transfer the trains, you can make it in 10 minutes. However if you need to purchase a ticket or pass, you have to add 10 more minutes at least. In the peak season, Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center is busy. It may take 15 minutes there. So give yourself a plenty of time.
Comments
Hi Takeshi,
How long does it take to transfer from the Shinkansen to the Hakonetozan Line? If I take a Shinkansen that arrives at Odawara at 16:37, is there enough time to make the 16:45 train to Haoke-Yumoto?
Thanks!
Hi Laura,
It’s possible but it may be tight for the first timer.
If you intend to purchase Hakone free pass or other deals in Odawara, you will spend more minutes. If you purchase single fare ticket, it’s tight but possible.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com

NEX Tokyo round trip ticket (Narita-Shinjuku return by Narita Express)
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/nex_round.html
Tokyo Subway Pass
This covers most of places in Tokyo other than Disney Sea. JR train is better to get Disney. Single fare to Maihama from Shinjuku is around a few hundred yen. Please see the link below to find about trip within downtown Tokyo at the link below. You will find the info about Tokyo subway pass too.

Trip to Hakone
Hakone Free Pass is the best choice. It covers whole part of the trip from Shinjuku to Hakone directly. But if you want to use Shinkansen, you have to pay single fare. Please find the fare at Hyperdia:

I will depart from Shinjuku by paying Romance car – one way 890yen. Last after Gotemba Premium outlet. If to take Shinkansen to pay for single fee. Is it to book online to reserve seat? Then I need to take at Odawara?
I have checked Hyperlink looks like the train direction is complicated compared to take Romance car train to Shinjuku. I want to experience Shinkansen, if this is too complicatd, Based on my itinerary, Which intinerary thatI i can take Skinkansen?
Day 3 – Kamakura – to buy Odakyu Railways
Enoshima Kamakura Free Pass – Yen 1470. At night, from Shinjuku after shopping, to go back toYotsuya-Sanchome .
Question : What pass/card i need to buy?

*Cup Noodles Museum
Should be all cover right? Ramen Museum – If is not cover, what train i need to take from Cup Noodles Museum – What is the train fare?
Day 5 – Disney Sea – If from Yotsuya-Sanchome – Can i take Metro? Earlier from Sinjuku guided : JR train is better to get Disney. Single fare to Maihama from Shinjuku is around a few hundred yen. Is it still the same to take?
Day 6 – From Yotsuya-Sanchome – Ueno – Asakusa – Oshiage skytree (optional) – Tsukiji – Tokyo Tower. Can i use Metro line? If yes, I saw day pass yen 600 without Toei line. Do I need to include Toei line subways for Metro+Toei Line day pass Yen 1000 to these 5 places?
Day 7 – From Yotsuya-Sanchome to Shibuya- Harajuku – Giza – Akihabara – Iwamotocho (optional) – Roppongi/ Can i use Metro line? If yes, I saw day pass yen 600 without Toei line. Do I need to include Toei line subways for Metro+Toei Line day pass Yen 1000 to these 5 places?
Day 8 – Day time, probably to Shibuya – After that to airport directly.
Is there any card (train) that i can buy to use?
Narita- Shinjuku return by Narita Express – Same as above, do i need to transit? or direct. Which station that Nearest i need to get down to Narita aiport?
Thanks in advance an look forward for your update.
Regards,
Samantha
Hi Samantha san,
1. Narita-Shinjuku
You can get Shinjuku directly by Narita Express. Then you need to take subway to get Yotsuya-Sanchome
2. Trip to Hakone
If you want to take Shinkansen, you should take it on the way to Hakone. You can get Odawara as you probably know from Tokyo or Shinagawa. This is the easiest way to get Shinkansen. You cannot purchase a ticket online. But you can purchase it at any JR stations in Tokyo in advance. But it’s not hard to purchase a ticket just before taking Shinkansen at Tokyo station or Shinagawa station.
And then you can purchase Hakone Free Pass 2 days at Odawara.
When you go back to Shinjuku from Gotemba, the bus is the easiest. You don’t need to go back to Odawara. Please see more info at the link below:
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/fuji-hakone-access-guide-by-train-and-bus-from-both-tokyo-and-osaka-kyoto-nagoya.html
3. to Disney
Just take JR train. Your hotel may be located within walking from JR Yotsuya station. Just check it with your hotel. If not, take subway to Yotsuya station and catch JR train to Tokyo. It’s easier than taking a train at Shinjuku.
4. In Tokyo
48 hours subway pass is available at 1200 yen. This covers both Metro and Toei subway.

