Odoriko and Super View Odoriko are limited express trains to Izukyu-Shimoda (伊豆急下田) or Shuzenji (修善寺) in Izu peninsula (伊豆半島) from Tokyo. As probably you know, Izu peninsula is one of most famous hot springs resort area in Japan. These express trains take you to many places, such as Atami (熱海), Ito (伊東) and Atagawa (熱川), in Izu hot springs resort from Greater Tokyo area.
Super View Odoriko is serviced by newer cars 251 series. This series has three double-deck cars and even other cars have higher passenger’s deck with the huge panoramic windows. If you pay the single regular fare, the limited express surcharge for Odoriko is cheaper than Super View Odoriko. But it is same for Japan Rail Pass user. Why don’t you take Super View Odoriko?
These trains are operated on both JR line and the private linen, Izu Kyuko Railway and Izu Hakone Railways. So if you take these train by Japan Rail Pass, you may have to pay the extra. So let’s see the detail about these trains and the restriction to use Japan Rail pass.

Restriction for Japan Rail Pass users
Odoriko and Super View Odoriko are operated on Non Japan Railway line too. These trains are operated on Izu-Kyuko line from Ito to Izukyu-Shimoda and Izu-Hakone Railways from Mishima to Shuzenji. If you take these express train on Izu-Kyuko line or Izu-Hakone Railways, you need to pay extra fare.
Extra fare table for Izu-Kyuko line
|Basic fare from Ito (伊東)||Limited express surcharge|
|Izu-Kogen (伊豆高原)||640yen||reserved 500yen / non-reserved 400yen|
Extra fare table for Izu-Hakone Railways
|Basic fare from Mishima (三島)||Limited express surcharge|
|Mishima-Tamachi (三島田町)||130yen||No extra surcharge|
And we have one more restriction when you take Green compartment on Super View Odoriko. Even Japan Rail Pass for Green class user cannot take Green compartment without the surcharge. The surcharge is 6,000yen per a compartment. Green compartment can accommodate up to 4 passengers.
Odoriko is operated by 185 series and Super View Odoriko is operated by 251 series. 185 series was designed for all types of trains. That means this series is sometimes used for a local train. So the accommodation is a bit less than the standard of limited train.
251 series is the double decker and high decker train. It has the panoramic huge glass windows, 2+1 seat configuration on Green class, a salon space (for Green class passengers), green compartment, and even kids play space! If you can get the seat at the front row on Car#1 (Green) or Car #10 (Ordinary), you will be able to enjoy the scenery just behind the cockpit. Green seat includes complimentary soft drink and steamed hot towel. JR East gives this service only for this train except Shinkansen. If you have Green pass, I strongly recommend to take this seat!
