This pass covers Narita airport, Greater Tokyo, Gala Yuzawa, Nikko, whole part of Tohoku region, Hakodate, Otaru, Noboribetsu, Lake Toya and Sapporo. You also may use this pass to get Lake Kawaguchi and Hakone even though this pass covers these trips partially. You cannot use this pass to get central, northern and eastern Hokkaido, such as Furano, Asahikawa, Shiretoko, Kushiro. JR Pass is better choice if you intend to visit these places.

In this post, I would like to share the information of this pass with you. And I will show you some sample rate and compare the pass value and single fares. You may find that JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass suits your plan or not.

JR Pass official site

This pass is valid for a consecutive 6-days only. There is no Green pass choice.

One day means midnight to midnight, technically 0:00 to 23:59. Even if you start using the pass at 23:00. you spend one full day for just one hour. So try to start in the morning. It does not make any senses to start to use in the evening.

Coverage area

This pass covers eastern part of mainland of Japan, such as Tokyo, Kanto region, Tohoku region, and southern part of Hokkaido. Please see the coverage map in the link below:

Official site of JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass

This pass covers the following major spots in the area.

  • Tokyo
  • Yokohama
  • Nikko
  • Kamakura
  • Gala Yuzawa
  • Otsuki (gateway to Lake Kawaguchi)
  • Odawara (gateway to Hakone)
  • Izu peninsula (Atami, Ito, Shimoda)
  • Kusatsu
  • Karuizawa
  • Sendai, Matsushima
  • Akita, Kakunodate
  • Aomori, Hirosaki
  • Gono line (the route of Resort Shirakami)
  • Hakodate
  • Toya, Date-Monbetsu (gateway to Lake Toya)
  • Noboribetsu
  • Otaru
  • Sapporo

The following places are not located in the coverage area. You CANNOT use this pass to access these following places.

Of course western part of mainland, like Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Shikoku and Kyushu are not covered either.

Valid trains and lines

H5 series will run on Hokkaido Shinkansen as Hayabusa and Hayate. This fleet is same series as Tohoku Shinkansen E5 series. (C) By Sukhoi37 (Own work), JR Hokkaido H5 series shinkansen set H1 approaching Sendai Station on a test run,CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons
Hokkaido Shinkansen is covered by this pass. (C) By Sukhoi37 (Own work), JR Hokkaido H5 series shinkansen set H1 approaching Sendai Station on a test run,CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

All JR trains that run in the coverage area are covered by this pass except Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Atami. But I would like to show you major trains.

I have checked the press release several times. I could not find any other express trains in coverage trains list. But in my understanding, the following express and rapid trains are covered.

JR deals covers basically JR trains only. But Tokyo-Osaka Hokuriku ArchPass covers some “NON JR” railway trains. The following railways are NON JR companies but those are covered by Tokyo Wide Pass.

  • Tokyo Monorail (Haneda-Airport – Hamamatsucho)
  • Izu Kyuko Railway (Ito – Izukyu-Shimoda)
  • Limited Express Nikko and Kinugawa between Shinjuku and Tobu-Nikko, Kinugawa-Onsen
*The trains from Asakusa station are not covered at all.
  • Aoimoi Railway
  • IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway
  • Sendai Airport Trains

If you arrive in or depart from Haneda airport, trip by Monorail is fully covered by this pass. You can exchange your pass at JR East Travel Service Center Haneda.

You may not be able to exchange or purchase your pass at Haneda from early arrival and late departure. As of February 2016, the window at Haneda is open between 7:45 and 18:30 only.

In Tokyo, subway is not covered by this pass. You have to add single fare or city deal. Please see the coverage in Tokyo at the link below:

Compare single fare and JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass

When you think about purchasing this deal, you must know that you can get the worth or not. I show you some sample rates.
*All rates are approximate and it is based on the base fare and the reserved seat limited express supplement in regular season. The fare may be varied by the season.

Trip from Tokyo to Sendai

Total fare is 11,500 yen for one way. You need to have some more trips if you want to use this pass.

