Accommodation

You can find the interior of this train and the scenery from this train in my YouTube movie below. Please watch to find more information:

Wide View Hida is serviced by KIHA-85 series. This train has huge glass windows which give you the spectacular scenery along Takayama line. “Wide View” is a worthy of the name.

This series has two types of Green car that are 2+2 seat configuration and 2+1 seat configuration. 2+1 seat configuration is wider and has a bigger leg space. The leg space is 1,160mm on 2+2 seat configuration and 1,250mm on 2+1 seat configuration. 1,160mm is the standard. So 2+1 seat gives you a great deal! If you want to take this seat, try to reserved a seat on car#10. 2+2 Green car is always at the middle of the train. 2+1 is always at the front of the formation. And also Ordinary class is good too. The leg space is 1,000mm. This is bigger than the other train’s ordinary seat.

When you take this train at Nagoya, the seat is set with the back toward. Because this train change the direction at Gifu. It takes only 20 minutes from Nagoya to Gifu. You can change to the front toward if you want by yourself.

    Hello,

I would like to travel from Tokyo to Takayama using Japan Rail Pass. I’ve checked the timetable from Tokyo to Nagoya and the time is about 8AM-10:10AM.

What’s the departure time from Nagoya to Takayama closest to my arrival time (10:10AM) at Nagoya station? Or where can I find the timetable for JR Hida train?

Thank you in advance for the help as I couldn’t find the timetable for JR Hida Express.

  5. Grace says:

My family will be travelling from Nagoya to Takayama then to Matsumoto. Would it be advisable to take the ordinary seat or the green seat if I have two 24 inch luggage bag and two 21 inch luggage bags? Is there a luggage compartment for big luggages apart from the overhead ones?

I will also be taking the local train from Takayama to Minoota (JR Taita line) and on to Masumoto. Is it possible to bring luggages into such local trains?

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Grace,
It is very challenging. Most of JR trains are designed for domestic travellers. Some of the trains, such as Narita Express or other airport access trains, have some spaces for full size suitcase. But the trains do not have any luggage space basically in both ordinary and green. If your train have lots of empty seats, you can use that space to keep your luggage. But if it’s full, you need to keep your luggage at your own seat space or leave it at the entrance deck. But it is not recommended to leave your luggage there for security.
I think it is easier to have a big luggage in the local train. But please try to minimize your luggage as much as you can.

  6. Miki says:

Is there a direct train from Kyoto to Takayama? Would we need to transfer at Nagoya?

    • JPRail says:

      Hi Miki,
You can take Hida that departs from Osaka. But we have only one round trip a day. If you cannot catch this, go to Nagoya and transfer.

  7. Sy says:

    Hi,

I see that an additional service LTD.EXP (WIDEVIEW)HIDA 11, departing Nagoya at 1248hr, has been added to the schedule for the 26th Oct. This service was not shown when i checked the Hyperdia website earlier in Sep but i believe the schedule has been updated now that it is Oct. However, i noticed that it says that this is a temporary service. What are the chances that the service will be cancelled since it is a temporary service?

    • JPRail says:

      Hi Sy,
I think Hida 11 is the scheduled service. Some seasonal trains may be added. But most of seasonal trains have a bigger number, such as #61, #91.
JR Central announced they have Hida #93 (10:18@Nagoya), #94 (17:39@Takayama) on Oct 8 to 10. And #61 (06:16@Nagoya) will be added on Oct 1 and Nov3 to 6.
