How to access to Hakodate and Sapporo in Hokkaido by railway.

Sapporo in winter time is so beautiful.
Sapporo shows very beautiful scenery in winter time.

Hokkaido is very popular destination in these days. Especially Sapporo is very well known because it is the biggest city in Hokkaido and is it the base city of the biggest winter festival in the world. Hakodate is located in southend of Hokkaido. This small city is also very popular among tourist. It is also the gate city of Hokkaido if you take train or ferry.

If you have JR Pass, JR East South Hokkaido Rail Pass, train trip to Hakodate or Hokkaido is fully covered. Actually we can get Sapporo in same day from Tokyo and even Osaka by Shinkansen and Limited express trains. However it is such a long long trip. 1. Hi Takeshi!

If my friend and I have JR Passes and plan to travel from Hakodate to Tokyo, which trains can we use (only day time trains) and do we have to reserve seats?

Neither of us know how to speak Japanese very well, so we were worried about how we can reserve tickets.

    Thank you!

    -Claire

    1. Hi Claire,

You can take the rapid train, Hakodate Liner from Hakodate to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. And take the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Tokyo. These trains are covered by JR pass.

Hakodate liner is a sort of the commute trains. Reservation is not required. Reservation is required to take the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Tokyo.

Don’t worry about the booking. There are more than 20 million foreign tourists visit Japan and most of them do not speak Japanese at all. Most of them could do it by themselves and no problem.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      1. Thank you so much Takeshi!

To follow up my question, how long does it take to book the reservation to take the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Tokyo? Is this accomplished through an electronic vending machine or through a ticket agent?

        Thanks again,
        Claire

        1. Hi Claire,

You can do it online if you want. The reservation is open one month before the travel day. Please see the link below to find the online reservation:

If you want to book a seat at the station, you can do it either at the vending machine or the reservation window. Both can be found at any major JR station. You can do it in advance before you go to Hakodate if you like.

          Cheers,