Hi Takeshi-san,
Thanks for you guidance. I have understand.
For these two days:
Day 3 – Kamakura – to buy Odakyu Railways
Enoshima Kamakura Free Pass – Yen 1470.
Question : This pass can be purchased at Narita airport right?
Day 4 – Yokohama – Yokohama – Minatomira l Pass Yen 520 – Question : is it correct?
I will go to those places :
*Yamate
*Sankeien Garden
*Minato Mirai
*Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse
*Chinatown
*Yokohama Motomachi Shopping Street (beside Chinatown)
*Cup Noodles Museum
Question : Above should be all covered right?
except Ramen Museum – What train that i need to take from Cup Noodles Museum to Ramen Museum then go back to Shinjuku.
Regards,
Samantha
Hi Samantha san,
You cannot purchase Enoshima Kamakura Pass at Narita. You have to go to Odakyu Shnjuku station:
http://www.odakyu.jp/english/deels/freepass/enoshima_kamakura/
All places are covered by Minato Mirai Pass except Sankeien garden. All info about Yokohama can be found at the link below:

Hi Takeshi-san,
I would like to check after going Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, then to Hakone Shrine, how to take Hakone Tozan bus to Gotemba?
Second, for Yokohama, where to buy Tokyu Railway’s Yokohama Minatomirai Ticket? I will come from Yotsuya-sanchome (Metro) to Shibuya. Then from Shibuya to take Tokyu Toyoko Line to Yokohama. Is it correct?
Regards,
Samantha
Hi Samantha san,
There are many ways. I cannot which way is the best because it depends on your departure time. You can find the route at the link below:
http://hakone-tozanbus.jcld.jp/HakoneRouteFinder/defaultEN.htm
There are no direct ways. You have to change the bus usually at least twice.
You can purchase Tokyu Minato Mirai ticket at Tokyu railway Shibuya station.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JRPail.com
Hi Takeshi-san,
Thank you so much for your guideline. We are in Tokyo now. Day 1 – we bought Nex return airport to Shinjuku and Shinjuku to airport. By looking Tokyo station easier for us, can we use our Nex from Tokyo to airport instead of from Shinjuku to airport
Regards,
Samantha
Hi Samantha san,
You can catch Narita Express at any JR stations in downtown Tokyo. Of course it’s totally no problem to take this train at Tokyo station.

Hi there ,
How to get to Kyoto from Hakone ? (With JR Pass)
I will be at K’House Hakone hostel and have to go to K’s House Kyoto Hostel. Google map is telling me to get ” Hakoneyumoto line” then change to Odawara station to take Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen .
Is that correct , will my JR Pass cover the ride ?
Thank you so much
Hi Leila,
Only Shinkansen is covered by JR Pass. Any other transportation in Hakone is not covered by JR pass. Please find more info at the link below:

Hi Takeshi,
We plan to go to Hakone for a day trip from Nagoya.
Can we use the JR pass taking the Hikari train to Odawara, then change to Hakone Tozan railway to Hakone-Yumoto?
Do you think there is enough time to see just a few major attractions in Hakone and what pass would you recommend for one day in Hakone? Many thanks.
Hi James,
JR Pass covers Nagoya-Odawara only. You need to add extra on top of JR pass after Odaawra.
If you access to Lake Ashi and the heart of Hakone, Hakone Free Pass is your choice even though 2 days pass is minimum.