Trip from Tokyo to Sapporo

Total fare is 32,000 yen for one way. One way trip is enough to be paid off.
*Single ticket may be cheaper because JR East and Hokkaido will sell some discount ticekt. But I believe this trip is still enough to use this pass.

Trip from Narita airport to Tokyo

The fare is around 4,000 yen.

Trip between Karuizawa and Tokyo by Shinkansen

Total fare is about 6,000 yen for one way. This is not enough to use this pass by only this trip.

Trip to Nikko or Kinugawa-Onsen from Shinjuku or Ikebukuro by the limited express train, Nikko or Kinugawa

Total fare is 4,500 yen for one way to either Nikko or Kinugawa-Onsen. You have to use the pass more to get the worth of this deal.

Trip to Nikko from Tokyo by the Shinkansen and a local train

If you stay at east side of Tokyo, like Shinagawa, Tokyo, Ueno, this route may be faster than direct express from Shinjuku. Total fare is around 6,000 yen for one way.

Trip to Gala Yuzawa from Tokyo by the Shinkansen

Total fare is about 7,000 yen for one way. You can get the worth of this deal easily by only this trip.

Trip to Odawara, Atami or Izukyu-Shimoda from Tokyo by the limited express train, Odoriko or Super View Odoriko

Total fare is 2,940 yen to Odawara for one way by Odoriko and 3,190 yen for one way by Super View Odoriko.
Total fare is 3,800 yen to Atami for one way by Odoriko and 4,180 yen for one way by Super View Odoriko.
Total fare is 6,260 yen to Izukyu-Shimoda for one way by Odoriko and 6,640 yen for one way by Super View Odoriko.
If you visit Shimoda, this pass is cheaper.
*Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Odawara and Atami. But this Shinkansen line, “Tokaido Shinkanse” is not covered by this pass because Tokaido Shinkansen does not belong to JR East but JR Central that is different company.

Trip between Narita Airport and Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku or Yokohama by Narita Express

Total fares are 3,020 yen for Tokyo, and 3,190 yen for Shinagawa or Shinjuku.

Trip between Haneda Airport and Hamamatsucho by Tokyo Monorail

Single fare is 490 yen for one way.

Fares in downtown Tokyo

You can take any local trains, like Yamanote line, Chuo line by this pass. But the fares in downtown Tokyo is quite reasonable. If you take a local train from Tokyo to Shinjuku, the fare is 200 yen. When you calculate the fares and compare this pass and single fare, you can ignore the fares in downtown Tokyo. It does not help to get worth very much.

Assessment

If you travel from Tokyo to southern Hokkaido, like Hakodate, Otaru and Sapporo by train, this is a good deal. You may add trip to Nikko, Izu, Fuji and Hakone , Gala Yuzawa, any places in Tohoku region. If you use this pass, you must be sure that you do not visit outside coverage area, such as, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Hiroshima, Kyushu, Takayama, Kanazawa and Nagoya. This pass does not cover eastern and northern part of Hokkaido either, such as Furano, Asahikawa, Kushiro, Shiretoko, Abashiri and Wakkanai.

You may be wondering which one is better, this deal or Japan Rail Pass (a.k.a. JR Pass). JR Pass 7 days is sold at 29,100 yen. But you have to use this pass in 7 consecutive days.

On the other hand, JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass Flex 6 days is sold at 26,000 yen. Price is a bit cheaper and you can pick any 6 days in 14 days valid period. But the coverage area is much smaller than JR Pass. JR Pass covers throughout Japan.

If you want to visit Kansai area, such as Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and/or Kobe, this deal does not suit your trip plan. If you visit both Kansai area and Hokkaido from Tokyo, even 14 days JR pass is way cheaper than single fare.

I hope this post will help you to pick up the right deal for your trip!

    Hello Takeshi-san

Thank you for such an excellent site, so much good information.

