Schedule of 2014-15 winter seasonal trains of Japan Railways

Seasonal trains schedule
The first ever Shinkansen cruise train, Toreiyu Tsubsa. (C) James Chuang
Limited Express Asahiyama Zoo

Limited Express Asahiyama Dobutsuen

In Japan, New Year holidays are the busiest period in entire year. Most of Japanese go back to hometown in this season. So the trains depart from major cities, like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya will be very busy. Most of companies will be closed from Dec 30 to Jan 3. In this coming season, I expect Dec 27, 28, 29 and 30 will be busy. And everybody come back on January 3 and 4. So you should avoid to take a train on those days. In some of the trains, the occupancy rate may be more than 200%. As long as trains have non reserved seat, you can get on anyway without any reservation. But you will be forced to stay on the isle or passenger’s deck without seat. There are many passengers without seats in the train during those busiest days.

The movie below shows you the station and train in new year in 2013. You can find how it goes in New Year holidays.

As probably you know, Hokkaido and northern Honshu island (Tohoku region) have very cold and snowy winter. If you travel in these cold weather regions, please expect the delay or suspend due to snow or high wind. If you plan to visit these regions, don’t make a tight schedule.

Anyway JR Group operate lots of seasonal trains during all winter season. But it is too many to introduce all seasonal trains. So I pick up the popular trains and are operated in the popular spot.

  1. James says:

    Hi Takeshi,

Your advice about the busy period for New Year (between 27~30 Dec & 3~4 Jan) is most helpful.

I hope to catch the Tokaido Shinkansen from Odawara to Shin-Osaka on the morning of 31 Dec. Based on your experience, do you think that there will be available seats seeing that it’s already New Year Eve?

I will only arrive at Tokyo on the morning of 26 Dec, is it too late to reserve seats for that journey by then?

    Thanks.

    • Hi James.

I’m very optimistic. Because most of travellers do not want to go back to hometown in last minutes. Actually Dec 31 is much slower than other dates. I think you will be able to make it.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail

  2. sim says:

Hi Takeshi, here is my travel plan taking into consideration your suggestions.
13th Dec arrival in Kansai, head for Kyoto straight away using ICOCA haruka pass. I’ve got two kids so maybe 9 n 5. Maybe I need to rethink about that. Any comments?

14th Dec Kyoto – arashimaya. Sagano scenic rail. Advance reservation? Maybe Kobe

15th Dec Kyoto to Kanazawa. Sights in Kanazawa

16th Dec Kanazawa-Shirawago- takayama. Nohi bus. Night in takayama.

    17th takayama to Matsumoto bus
    Matsumoto castle. Head for Yudanaka
    Night at Yudanaka

18th Yudanaka snow monkey, afternoon leave for Akita via uetsu or shinkansen

19th resort shirakami to Aomori, then transfer for Hakodate. Night at Hakodate

20th Hakodate market, head for Christmas train/ noboribetsu/ maybe option 1)northward to Sapporo to have dinner. Evening train from Sapporo to Ueno
Or option 2) back to Hakodate for night n leave on morning train to Ueno

    21-24th Tokyo, Disney etc.

Would appreciate your comments on itinery n trains n my options.

Also, I’m wondering if hororiku pass is relevant to me since it covers bus n also airport transfer from Kansai to Kyoto.

    Thanks Takeshi

    • Hi Sim,

I have 5 years daughter. She doesn’t like to stay in the train more than 2 hours. 🙂

If your kids like train trip, it will be okay.
But I think Dec 18 is too much. Are your kids okay with 5 hours trip? And I don’t think it’s a good idea to visit Sapporo to have dinner. It takes 3.5 hours one way. It doesn’t make sense to spend 7 hour just to have dinner. If you will not make a booking overnight train, I recommend you to stay in Hakodate. Kids will be happy.

I don’t know about your kids. If they love trains, it’s fine. But if I take my daughter, I will give up Kanazawa, Takayama, Shirakawago. Kids, especially 5 years old cannot understand this kind of destination. And I also give up Resort Shirakami and Uetsu line. It’s too long.

Takayama-Hokuriku pass does not include KIX-Osaka. You can start to use this pass at Osaka. But you can use ICOCA and Haruka on arrival day. And you can start to use JR pass 7 days for Dec 15 to 21. It will give you a huge savings if you do this trip.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail

  3. sim says:

Hi Takeshi, yes I think I figured the nohi bus bit already. Thanks. In your view is it possible to do leave Kanazawa, head for Shirawago, then to Takayama, then spend night at Matsumoto? Bus schedule seem tight. Wondering if night at Takayama would be more possible

The yudanaka to akita bit, when I hyperdia the route, it always seem to direct me to omiya route, rather than uetsu coastline route. Is it because there are less runs, where can I get timetable of Kira Kira uetsu?

For resort shirakami, I also cannot locate the timetable on line.

Hokkaido bit: Thinking of doing the Christmas train, then head for noboribetsu, then maybe Sapporo. I wonder if that would sort out the 3am hamansu train problem?

Lastly, it seems like I’ll be relying on alot of lockers for my travels, any advice to how to utilize the lockers? Eg size

One more thing, am,I right to say that the trains that need to be reserved when I arrive at Kansai, would be resort shirakami, Hakodate train, hamansu. Nohi bus need reservations?

  4. sim says:

Hi Takeshi, thanks for your advice.
Yes, have decided to go in one way direction from Kanazawa to Takayama on Nohi bus. I checked in hyperdia that there r trains running between takayama to yudanaka too. Bus better? But I have Jr pass, so any advantage in taking bus to yudanaka?