Hi Takeshi,
Our first trip to Japan starts within two weeks. We stay one night in Hakone. We do have JR-pass. As I can see in the comments above the Jr-pass covers Tokyo-Odawara. Do you reccomend the Hakone Free-pass to get around in Hakone? Can you tell me what the best transportation is from Hakone to Lake Kawaguchiko?
Thank you in advance! Michel
Hi Michel,
You need to get Hakone Free Pass at Odawara. JR pass does not cover anything in Hakone.
You can get Lake Kawaguchi from Gotemba by bus. Please find more info at the links below:

Hi Takeshi
I am traveling with my parents in March. We are starting with 3 night in Kyoto, then 2 nights Hakone, and then 5 nights Tokyo.
Both parents are in their sixties and are worried about handling luggage in the train and so am I as I suffer neck problems. Would you know if there is any help inside the train or if it’s easy to stow baggage?
As I’ve understood so far, from Kyoto to Hakone I’d have to take JR Tokaido Shinkansen to Odawara. Is this correct? And would I have to prior book seats? And is there anything in particular I should look out for, like changing trains?
Also, Odawara to Tokyo would be the Tokaido Shinkansen again right?
Do you think it’s worthwhile getting the JR pass if these are my only 2 train rides?
Thank you
Hi Noor,
Regarding baggage, it may be challenging. Please find more info at the link below:
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/travel-tips/baggage/managing-luggage-how-to-carry-your-baggage-on-board-and-how-to-store-your-baggage-at-the-station.html
There is no baggage help in the train. You have to handle it by yourself.
The route from Kyoto to Hakone is right. JR pass is not required. Please find more info at the link below:
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/fuji-hakone-access-guide-by-train-and-bus-from-both-tokyo-and-osaka-kyoto-nagoya.html
https://jprail.com/sample-itineraries/7days/sample-itinerary-of-osaka-kyoto-hakone-fuji-and-tokyo-classic-route.html
I recommend you to book in advance. Because it’s hard to find the seat in non reserved car side by side.
You cannot book it online. But you can book it at any major JR stations, like JR Kyoto station in advance.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you Takeshi!
No problem, Noor.

Hi Takeshi can I catch a train from Hakone to Takao? How long do you think it would take. Am looking to travel on 9th April and need to be in Takao by 11.30am.
Thanks for your attention.
Regards Roger
Hi Roger,
You have to go back to Shinjuku first to catch the rapid train to Takao. It takes 45 minutes to 1 hour from Shinjuku to Takao by JR rapid train.
So if you take early Odakyu railway express train, you can get Takao by 11:30 easily.
http://www.odakyu.jp/romancecar/timetable/
8:49 Hakone-Yumoto departure is a bit tight. You can take local train to Odawara and transfer to 8:44 Odawara departure.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Good morning Takeshi!
There’s exactly 24 hours until the beginning of my trip so please answer my last questions ^^.
I am just a bit confused of transportations in Hakone. I will use Tokyo Wide Pass to ride the shinkansen there.
1. As you wrote, after getting to Odawara we have to get off, right? Is Odawara the last station (終点) of the ride? To we need to beware of not missing the station?
2. After getting off the shinkansen, we need to move to another train in order to enjoy Hakone? There are Tozan, JR Tokaido and Shozan in your articles, are three of them go to three different places or they are just differ in terms of the Company and we choose them by the deals we are using?
3. I read your post about Hakone and Fuji 2 day pass. Since we use TOKYO WIDE PASS already, the Hakone-Fuji pass is too much for us. Instead, I found Hakone one day pass at around 1550¥. Is it worth the money and does it cover all parts of Hakone? (I am asking is the 1550¥ Hakone pass worth the money because I dont know how much train we BASICALLY need to ride in around Hakone! please answer my dummy question ^^)
Thank you very much!!!
Hi Triet,
1. You misunderstood the coverage of Tokyo Wide Pass. It does not cover Shinkansen to Odawara. Please read the following link again.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/tokyo-wide-pass-is-newer-version-of-kanto-area-pass-nikko-fuji-gala-yuzawa-and-odaiba-are-covered-by-this-pass.html#Valid_trains_and_lines
Odawara is the last station for some of rapid train. Please see the link below to find the signage and announce in the train and station.
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/travel-tips/signage-and-announcement-in-the-station-and-train.html
2. You need to take Hakone Tozan Railway to get Hakone. Once you get off JR train at Odawara, all other transportation is extra on top of Tokyo Wide Pass.
3. 1540 yen pass covers only Hakone Tozan Railway and Hakone Cablecar. If you intend to visit whole places in Hakone, you need to have Hakone Free Pass @ 4000yen for 2 days.
http://www.odakyu.jp/english/deels/freepass/hakone/
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/fuji-hakone-access-guide-by-train-and-bus-from-both-tokyo-and-osaka-kyoto-nagoya.html
Even though you need only one day, there is no choice. Actually I cannot say how much train/bus you will take in Hakone either. It depends on your plan. Everybody has different taste. So it’s impossible to find it for me either.
I just can say only one thing. If you want to see Fuji from Hakone, you need to get Lake Ashi. And you need to have Hakone Free Pass.
Fuji Hakone Pass is not your choice anyway. One day is not enough to see both Hakone and Lake Kawaguchi.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
Thank you very much.
We will use Tokyo Wide Pass to go to Gala Yuzawa by Shinkansen, to Fuji by JR Holiday Fuji (luckily JR offer that direct train on the day we intend to go Fuji). There is one day left. Since we have chance to go with Shinkansen, and Hakone trip seems to cost a lot more of both money and time, and also we won’t be able to enjoy scenery as well as black eggs in Owakudani, I guess another Shinkansen ride to Izu or Karuizawa should give us more fun!
Thank you very much ^^
Hi Triet,
You cannot take Shinkansen to Izu either. Shinkansen that depart from Tokyo to west is not covered by this pass. You can take Shinkansen to Gala Yuzawa.
Enjoy your trip.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hi Takeshi,
Then, is Karuizawa and half way to Nikko (Utsunomiya) covered by Shinkansen? ^^
Yes, Triet.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Hai Sir, Me and my family are willing to go to Japan in this week end. Fortunately my flight just similar with you, We arrive Japan by Tokyo and leave through Osaka in the next 6 days. I already booked hotel 1 night at Tokyo, 1 night at Hakone, 2 nights at Kyoto and the last 2 nights at Osaka.
But. I still looking for how to get shinkansen train to Kyoto after Hakone. I am planning to go from Hakona on July 21st afternoon. Did you have an experience for that?
Thank you.
Hi Dhanasari,
You can take “Hikari” on Shinkansen from Odawara. Please see the chapter “Access to Hakone” in the link below:

