This website shows you a lot of the train passes. But some of you plan to buy a regular ticket. Even if you will use the rail pass, you may have to compare the price of the pass and the regular fare to make sure that you can get the worth of it or not.

In this post, I would like to share the information about the fare calculation with you.

This is the easiest way to get the fare and the timetable of most trains in Japan. Please refer the link below to learn more:

Google map can show you the train and the public bus routes. It also shows you the fare.

JR’s rule on passenger’s ticket

JR companies have the biggest train network in Japan. If you travel between major cities, you will take JR train in most cases.

The fare rule is so difficult to understand for the tourists from overseas. Even some travel agents in Japan do not understand the rule completely.

I wrote about this rule as simple as possible in the post below. You can learn the rule of purchasing and using a regular ticket.

JR company’s official site

Some JR companies have the timetable and fare search engine in their official sites.

JR Hokkaido official website

This website offers you the fare and timetable search of most JR trains.

JR West English website

This website offers you the fare and timetable search of most JR trains.

JR Shikoku English website

This website shows you the fare table of most of JR Shikoku lines.

    Hello,
I am preparing an itinerary for my family trip to Osaka/Kobe/Kyoto and Nagoya. The truth is the train passes offered are very confusing and reading through the website again and again does not much help either.

And I am really impressed the way you explain and help people like me.

So, basically, my itinerary is as follows :

Day 1 arrival at KIX at 10.30 pm. I will book an apartment at Tenjinbashi, Kita Ward, Osaka.
Day 2 Sightseeing Osaka : Osaka Castle, Minami area, Dotonburi, Umeda
    Day 3 USJ , Shinsaibashi
Day 4 Early Checkout, transfer to Kobe for day trip (is it possible to leave our luggage at Kobe station?)
    Sightseeing Kobe
Transfer and overnight at Kyoto , tentatively at Nanjo Mozumecho Muko,Kyoto
    Day 5 Arashiyama
    Day 6 Higashiyama
day 7 Transfer to Nagoya , sight seeing Nagoya
Day 8 1725 Departure from Nagoya Airport.

I really appreciate if you could advise me the best options and economical mode of transport for my family consists of 9 adults and 3 children (aged 8-12).

    Thanking you in advance

Hi, can you pls advice which pass is the most suitable for us as per our daily itinerary.

    Day 1:
Tsukiji Fish Market, Ginza, Hamarikyu Garden, Tokyo Tower, Shinjuku Gyoen, Meiji Jingu Shrine, Shibuya & Marunouchi.
    Day 2:
Kamakara, Sensoji Temple, Asakusa Shrine, Tokyo Disney Sea, Tokyo National Museum, Museum of Nature, National Museum of Western Art, Ueno Park & Akihabara
    Day 3:
Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Solamachi, Edo Tokyo Museum, Bridgestone Museum of Art, The Imperial Palalce, Imperial Palace East Garden, Yasukuri Shrine, Rainbow Bridge & Oedo onsen Monogatari
    Day 4 :
Tokyo Dome City, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Tokyo Government, Harajuku, Yoyogi Park & Ota Memorial Museum, Nikko World Heritage

    • Hi elaine,

      You can use subway pass.
      http://www.tokyometro.jp/en/ticket/value/1day/index.html
Tokyo Metro one day open ticket is okay.

However, Tokyo Disney Sea, Kamakura, Nikko and Odaiba are out of the coverage area. You have to add single fare on top of the pass.
On day 2, it is too much. Kamakura is 45 minutes away from Tokyo station. Most of tourist stay Tokyo Disney Sea at least half day. I don’t think you can complete all spots in one day. Asakusa and Tokyo Skytree are very close. These two spots must be combined in same day.

On day 4, it is too much as well. Nikko is very far from Tokyo. It takes 2 hours to get there. You have to spend at least one day. If you go to Nikko, you can use the pass at the following link:
      http://www.tobu.co.jp/foreign/pass/

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JP Rail