Osaka- am only flying into Kansai and immediately to Kyoto. Will do Kyoto downtown and day 2 maybe arashimaya, perhaps Kobe. Would ICOCA or Haruka still work for me? We stay at Karasuma Sanjyo in Kyoto.

Route back from Hakodate to ueno. R my options only day train if I don’t want to pay extra for sleeper? Hamansu? Timetable only up to 30th Nov?

Would love your advice on this three points. Thanks

    • Hi Sim,

When you go to Yudanaka, you have to go to Nagano anyway. Let’s compare trains and bus+trains.

Takayama 10:10 (nohi bus) 12:30 Matsumoto 13:05 (Ltd Exp Shinano) 13:53
Takayama 11:00 (ltd exp Hida) 12:26 Toyama 12:43 (ltd exp hakutakta) 13:52 Naoetsu 13:57 (local train) 15:36 Nagano

Trip time is much shorter if you take bus and train via Matsumoto. But if you don’t want to pay any extra and okay to spend hours, you can take all trains. If you take all trains, trains do not run at the segment between Takayama and Toyama, Naoetsu and Nagano. This is one of the caused to spend more hours.

      Cheers,

    Hi Takeshi,

Thanks for your advice. We r actually just flying into Osaka n immediately head for Kyoto. In Kyoto, we’ll probably go for the downtown sites. Day 2 maybe go either Arashimaya or Kobe. We stay at Karasuma Sanjyo. Day 3 then we head for Kanazawa

1)would the icoca or haruka cover my routes from Kansa airport to karasuma sanjyo, to Kobe, arashimaya?
    2) on my way back from Hakodate, I realize I only have day train options if I don’t want to get on sleeper? Hokkaido rail Hamansu is a sleeper? Timetable only up to Nov. Is that an option?

And yes, will take bus to takayama instead of back tracking to Kanazawa. Maybe will still take train to yudanaka since have Jr pass.

    Thanks

    • Hi Sim,

      1) ICOCA and Haruka includes the trip from KIX to Kyoto. You have to take subway to get Karasuma from JR Kyoto station but you can use ICOCA that is included in ICOCA and Haruka. It includes only 1500 yen e-money in ICOCA. It’s not enough to cover all part of the trip to Kobe. You may need to add some fare, but not much, like a few hundred yens.

      2) Hamanasu has several kinds of seats that are covered by JR Pass fully.
      https://jprail.com/trains/sort-by-type/overnight-trains/hamanasu.html
However if you take Hamanasu from Hakondate, it departs at 3:27 am. You can’t stay in the station all over the night. But there is no place to stay until 3:27 around Hakodate station. If you go back to Oshamanbe or Date-Monbetsu to catch Hamanasu, it works if you are okay to spend several hours to go back to Oshamanbe or Date-Monbetsu.

Hi, really thanks for the info
I have a plan to use moonlight nagara from ogaki on december 26 night and also from tokyo on january 1. It was said that it needs reservation one month before. I’m kinda confuse of how many days is one month. Is it 30 days? Which means i have to go to madoguchi on november 26 and december 2?
    Thank you in advance

    • Hi Kaleng,

It’s on sale on Nov 26 and Dec 2. It’s same date on one month prior.

      Cheers,

        Thanks for the info

For moonlight nagara, any tips for reservation? The nearest madoguchi from my house opened at 5:20. Is it necessary to go there that early (assuming that midori no madoguchi open hours is different each station, like i saw other station open at 5:45 or 7 am) ?

        Thanks in advance

        • Hi Merry,

Ticket is on sale at 10:00 am on the day of one month prior to departure date.

ex) If you take it on Dec 30, ticket is on sale at 10:00 am on Nov 30.

So you don’t need to go to Midori no madoguchi at the time of open. The best way to book it is booking at exactly 10:00 am. Ask the staff at the window and submit reservation system at 10:00 am sharp. So it depends on how busy the window is. But you should show up the window at least 9:50 am.

          Cheers,

Hi, a follow on question: From Kanazawa-Shirawago-Yudanaka before heading for Akita along the coast can I get some advice on routes. I have looked up on Hyperpedia, seems like I need to do Shirawago as a day trip and then back to Kanazawa?

Going in/out of Yudanaka seems rather complex and most the routes on Hyperpedia seem to recommend inland route instead of coastal route. Could you advice? Thanks

    hi,

i will be travelling into Osaka on Dec 13th, I’ll then head for Kyoto for 2 days. Then going up to Kanazawa, Yudanaka, followed by a trip towards Akita, Aomori, ending at Hakodate, and Tokyo. Whole trip is 12 days.

Am most interested in taking the different types of train and after the scenice views. My route is due to my interest in Resort Shirakami and Hakodate Christmas Train as well as the snow scenery and sea scenery. Any comments or advice on my stop points?

My first few two days in Kyoto, should I be using the Hankyu Pass. Accomodation is at Karisama Sanjo, I am thinking of activating JR pass only when I head for Kanazawa, When I am in Tokyo the pass would have run out, so what pass should I be using for 2-3 days in Tokyo?

    Thanks

Hi,i wanted to ask..we coming to osaka (3rd march) and tokyo (6th march) and nagoya (10th march) so i want to ask if weather in that area are still snowy or already stop?and in march is there any peak hour like busy train schedule also?tq

    • Hi fitri hakim,

The weather is mild in these cities. It’s very rare to be snowy and freezing cold there in even winter season.
March is busier than February. But it’s not super busy, like New Year holidays.
