Narita airport is well known as the international airport in Tokyo. But since the government allows Haneda to increase the slot of the international flights, the number of the international flights departs from and arrive at Haneda airport has been increasing in these days.

In this post, I would like to show you the access between Haneda airport and downtown Tokyo. I will explain you about the deals too.

Overview

Haneda is located in the metro Tokyo 23 municipalities. Haneda is much closer to downtown Tokyo than Narita.

You may get downtown Tokyo by Tokyo Monorail, Keikyu railway and Airport Limousine bus. In this post, I will explain about these access between airport and downtown Tokyo and some deals for these airport access. But before I explain this I would like to tell about the procedure of arrival.

How to find the way to get a bus or a train at Haneda airport international terminal

Actually it is quite simple. When you exit from the immigration and the custom area, you will see the hall, like the picture below.

You will find Airport Limousine bus ticket counter on your left hand side right after you exit from the immigration and the custom area.

Airport Limousine bus ticket counter

Just keep going straight from the exit and you will find Tokyo Monorail station and Keikyu station. Those are just a few steps away from.

Tokyo Monorail station will be on your left hand side. (C) JP Rail
Keikyu station will be on your right hand side. (C) JP Rail

It takes less than one minute to get the station from the exit of the immigration and the custom. Many station staffs are there to help you how to buy a ticket and find a direction. And also there are lots of signages in a few languages. It is very travelers friendly.

JR East Travel Service Center (JR Pass and other JR passes exchange place)

JR East Travel Service Center is next to Tokyo Monorail ticket gate. This photo was take in a few years ago. Now this travel center is bigger.

JR East has Travel Service Center at Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport International Terminal station. You can exchange/purchase JR pass, JR East Pass, Tokyo Wide Pass and some more JR deals here. You can start using the pass right after you arrive at Haneda in Japan if you like. Please see the link below to find the detailed information:

JR East official site – Haneda Airport service center

If you arrive at Haneda in very early morning or very late night, you may not be able to exchange/purchase Pass. Shinagawa station or Tokyo station is the substitute choice.

JR Pass and all JR deals cover Tokyo Monorail only. You cannot take Keikyu Railway, Airport Limousine bus and any other bus services.

Keikyu is one of the major private railway companies in Tokyo. This railway connects Haneda airport and Shinagawa. It takes 16 to 18 minutes by the fastest train, Airport Limited Express. But Airport Limited Express is operated in daytime only. Most of trains are Airport Express. This train stops all stations between Haneda terminal and Keikyu-Kamata. And also it stops at a few stations between Keikyu-Kamata and Shinagawa. It takes about 25 minutes by Airport Express.

Shinagawa is one of the biggest terminal stations in downtown Tokyo. And as I mentioned above, the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka stops at Shinagawa. You can change the trains easily in Shinagawa. Please find the information about Shinagawa station in the post below:

Keikyu Railway also runs on Toei Subway Asakusa line. Please see the route map at the beginning in this post. Keikyu Railway, Toei Subway and Keisei Railway are connected and these three company’s trains go through each other. That means you can get Asakusa and other stations on Toei Subway directly from Haneda. Most of Airport Limited Express and Airport Express go through this subway line.

As I told you above, if you stay at the major hotel in other areas in Tokyo, you may take Airport Limousine bus.

  1. Christine Chay says:

    Hello,

We have a group of 7 (6 adults and 1 child), will be traveling to Tokyo in January 2011. Our flight touches down Haneda airport at 22:40hr (Air Asia). Prior to leaving Malaysia, we will purchase the 7-day JR pass. On the day of arrival, we DO NOT want to exchange the JR pass. Instead we take either train / bus to check-in a nearby hotel in Kamata area. The next day, we will exchange the JR pass either in Haneda airport or Shinjuku station because we will take Shinkanshen to Osaka and from there we explore Kyoto, Nara, Kobe…

    My question is :-

Upon arrival, what is the best and easiest way from Haneda airport to go to Kamata station ? Reason being my mom is 72 years old + my daughter is 10 years. After a long haul flight, we just want them to take a good rest before we start our journey. Or do you recommend us to stay around Keikyu Kamata Station (direct train from Haneda) ?