Please help.
1.) If i decided to buy JR Pass 7 days arriving from Haneda airport at 10.30pm. Should I exchanged the JR Pass next day morning at Tokyo Station (730am) = from tokyo station > Odawara Station (Buy Hakone free pass & leave luggage at Odawara Station) then take Hakone Tozan Railway > Hakone. Is this the best route for me?
Note: I need to buy hakone free pass for the hakone loop should i upgrade to “romance car”?
2.) we will stay in Hakone for a night, then from Hakone to Kyoto = Hakone Tozan Railway > Odawara > Kyoto. Is this the best route?
Thank you very much in advance for your advice.
Hi Jim,
1) Yes. As you know, you cannot exchange JR pass at Haneda in late night. Tokyo station is the best choice.
You don’t need to upgrade to Romancecar. It’s only 15 minutes trip. There is no difference between local and Romancecar in trip time.
2) Yes. You can find Shinkansen timetable at the link below. You may find Hikari that stop at Odawara.

Planning first time trip to Japan next November. Able to map from Tokyo to Hakone. What is the best way to travel from Hakone to Takayama and the estimate fare and journey time? Then from Takayama to Shirakawago, to Kyoto and finally Osaka. What would be the estimate fare and travelling time for each journey.
Hope you can help.
Thanks.
Hi Derek,
You may take Shinkansen from Odawara to Nagoya and then transfer to Limited Express Wide View Hida from Nagoya to Takayama. Please find the map and info at the links below:
https://jprail.com/destinations/chubu-area/fuji-hakone-access-guide-by-train-and-bus-from-both-tokyo-and-osaka-kyoto-nagoya.html
https://jprail.com/travel-informations/tips-for-japan-rail-pass/how-to-access-to-takayama-by-trains-and-buses.html
From Takayama to Kyoto, you can take Kanazawa route (via Shirakawago) or Nagoya route. If you want to have day trip to Shirakawago from Takayama, you may take Nagoya route. Otherwise Kanazawa route is recommended.
Regarding trip time and fare, you can get at Hyperdia.

Thank you for your helpful reply. When I added up the fares from Tokyo to Osaka it was JPY27,400 and somehow JR Pass for 7 days is JPY29,110, which is more than the normal train fares. The only advantage for having JR Pass is convenience.
Hi Derek,
If you use JR pass at both side, Osaka and Tokyo, you may spend another 2000 yen, like Kyoto-Nara at 710 yen. JR pass may be better choice for your trip.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JP Rail
Hi Takeshi,
We are also going from Hakone to Takayama on April 22. I looked on Hyperdia and am not clear what is covered by JR pass. Looks like I need to make 2 transfers:
Hakone Tozan Railway to ODAWARA
shinkansen hikari to NAGOYA
LTD. EXP HIDA 9 TO TAKAYMA.
I believe SHINKASEN is cover by JR pas. But about 2 other connections? If they are not covered by JR, how do I buy a ticket? Can I buy in Hakone or what is the best way?
Thank you so much for your help,
Maria
Hi Maria,
Hakone Tozan Railway is not covered by Ltd Exp Hida is covered. You can reserve your seat for Hida and Hikari in advance. Of course you can do it at Odawara before taking Hikari. But you can make a booking in advance before going Hakone. Most of major JR stations have reservation window. You can do it there.
Cheers,
Takeshi / JPRail.com
Thank you so much! We will be traveling on April 22nd. Do you think we need to reserve the seat on all these trains?
Maria
Hi Maria,
Reservation is recommended. In non reserved seat car, it’s sometimes to find the seat side by side. Because solo passengers took all window side.

Thank you Takeshi with a prompt reply. I wander if I can run my itinerary for you for 14 days. I made all the hotel reservations, but now am wandering if we are doing too much travel going from place . Especially, making a lot of transfers on some of the routes
Tokyo – 5 full days (includes day trips to Nikko and Kamakura)
Hokone – 1 night
Takayma – 2 nights – this most of our concerns as looks like it will take us 6-7 hours to get there from Hakone
Koyasan – 1 night – another looks like complicated trip
Osaka – 1 night
Miyajima -2 nights ( stop at Hiroshima on the way from Osaka)
Kyoto – 4 nights (includes daytrip to Nara)
1 day – Traveling from Kyoto to Narita for 7:15 pm flight home
I would greatly appreciate you advice. We are seasoned travelers, but have not been to any Asian countries.
Thank you,
Maria
Hi Maria,
Hakone-Takayama is not hard. You need to transfer at Odawara and Nagoya. But Odawara is very tourist friendly station. As you read the post above, it’s not hard to transfer. Nagoya is one of mega terminal station. But both Shinkasena and Wide View Hida are JR trains. There are lots of signage. It’s not hard to transfer either. Have you read the post below? It explain about signage in the station and train.

Takayama-Mt. Koya is more technical. You need to transfer at least three times. The easiest way is the following:
Takayama (Wide View Hida) Nagoya (Shinkansen) Shin-Osaka (subway Midousuji line) Namba (Nankai railway) Gokurakubashi (Mt. Koya)
Both subway and Nankai railway are not covered by JR pass. There are other routes to take JR trains instead of subway. But I recommend this route. You may find some info about Shin-Osaka station and Namba station at the links below:

https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/station-information/namba-stations-guide-how-to-change-the-trains-among-nankai-kintetsu-hanshin-subway-and-jr.html
If you can switch Koyasan and Osaka, your trip is easier. You have to transfer at Namba and Shin-Osaka when you go to Hiroshima from Koyasan. But if you can see the stations and train system in Osaka before going to Koyasan. You will be more familiar with Osaka. This will make your trip from Koyasan to Hiroshima be easier.

Hi Takeshi,
Thank you very much for taking time to review my itinerary. I have seen some of the posts that you mentioned, but not all of them. Your information is extremely helpful!!!
Do you think it is making scene to buy 14 days JR pass? I checked the schedule and maybe 7 days will work better of us if we start on day 7 to make sure it covers return from Kyoto to Tokyo. What would you recommend?
Thank you,
Maria
Hi Maria,
I think 14 days pass is better idea. You can use it for the last 14 days. You may use the pass to get Nikko and Kamakura too.
