  1. Dear Takeshi San,

We will take a 7-day trip to Japan during the last week of June. Would appreciate your kind advice for the best deals for JR / travel passes for our following planned itinerary :

Day 1 – Arriving Haneda Airport at 10:15pm from Malaysia.
    Day 2 – Tokyo
Day 3 – Leaving Tokyo for Nagoya via domestic flight (have to fly as Tokyo is a stopover of our return air-tickets). ETA Nagoya 6:35pm
Day 4 – Depart from Nagoya JR Station by the Limited Express “Wide View Shinano” (approx. 2hr) – Matsumoto Station (JR Ooito Line approx. 1hr) to Shinano Omachi Station .
Day 5 – Start a Alpine Route one-way day trip from Omachi Onsen-Kyo in the morning. Finish at Toyama Toyama, then depart for Nagoya at 19:37 (Hokuriku Shinkansen Kagayaki 513) – Kanazawa 19:56
    Kanazawa 20:06 – (Limited Express Shirasagi 66) – Maibara 22:01
    Maibara 22:11 – (Tokaido Shinkansen Kodama 696) – Nagoya 22:35.
    Day 5 & 6 – Nagoya
Day 7 – Leaving Nagoya for Tokyo (Narita Airport) by domestic flight and then fly back to Malaysia from there.

    Thank you very much.

    1. Hi Penny san,

Please see the link below to find info for Haneda-Tokyo-Haneda.

Unfortunately there is no deals after arrival at Nagoya airport other than Tateyama Kuobe option ticket for Shino-Omachi to Toyama.

Single fare is only choice for other part of trip. Please use hyperdia to check the fare.

If you can stay in Takayama one night after Alpine route, you can use the pass in the link below:

This pass does not cover Toyama-Kanazawa-Maibara-Nagoya. And also you will be too late to go back to Nagoya via Takayama route. If you use this pass, you need to stay in Toyama or Takayama.

In Nagoya, subway pass is most common choice.

Single ticket is only choice for Nagoya – Airport.

  4. Dear Takeshi,
I am planning to Tokyo this end of Mei, From Tokyo take JR to Kanazawa and stayed 1 night. from Kanazawa go to Osaka by JR.
Please advice is there any Bus go to Shirakawa-go and Gokayama. Do we have to booked and reserve the Bus ?
If you have the name of the Bus , I need the website .
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
    Thank you.

  5. Hi Takeshi,

    I am Macy from Malaysia.

My visit to Japan is from 14/12/2017 to 23/12/2017 with total 2 adults and 1 kids at 6 yo.

Will arrive at KIX airport on 15/12/2017 at about 5.40am
So i will stay one night in Osaka.

I’ve temporary plan to get to Takayama on the next day which is 16/12, then stay one night in Takayama, and the next day 17/12 only visit to Shirakawa-go and back then back to Takayama, and from Takayama return to Kyoto.

I wish to know which pass should i purchase to access from Osaka to Takayama and then how to go Shirakawa-go from Takayama?

After that from Takayama return back to Kyoto have to buy another different pass?

How about from Kyoto to Kobe? Then from Kyoto back to Osaka.

I am really confuse with those pass, and train and bus with visit from cities to cities.

Your kind of help will be much appreciated.

    1. Hi Macry,

Takayama Hokuriku area pass is only choice. This pass includes bus to Shirakawago.

But if you use this pass, you cannot get Takayama directly. You need to take the route via Kanazawa. If you don’t want to take this route, your choice is regular ticket only. Takayama Hokuriku area pass covers Kansai airport to Osaka too.

For Kobe, Osaka and Kyoto, Kansai thru pass is most useful choice.

But your plan has not been fixed completely yet. There are many deals but I cannot say Kansai thru pass is the best one or not. Please design the detailed trip plan. And then you can find the best deal.

  6. I plan to travel to Niigate and Nagano area in next Feb. (winter). I need to know which JR lines are closed for the winter, so I can plan my trip better.

  7. Dear Takeshi, Do you have any further information on planned closure dates for Hokkaido railway lines, including the Sasshō Line, and the lines to Rumoi and Yubari, plus any information on the plans for third sector conversion or closure for other lines in Hokkaido?

Is there a good online resource for planned railway line closures in Japan?

I would like to catch all of them before they close!

    1. Hi Andrew,

Those lines which you mentioned will be closed sooner or later. But at this point, the official announcement has not been stated yet. JR Hokkaido has announced that those lines cannot be held without government support. Only city of Yubari agreed with JR Hokkaido and they have just started to discuss after closure. But the date has not been decided for even Yubari line.

Most of municipality government did not agree at this point.

There is no online resources. Only JR Hokkaido press release and major new paper are only resources.

      1. Thanks Takeshi!

I’m especially wondering about the train to Shin-Totsukawa which only seems to have a single service a day!

For anybody else interested the best article that I have found is:

According to Wikipedia (which seems to reference the above article) the line to Shin-Yubari will close on the 31 March 2019.ō_Line

Hopefully other lines would have a similarly long lead time before closure, but there is always the possibility that weather or earthquakes may determine their fate, as it has for a couple of sections already in Hokkaido.

  8. Hi, I am travelling from Obihiro to Furano on 6 June 17.
I saw information about Shintoku is closes due to damaged.
Please advise if there is other economical and short way to get to Furano? Thank you

    1. Hi Li Fang,

Substitute bus runs between Shintoku and Higashishikagoe. You need to change bus and trains at Higashishikagoe to Furano. Unfortunately Japanese link is only available. Please see the lower part of page 2. 5 departure from Shintoku is available, from 07:52, 10:49…18:38. 06:08 is not Shintorku departure.

If you have train ticket from Obihiro to Furano or other deals, such as JR pass, Hokkaido rail pass, this bus service is covered.

  10. Dear Takeshi
My family and I will be reaching New Chitose Airport in the evening. We would like to know if we could buy the JR Hokkaido economic ticket (special plan between Sapporo and Asahikawa) from the airport.

    Thank you in advance.