Currently, we have booked our accommodation at Mystays Inn Kamata. If it is convenient, how far to walk from Keikyu Kamata Station to Mystays Inn Kamata ?

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Christine,
Mystay Inn Kamata is near JR Kamta station. It is about 600m between Keikyu Kamata and JR Kamata. It takes about 10 minutes by walk. But do you want to walk midnight with your luggage? If you don’t want, take a cab from Keikyu Kamata station. It will be 600 to 800 yen. But you need two cab for your group. I think you can catch a cab at Keikyu Kamata station. Of course you can catch a cab at Haneda. It cost about 3590 yen per cab.
And why do you go to Shinjuku to exchange the pass? You cannot catch Shinkansen at Shinjuku. May you mix up Shinjuku with Shinagawa. You need to go to Shinagawa station or Tokyo station. I recommend you to go to Shinagawa because it is closest. Of course you can exchange your pass at either Shinagawa or Tokyo. : )

    Hello,

I am arriving at Haneda Airport at 10:30 pm from Malaysia. Immediately after arriving, I plan to take a flight to the United States leaving at 12:45 am. Do you think this will give me enough time to pick up my baggage and go through customs to make my second flight?

    Thank you for your response!

I have a flight from haneda at 6.26am. If i take the limo bus from shinjuku at 4.30am ti reach haneda at 5.15am will i make it on time?

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Claire,
It will be very tight. It maybe okay. But I cannot guarantee it. Basically you need to be airport 2 hours prior to departure time.

  4. Jane says:

I am arriving at Haneda airport by Airasia at 22.30 on Sunday. Do you know which terminal? Does the Excel hotel in Terminal 2 have special price for latecomers?

I am afraid we might miss the last train to Bakurocho (or Tokyo) station. If we go to Tokyo station is it expensive to tak cab to Bakurocho? We wanted to stay at a budget hotel there. Please advise whether it is possible to get there after midnight and not by cab. Thanks you!

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Jane,
Usually the international flight arrive at International Terminal. But please make sure the airline. I have never heard that Excel Hotel has the special rate for the late comers. But keep checking their website. They might have some special rate.
If you take a cab from Tokyo station to Bakurocho, it will be around 1100 yen. It is not expensive.
If you miss the bus or train at Haneda, unfortunately the cab is only way.

  5. Laura says:

    Hello Takeshi!

I am staying in Hamamatsucho and have an international flight at 7:00 am at Haneda. If I take the earliest monorail ride to the airport, do you think I will have enough time to make it through customs?

Thank you for answering so many questions!

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Laura,
The first monorail departs from Hamamatsucho at 04:58. It will be Haneda around 05:15 to 05:20. I think you will be able to make it. It usually takes 15 minutes to complete custom and immigration.

  6. Amy says:

    Hi

I will be arriving at HND International Airport at 11.05pm. I am trying to book a hotel at Ueno.

I hope I can clear the immigration in time to catch last train out to downtown Tokyo to switch train to Ueno. What is the last train running on the Yamanote line?

If I can’t, I will take last bus to Shinjuku at 12.40am and catch a cab to Ueno. Is this the best option and how much will it cost to take taxi from Shinjuku to Ueno?

Thank you for your kind advice!

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Amy,
The last train depart from Hamamatsucho at 00:31, and 00:21 from Shinagawa.
I don’t know the exact fare to Ueno by Cab. But it will be more than 5000yen. It is not cheap. I recommend you to take cab from Haneda to Ueno direcly. It is not much difference from taking a cab from Shinjuku.

    Hi Takeshi-San,
Thank you so much for this wonderful web page – it is very helpful.
I am arriving at Haneda airport around 5.30am and will be travelling from there to Namba station in Osaka.
I will not be in a hurry so do not need to take the fastest route; actually, I would like to take a route that might enable me to see some nice scenery and/or travel on some interesting trains.
    What would you recommend?
    Kind regards,
    Ramon

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Ramon,
I recommend you to take Azusa and Shinano via Matsumoto in Nagano prefecture.