My question. We land in Tokyo and want to get to Saku first (which i think is the closest you can get to Nagano on this JR East-South Hokkaido pass) then to Gala-Yuzawa, then to Aomori, then under the sea to Hakodate and finally to Sapporo.

Could you please suggest the route we would use with this pass. We would like to do at least one stretch on an overnight train so your suggestion for that would be appreciated as well.

    Thank you

    • Hi Philip san,

First of all, there is no overnight trains available in the coverage area. So you have to take all day time train. You will take mostly Shinkansen, Tokyo to Saku-Daira (may be Nagano), Saku-Daira to Takasaki to Gala Yuzawa, Gala Yuzawa to Omiya to Aomori, and Aomori to Sapporo. All trains route and timetables can be found at the link below:

      http://www2.jrhokkaido.co.jp/global/english/ttable/08.pdf

As I mentioned above comment section, I don’t make itinerary. Otherwise anyone ask me to make it. So that’s all I can tell you.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

        Hello Takeshi-san

Thank you for your response, apologies if any of my queries were unreasonable. I understand you cannot make itineraries.

The information provided and the link is very helpful thank you.

We look forward to our trip.

        • No worries, Philip san.

          Cheers,

            Hello Takeshi-san

We just finished our holiday and want to say thank you for the help in getting us started.

We used the pass to get in to Tokyo, then around on the JR lines. Then off to Gala Yuzawa, followed by Hirosaki and Aomori, then along the sea on the Gino line. Next the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Hakodate, after that on to Sapporo. We also bought a Seishun 18 pass and used it to get to Durango, then back to Sapporo.

The pass is fantastic, as was our visit, a beautiful country. We were sad to leave but will be back.

            Thanks again.

      • Philip says:

        Hello Takeshi-san

One more question about reservations. We travel Dec 1-14. Is that busy season and do we need to make reservations in advance?

Right now we have hotel for our first night and last night only. We like to be able to stay flexible and book trains and accommodation as we go, but wonder if that is possible during the December 1-14 period, or will trains be very full?

        Thank you in advance

        • Hi Philip san,

I think you will be okay. The first part of December is usually slow season.

          Cheers,

          Takeshi / JPRail.com

          • Philip says:

            Hello again Takeshi-san

First I hope everything is OK following the earthquake today, very sad news but trust you will take care.

I am wondering if the rail system covered by JR East South Hokkaido has been affected? Will there be disrupted service? We fly to Tokyo Dec 1 and travel from there up to Hokkaido via Gala Yuzawa til the 15th

            Thank you and take cate

    Hello Takeshi San,
We planning to go by rail from Narita Airport to Hakodate on 13th October, 2016. ETA Narita Airport 8.00am. Will be buying the exchange order for JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass Flex 6 days online or in Singapore.
    Please advice:
    1) name of agent selling the JR East-South exchange order in Singapore.
    2) can we make reservation for 2 seats on Narita Express from Narita to Tokyo and also 2 seats on Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hakodate? If so how to do reservation?
    Thank you.

  6. Apple says:

    Hi Takeshi-san

If going from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Ito, the leg from Tokyo to Atami is not covered by Shinkansen?

I checked Hyperdia, if we depart on the earliest train from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, we will reach Tokyo 1404hrs, and depart to Atami at 1434hrs. Within the 30mins gap, do you think it is possible to put our large luggage at the coin locker and be at the platform to Atami on time? We are not familiar with Tokyo station…

It seems like the whole journey will take 448mins, is there a shorter way to go from Hakodate to Ito, by using this JR South East Hokkaido Pass?

    Thank you very much!

    Regards
    Apple

    • Hi Apple san,

You can do it in 30 minutes. Please see the link below:
      http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/customer_support/service_center_tokyo.html

You can store your baggage there. So try to remember the location of this place.

There is no other faster way available. Your route is the fastest. But the earliest train from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto is 6:35 from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and arrive Tokyo at 11:04.
      http://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/english/wb/common/timetable/e_tohoku_u/04.html

You can get Ito much earlier. And you may take limited express Odoriko 115 at 12:00.
      http://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/english/wb/common/timetable/e_lex_tokaido_d/03.html

You cannot Shinkansen from Tokyo to Ito, but you can take this limited express train by this pass.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

      • Apple says:

        Hi Takeshi san

Thank you very much for your detailed reply!

