Bento (弁当) is the classic boxed meal in Japan. Especially Bento that is sold at station is called “Ekiben”. “Eki” (駅) means station and “Ben” (弁) is an abbreviation of the Bento. Major department store hold an exhibition that show many Ekiben from all over Japan very often. Ekiben is one of the food culture in Japan. Nobody knows how many Ekiben we have in Japan now. According to Ekiben archives, it says more than 3000 Ekiben in Japan. Even though I pick up the popular Ekibens, it is too many to share the information with you in one post. First of all, I would like to show you the popular Ekiben in Hokkaido with you.

Sapporo (札幌)

Yamabe Sake Sushi (やまべ鮭ずし)

Yamabe (=Yamame= Freshwater Japanese salmon) and Salmon Sushi are in the box.

Kushiro (釧路)

Oshamanbe (長万部)

Kanimeshi (かにめし)

Kanimeshi (Kani=Crab, meshi=rice) is Crab meat rice. It is usually cooked rice with crab broth and mixed with crab meat. There are many kinds of kanimeshi in Japan. This Kanimeshi at Oshamanbe is most popular one in Japan. Oshamanbe is not popular spot. But you can order this Kanimeshi to the attendant on Limited Express Hokuto/Super Hokuto by one hour prior to Oshamanbe arrival.

Hakodate (函館)

Kita no Ekibenyasan (北の駅弁屋さん)

This is the most popular ekiben at Hakodate. Eight kinds of ekibens that are sold at Hakodate station are in one package. Eight kinds of Ekibens are Uni bento (うに弁当=Sea urchin bento)、Nishin Migaki bento (鰊みがき弁当)、Sake Harasu bento (鮭ハラス弁当=salmon belly bento)、Ikura bento (いくら弁当=Salmon roe bento)、Ikameshi (いか飯=rice stuffed squid)、Kanimeshi (かに飯=Crab meat on rice)、Tsubugai bento (つぶ貝弁当=Whelk bento) and Japanese pickles at the side. Buta Ton Ton (豚とんとん)

Buta means pig or pork meat. “Ton” is other ways of reading “Buta”. This is very simple bento. BBQ SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) pork meat is on rice. (Image)

Nishin Migaki Bento (鰊みがき弁当)

Candied dried herring and herring roe are on rice. This is the Hakodate’s ekiben.