Shinjuku – (Limited Express Azusa) – Matsumoto – (Limited Express Shinano) – Nagoya – (Tokaido Shinkansen) – Shinosaka

You may see Mt. Fuji, Akaishi Moutains (a.k.a. Southern Alps) and Lake Suwa from Azusa. Transfer to Shinano at Matsumoto. Shinano goes along Kiso river. If you take Shinano #16 at Matsumoto, you don’t need to transfer the train at Nagoya, because this Shinano go to Osaka. Otherwise take Tokaido Shinkansen at Nagoya.

    Hi Takeshi-san,

I’m arriving Haneda Int’l Airport at 0515hrs. What is the best route to take to get to Hotel Villa Fontaine Kayabacho ?

    Regards,

    • JPRail says:

      Hello SiewChin,
Take Keihin Kyuko from Haneda. Most of Keihin Kyuko trains go through Toei Subway Ginza line. Transfer Subway from Toei Subday Ginza line to Tokyo Metro Tozai line at Nihonbashi. Kayabacho is next station on Tokyo Metro Tozai line.

        Hi Takeshi-san,

Tks for speedy response. Tis is my first trip to Japan so I need to check with u if tis is the way to go.

        1) Buy Keikyu Tokyo Travel 2 Day Pass. Understand that tis ticket only covers Toei Line but not Tokyo Metro Line right ?

        2) Take Keikyu train to Sengakuji change to Asakusa Line. From Asakusa Line go to Nihombashi. From Nihombashi take Tozai line to Kayabacho. Is this the best route ?

        3) I depart from Haneda early flight 0625hrs. From Kayabacho, I can take same route as in (2) back to Haneda right ? What is the time I should leave Kayabacho in order to reach Haneda airport before midnight ?

        Regards,

          Yes.

Most of times, you don’t need to change the train at Sengakuji. Most of Keikyu trains go through Toes Asakusa line.

Unfortunately it is too early to access to Haneda by train. You need to take the last train a day before your departure date or take a cab. If you take a cab, it will be very expensive. I do not have an exact fare. But you need to expect more than 5000yen.

    Takeshi-san,

I will be arriving Haneda airport at 5:15am and need to catch the Tohoku Shinkansen to Aomori. I will be getting a JR East Pass before I come to Japan. I have got 2 questions:

    1. Can I exchange the JR East Pass at Haneda Airport at that hour(too early?)
    2. Which line should I take (Keihin Kyuko ?) and which station should I get on and off to change to Tohoku Shinkansen?(I heard it’s Ueno station)

    Thanks,
    FP

    • JPRail says:

      Hello FP,
1.Please see the list of the station where you can exchange the pass in the following link.
      http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/eastpass_sp/#locations
      I think it’s too early.
2.You can take either way Monorail or Keihin Kyuko. You will transfer to Yamanote line at Shinagawa (Keihin Kyuko) or Hamamatsucho (Monorail). You don’t need to go to Ueno. You can catch the Tohoku Shinkansen at Tokyo. I think you can exchange the pass at Tokyo stations too.

Hi.. Mr.Takeshi , I will arrive Haneda airport at 9:30 PM. Is there any place that I can exchange the JR voucher to the JR pass. I mean other place in downtown. Normally for the Hamanasu, How many days in advance should I reserve the carpet car for 10 people.

    Thank you very much

    • JPRail says:

      Hello Nirun,
Unfortunately you cannot exchange to the pass on same day. Please see this page on Japan Rail Pass official site.
If you like to get the 10 seats on Carpet car, it will be very difficult. I think you need to make a reservation right after they start to sell on 1 month before the departure date. Because Carpet car is almost sold out everyday. This is the most popular seat on Hamanasu. But I cannot say anything with 100% confidence. So just try to get it right after you get your pass.