The customer servcie center which you recommended, it mentioned that baggage cannot be stowed overnight. Is that correct? I will be staying for one night in Ito, is it better if I use the coin locker?

For the train, thank you so much, I didnt realised there is much earlier train! After checking with Hyperdia, I think we can take the 0734hrs train from Shin Hakodate Hokuto and 1300hrs from TYO to ITO but does our pass cover the Ltd Express Super View Odoriko 7 from TYO to ITO?

I am trying out the online reservation system(with a mock Aug date) to reserve te Odoriko ticket, and up to the last page it stated that reservation ticket must be collected one day before travel date. In that case, we will be arriving in TYO same day of travel to ITO, how can we manage this?

        Regards
        Apple

        • Hi Apple san,

So you have to use coin locker. Even though there are huge number of lockers in Tokyo station, it’s sometimes so hard to find it. Especially if you want to use a large size locker, it will be very tough. Now you have 54 minutes. You have lots of time but if you cannot find it, give up and proceed to Ito with your luggage.

Regarding reservation, why don’t you pick up it when you exchange JR East South Hokkaido Rail Pass? You can complete all booking when you exchange the pass.

          Cheers,

          Takeshi / JPRail.com

          • Apple says:

            Hi Takeshi san

I dont know why I never even thought that I can pick up all reservation tickets when exchanging for the pass! Thank you so much!

Yes I guess have to bet on coin locker, will take down the locations on map before going.

Sorry one more question, this pass covers the Ltd Express Super View Odoriko 7? Do you know which seating area will be the best to reserve? I saw that car 1 and 2 is green and also first class seat. Does it cover under this JR East South Hokkaido Pass?

            Regards
            Apple

            • Hi Apple san,

It covers Super view Odoriko but Green seat is not covered. Other end is ordinary reserved car, so if you take this train on the way back to Tokyo too, you may be able to get the first row seat. On the way to Ito, it doesn’t matter where your seat is.

              Cheers,

              Takeshi / JPRail.com

  8. Apple says:

    Hi Takeshi san

Can I check, from Shibuya to Nikko, is it covered under this pass? I found the route :
    Shibuya – Omiya(Nasuno Shinkansen) – Utsunomiya – Nikko

Is the Nasuno Shinkansen part covered in this pass?

    Thank you!

  9. Tates says:

    Dear Takeshi,

I have following question about East-South Hokkaido Pass

    1. Im arriving Saturday afternoon and upon arrival at the airport, I will buy the pass. I will travel from Haneda to Hakodate. Will I be able to reserve seat on Shinkansen 2 hours before train depart!

    2. Can I use pass to go around Sapporo City!

    Thank you,
    Tates

    • Hi Tates,

      1. As long as the seat is available, you can book even 10 minutes before departure time. If you travel in busy period, such as mid August, New Years holidays, it will be very tough. But if you travel regular season, you will be fine.

      2. If you mean to take subway, streetcar or local bus in Sapporo, the answer is no. This pass covers only JR train.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com

  10. Eddy says:

    Hello Takeshi,

I want to make sure again about train lines that are covered by this pass.
Does this pass fully cover all trains riding in:
    – Chuo main line between Otsuki St, Katsunumabudokyo St, and Kofu St?
    – Gotemba line between Kozu St and Gotemba St?
Does this pass cover train lines in Honshu really the same like JR East Pass (Tohoku area)?

    Thanks in advance,
    Eddy

    • Hi Eddy,

      – Chuo main line between Otsuki St, Katsunumabudokyo St, and Kofu St?
      This segment is covered fully.

      – Gotemba line between Kozu St and Gotemba St?
This segment is NOT covered at all because this does not belong JR East. JR East pass does not cover this segment either.

      Cheers,

      Takeshi / JPRail.com
