Hokuriku Shinkansen, direct access to Kanazawa, Nagano and Toyama from Tokyo

This Shinkansen services are operated between Tokyo and 1988 Olympic winter game host city, Nagono via Ueno, Omiya, Takasaki and Karuizawa. This Shinkansen will be extended to Kanazawa by 2014 and this route is the original plan. This Shinkansen share the rail with Joetsu Shinkansen between Omiya and Takasaki. If you travel from Niigata to Nagano, you can transfer to Shinkansen at Takasaki station.

Route, schedule and trip time

Nagono Shinkansen’s train is given the name, “Asama”. “Asama” is named from the active volcano, “Mt. Asama” near Karuizawa. It takes about 1 hour 23 minutes from Tokyo to Nagano by the fastest Asama. But it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Tokyo to Nagano on the average. This train services are operated mostly every 20 minutes. But there are many types of Asama are operated. Stop stations are different by the trains. Please make sure which station your Asama will stop at before on board.

I am going to Yudanaka to visit an ryokan/onsen for 2 nights mid-week. I take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano. Then take a Nagano dentetsu until Yudanaka station. Are both trains covered by JR pass? If not, what is the most economical way to go? (I want to travel only by shinkansen to Nagano) Arigato

      Hi Garmon,

Nagano Dentetsu is not covered by JR Pass. Simply add single fare for Nagano Dentetsu. This is the best and the easiest way.

  8. Hi Takeshi , I’m planning to go Tateyama Kurobe nxt 3 weeks frm haneda airport. Which JR pass should I buy?Any JR rail from haneda airport? So I got to take to toyama station?

      Hi Pinky,

Do you take JR train to Toyama from Haneda and Shinano-Omachi to Haneda? If so, single fare is cheaper than any passes. If you intend to have any other trips, JR pass may be cheaper. Total fares for Haneda to Toyama and Shinano-Omachi to Haneda is slightly cheaper than JR pass 7 days. So it depends on the rest of your plan other than Tateyama Kurobe alpine route.
