  1. Takeshi,
This is very useful information. I am traveling for the first time to Japan from September 10 to September 18, 2019. I am reading all about it to find the best in a short time. I decided I want to see nature and onsen
I arrive to Tokyo on 9/11, and leaving on the 3rd day to Kyoto, September 13.
However, I was wondering if I can go to Hakone on my way to Kyoto for one day and how long will it take or if I need to stay one night in Hakone and leave for Tokyo in the morning. I don’t see direct trains or an easy route.
If my trip involves Tokyo , Kyoto and possible Hakone, is a rail pass a good choice? Is there a train I can take to Kyoto from Tokyo that will show nice views of the area, in case Hakone is not possible.

    1. Hi Nelly,

I recommend you to use the deal in the link below for the first 2 days in your trip:
      https://www.tokyometro.jp/en/ticket/airport_bus/index.html

And then you may start using JR Pass 7-day for the rest of your trip:
      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/japan-rail-pass-user-guide-how-to-use-jr-pass-to-its-maximum.html

You may drop by Hakone on the way to Kyoto as day trip. You may take the early departure Shinkansen from Tokyo to Odawara. And get Hakone Free Pass to visit the places in Hakone. And then take the late Shinkansen train to Kyoto. You may find some idea in the link below:

    1. Hi Eunice san,

It’s hard to find the deal to cover all trips. But if you get Nagano from Tokyo, you may be able to use JR East Pass Nagano Niigata:
      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/jr-east-pass-niigata-and-nagano-flex-5-days-pass-in-14-days-period-to-cover-kanto-region-nagano-and-niigata.html

There is no deals to cover Fuji to Osaka. But if you are okay with overnight bus, you can get it in the link below:
      http://bus-en.fujikyu.co.jp/highway/detail/id/9

JR West Kansai Area Pass 1-day is the choice for day 41.
      https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/how-to-use-jr-west-kansai-area-pass-compare-pass-and-single-fare.html

But you cannot take the Shinkansen to get Himeji by this pass. You have to take Special rapid from Osaka.

  4. Good Evening! Happy令和元年!!!
On Saturday 6th July we want to go from Utsonomiya JR train station to Ring Twin Motegi by bus. We dont know how or where to reserve two seats, go and return. Its very important for us because its a main visit and I dont find how to do it. We have bought JR Japan pass. Could you inform me, please?
    Thanks, Arigato!
    María Casado

    1. Hi Maria,

There is only one round trip available and this bus is the regular scheduled bus. You cannot book a seat.
      Utsunomiya 8:59 – 10:17 Twin Ring Motegi
      Twin Ring Motegi 15:40 – 17:11 Utsunomiya

I believe JR pass covers this bus but even the official JR pass site does not mention clearly. It may not be covered. The fare is 1,540 yen per adult one way. Please prepare the fare by cash in case that it’s not covered.

      Cheers,

  5. Dear Takeshi san,
I would like to ask for advice about my trip from Ueno to Nagano/Niigata using JR East Nagano/Niigata pass.
    1. I want to go on joyful trains in this area, this is the plan
Sunday 17/11 – Ueno-Nagano—->Oykot train to Tokamachi—->local train to Echi Yuzawa —->Genbi shinkansen to Niigata.
    Is this trip plan possible?
    2. When is the 1st day to count toward 5 days of using JR East ,some said it will count the day of exchanging the pass as the 1st day ,is this true?
Looking forward to hearing advice /answer from you ,also trip to Japan.
    Regards
    Mattika

    1. Hi Mattika san,

      1. If Oykot runs on same timetable as the current one, you can do it. At this point, the timetable for October and November has not been released yet. It will come up in late August.

      2. When you exchange the pass, you can decide which day you will start using the pass. It is not the day when you exchange it.

      Cheers,
