Narita airport is well known as the international airport in Tokyo. But since the government allows Haneda to increase the slot of the international flights, the number of the international flights departs from and arrive at Haneda airport has been increasing in these days.

In this post, I would like to show you the access between Haneda airport and downtown Tokyo. I will explain you about the deals too.

Overview

Haneda is located in the metro Tokyo 23 municipalities. Haneda is much closer to downtown Tokyo than Narita.

You may get downtown Tokyo by Tokyo Monorail, Keikyu railway and Airport Limousine bus. In this post, I will explain about these access between airport and downtown Tokyo and some deals for these airport access. But before I explain this I would like to tell about the procedure of arrival.

How to find the way to get a bus or a train at Haneda airport international terminal

Actually it is quite simple. When you exit from the immigration and the custom area, you will see the hall, like the picture below.

You will find Airport Limousine bus ticket counter on your left hand side right after you exit from the immigration and the custom area.

Airport Limousine bus ticket counter

Just keep going straight from the exit and you will find Tokyo Monorail station and Keikyu station. Those are just a few steps away from.

Tokyo Monorail station will be on your left hand side. (C) JP Rail
Keikyu station will be on your right hand side. (C) JP Rail

It takes less than one minute to get the station from the exit of the immigration and the custom. Many station staffs are there to help you how to buy a ticket and find a direction. And also there are lots of signages in a few languages. It is very travelers friendly.

JR East Travel Service Center (JR Pass and other JR passes exchange place)

JR East Travel Service Center is next to Tokyo Monorail ticket gate. This photo was take in a few years ago. Now this travel center is bigger.

JR East has Travel Service Center at Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport International Terminal station. You can exchange/purchase JR pass, JR East Pass, Tokyo Wide Pass and some more JR deals here. You can start using the pass right after you arrive at Haneda in Japan if you like. Please see the link below to find the detailed information:

JR East official site – Haneda Airport service center

If you arrive at Haneda in very early morning or very late night, you may not be able to exchange/purchase Pass. Shinagawa station or Tokyo station is the substitute choice.

JR Pass and all JR deals cover Tokyo Monorail only. You cannot take Keikyu Railway, Airport Limousine bus and any other bus services.

Tokyo Monorail

Tokyo Monorail runs between Haneda airport and Hamamatsucho. It takes 18 minutes by the fastest train, “Haneda Express” which stops at a few major stations only. It takes 23 minutes by other monorail trains.

Hamamatsucho is three stations away from Tokyo station by JR Yamanote line. If you want to take the Shinkansen to Nagoya, Kyoto or Osaka after arrival at Haneda, you have to take Yamanote line to get Tokyo station.

You may find the information about Hamamatsucho station in the post below:

If you use JR Pass or other JR rail passes, Tokyo Monorail is covered and you may take this. However if you Keikyu Railway, you can get Shinagawa directly from Haneda and catch the Shinkansen to Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. Even though Keikyu is not covered by JR Pass or other JR deals, please consider to pay extra and get Keikyu railway. It is much easier to take the Shinkansen to Nagoya, Kyoto or Osaka. I will explain about Keihin Kyuko Railway later.

If you take the Shinkansen to get Kanazawa, Toyama, Sendai, Hakodate, you can get Tokyo station by Tokyo Monorail and Yamanote line. You cannot catch the Shinkansen to these places at Shinagawa.

But Airport Limited Express is operated in daytime only. Most of trains are Airport Express. This train stops all stations between Haneda terminal and Keikyu-Kamata. And also it stops at a few stations between Keikyu-Kamata and Shinagawa. It takes about 25 minutes by Airport Express.

Keikyu Railway also runs on Toei Subway Asakusa line. Please see the route map at the beginning in this post. That means you can get Asakusa and other stations on Toei Subway directly from Haneda. Most of Airport Limited Express and Airport Express go through this subway line.

    Hi Takeshi,

My partner and I will be travelling parts of Japan for exactly 8 days after snowboarding up north. The dilemma is that we will purchase a 7 day JR rail pass, but need a 1 day pass per person for that first day that we arrive. We arrive at Haneda airport around midday and are staying in inner tokyo, just wondering which rail pass is appropriate for us to purchase for this region only for the single day?

    Thanks for your time,

    Aimee

    hi there!

I am arriving into Haneda at 22:30 on Saturday Nov. 17th, 2012…. I have a 9 hour layover in Tokyo so I wanted to go into the city….is monorail the best option at that time? Also, what stop should I get off if I want to explore the main area of Tokyo city Saturday night… Any suggestions on places to go? Restaurants, music lounges, etc…

Also, I have a flight back out at 7am next day, so I have to be at the airport at 5am… anyway I can get back to Tokyo Haneda without using a taxi? I don’t want to spend 8-10K Yen if possible…

    thank you!

    Hi,

I am arriving at Haneda Airport on 18th December 2012, 11pm.

How do I take the trains or subway to go to my hotel, New Otani Inn Hotel, Osaki, Shinagawa-ku, Shinagawa, Tokyo. What is the cost?

What other ways can I go to my hotel and how much is the cost? Airport taxi or other cab?

    Hi Takeshi

From Haneda airport, how do I go to blue wave inn asakusa? I’ll be travelling with my 2 kids and will be staying in this hotel as this is my first time in Japan.

Then from blue wave, I have to go to narita airport to catch a flight. Is there airport bus going to this hotel?

  8. Misaki says:

Hi I want to ask, I’ll be arriving at Haneda Airport at 11pm(if there are no delays) on the 27th of August next month. I use this site http://www.hyperdia.com/en/ to find out travel routes. Can I make it in time using trains to go to Ikebukuro Station? Taking into account having to go through customs, walking around the airport and the stations too. ぎりぎりじゃない? I find it hard to find out when are the last trains for certain stations as their sites are hard to navigate around and I don’t think they even have the schedules up.

  9. Simon says:

    Hi Takeshi,

For the Japan Rail Pass holder, do we need to change a ticket for the monorail
to HND airport or just go through the manned gate.

    Thanks

  10. dennis in osaka says:

Thank you for this information. I am trying to connect a late arrival into Haneda with a late night bus out of Shinjuku to Osaka.
The Keikyu train and monorail information to and from Haneda is very useful. (and taxi fare as well) One piece of information I have looked for on various sites is:

Which is easier for the bag-laden traveler to make a transfer to or from the JR-Yamanote train line?
    Shinagawa or Hamamatsucho ?

Almost like, in which station will a handicapped traveler be easier to manage a transfer?

    Thank you

    • JPRail says:

      Hi dennis,

I think almost same. Look at the station map on the following links:
      http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/stations/e1248.html
      http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/stations/e788.html

Hamamatsucho is much smaller than Shinagawa. It looks easier. But Yamanote line platform at Shinagawa is very closed to Keikyu-JR transfer gate. And also elevators at both station are located near transfer gate of Keikyu-JR and Monorail-JR too. I cannot find a big difference between Hamamatsucho and Shinagawa. If you go to Shinjuku after transfer to Yamanote line, Shinagawa is a bit faster.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail
