Miyazaki to Udo Jingu shrine one day trip by a local bus and the limited express train Umisachi-Yamasachi.

2012 spring trip to Kyushu
Udo Jingu shrine is located at Nichinan coast. It is very scenic! (C) JP Rail

Udo Jingu shrine (鵜戸神宮) was one of the place where I really loved to go. When I had a trip to Takachiho, I had a time to go there. I use a local bus on the way and get on cruising train Umisachi-Yamasachi on the way back from Udo Jingu shrine.I would like to show you how to access to Udo Jingu shrine by both transportation.

My itinerary and summary of access to Udo Jingu shrine

Udo Jingu can be accessed by local bus only. We can catch this bus at several Japan Railway’s stations, Miyazaki (宮崎), Miyazaki airport (宮崎空港), Aoshima (青島), Aburatsu (油津) and Obi (飫肥). If you use Japan Rail Pass and want to minimize your extra cost, try to catch a bus at Aburatsu. This station is the closest station to Udo Jingu shrine.

When I had a trip to Udo Jingu, I caught a bus at Miyazaki airport. Because I visited Takachiho before this trip. I got on limited express Nichirin from Nobeoka to Miyazaki airport. Most of limited express Nichirin connect to Miyazaki airport. It is easy to transfer from train to bus and the fare is a bit cheaper than getting on at Miyazaki station. And also that is one of the reason why I would fry back to Osaka by the flight. I wanted to check in the baggage before going Udo Jingu.

Anyway my itinerary was the following:

March 18, 2012
08:15 Depart from Takachiho bus center by local bus to Nobeoka (Link to My trip to Takachiho)
09:45 Arrive at Nobeoka station
10:28 Depart from Nobeoka station by limited express Nichirin 3
11:47 Arrive at Miyazaki Airport station
13:07 Depart from Miyazaki Airport by Miyzaki Kotsu local bus to Obi via Udo Jingu and Aburatsu
14:05 Arrive at Udo Jingu iriguchi (iriguchi means “entrance”)
15:20 Depart from Udo Jingu iriguchi by Miyazaki Kotsu local bus to Obi via Aburatsu
15:41 Arrive at Aburatsu station
15:50 Depart from Aburatsu station by limited express Umisachi-Yamasachi
17:11 Arrive at Minami Miyazaki station
17:13 Depart from Minami Miyazaki station by local train
17:18 Arrive at Miyazaki Airport station
I flew back to Itami (Osaka) airport.

I use the bus on the way and the train on the way back. I tell you about both bus and train.

Miyazaki Kotsu Bus (宮崎交通バス)

Common commute bus is used for this route. (C) JP Rail

This is operated by a common commute bus. It is not operated by a highway motor coach. I think most of you take this bus from Miyazaki station or Miyazaki Airport station. Since this bus service is a commute service, there are some many bus stops on the way and it runs very slow. I recommend you to take this bus from Miyazaki Airport station to shorten your trip time.

Fare

One day pass gives you a good deal! (C) JP Rail

It is 1,480 yen between Miyazaki station and Udo Jingu. It is 580 yen between Udo Jingu and Aburatsu. But forget about this regular fare if you use the bus from Miyazaki station or Miyazaki airport. Because Miyazaki Kotsu sell 1 day unlimited ride pass at 1,800 yen. Even though I travelled from Miyazaki station to Udo Jingu and from Udo Jingu to aburatsu, 1 day pass was still cheaper than regular fare. You can buy this pass at Miyazaki station bus center, Miyazaki airport bus stop, Aburatsu station bus center, Nobeoka station bus center, Takachiho bus center and many more places in Miyazaki.

I made a huge mistake! I got on the bus from Takachiho to Nobeoka station too in same day as trip to Udo Jingu. Both bus from Takachiho to Nobeoka and to Udo Jingu are operated by same company, Miyazaki Kotsu. If I bought this one day pass at Takachiho, I could make a big save. But I forgot to buy a pass before I got on the bus from Takachiho. This pass cannot be bought in the bus. Don’t make a same mistake as me! 🙂

This one day pass covers all local bus services in Miyazaki prefecuture that are operated by Miyazaki Kotsu. It does not cover any express bus services and the bus goes to other prefectures. If you will use the train to Aburatsu both way and get on the bus at Aburatsu, the fare will be 1,140 yen for the round trip. Single fare is cheaper than one day pass.

Bus stops

Miyazaki Airport station is located at west end of terminal building. (C) JP Rail

Miyazaki station

First of all, get off Miyazaki station from west exit (西口). Please refer this page of Miyazaki Kotsu website. Look at the map on the top of page. You see “西1”, “西2”, “西3”, “西4”, “A”, “B” and “C” in the map. The bus to Udo Jingu stop at 西3. Take the bus that has route 965 to Aburatsu and Obi (965系統/油津・飫肥行き). If you want to buy one day pass at Miyazaki station bus center, it is located around “B” in above map. It is not complicated. You can find it easily.

Miyazaki airport

If you arrive at Miyazaki Airport station, there is only one exit and it is located at the terminal building. It is small airport and easy to find the location. The bus stop is located at other end of the terminal building. Walk about 50m from the exit of station, you will see a bus stop and small ticket booth. You can buy one day ticket there.

I took this picture when the bus just passed by Michi no Eki Phoenix. (C) JP Rail

Michi no Eki Phoenix

This is not related to Udo Jingu. But this is the best view point of this route. Nichinan Coast is one of the best drive route in Japan. Michi no Eki Phoenix is just located in the middle between Miyazaki and Udo Jingu shrine along Nichinan Coast. There are a restaurant, a souvenir shop and a view point. I visited there in cloudy day. You can see the beautiful images when it is sunny.

I regretted that I couldn’t get off the bus there. I should have done the following schedule:

12:12 Depart from Miyazaki Airport by Miyzaki Kotsu local bus to Obi via Udo Jingu and Aburatsu (I could take this bus. But I had a lunch at the airport and took 13:07 departure bus)
12:42 Arrive at Michi no Eki Phoenix and take a lunch there
13:37 Depart from Michi no Eki Phoenix by Miyazaki Kotsu local bus
14:05 Arrive at Udo Jingu iriguchi (iriguchi means “entrance”)

By the way, Michi no Eki (道の駅) means road side station. It is a rest stop. But usually Michi no Eki focus on more local. They sell the variety of local products and serve a local food. If you have a time, take some rest there and enjoy local taste.

Udo Jingu iriguchi bus stop is one of those bus stops. You cannot see any shrine at bus stop. (C) JP Rail

Udo Jingu iriguchi

This bus stop is located in local residential area. It doesn’t look like the bus stop where is the closet to Udo Jingu. But you will see the white pole sign at the other side of bus stop. And Udo Jingu iriguchi bus stop is located right after short tunnel. You may be able to find this white pole sign right after the bus get off the tunnel at the right hand side. After you get off the bus, please refer these following images.

One of readers gave me updated information. Now the bus goes in the parking, the second image below. So forget about the bus stop above. Now it is much easier to access Udo Jingu by bus.

I spent 1 hour and 15 minutes to see everything there.

Aburatsu station

JR Kyushu Nichinan line Aburatsu station (C) JP Rail

This is the easiest bus stop in this route. The bus stop is located just in front of the station. You cannot miss it.
As you saw my schedule above, I had only 9 minutes to transfer to limited express Umisachi-Yamasachi. If the bus arrive on time, it was completely no problem. But the bus was late about 5 minutes. It was very tight. Please be careful if you do this schedule.

Nichinan line and Limited Express Umisachi-Yamasachi

Umisachi-Yamasachi stop at Obi station for 10 minutes. You can buy some local food. at the platform

If you really want to save your extra cost on JR Pass or Kyushu Rail Pass, you can take a train from Miyazaki to Aburatsu. There is only one round trip of the Limited Express Umisachi-Yamasachi on weekends only. In other days, your choice is only a local train. Nichinan line is a rustic local line. There are only about 15 round trips between Miyazaki and Aburatsu. It takes 1 hour 30 minutes to access to Aburatsu from Miyazaki. So please check both train schedule and bus schedule from Aburatsu to Udo Jingu.

In my trip, I got on Umisachi-Yamasachi on the way back to Miyazaki from Aburatsu. I heard this is very popular train. So I booked my ticket right after tickets were on sale. But when I got on, there were lots of empty seats. I think the reason why it was Sunday but not high season.

I was very impressed the atmosphere and service by attendant in this train. I really enjoyed it. But Nichinan line goes through more mountain side than road. I had much better view of Nichinan Coast from the local bus on the way to Udo Jingu. If you expect lots of nice view on this train, you may be disappointed. I still recommend you to get on this train if you have a chance. But don’t expect so many chances to watch the view from this train. If you want more details about this train, please see the post below:

    Hi Takeshi!

Great post! I’m planning to follow your route.
Do you know where I can get the complete bus stops and schedule for Miyako Kotsu Bus? I’m a bit worried about the 5 minute transfer time from Bus to Train in Aburatsu Station, So I was thinking to depart from the opposite direction at Nichinan Station.

    Thanks!

  2. AJ says:

    Hi Takeshi,

I have same plan to travel from Takachicho Gorge to Miyazaki and stay for 2 nights. I plan to cover Aoshima- Nichinan Coast-Sun Messe-Michi no eki phoenix-Udo Jingu- Obi. I will be there on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday leaving for Kagoshima. Since Sun Messe, Michi no eki phoenix and Udo Jingu are not reachable by JR, I plan to use the Miyazaki bus pass (1000 Yen for tourist). Is it still worthwhile for me to purchase the Kyushu South JR pass for 3 days (Wed/ Thur/ Fri). I have no chance to take limited express Umisachi-Yamasachi since it only operates on weekends.

    • Hi AJ,

If you take limited express train from Nobeoka to Miyazaki and from Miyazaki to Kagoshima, southern Kyushu rail pass is slightly cheaper than regular fare. Otherwise single ticket is better choice.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • AJ says:

        Hi Takeshi,

Does Miyazaki bus pass cover Nobeoka to Miyazaki? If not, guess it is better for me to purchase the Kyushu South JR pass.

Appreciate if you could confirm if my understanding of the use of pass is appropriate for below. Any improvement you could suggest for my itineary?

    Hi Takeshi,
I’d like to go around Miyazaki, I’d like to visit Aoshima, Sun Messe Nichinan, and Udo Jingu shrine.
Kindly advice what is the best route and transportation to visit those places. Anw, I will depart from Miyasaki station since I have JR Pass.
    Thanks for your advice.

    • Hi Christine,

Basically you can follow same route as I did before. Sun Messe is located between Aoshima and Udo-Jingu.
But you can take a local train to get Aoshima by JR pass. And after visiting Aoshima, take bus from Aoshima to Sun Messe, then Udo Jingu. After Udo-Jingu, take same route as my trip.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  4. Joe Pan says:

Thanks Takeshi-San for your reply on the access of osaki-shimozima.

  5. Joe Pan says:

    Hi Takeshi-San,
Could you kindly give me some advice for my itinerary please.

Day1-3: kagoshima. Day trips lbusuki and kirishima.
Day4: miyazaki. aoshima and obi by yumisachi -yamasachi.
Day5: with the ¥1800pass visit udo-jingu then jr to nobeoka then bus to taka chiho and Stay 1 night.
Day6: taka chiho, bus to kumamoto
Day7-10: kumamoto to fukuoka. Stay 4N. Day trips to nagasaki; dazaifu/yanagawa; shimonoseki.
    Day11: tsuwano
Day12-13: tsuwano – matsue w a stop in izumo taisha.
Day14: 1/2 day trip to sakaiminato by 鬼太郎train. Return to matsue then head to takamatsu. Or should I do this trip on day 13 and go takamatsu from matsue on Day14?
I will be travelling w the 14d pass.
If you don’t mind I will show you the shikoku ones next time.
Thanks again Takeshi-San. we are from new Zealand, far away from Japan and always try to plan a month long and take as much as we can to be worth it, so your help is really appreciated.

    • Hi Joe san,

On day 4, if you take Umisachi Yamasachi to get Obi, Udo Jingu is very close. I think you know that since we have discussed this many times. You can keep this itinerary but you will waste the time if you don’t visit Udo Jingu on day 4.

Remember that I did Takachiho-Nobeoka-Udo jingu-Aburatsu-Miyazaki in one day. If you stay in Miyazaki for one night, you can visit Aoshima only on day 4. And you can do other things on day 5. It can be made.

Regarding day 13 and 14, you can go to Sakaiminato on either day 13 or 14. What is your priority, staying in Matsue or early arrival in Takamatsu? If you want to stay longer in Matsue, day 14, If you want to get Takamatsu earlier, day 13. It’s up to you.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • Joe Pan says:

        Thanks Takeshi-San.
My first though was doing anything covered by the jr pass on Day4, on day 5 taking the advantage of ¥1800 to cover udo-jingu and bus between nobeoka and taka chiho, but as you suggested it’s wasting time on either day.
I may prefer stay longer in matsue as I will have a few days in takamatsu, so I guess I will go there late.
        Thanks for your advice Takeshi-San.

      • Joe Pan says:

Takeshi-San, from Hakata to yanagawa, can jr pass be used in some part? Is it much slower than taking the nishitetsu train?
        Cheese

      • Joe Pan says:

        Hi Takeshi-San,
Again could you please give me some advice for the shikoku itinerary

Day13-15: takamatsu, one day trip to tokushima.
        Day 16: takamatsu – Shodoshima
Day17: shodoshima -takamatsu -kochi with stop in kotohira for kompirasan.
        Day18: kochi
        Day19: kochi -matsuyama
Day20-21: matsuyama w day trip to ozu and uchiko
        Day22: matsuyama -okayama
Day23: okayama w 1/2 day trip to kintaikyo bridge.
        Day24: okayama -kinosaki via himeji
Day25: kinosaki w day trip to Amanohashidate and ine.
        Day26: kinosaki -shirahama via Kyoto
        Day27: shirahama -Kyoto
Day28-29: Kyoto w day trip to hikone.

l’ll start shikoku 5d pass on Day15 and 2d pass on day 21 and pay supplement for the hoshu area (¥500 on marine line?) Also 5d kaisai wide area pass from day23-27.
I know the vine bridge in oboke and iya valley is difficult to access by public transport, but if I want to squeeze in (even just the vine bridge ), how can I do it? sacrifice kompirasan?
What’s the fastest route to get matsuyama from kochi? If I want to make a stop and stroll around in uwajima by the jr yodo line, will that be too tigh and not worth it?
Is a long trip on day26/27 between Kyoto and shirahama, is there a smarter arrangement?
From Kyoto we’ll travel to matsumoto , karuizawa , Niigata and finish off in toKyo w the jr east 5d pass. I think that’s quite straightforward.
I took your advice and rethink about the pass, it works out that this one is cheaper than using 21d plus 14d, so thanks for that.
Sorry Takeshi-San, another long post. thanks for your time.
Have a good day /night. Cheese.

        • Hi Joe san,

I have a few things to mention.

          1. Kansai Wide Area Pass
You cannot use this to get Kintaikyo. It’s outside coverage area. You should use Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass.
          https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/kansai-hiroshima-area-pass-perfect-deal-for-the-traveller-who-wants-travel-both-kansai-and-hiroshima.html
Price is higher but no choice as long as you have a trip to Kintaikyo.

          2. JR East Pass
It’s okay to travel among Matsumoto, Niigata, Karuizawa. But how do you get Matsumoto from Kyoto? If you want to take train, you need to add single fare to Matsumoto from Kyoto. It costs around 10,000 yen. This amount + JR East Pass is still cheaper than JR Pass 7 days. But the difference is quite small. This single ticket amount + JR East Pass Nagano Niigata + Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass is 43000 yen. If you add another 3000 yen, you can use JR Pass 14 days.
I haven’t seen part of your plan after day 30. But I’m not sure JR East pass is the best choice.

If you want to squeeze Iya valley, you need to drop by on the way to Kochi. You can drop by both Konpira and Iya. But it’s depends on how much you want to stay in Konpira and your departure time from Shodoshima. When I visited Oboke, there are some taxis to wait for travelers. I have no idea to get Iya by taxi but you can save your time.

Regarding Kochi to Matsuyama, if you want to drop by Uwajima, you have to take Yodo line. I traveled Oboke, Kochi, Yodo line two years ago. You may find some idea from this trip report.
          https://jprail.com/category/travel-informations/trip-report/2015-spring-shikoku

          Cheers,

          Takeshi / JPRail.com

          • Joe Pan says:

Thank you so much Takeshi-San, kintaikyo is not included in kansai wide pass, I didn’t look at it carefully. However I have another issue, I just find out that karato market, a big draw for me in shimonoseki, is only come lively on weekends to about 3pm, I only arrive to fukuoka on Sunday from kagoshima, so there isn’t much chance to make trip there.
I may change my plan to go direct to kintaikyo from fukuoka(hr and 1/2 plus bus time) , on the way back drop by tokura ‘s tanga market, which is the biggest in northern kyushu anyway.
So do you think I still can use the less expensive kansai wide pass?
I read your post about shirahama, you went there from Shin-osaka. If I coming from kinosaki, is better to go via Kyoto or shin-osaka?
If I change plan to stay 1 night only in kinosaki, the next day visit amanohashidate briefly, then from there to shirahama for 2 nights , where should I stop to make transfer?
It’s a long trip anyway or you have a better suggestion?
Regarding the route from kochi to matsuyama, lf I drop by uwa-cho instead of uwajima , will that be more complicate? Is uwa-cho has more small town and meiji-era feel than uwajima?
Here is the itinerary for the last part of my trip.
Day31: Kyoto -matsumoto (single ticket )
Day32: matsumoto -karuizawa (jr east pass no.1) 1/2 day trip to kusatsu onsen (not cover by the pass, right?)
            Day33: karuizawa
Day34: karuizawa -niigata drop by echiyo-Yu zawa onsen (pass no.2)
Day35: niigata, 1/2day trip to sakata (pass no. 3)
            Day36:niigata -Tokyo (pass no.4)
            Day37: Tokyo
            Day38: Tokyo -Haneda (pass no.5)
I think is about ¥6000 cheaper than 21d plus 14d pass, but the latter can be a bit more flexible and carry less pass, but I still have months to worry about the combination of the pass, the 38 day itinerary is making me headache at the moment, it feels like the more days I’m going the more places I want to squeeze in, so I really appreciate your help Takeshi-San.
            Cheers

            • Hi Joe san,

I think you plan is feasible. You can visit Kintaikyo from Hakata and use Kansai Wide area pass after arriving Okayama. It is cheaper but as you think, you will carry many passes. And also you need to add single fare for Matsumoto to Nagano. Because you cannot purchase JR East pass at Matsumoto. If you can buy it in advance somewhere in JR East area, such as Tokyo, you can start using it at Matsumoto. But if you cannot purchase it in advance, you have to go to Nagano to purchase it.
              http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/eastpass_n/index.html

And also bus to Kusatsu is covered by JR pass, not by JR East Pass.
              https://jprail.com/destinations/kanto-area/how-to-access-to-kusatsu-onsen-japan-rail-pass-covers-all-part-of-trip-to-kusatsu.html

Reserved seat fee is included in JR Pass but Kansai wide area pass does not, JR East pass does. I think you can find a seat in non reserved car but it’s less stress if you secure your seat.

              The choice is yours.

I have no idea about Uwa. I have never been there and cannot say anything.

You can transfer the trains at Shin-Osaka. You can do it at Kyoto. But trip time via Shin-Osaka is shorter than via Kyoto in most of cases.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com

              • Joe Pan says:

                Thanks for your reply, Takeshi-San.
I always buy the pass from my local agents , it’s a bit cheaper and more convenient.

As you know I still have at least 6 months to finalise the combination of the passes, but, there is one thing that makes me a little confusing.

I just found out that the new jr all pass on sell in Japan in march, not only the price has gone up and there is one additional condition I haven’t seen before. It reads like that :

“You can not purchase the pass whose dates of use are the same as those of the one you have already purchased ”

Does that only means one cannot overlapping 2 passes.? I wonder who could use 2 identical pass in the same period.

Regarding to the bus between karuizawa and kusatsu, you said it is included in the jr pass. Does that mean the direct bus by 西武(50mins ¥2200)?
I check that there is other routes involved Naganohara, is that convenient for me when I travel between matsumoto and karuizawa? is it not a bad option if I want to save money by taking it from karuizawa?
                Many thanks again Takeshi-San.

              • Joe Pan says:

SORRY Takeshi-San, I forgot to look at your link for the kusatsu onsen. I’ll check it later on
                Cheers good night

              • Joe Pan says:

                Hi Takeshi-San,
Could you please tell me how jr pass can be used to get to osaki-shimozima? Should I go there via okayama or matsuyama in shikoku?
Is it possible to linked it together with imabari?
                Cheers
It looks like that I can’t receive your reply by email. There use to be a column to click for this purpose.

                • Hi Joe san,

I have never been there before so I’m not familiar with this place.
The only thing I know is access from Hiroshima side. I think you cannot access there from Shikoku side. You need to take a bus from Hiroshima or take a boat from Takeshima port in Hiroshima pref.

But that’s all I know. It’s not accessible from Okayama and Matsuyama. And also you need to have another pass even if you have a trip from Okayama.

                  Cheers,

                  Takeshi / JPRail.com

  6. Joe Pan says:

    Hi Takeshi-San,
If I start from kagoshima and making a day trip to the udo shrine with a ride on the umisachi -yamasachi, I may have two options as the following.

    1: kagoshima 7:37 — miyazaki 10:02
Catch the umisachi -yamaguchi at 10:08 — aburatsu 11:27. Then catch the bus at 11:50 (¥1000 pass) to udo12:12.
Qustion : is the JR arrival and umisachi departure the same place? Is 6 mins too tight to change train

2: arrive miyazaki station at 10:57, take 11:10 bus to udo arrive at 12:37. Depart at 15:22 arrive at obi at 16:04. Catch the umisachi at 16:12 and back to miyazaki
Qustion : again is 8 mins too tight to change at obi? I could finish early at udo and take the 14:04 bus then I could have a hr in obi, but I heard that is takessential a bit of time to go and back between the shrine and the bus stop, so it could perhaps leave me just under 1 hr , is that ok to stroll around ?
Do you think the bus is more economical? Does neither itinerary leaves me a chance to get close to the washing board beach ?
Thanks for your help again Takeshi-San . Have a good day /night.

    • Hi Joe san,

Actually you will have another issue if you want to use Visit Miyazaki Bus Pass. Because you have to purchase it at Miyazaki station.
If you take plan 1, it’s no problem to change trains in 6 minutes. But you don’t have enough time to purchase bus pass.
If you take plan 2, it may be okay to purchase bus pass in 13 minutes transfer time.

But 8 minutes at Obi is too tight. When I took the bus there, the bus was late. Local bus is sometimes late because of traffic. I just got there only one minute before Umisachi Yamasachi departure time.

So the best option if you want to use bus pass is option 2 and need to take earlier bus. Unfortunately no chance to get off at beach.

      Cheers,

    Dear Takeshi,
I want to write a note of appreciation on your brilliant piece of information shared here, it is a very useful guide for my trip to Udo Jingu last January (2015).
However, I wish to highlight that the bus that goes to Udo Jingu now stops right inside the coach carpark, which is this picture in your post:

    It is more convenient now.
    Thank you and sincerely yours,

    Hi Takeshi,

As you know, I am going to the Udo Shrine in early May. I am curious, do you happen to know where the bus stops are in Aoshima relative to Aoshima Station? I did have a look on the Miyazaki Kotsu website, and there were several stops listed in Aoshima, but I couldn’t find where they were relative to the station.

    Best regards,
